I have several problems with the way SR wrote this episode.
-Derek was just in an accident where he saved people's lives but he stops his car in the middle of road, in a curve, to dig his cell phone out? -He is sent to an inept hospital with inept (all but 1) doctor's who were also, assholes. If he had to go, I'd have liked to see loving faces around him. Support. People who cared about him. The only emotion was at the end with Meredith and the montage. -Meredith doesn't call anyone. Not one person. No sister, Richard, Owen, Bailey, Alex. No one. -He died because a doctor didn't get a CT and the other doctor took an hour and a half to get there because, hey, he got paged but it must not be important. Rolling my eyes so hard at this. -Derek deserved better. Meredith and Derek deserved better. Those kids deserved better and his friends and family deserved to be there. -Shonda Rhimes is a moody, arrogant writer. I'm glad I don't drink her kool aid like half of Hollywood and walked away from this show years ago.
So i haven't been following any news from the show so this was a total shock. I have no words. I definitely think they should end it next season. IDK I'm just shocked.
I read it hours ago on Twitter and I cried. And then the episode happened and I was a crying mess. Omg, I can't believe she actually killed him off. It feels so surreal. Meredith is my favorite and I just... Couldn't she be happy for God's sake?
I haven't watched the episode but I'm going to agree with you because yeah...definitely. But I've had issues with a lot of her writing/shows since Grey's became overly popular. I don't like sensationalistic writing that never gives follow through, and I don't like it when a show can only do shocking and ratings by killing off characters. If PD wanted to leave I'm pretty sure there was a way to do it without killing off a favorite. I'm glad I stopped watching regularly a long time ago. :(
She's a spite writer. She in no way could possibly think this was a good send off to a beloved character and actor. She knew. No one says f*ck you to a loyal audience quite like Shonda. She does it with a smile on her face and thinks you're supposed to like it because, she is the Queen. I long for the day she is dethroned.
Never thought I'd see the day where I'd agree. Grey's was established on the relationship between meredith and cristina and meredith and derek. Both of those elements are gone now. I'm just in disbelief that they actually killed him. I dont see it going on for too much longer now.
"You run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole; you run into assholes all day, you're the asshole"
If she's having actor problems off and on for 11 years and on set issues off and on for 11 years with this many different actors, maybe it's not them. It's her. The common denominator.
Even her statement to EW wasn't about PD or Derek. It was about Meredith.
I just can't believe it. I lost one of my favorites on Chicago Fire two days ago and now this? Why? I know Patrick Dempsey wanted to leave, but he gave 10 years to this show! Why did they have to kill him off?
Derek and Mer were the heart of the show. I loved their relationship. Why the hell did Shonda fire him??? 'Pursuing other interests' my behind he was fired.
i voted Awful, how can i vote Awesome after watching that... it was an emotional rollacoster... it was awesome, but im not voting awesome cause it was too painful to watch.
I mean this is getting too surreal. I am a diehard fan, I've been watching loyaly since day one and honestly, after they killed off Mark, Lexie and George, I shouldnt really be thay surprise.
How come the leading lady of the show loses her sister, her mother, her father, her husband, her best friend, her dog, drowns and almost dies, survives a plane crash, a shooting, gives birth in a chaotic environment, donates her liver, etc etc etc. Even if you are the most resilient person in the world, you cant just go on after so much crap.
I wont stop watching because I love the show too much and I am loyal to it. But hell, they are making it really hard for me to keep going.
I'm sure many fans feel the same, especially after tonight. TBH, after this, they have to handle this storyline supremely well for me to come back, after all I've stopped watching before, doing it again won't make a diference, I have too many shows to watch anyway.
I thought it was just me who didn't like it since I never cared for Derek or MerDer, I'm surprised to see so much negative reactions given all the hype leading up to it. I did think it was so boring though, kind of felt like they did it all last minute. It felt rushed, disorganised and just out of place. I hope they have lots of Alex comforting Meredith from now on, I love those 2 together :)
Haven't gotten a chance to watch the episode yet (was spoiled on the outcome) so I guess I'll wait to make an opinion but I'm surprised by all the awful. I never understand why people hate on shows when its known that the reason for the death is mainly the actors choice for leaving.. It's not like the writers or Shonda did this on purpose for character development or anything. Sure it will offer a lot of good stuff in the future but thats not why the death was written. So I don't have any hate for the show.. Still its not nearly how it used to be in its early days but I haven't been fond of Derek for a while. Him being 'mcdreamy' was never enough for me. Would love a surprise Cristina next week but I know that's in my dreams!
The only good thing that could possibly come out of this is if Addison Forbes Montgomery Shepherd Reilly or/and Cristina Yang were to return to show to fill Derek's position / help Meredith with her lose.
My heart is just broken! I cried like a baby i was like shes just dreaming hes not really dead then boom the end!!!! First mcsteamy now mcdreamy i am convinced that shonda is trying to kill me slowly! But creatively i have to say this was a beautiful episode but shonda neva fails even when she is being cruel to mankind
I agree. And I generally haven't watched the show for a while but damn that was cold. Were they just to cheap to pay for the other cast of the show for this episode or did Shonda not appreciate that Patrick wanted to leave the show from the sounds of it. It's like here you go Derek you die here in this strange hospital surrounded by terrible doctors after stupidly moving your car into the middle of the road. We don't even get to see your coworkers or family receiving the news beyond Meredith. You get surrounded by no one and nothing that you love! In the words of Willy Wonka "You get nothing! You lose! Good day sir!". I feel like that was Shonda to Patrick and his tv character.
Victoria died on Revenge earlier this week, Cruella died on OUAT and now Derek dies on Greys Anatomy. ABC shows are going deadly right now! Won't be long before Shield, Nashville and Scandal do something.
Forbes was her mother's maiden name, Montgomery her father's last name, Shepherd her ex husband Derek's last name, and Reilly her current husband Jake's last name.
Exactly. If they don't choose to end it next season, I'm sure they'll be headed for cancellation. Now I'm wondering what the season finale will be like if this was just a regular episode. They may just kill them all off and get it over with because apparently everyone on the show is just meant to die anyway
I knew this was coming (thanks a lot to EW for that) but I just couldn't handle it. I have never cried so much over a TV show. The tears started coming the moment the nurse started turning of the machines and didn't stop until the end of the episode. And then the promo for the next episode came and they intensified. Damn it, i need a tissue.
And I want to add that it is really rude of Shonda to let us know that Derek could have lived if he had been given proper medical care. Really, really RUDE!!!
GODDAMNIT!!!! I can't even finish the episode I'm so upset. Like damn why would you bring him back, have them make up (after ALL that unnecessary arguing/bickering the pass season), FINALLY in a happy place and you pull this?? Wow!!! (and this is coming from a person that's not usually a fan of Derek) Shonda sure knows how to out-do herself with tearing "happy sh*t" apart. Sorry *tiny rant over*
The most amusing part of all this is that 99% of the time Grey's fans are on here complaining about how much they hate Meredith and how they want less MerDer so they can have more Calzona and Japril and whatever the hell other couples they're obsessed with. But now everyone is acting devastated and saying they'll never watch the show again. I can understand being emotional and annoyed but lets not act like the only reason anyone watches the show is for Derek - of all people, really?
I think it was horrific...unprepared untrained, hospital neglect killed him....I'm so upset and angry right now! After everything that's happend to them, to just do that Shonda! & Why didn't Meredith have him flown back to his hospital before they pulled the plug..SG hospital should have been his final resting place at least!!!! 😡😡😡😡😭😭😭😭 such an important character to the show should not have been killed so he has the option of coming back on the series finalle whenever that maybe...also I think Christina would definitely come home for the funeral.
I never thought i would say this , but THIS time , i know that the show won't survive this death. Merder is THE couple of the show , without one of them , what is the point ?!!
Why couldn't Derek just go to Washington permanently? So that he could have come back for the series finale (which will hopefully be next year)? I've been watching this show since its beginning, but I never expected Shonda Rhimes to pull something like this. I mean, she just KILLED her leading man! What the hell? He should have just left. As said as it is, but I'm very excited to see what's next for the show. Season 12 is definitely going to come in Fall.
I'm speechless, another one of my favorite characters killed off, thank you Shonda. That's now George, Derek Lexi and Mark. And since Yang is not on the show anymore I'll add her. I found it hard to continue watching without Yang, but without Derek as well, I'm not sure.
The biggest question for me is: Why the F*** would you stop in the middle of the road?
I've been saying that for years now. Shonda loves pulling this shit, she loves the buzz it creates. She is arrogant and spiteful and ABC loves her. Shonda could care less about her audience and she cares even less about our feelings.
I don't think he would have stopped in the middle of the road. I think Shonda did it intenionally, with forethought. Her way of saying FU to him,to Derek and the fans.
I never thought i'd see the day when there would only be 3 original characters left. The show should end,its already a shadow of what it once was and now w/o Derek...
Another thing that is unrealistic, but could be film-wise justified is that there were NO CARS coming when Derek was helping out those people. Zero. None...And then all of a sudden this truck comes out? I know they had bigger things to focus on, but it's just ridiculous and lazy on the writers' and directors' part.
A Scandal death is a given, since Harrison didn't have much of an impact, I guess...nor on the audience nor the characters. They've long moved on after eps 4.03-5.
Ohh, good catch on the George/ginger parallel! Though surprisingly Mer (was it her or Izzie?) seemed to be more pissed then from what I recall. I take this scene as an incredible proof of how much Mer has grown as a surgeon. She's the sun. (Sorry, bad timing. But she is!)
Maybe his death was also trying to teach us a "Lesson" to not use a phone whilst driving.
I agree the show should end now, too many characters have left/died and killing one of the leads off, especially yet another fan favorite is a big "FU" to us from Shonda. By the sounds of Dempsey's interview he was shocked he was being killed off as well.
The storylines are just boring or something we've seen, also there are way too many characters that are beyond dislikable or ones that nobody cares about.
I thought of that too after I wrote this. It was ridiculous and IMO, Shonda didn't care enough. It's like she took pleasure in making this episode as silly and unrealistic as possible. She didn't care to make it worthy of a longtime, beloved character. Not to mention, someone she has worked with for 11 years. It's like she said, "he wants to go? He wants to disagree with me? Well F' him." No, Shonda. You didn't screw him. You screwed the fans who cared.
She doesn't and I agree, I've said it from the beginning but they put a freaking crown on her and called her Queen. Anyone who doesn't bow to her is against her. I don't like her, will never like her and I do not respect anyone who disrespects the very people who allowed that crowning to happen.
Exactly. Also just found this on the GA Facebook page and almost had a hysterical laugh. THAT IS SO ACCURATE. "survived a plane crash and a shooter, and you kill him because of a neurosurgeon is at dinner?"
Patrick was already racing when he started GA.He always made it known that one day he wanted racing was his passion. You made it sound like he hated being on Greys and couldn't wait to get off, which, was not the case.
Thanks but no need to find more about racing or the gossip rags.
I was thinking about the characters i cared about now that he is gone. It comes down to Meredith, Webber, Bailey and Alex. Webber and Bailey haven't had a storyline in years,or at least anything that was good so that leaves Meridith and Alex.
I think Meridith next season will have the biggest storyline. Dealing with her loss, her kids adjusting and finding out she is pregnant and will be having a boy. I have no idea about Alex? But, i do hope he and Jo part ways,i really don't like her at all.
It was a super emotional episode and I loved it. It's a shame Derek had to die but I'm curious to see what direction the show will go towards now. I just hope that Shonda doesn't have Meredith banging another guy by next season because grief doesn't work like that.
Im still trying to watch the complete episode but I just can´t. I play for like 20 seconds and stop, over and over, because I keep crying like a crazy person, overthe death of a TV character. I just cant control it. It´s so unfear, MerDer really needed a happy ending, the fans needed it after all the previous dead people and love stories. I´ll never forget Shonda for this. She just ruined it all.
Awful. Shonda, if you think that ep was like "wow, unexpected, super-duper" I have some bad news to you - it's AWFUL, STUPID and DISRESPECTFUL to your fans and to the actor. ELEVEN years, dammit! ELEVEN YEARS! MerDer - the HEART of this show. HOW DARE YOU??? Can you realoze how much you hurt your fans? People who has watching your shows for years?? Oh yeah, it's drama AND we love it, but you know what?? THERE IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRAMA AND SILLINESS! I have been loving Grey's Anatomy for YEARS. And today... it's ruined. This day is so bad, I feel sick all day long, I cry, I can't even breathe. This is not Grey's Anatomy anymore. And you know what is the worst??? That I TRUSTED YOU. When you said you loved MerDer, the characters, their lines, lovestory... I trusted you. And you screwed everything up. You failed me. You are a liar. All those years now mean nothing. I'm done.
It's ridiculous. Shonda gets rid of the all the characters that everybody loves, sure some of the actors them wanted to leave, but did they have to die? (Lexie) Also, Derek, Mark and George.
She kills all them off, but keeps characters that I'm sure most people hate: Jo, Steph, Owen Hunt, Amelia (maybe it's just me, but I really dislike her).
Also, if Shonda wanted a death why not kill off Steph, Jo or Owen. Hell, even get rid of Amelia.
Why would a creator of a show kill off fan favorite characters, looking at Mark, George, Lexie. Now Derek. Sure it creates a lot of buzz, but it's stupid. I mean, does she even listen to the fans?
I totally agree. For me, I feel like any actor who has had any kind of issue with her or the writing and had the balls to say it out loud, was killed off when they left the show. She didn't have to bring him back for this at all. He wasn't here, he could've stayed gone and his contract voided. Also my opinion, when Meredith told Derek "You go, we'll be fine." That was pure Shonda saying we don't need you, bye.
Either way PD is better off. He gets to race his cars, he got paid and he'll be going on to a new show eventually when Grey's has lost all of its luster. He has options. Grey's wasn't his "one and done"
The big "FU" moment from Shonda was when they showed us that if attended to properly he could have survived.
I would have preferred it as well if he just stayed in DC, and then maybe came back for the series finale. Shonda claims that his death opens up tons of possibilities, but it really doesn't.
With the exception of next week (Maybe) I reckon the ratings will fall, and I hope they do to show Shonda that the show isn't just about Meredith and that other characters matter too.
I really can't stand creators who care not for the fans, and if so many actors have fallen out with her, then it's obvious she's the problem, not them. I wonder who she'll kill next, Alex, maybe?
It needs to go this season. The writing has become worse and worse for the last two-three years. SR is clearly just milking it now. I hope ratings fall so much they won't get picked up for another season, no matter what contracts they have in place.
Well, this was unexpected, unecessary and just cruel, to Meredith's character, to the fans and the all Grey's stories. I don't know after Lexie and Derek, I think I will maybe not watch next season.
Heartbreaking. I don't even know what to say. I've watched since the first episode and can't believe they would do this to the character. I wonder whose decision it was (creators or actor).
If they don't bring Christina (Sandra Oh) for this week's episode then I might just give up after this season.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Omg I cant 😭
ReplyDeleteEven knowing what was going to happen i still got so upset..... :(
ReplyDeleteFuck, that hurt. I didn't read the EW article so I had no clue how it was going to go down but nothing prepared me for that pain.
ReplyDeleteI was convinced Derek had died in the initial accident and was just hallucinating saving those people and THEN HE GOT HIT AND OH GOD.
Why wasn't Amelia called, though? That bothered me. AND THEN THEY PLAYED THE SONG AND IT HURT MORE AND THE FLASHBACKS MADE ME START CRYING.
I hope Meredith sues their ass for malpractice. No wonder everyone goes to Seattle Grace Mercy Death.
Amazing episode !!!
ReplyDeleteMe too. :(
ReplyDeleteHoly F! I decided to tune in after TBBT. Haven't watched in years, but just wow.
ReplyDeleteOMG! I'm loss for words the song at the end with Meridith and the flashbacks she better sue that hospital for everything it's worth
ReplyDeletehttp://gif.co/o7TG.gif
ReplyDeleteIt was so sad . i won't watch the show anymore . I taught Mer/Der was endgame and now ...
ReplyDeleteTalk about malpractice.
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch but reading the comments makes me sad....
ReplyDeleteI just....I just can't. Shonda.....
ReplyDeleteI have several problems with the way SR wrote this episode.

It was hard. We already knew but it was still hard.
That talked she had with the woman reminded me so much when they talked with the girl when George died.
It was freaking frustrating hearing hsi thought on what could've been done. Shonda really wanted us to suffer.
ReplyDeletefuck you shonda
ReplyDeleteGODDAMNIT!!!! I can't even finish the episode I'm so upset. I've been saying that for years now. Shonda loves pulling this shit, she loves the buzz it creates. She is arrogant and spiteful and ABC loves her. Shonda could care less about her audience and she cares even less about our feelings.
ReplyDeleteIf he wanted off the show for years he wouldn't have signed the contracts for all these years...
ReplyDeleteYep,me too! I didn't cry this much when Lexis or Mark died. I couldn't stop the water works...
ReplyDeleteMan, when Meredith started calling out his name, like she was hoping he'd hear her voice and wake up...man tears everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he would have stopped in the middle of the road. I think Shonda did it intenionally, with forethought. Her way of saying FU to him,to Derek and the fans.
ReplyDeleteI never thought i'd see the day when there would only be 3 original characters left. The show should end,its already a shadow of what it once was and now w/o Derek...
Btw where were they? Was it near Washington?! And they have such idiotic doctors there?
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that is unrealistic, but could be film-wise justified is that there were NO CARS coming when Derek was helping out those people. Zero. None...And then all of a sudden this truck comes out? I know they had bigger things to focus on, but it's just ridiculous and lazy on the writers' and directors' part.
ReplyDeleteI don't even watch this show anymore and I'm pissed
ReplyDeleteA Scandal death is a given, since Harrison didn't have much of an impact, I guess...nor on the audience nor the characters. They've long moved on after eps 4.03-5.
ReplyDeleteOhh, good catch on the George/ginger parallel! Though surprisingly Mer (was it her or Izzie?) seemed to be more pissed then from what I recall. I take this scene as an incredible proof of how much Mer has grown as a surgeon. She's the sun. (Sorry, bad timing. But she is!)
ReplyDeleteThis.
ReplyDeleteThree?
ReplyDeleteMaybe his death was also trying to teach us a "Lesson" to not use a phone whilst driving.
ReplyDeleteI agree the show should end now, too many characters have left/died and killing one of the leads off, especially yet another fan favorite is a big "FU" to us from Shonda. By the sounds of Dempsey's interview he was shocked he was being killed off as well.
The storylines are just boring or something we've seen, also there are way too many characters that are beyond dislikable or ones that nobody cares about.
Merdith, Webber and Bailey. Did i forget someone?
ReplyDeleteI thought of that too after I wrote this. Well F' him."
ReplyDeleteNo, Shonda. You didn't screw him. You screwed the fans who cared.

ReplyDeleteThat's just the most recent example, from last November. But I can Google a few more for you if you want.
She doesn't and I agree, I've said it from the beginning but they put a freaking crown on her and called her Queen. Anyone who doesn't bow to her is against her. I don't like her, will never like her and I do not respect anyone who disrespects the very people who allowed that crowning to happen.
ReplyDeleteYep. Actually you did, Laura. You forgot about Alex.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Also just found this on the GA Facebook page and almost had a hysterical laugh. THAT IS SO ACCURATE. "survived a plane crash and a shooter, and you kill him because of a neurosurgeon is at dinner?"
ReplyDeletePatrick was already racing when he started GA.He always made it known that one day he wanted racing was his passion. You made it sound like he hated being on Greys and couldn't wait to get off, which, was not the case.
ReplyDeleteThanks but no need to find more about racing or the gossip rags.
LOL! Poor Alex! How could i have forgotten about him?Shame on me,lol!! ;)
ReplyDeletedone with grey's. Absolutely done! Grey's Anatomy was not just about Meredith, something shonda doesn't realise.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about the characters i cared about now that he is gone. It comes down to Meredith, Webber, Bailey and Alex. Webber and Bailey haven't had a storyline in years,or at least anything that was good so that leaves Meridith and Alex.
ReplyDeleteI think Meridith next season will have the biggest storyline. Dealing with her loss, her kids adjusting and finding out she is pregnant and will be having a boy. I have no idea about Alex? But, i do hope he and Jo part ways,i really don't like her at all.
That's exactly how i feel, and its only gotten worse with HTGAWM.
ReplyDeleteIt was a super emotional episode and I loved it. It's a shame Derek had to die but I'm curious to see what direction the show will go towards now. I just hope that Shonda doesn't have Meredith banging another guy by next season because grief doesn't work like that.
ReplyDeleteIm still trying to watch the complete episode but I just can´t. I play for like 20 seconds and stop, over and over, because I keep crying like a crazy person, overthe death of a TV character. I just cant control it.
ReplyDeleteIt´s so unfear, MerDer really needed a happy ending, the fans needed it after all the previous dead people and love stories.
I'm done.
ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous. Shonda gets rid of the all the characters that everybody loves, sure some of the actors them wanted to leave, but did they have to die? (Lexie) Also, Derek, Mark and George.
ReplyDeleteShe kills all them off, but keeps characters that I'm sure most people hate: Jo, Steph, Owen Hunt, Amelia (maybe it's just me, but I really dislike her).
Also, if Shonda wanted a death why not kill off Steph, Jo or Owen. Hell, even get rid of Amelia.
ReplyDeleteWhy would a creator of a show kill off fan favorite characters, looking at Mark, George, Lexie. Now Derek. Sure it creates a lot of buzz, but it's stupid. I mean, does she even listen to the fans?
I totally agree. For me, I feel like any actor who has had any kind of issue with her or the writing and had the balls to say it out loud, was killed off when they left the show.
ReplyDeleteShe didn't have to bring him back for this at all.
ReplyDeleteI would have preferred it as well if he just stayed in DC, and then maybe came back for the series finale.
ReplyDeletei´ done with the show, i been a fan since episode 1 i can´t belive they kill Derek
ReplyDeleteHa, lol. A lot of people have been saying Richard (forget the actors name) is departing next season, though I've seen no articles about it.
ReplyDeleteWell, this was unexpected, unecessary and just cruel, to Meredith's character, to the fans and the all Grey's stories. I don't know after Lexie and Derek, I think I will maybe not watch next season.
ReplyDeleteYeah was not a fan of Amelia either.
ReplyDeleteHow to save a life: don't make it be written by Shonda Rhimes.
ReplyDeleteHeartbreaking. I don't even know what to say. I've watched since the first episode and can't believe they would do this to the character. I wonder whose decision it was (creators or actor).
ReplyDeleteIf they don't bring Christina (Sandra Oh) for this week's episode then I might just give up after this season.
