The very first and last pilots ordered by Fox this year seem to be garnering the most early buzz, drama Minority Report, based on the Steven Spielberg movie, and comedy Grinder starring Rob Lowe as TV lawyer playing a real one at the family law firm. It is shaping up to be a strong year for 1990s heartthrobs at Fox, with John Stamos‘ comedy, in which he plays a version of himself, also in serious contention. Also talked about early on is 48 Hours ‘Til Monday starring Sarah Chalke and Rob Riggle.
Last year, the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama pilot How To Get Away with Murder was an early standout and kept the momentum to a series order and a spot on Thursday, joining Rhimes’ other two ABC series, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Following HTGAWM‘s breakout success, it’s no surprise that another Shondaland mystery drama, Jennifer Schur’s The Catch starring Mireille Enos, is among the ABC pilots getting early buzz. And just like last year, there is a Marvel project whose existence noone is allowed to acknowledge that will likely fly under the radar until landing on the ABC schedule. Last year it was Agent Carter, this time it is an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff featuring characters from the original series.

After this review ( http://season-zero.com/quantico-abc-pilot-preview-a-bomb-thats-about-to-explode-tick-tock/ ) I'm surprised that Quantico is not mentioned in the article.
ReplyDeleteThe article states that many of the pilots have been late this pilot season, so it is possible that Quantico has not been widely seen by the ABC suits to build buzz. Great script does not necessarily mean great pilot, the director could have messed it up or the casting might be off.
ReplyDeleteThere is practically nothing of substance said but I always enjoy reading these nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteIf ABC seriously picks up Chevy.. URGH! At leas dump it on Fridays if they must do do that but I hope they don't ruin of the midweek blocks with that
I think Quantico would be a good thing for ABC to pick up too.
ReplyDeleteCheerleader Death Squad, Cordon and the Flarrow spin off were the obvious picks up for the CW. I just wonder if the CW is going to pick up more than three shows since they renewed pretty much everything.
ReplyDeleteAfter cancelling Almost Human, they can shove Minority Report.
ReplyDeleteI'm really excited to see Smokes & Mirrors.
ReplyDeleteIt kinda hurts to see that Code Black has good chances. I mean i wanted Maggie Grace back on TV for so long and then she gets a role but steps down at last minute :(
ReplyDeleteGlad to see Cheerleader Death Squad and Cordon
No Curse of Fuentes Women yet :(
Wishing Luck to Minority Report and Limitless, but looks like Dead People is probably not going to get picked up and I am still wondering if Disney/ABC will announce a Star Wars series this weekend???
ReplyDeleteI was wondering about Quantico too...
There aren't many pilots I'm that interested in this year, so much like in 2014 when I wanted Agent Carter and in 2013 when I wanted AOS I will keep my fingers crossed for the AOS spin-off.
ReplyDeleteHoping that Boom and Kingmakers get picked up to series!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see Warrior picked up just to see what kind of show it is; it's premise is so weird for a live action tv show that I'm really curious as to what could end up being: either attrocious or great.
ReplyDeleteI'm slightly rooting against Super Clyde because I want to keep Axl on The Middle :P
1. Besides a couple of shows the rest seems dull
ReplyDelete2. There seems to be no big names this year
John Stamos is the biggest name there
ReplyDeleteI could see Chevy ending up next to LMS on Fridays, but if ABC decides to give it the post MF... that would be idiotic. Unless they did it for launching purposes and then move it to Fridays to try give the night some more track, but that seems unlikely
ReplyDeleteIs that good or bad
ReplyDeleteNo surprise CSD and Cordon are frontrunners for the CW. CsD for fall, Cordon and A/F for midseason.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear Blindspot, Code Black and The Catch are doing well. If picked up I will most likely watch.
It's not like a movie star, but he is pretty recognized. He was on Full House after all.
ReplyDeleteTrue but he's no Viola or Taraji like this season
ReplyDeleteEven on Fridays I would rather the thing not be picked up. The have promising multi cams in development like Uncle Buck that would go better there. Chevy... urgh!! I think the show will attract a ton of old viewers but be a huge demo flop. Hopefully they don't try to pair it with The Goldbergs.
ReplyDelete(Side note, in case you can't tell, I am not able to be very objective when it comes to this as I really dislike Chevy Chase)
Really nothing I'm interested in at all. FOX can shag off with their genre shows, I know better at this stage.
ReplyDeleteI'm still super surprised CDS is getting so much buzz, I think it sounds terrible. Then again CW's highest rated shows are among my least favourite on TV.
Cordon sounds good but will probably be ruined by love triangles. Limitless I might check out, depends how the cast are really and the procedural nature will more than likely push me away. I'll definitely at least try the AOS spin-off though since I still watch AOS.
Every year I'm watching more and more cable shows and less broadcast.
Nobody regarded Taraji as that big of a name a year ago I think. Those things change.
ReplyDeleteI wish we could get a confirmation that the AOS spin-off is for the fall and not for midseason. Some sites have hinted at that so I believe it is possible but I wish we could get it confirmed. I can't root for it until then as it means rooting against Carter and I don't want to do that
ReplyDeleteI also dislike Chevy Chase, so I also wouldn't like to see this getting picked, but honestly I don't know, ABC makes weird choices sometimes
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel, but I'm still going to give it a shote, because I like the film and novel and I am happy when anyone tries to get more sci-fi out there.... I'm hoping that maybe Katee Sackoff will convince Karl Urban to be on her upcoming sci-fi work (Wrote, will co-produce with Continuum production peeps, and star in) Rian for Netflix....
ReplyDeleteSo now that NBC has become the Dick Wolf network with Chicago Med's very likely addition, all that''s left to figure out is where to schedule all of his series.
ReplyDeleteBlindspot and Endgame both being in the same category makes me think that NBC will ultimately choose one or the other.
Glad to hear you also dislike Chevy Chase :D
ReplyDeleteI probably sound bitter lol, and I promise I am not usually like this but the idea of this show staring the guy has a profound effect on me.
Anyway, ABC only needs two comedies for the fall, hopefully they pick one of the multi cams for Friday and pick something/ anything that is not Chevy Case for Wednesday. I would then suggest picking two additional single cams and do this on Tuesday:
Fall and Spring: Black-ish | Fresh Off the Boat | Marvel's Agents of Shield | Marvel's Agents of Shield Spin-Off
Winter: Black-ish | Fresh Off the Boat | New Comedy #3 | New Comedy #4 | Marvel's Agent Carter
That way, they would get to sample more than just 1 single cam but with very limited risk since it's just for 8-10 weeks. If they work, they can bring them back the next year, if not - no biggie! In addition, winter is a perfect period for them to try this on since viewing levels are high and, most importantly, there is no voice on the night! I also think Carter would look better at 10pm as it has the kind of ratings of a 10pm show and I think the audience it has is loyal enough to follow it there. With some luck, the New Comedy #4 could even be the NBA thing which would be the perfect lead-in.
I think they should honestly pick both in case one fails. If it works, they can just air the lesser one on Sundays with A.D. or even in summer, but that is a best case situation. And at least they would have a backup, you know? So that they don't need a hundred hours of Dateline on the schedule again
ReplyDeleteJennifer Lopez is sort of big, though in a different way.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get into AOS, but I loved AC...still hoping they can somehow fit both the spin off and AC in, but I'm sure it's unlikely...Plus I am hoping they announce a Star Wars Live Action Series, finally!
ReplyDeleteI strongly recommend you giving AOS another shot. The show becomes totally different towards the end of Season 1 and is outstanding from then onwards. I realize it is unusual for shows to take that long to build up but it's really worth it when you get there.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the Star Wars thing coming from? It's the first time I am hearing of the rumor!
(By the way, long time no talk!)
Hi it has been a long time!! XD
ReplyDeleteWell A Live Action Series has been in the works for like 6 years. Before Lucas sold his franchise over to Disney, it was titled, Underworld and may follow young Boba Fett and Quinlin Vos amoung other new bounty-hunter/smuggler characters....
In 2014 it was considered dead, but then just recently, Disney announced that it (or something similar) was back on the table again! (additionally a new bounty hunter/arms dealer like character named Aphra appears in Dark Vader #3....)
Some speculate that they could make an an official announcement at Star Wars Celebration Live over the weekend....
Here's the SpoilerTV link from last end of March 2015 about the revival: http://www.spoilertv.com/2015/03/star-wars-live-action-tv-series-in.html
It's seems likely it would be on ABC to get the most viewership out of it, as opposed to a Disney Premium Channel....
PS: If I get time, I'll give AOS another shot :)
Thanks for the explanation, I had totally missed all that ;) Appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThe Catch now! I liked Smoke&Mirros more!

Possible a pick up or rework for Summer 2016. But for fall/spring I assume that is what we get.
ReplyDeleteKingmakers has been screening already, so not being mentioned here is definitely a bad sign.
ReplyDelete"The Catch" is more catchy.
ReplyDeletePossibly, but S&M more intriguing(pun seni intended) ;-)
ReplyDeleteEndgame will likely be limited to 13-16 episodes because of Wesley Snipes, so I assume NBC will order both Endgame and Blindspot as well as Game of Silence.
ReplyDeleteWARNING: DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER.
ReplyDeleteOh yes I completely agree, all the sites I've read suggest its airing the same time as AOS. I would be gutted if Agent Carter didn't get another season.
ReplyDeleteWith Shades of Blue, NPH, Hereos Reborn and now also Endgame from what you are saying all being limited, NBC is shaping up to have tones of midseason holes. Yikes. I don't think this type of strategy is wise.
ReplyDeleteBut you also thought Warrior was dead, so.
ReplyDeleteWhy did they change the title? The former sounds so much better!
ReplyDeleteNo clue, seems to be more "catchy" . I liked Smoke and Mirrors.
ReplyDeleteI’m curious about Lucifer. The source material is incredible, but Fox seems to want to butcher it completely by turning it into cliched procedural. The problem is that genre/comic fans might not tune in to see typical procedural and will procedural fans consider a show with a damn Satan as a lead?
ReplyDeleteStill hoping it will be good though. Against all odds.
That site only reviews the scripts. And the actual finished pilot could not be good, even if the script is great.
ReplyDeleteBut this pilot has Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, so I expect it to get picked up, since it could open another market for ABC.
Being a TV fan is always risky, but that is no reason to be close minded to things that could end up being great. I always like the weirder shows so if I made a list of 100 of my favorite shows, 80% of them only got one or two seasons. Doesn't mean I'm gonna watch safer CBS procedurals that could last a decade. I liked AH but I will gladly watch any genre show Fox decides to air.
ReplyDeleteIt was The Catch, then they changed it to Smoke and Mirrors, and now it's back to The Catch again.
ReplyDeleteHoping they choose S & M finally.
ReplyDeleteNo prob! :)
ReplyDelete"Steps down" is code for she was let go.
ReplyDeleteI really don't want any of Coulson's team to leave for the spin-off. Well, maybe Hunter and Bobbie and Mack (though they are not team Coulson, for now), but no one else.
ReplyDeletePriyanka Chopra is equally big.
ReplyDeleteFirst time I head of her
ReplyDeleteI think Smoke&Mirrors was perfect title
ReplyDeleteSame here. Worked perfectly for me.
ReplyDeleteWow so not surprised lucifer isn't getting buzz since it looks like they're switching a lot from the comic books. And what about quantico and kingamkers? I need these two to make it to series. Also supergirl is it too late for it to switch to the cw?
ReplyDeleteAnd 2 marvel shows. I'm sort of curious to see what they're about.
ReplyDeleteI think the cast are far too expensive for CW. I'm not sure about Lucifer since season-zero website seemed to like the pilot. Maybe the Fox Exec didn't like it.
ReplyDeleteNothing sounds good to me. They're all so blah. I'm glad I have a lot of returning favorites.
ReplyDeleteWell Deadline and these other media sites are NEVER right on the money, and every year there are ALWAYS pickups that they will report as "cold" or "a longshot" so def take these articles with a grain of salt.
ReplyDelete"Wow so not surprised lucifer isn't getting buzz since it looks like they're switching a lot from the comic books."
ReplyDeleteWhen reading the comments, we have to be careful when Deadline writes it's getting buzz or it's not getting buzz. That simply means that networks are talking about it. I've read enough Pilot Panic lists to know that this is the easiest to change and shows that are "getting buzz" last update is not next update and the opposite.
I'd be surprised if Lucifer is not heavily in contention for a pickup at FOX. Most sites have it as a very promising pickup.
That's the only one at FOX I really care about.
ReplyDeleteThere had been rumors about possible issues on Rush Hour as well as speculation anout Supergirl possibly moving to CBS sibling the CW, which appears completely unfounded, at least for the time being.
ReplyDelete^ interesting about supergirl.
IDK, every year this feels more and more like guesswork to me...
ReplyDeleteShe has almost 9.5M followers on twitter.
ReplyDeleteAnd she's huge in India.
ReplyDeleteI am just happy that she is getting out and is expanding her talents outside the muck of shitty story lines prevalent in Bollywood.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind supergirl moving to the cw but can the cw afford it? And will they have space for it and will it be connected to the arrowverse? So many questions lol.
ReplyDeleteSince the vampire diaries is a sinking ship, they could shove it to Thursday at 8.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of hoping Warrior dies. NBC had a similar martial arts pilot called "Bloodline" a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteBloodline sounded stronger than Warrior does, and it wasn't picked up....
Ohhhhhh that would be really good. When ringer switched to the cw how far into pilot season did this happen?
ReplyDeleteI still think the spin off will be Inhumans centric with Skye occasionally crossing over.
ReplyDeleteStudio City is the only one I'm looking forward to right now. Hopefully some good trailers will change my mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Quantico isn't on the buzz list almost everyone who has read the script has been raving about it. And as I love HTGAWM another show in the same setting would be so interesting, bonus is priyanka I love her and quality show is much better that boring Bollywood movies.
ReplyDeleteAlso the fact that Reign and BatB are probably on the fast track to fill the summer schedule, it does open up a bit of room for some freshman shows.
ReplyDelete
