If you have already seen the Press Release and Promo for this episode then you are possibly thinking that the show takes a bit of a darker turn this week. To be fair, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark with that assumption, this is undoubtedly the grittiest one yet. Our character’s relationships are tested to their limits as they face a series of seemingly insurmountable obstacles that fate sees fit to throw their way. A few will be overcome by sheer force of will, personal strength and the community pulling closer together. Regrettably, of course, not all plans will succeed and some schemes that do work out may not be for the benefit of all concerned.
It’s been two years since young Jim was sent to Bodmin Jail by Reverend Halse (Robin Ellis) for poaching, and time has not been kind to the poor lad. He is barely recognisable as the same youth who stood shivering in the dock as Ross pleaded for mercy to be shown in his case. Yet his outlook for the last weeks of his sentence has become even bleaker as a highly contagious fever sweeps through the gaol.
Instructing Zacky to keep Jinny in the dark so she doesn’t worry about her husband’s health, Ross sets out with Dwight across the moors to see exactly what the situation is. After bluffing their way inside they are shocked at the condition the prisoners are kept in, and quickly devise a way of breaking Jim out of the disease ridden building in a desperate bid to save him.
It is these actions that will have a knock-on effect for much of the episode. The ripples of the crime the two men commit will impact their friends, family, enemies, and even themselves, in unexpected ways.
On a brighter note, the Carnmore smelting company is a massive success. With Zacky as its nominal agent at the auction, it manages to outbid its rivals and buy the copper from all the local mines, which will bring stability to the area. As you can imagine, this does create problems too however, George is seething over the loss of profit due to auction and the fact that Ross has managed to out manoeuvre him. There will be repercussions for this preserved indignity, both in the immediate future and for the long term. The smooth-talking rascal knows exactly what Ross’ Achilles’ heel is and steps up his agenda, determined to bring down his rival once and for all.
As I’m sure my regular readers are aware, Verity is one of my favourite characters, so I am glad that she was finally reunited with her Captain last week. Unfortunately, there are those in Truro who have also heard the news too, including one particular gossip who we know likes to get her malicious digs in whenever she can if the Poldark’s are concerned. If the news gets back to Francis before Verity gets a chance to tell him herself then I fear that the fledgling relationship could be doomed yet again.
As you can see in this week’s sneak peek, she does attempt to find time to discuss the matter with her brother, but his indignation and bitterness since the mine closure has made him volatile. His downfall is entirely of his own making, but there a small part of me that wonders if Elizabeth is partly the source of his state of mind now. I felt that when Francis was telling her that she need not come to the mine last week, what he was really meaning was that he couldn’t bear the thought of her disappointment and disapproval by his side. Is there an element of her projecting her disdain on to him that has been driving his feeling of hopelessness and self-loathing in some way?
Everything comes to ahead at George’s party; a rather less seedy affair than last week’s soiree, although Margaret is still openly escorting and the card tables are doing brisk business. Demelza has been practicing her dancing and etiquette, becoming the Cinderella of the ball - albeit one whose Prince Charming has gone off script by being rip roaring drunk and getting snarky with anyone who gets in his way. For someone who’s meant to be convincing his peers that he isn’t responsible for the recent jailbreak, Ross is drawing a lot of unwanted attention and seems to be making some terrible decisions. It’s only a matter of time before Sanson (Jason Thorpe) clears up another tidy profit from the Poldark coffers...
Episode 6 airs on Sunday 12th April on BBC One and BBC One HD, below are a few dialogue teasers to see you through until then. “You’ve been using her to carry letters between Verity and that skunk!” Francis to Ross
“I suppose you, married the girl he loved” ? to Francis
Another great episode this week, really delves into the characters. I like how William McGregor has filmed the ball, it gives a dreamlike quality at times.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to cringe watching Ross screw things up in this episode.
ReplyDeleteAlso, George Warleggan is such a pathetic character. I don't mean that he's poorly written. Just the opposite in fact. He's a true villain. You write that George is 'determined to bring down his rival' and where the pathetic part comes in is that almost all of that is exclusively in his own mind. His own rampant insecurities along with the horrible influence of Cary Warleggan have completely manufactured the idea of Ross as an enemy. He's very much like Francis with less heart and more money.
Totally agree about George, it's all to do with being jealous again. Instead of being content with making a name for himself after his humble beginnings, he wants the prestige that he attaches to the Poldark name for himself.
ReplyDeleteI think that a lot of it is also the fact that people genuinely like Ross. George tries in vain with all his money, lavish parties, and favors to get the fondness, admiration, and respect that people have for Ross. He doesn't get that they're not things you can buy.
ReplyDeleteIt also doesn't help that he's putting so many business owners out of pocket too, in order to grab that extra pound for himself when he clearly doesn't need it. It's a wonder that Ross is the only one who public challenges him for the damage he is causing in the area. In effect, he was partly responsible for the riot last week due to all the participants being out of work because of all the mines he has shut down recently.
ReplyDeleteLike you say, he is a well crafted villain, he has grown stronger through the series nicely. I'm enjoying the sparring between him and his opponents, but I do wonder how far it is going to go.
Agreed. On the flip side of well-crafted villains is Ruth. She's your basic catty mean girl with no added depth and I sincerely hope that Demelza can eventually get her in a room alone then knock her teeth out. That's just wishful thinking though.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yes I'm with you there on Ruth and Demelza! Again I like the characterisation a lot, but boy is she one hell of a b!tch. Ross had a lucky escape there, lol
ReplyDeleteFrancis is still alive for this ep ... ugh.
ReplyDeleteRoss is going to be a dick ... ugh.
Demelza ... le sigh.
Can't wait :)
Hmm, Ross (and some of the other characters to a certain extent) is desperately trying to do the right thing in this episode, it's just very unfortunate that circumstances overwhelm him for a part of it. I would say that there are other roles that act far more selfishly this week, and they have no redeeming qualities to them. Keren, for example, shows us her true colours, and I find her behaviour far less forgiveable than Ross' by the end of the episode.
ReplyDeleteI will still love Ross even if he is a dick ... like they say, you can't be old and wise unless you are first young and stupid. He wouldn't grow as a character if he didn't make mistakes so I will appreciate his redemption all the more for it.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing it - thanks for the review :)
Oooh this looks to be an interesting one!! I love it when a show gets slightly darker.
ReplyDelete"tis no secret you could have done better for yourself. Only glad you did pick me, not some highfalutin scholarly chap." Mark to keren (complete stab in the dark here)
"Look at them all. Over painted, over dressed, over stuffed. If these are my people I'm ashamed to belong to them." Ross to ?demelza maybe
"Your sister deserves better. I beg you; let us resolve this peacfu..." Blamey to Francis
"No doubt the common people you mix with have blunted your faculties as to what may, or may not, be said in polite society." Ruth to Ross
"I suppose you, married the girl he loved." ? To Francis
"You've been using her to carry letters between Verity and that skunk!" Francis to ross
You're welcome! Yes, I guess that's a very true adage :0
ReplyDeleteI hope others enjoy it as much as I did, the darker feel is something I think may be with us to the end of the series in places due to some of the characters interference unfortunately. But it works well, Anne Dudley's music really stands out this week, I've enjoyed her score throughout but she's pulled out the stops for this one.
ReplyDeleteYou have them all correct apart from it's not Ruth who says that line to Ross. She does have one of the other quotes, trying to cause trouble, but this one is said by someone Ross feels is the catalyst of the initial problem and he can't hold his tongue when he is around them due to that.
oh the music is just fabulous, I hope they release it soon! Hmm ross has alot of people he doesnt like so im weighing between the judge robin ellis played (I've forgotten his name!) And george. I'll guess either those two. As for ruth's line its either "heres to the first chink in the poldarks armour" or "I see no scullery maid mama." I fail to see how the second is an insult in the context I imagine it but knowing ruth it's not unlikely.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's the judge - Reverend Halse - who says it instead. Ruth's isn't either of those two though, her's is more of a gossip spreading line ;)
ReplyDelete“You cannot fight all the world. You can only make your own small corner a fairer place” Demelza to Ross
ReplyDeleteHey there Trena :) Yep that one is Demelza to Ross.
ReplyDeleteHey Sandi, YEAH I got one right.
ReplyDeleteNot sure i'm going to like this episode but it will be nice to see Francis working instead of his other "entertainments". Hope it all goes well and Ross doesn't mess it up to much.
ReplyDeleteHere is my stab in the dark for the others quotes:
I’ve known him since he were a boy, but were my worst enemy I would not wish jail pestilence on him” - Ross to Zacky
“You will tell Francis, before the ball?” - Elizabeth to Verity
“Here’s to the first chink in the Poldark armour” - George to his buddy, can't remember name
“I see no scullery maid mama” - Mrs Zacky to Demelza
Aww, I hope that you do like this one, I think it may be better second time round perhaps if you are very invested in some of the characters. I kind of like the darker touch that is coming in this second half of the season, there's some real challenges ahead for our characters and I find it interesting how they cope with them.
ReplyDeleteHere's how you did on the quotes:
I’ve known him since he were a boy, but were my worst enemy I would not wish jail pestilence on him” - Ross to ?
“You will tell Francis, before the ball?” - ? to Verity
“Here’s to the first chink in the Poldark armour” - George to his buddy, can't remember name - Yep, it's to his Uncle Cary.
“I see no scullery maid mama” - ? to ?
There is a bit of a clue contained in the last quote, there aren't many of those relationships in the show, and one has already been guessed at in the comments ;)
GREAT NEWS POSTERS..... Poldark gets renewed for Season 2 (books 3&4) Yea ;)))
ReplyDeleteI trying to hold off reading the books until the hiatus......
This episode is another big time jump.... 2 yrs sense Jim went to Bodmin jail.... smelting plant running well and stealing George Warlaggens' profit...
I can't wait to see the more human side of Ross, he's been a little too heroic thus far.... he must really get drunk as Georges' party to bet the mine on cards.... that's a bonehead move I'd only expect from Francis...
I can't wait to see the lady Demelza has become, I knew her Christmas party stealing the show was only the start.....
Yeah, I'm holding off reading them until the summer. More to do with lack of time than anything else though if I'm honest, lol.
ReplyDeleteThere isn't too much of a time jump since the last episode, Jim was sentenced back in Ep 3 and there's been a few jumps already so we're about right for seeing his release soon.
The darker side of Ross is great to see, Aidan Turner does the angry brooder very well so I've been waiting patiently for us to get to this point of the show, lol. Yes, that card game, it's a puzzler isn't it...
Ah so its who says the quote about rumors being attached to miss veritys name?
ReplyDeleteThat's the one, the little gossiping minx that she is :( Don't get me wrong, the show needs a character like her, and I think she's played wonderfully, but she is a right cowbag of a role! lol
ReplyDeleteI see no sculler maid mama - Elizabeth to Ruth
ReplyDeleteI just can't place the others, grrr.
Yes, it is Elizabeth who has that line, but Ruth isn't her mother :o :p hehe
ReplyDeleteOMG, Just shoot me, guess I need to pay attention to the dialog instead of the gorgeous man taking center stage. :D Ah, so with a comma, Elizabeth to Morwenna. If that's not it, I give up. lol
