Last year, Fox kicked off new series pickups with an order to Gotham a week before the start of upfront week. Will the network lead the pack again this year? It is a real possibility as there is another big genre Fox drama with a pre-sold title and a big commitment that had long emerged as a lock, Minority Report. Elsewhere on the drama side, music-and-drugs coming of age tale Studio City starring Eric McCormack and medical drama Autopsy aka Rosewood starring Morris Chestnut appear to be on solid footing, with Frankenstein said to possibly have a shot. The network already has Scream Queens from the creators of Glee in series production.
For a second consecutive year, a drama by a writer from Shonda Rhimes’ school of showrunning headlined by a multiple Oscar nominee is getting strong buzz heading into the home stretch. Last spring, it was Peter Nowalk’s How To Get Away with Murder starring Viola Davis, this time it is Jenna Bans‘ untitled project toplined by Joan Allen. Rhimes has a contender again via Shondaland, the Jennifer Schuur-written The Catch starring Mireille Enos. A third thriller drama with a female lead, Runner starring Paula Patton, also is said to be in serious contention. NBC’s A.D. may have crashed but another biblical drama, Kings and Prophets is in the running at ABC, working on backup scripts. Several other ABC drama pilots are getting some mention, including Broad Squad, The Advocate, Quantico, Boom and LA Crime. And then there is Marvel, which has a virtual carte blanche at the network. The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff is eying a series order, with a second project helmed by John Ridley also in the works.

Nothing spectacular, really vague. I assume next we'll have some real sense of what is going on.
ReplyDeleteAll "my" possible fall dramas are going strong. Hoping that ABC give The Advocate a chance, the 2 Shonda pilots seem good as well, like we are surprised.
So I guess kingmakers wasn't very good since both times they haven't mentioned it. And sort of okay with lucifer not getting picked up. If it goes down to cheerleader death squad and tales of the dark side I hope they go with cheerleader death squad. And also this might be a spoiler but lyndie greenwood who plays jenny in sleepy hollow is in the tales of the dark side pilot does this mean shes leaving sleepy hollow?
ReplyDeleteI want Cordon to premiere in the fall!!
ReplyDeleteI did not know that, i love the actress
ReplyDeleteBut in every episode, there will be new actors, so that doesn't mean anything
Oh didn't know they would change actors each episodes. Well I guess she isn't leaving. I like her too, I hated that she didn't have much to do on season 2.
ReplyDeleteI am kind of disappointed that Cheerleader Death Squad isn 't going as strong as people expected
ReplyDeleteBTW i think Tales from the Darkside could be big on CW, since it has new actors every episode, they could throw their biggest stars there. Imagine if they used Barry from Flash and Oliver from Arrow for an episode and promote it during Flash/Arrow, they could get rating over 1.0 easily
Me too, especially since she was promoted to regular
ReplyDeleteOhhhh didn't think about that for tales of the dark side. And felicity too :). Lol maybe they could pick up both tales and cheerleader up.
ReplyDeleteYeah hopefully she gets a good story line in season 3.
ReplyDeleteHmm..no word on Lucifer yet. Shame.
ReplyDeleteEvery year there's a couple pilots Deadline never mentions that end up getting a pickup. This year I hope it's Lucifer. It won't be as good as the comics but I really want to see it. And for The CW it's Tales From the Darkside.
ReplyDeleteI want Cordon + Cheerleade Death Squad to premiere in fall
ReplyDeleteAlso, do you think NBC will really wait for Chicago Med until midseason? I think they need hit show already and this one is most likely going to be one so i think they should premiere it in fall
ReplyDeleteI was looking forward to Lucifer & Frankenstein. hopefully in the next few weeks we'll hear something about them.
ReplyDeleteSeason-zero website called it a Revenge 2.0. Here ther pilot review
ReplyDeletehttp://season-zero.com/kingmakers-abc-pilot-preview-revenge-2-0-a-spin-off-that-doesnt-say-its-name/
I think they could premiere it after the Flash/Arrow but they really need a new hit female skewing show in case TVD tanks.
ReplyDeleteThere is only one Shonda pilot (The Catch aka Smoke & Mirrors).
ReplyDeleteYes but there is one also from one of Shonda's writers(Jenna Bean or something) not sure if she still works under her.
ReplyDeleteI think that is like saying that How to Get Away with Murder is not from Shonda.
ReplyDeleteDidn't realise Limitless was from the same producers as Scorpion, my interest just went up! Minority report is one I was always going to check out anyway. Of The CW pilots I won't be watching the Arrow/Flash spin-off, Cordon sounds good but knowing Julie she'll use all the wrong ingredients. Of the other two I'd much rather Tales from the Darkside got picked up.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it hasn't been mentioned yet I am still rooting for Kingmakers. Also glad that Boom got mentioned.
ReplyDeleteMy take:
ReplyDeleteFOX: Rooting for Lucifer and Frankenstein. Unsurprised by Minority Report's front runner status, although I think it will underperform due to poor casting decisions. I don't understand why they are even trying comedies as their roster is already struggling and they have heavy comedic elements in both Lucifer and Scream Queens. And I have no clue why FOX is even trying with Autopsy (now the third name change for Rosewood) as medical drama is overcrowded this year.
NBC: Rooting for Endgame and The Curse of the Fuentes Women. Unsurprising that they are waiting for midseason for Chicago Med, as it only premiered to a 2.0 after the Voice. The buzz seems to have died down as people seem still to be focused more on Greys. The smaller order is very good news for The Night Shift. And, potentially, for Heart Matters. Interesting that WB seems to be in a very weak place negotiation wise (even with Blindspot's high profile casting). Making a package renewal highly implausible. Also equally interesting is Nellie is under the impression that NBC could return with zero comedies. Love is a four Letter Word is the wildcard here.
ABC: Rooting for Boom, Broad City, and Quantico. Will a NBA comedy fare better than Playmakers did? Interesting that Kingmakers was not mentioned. Why would they do LA Crime with the horrible ratings of American Crime? Joan Allen on TV seems like Hope Davis 2.0 and probably is better for cable.
CBS: Limitless as a TV series won't work. It barely worked as a movie (especially with the horrible time shift ending). Both medical dramas look to break out big. NBC would be wise to wait until midseason for Chicago Med as both pilots have been reviewed very positively. Otherwise, it will be left behind before it already started.
CW: Seems like typical CW with limited space due to their mass renewals earlier in the year. The most interesting thing is if the CW will schedule Saturdays and if any other network follows suit.
Because LA Crime is probably a network version of True Detective or Fargo, and not a dark cable like series about race relations. The Joan Allen series (produced by a writer of Gray's Anatomy/Scandal) does not sound like a cable series to me, and Joan Allen seems closer to Viola Davis than Hope Davis.
ReplyDeleteShonda doesn't produce it.
ReplyDeleteUr right I copied what Nellie wrote in the article.
ReplyDeleteYeah it sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteJenna Bans one isn't from Shonda's production company though.
ReplyDeleteThe networks have still to screener the pilot, which they will do next week.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what the John Ridley Marvel project is about.
ReplyDeleteOhhh so close can't wait to find out which shows get picked up.
ReplyDeleteLooks like some of the pilots that that I'm interested in checking out are in serious contention. I definitely like Runner, Smoke and Mirrors (The Catch), Agents of SHIELD spin-off, Endgame, Blindspot and Limitless. Also like Lucifer, but not much was said about it. Hope it has a chance.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was. My mistake then
ReplyDeleteI think you accidentally copy pasted something that wasn't mean to ;)
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to use the "reply to replies via email" feature for the last few, but can't seem to get it work properly, lol
ReplyDeleteI've read a rumor it's about Ms.Marvel/Kamala Khan
