Outlander Reviews TPIn this episode, “By the Pricking of My Thumbs”, we meet the Duke of Sandringham who Jamie hopes will help clear his name so he can return to Lallybroch with Claire. Claire’s friendship with Geillis leads her to discover several secrets that both help and endanger her.
Previously on Outlander, Jamie, Claire, and the MacKenzies returned to Castle Leoch after rescuing Claire from Black Jack Randall. Upon their return, Colum expressed his displeasure that Dougal and the others also raised money for the Jacobite cause while collecting rents for him. And Jamie adjusted to his role and responsibilities as a husband.
Jamie is happy to hear about the arrival of the Duke of Sandringham. He hopes that since the duke has always been fond of him in the past that he’ll help him receive a pardon. Claire warns Jamie that he shouldn’t trust the duke due to his friendship with Black Jack Randall. Seeking Ned Gowen’s advice, Jamie presents a written complaint before the duke about Black Jack Randall’s treatment of the Scots, in particular Claire. The duke agrees to do Jamie a favor if he’ll do one for him in return which results in Jamie becoming injured.
When Claire confronts Laoghaire about the ill wish that was left under her bed, she learns that Geillis sold it to Laoghaire. She is happy to hear that Geillis didn’t know the ill wish was meant for her. Claire gains some knowledge from Geillis that she uses to persuade the Duke of Sandringham to aid Jamie’s cause. Claire finds herself in trouble when she doesn’t heed Jamie’s advice to stay away from Geillis.
I liked that this episode got back to life in Castle Leoch. I missed seeing some of the castle inhabitants like Mrs. Fitz and especially Geillis. I’ve always thought Geillis was an interesting character, and one I wasn’t sure how to take exactly. This episode focused more on Claire’s friendship with Geillis, and yet I’m still not certain of her. (I haven’t read ahead in the books so I haven’t spoiled myself for how things turn out.)
There weren’t any voiceovers in this episode and the episode moved fairly quickly with a lot happening. I like that they aren’t relying too much on the voiceovers so it gives the audience a better chance to see the events from various points of view which worked well in this episode.
Here are a few teasers from this episode:
-Claire recalls a conversation Frank and Reverend Wakefield have about the Duke of Sandringham
-Claire becomes suspicious when events are a little too convenient
-Laoghaire tells Claire that Jamie belongs to her.
-Colum exiles someone from Castle Leoch.
-The Duke of Sandringham becomes nervous when Jamie is injured.
