Helix - The Ascendant - Review
Last week we saw Peter set Alan up to die, Kyle finally be cured, Landry walk free from his fall and Sarah and Julia trick Amy into believing she was immortal. Also, a rather satisfying end to Amy, so we think, when the island got gassed by the Navy.
"There's no going back now" Peter
Peter this episode confirmed our worst fears, that whatever his future maybe it won't be with the CDC team. Peter this episode is reborn as Eli, which means ascendant (I refuse to start calling Peter Eli), the "trials" he faced such as killing people and the truth test was Anne's way of seeing if he had what it takes to be a leader. He does and got given the position to become head of the Abbey. I only see two options for Peter now, either he manages to kill the CDC team or they kill him. There is no third option, it's literally killed or be killed now.
Peter and Anne this episode also shared an intimate kiss. It's been on the cards for a while now, but I was still rooting for Peter to see what he's doing as unspeakable cruelty. He didn't and now him and Anne have now something stronger than just a mutual understanding they have an intimate relationship. Speaking of intimate, Peter this episode had shower sex with Anne. In what was the easily the show's most sexually explicit moment, where Peter and Anne undressed and embraced each other in a steamy shower. I was quite shocked at the amount of nudity and sexual content within the scene, mainly because it's never really happened on the show before, there was that that one scene previously with Julia and Sergio in the bedroom, but this one was more passionate and intimate. Helix never involved nudity or any sexual content within it's first season, so it appears that the writers are upping their game in terms of holding nothing back. It's becoming a proper cable show, with all the cable qualities, which is not a bad thing at all.
Kyle, Sarah and Soren this episode were plotting to leave the island, much to Peter's dismay. The cult were hot on their tales, they were the cults prey. When Kyle, Soren and Sarah made it to the tower with the helicopter fast approaching I hoped that they would get picked up, but Peter ruined that and decided to shoot at the helicopter. Despite the CDC team being his friends if he were to let them leave he would come off as weak, and he doesn't want that since he's finally found a place he can fit in. With Peter knowing their exact location and with a gun I can see Kyle risking his life in the finale so that Sarah and Soren can leave, it would be the noble thing to do, but not necessary the right thing. Soren needs him; I don't think he would be able to cope if he lost someone else.
Speaking of Soren, this episode he had to witness the death of his mother, Olivia, at the hands of Peter. Soren has been through much more than a normal child would their entire life, and when things seemed to be looking up for him with his mother helping his friend Kyle, she gets killed. Peter I believe snapped her neck, with Soren watching on. It was a brutal killing, and just shows how far Peter has come to be able to kill someone without showing signs of remorse. It also makes a horrifying statement about Peter, if you lie you die. I was hoping that Kyle would cover Soren's eyes because that surely will leave a scar on him, but if he focused on his eyes Soren might have screamed or cried. Cameron Brodeur who plays Soren was fantastic the entire episode portraying the emotional response, and the vulnerability of Soren, he deserves to be praised for that. He is definitely a young actor to watch out for.
"That's just the thing, it was too easy" Alan
Elsewhere, Alan and Julia embark on a little adventure to find seeds from mother. What they found though was more than just seeds; it was the remains of the mother tree, buried right under the Abbey. Julia now has what she needs to prevent the impending outbreak from Ilaria, but with only a day left I'm wondering if everything she is doing will be for nothing. She and Alan also shared some emotional scenes this episode. Alan begins to question everything that's happened including Narvic C and her involvement with Ilaria.
I had thought that Julia wasn't at Ilaria because she wanted to be there, but because she was infiltrating them. Now it appears as if she is fully committed to their plans. It makes me wonder what might have happened to her to change her feelings toward them. She opposed them in Season 1, but has now become blinded by what they're doing. Yes, she wants to prevent genocide, but if she really took into account what Alan was saying she would see that some of the things he was saying made sense. Why would it take someone as brilliant as Hatake several years to create Narvic C? However, like Peter, she’s finally found somewhere where she belongs, even if it means siding with the enemy.
This episode is definitely the turning point in Alan and Julia's relationship, they're done. It was heart-breaking seeing Alan, a man with few emotions, confess that he would have killed over and over again for her. He loved Julia and tried this episode to persuade her to think about what she's doing. It didn't work and eventually Alan pulled a gun on her, but she had a gun also. Billy Campbell and Kyra Zagorsky deserve a round of applause for their work this episode, they both were fantastic. Billy Campbell especially pulled of one of the best performances I've seen from him throughout the shows run, and if I was on the Emmy board I would heavily consider him. The last thing we hear is a gunshot. The cliff-hanger was excellent, but really there are only so many outcomes that can happen, it's quite predictable how things will turn out. Julia can't die because she's immortal, so either Alan dies, which won't happen or they just get flesh wounds from the bullets. Either way the finale is going to be killer.
Summary
It was another excellent episode jam packed with content. Helix showed other shows how a penultimate episode should look like, it sets the finale up nicely with many things left open such as Peter coming to kill Sarah and Kyle, and Julia and Alan possibly shooting one another. The acting again this episode was fantastic, the cast have really upped their game since Season 1, and have become much stronger actors. If this show isn't renewed for a third season I give up, because this show deserves another season.
As always, thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of "The Ascendant"
What did you think of the episode?
ReplyDeleteGreat Episode :) I loved when Anne was like "You have to ask Eli" and I literally had the same reaction as Julia haha but I was surprised that he actually ask her for money because that seemed like the old Peter like Julia said. Soren was breaking my heart this episode. I never got to like Olivia but that in the end she believed in her son and helped the CDC team was a nice touch instead of just killing her. I really hope that they get off the island and that Kyle and Soren live happily ever after :) I get that Sarah wants to save her child but I have to be honest I didn't like that part of the episode. How can she just leave all these women behind? but I was very surprised that she finally did something and copped off Anne's toes hah. I liked Julia and Alan scenes but it was quiet predictable that Alan wasn't helping her especially after he asked for the gun. As well we know that Julia will survive as she is still there in the future part and we know that Julia was first surprised to see that Caleb took her to Alan's grave so he is alive, too? Maybe Peter shows up behind Alan and Julia shoots him. It was a clever cliffhanger but I didn't like it at all!!! because I need the next episode now haha :D great review :)
ReplyDeleteI liked it. Not as good as Plan B, but definitely still a nice lead-up to a finale. Throughout the entire episode I was begging them to say the names of either of the two children, though. I guess they really did drop the future timeline after all. Can't wait to see what they'll do for a finale!
ReplyDeleteIt was, I was laughing when they said "Eli" as well. Peter might have a different name now, but he'll always be doing things for his own greed and power. I disliked Olivia a lot during the season after the things she had done, but she redeemed herself this episode, shame that it was too late. A lot of people on twitter last night were saying the same thing "Soren was breaking my heart" I'm glad we've gotten to know him a little better these last few episodes.
ReplyDeleteI believe Anne released all those people, if the promo is any indication. Sarah should have cut the other toe of the other foot. That's the least she deserves.
That kind of confirms in a way that Julia has no idea what happened to Alan, and that he survived the cliffhanger. He either died somewhere else or is still on the island, but you have to ask yourself why would he still be on the island.
Next episode we will finally learn who Caleb is. I saw a tweet by the actor, so the future storyline gets picked up again right at the end which Is better than nothing, even though I had hoped to learn who he is about 10 episodes ago.
ReplyDeleteIn the finale the Caleb mystery will unfold, finally A tweet was posted by a reviewer who interviewed the actor "A big thanks to @JimmyThorburn for the interview today! So excited to see the Caleb mystery unfold in the #Helix season finale!
ReplyDeleteWell, you relieved one headache. :) By the way, the emotional appeal in this episode was very high. I must admit I actually shed a tear during the Soren scene. It was really dramatic and well-done. I NEVER shed a tear during a Helix episode, even during some of Season 1's more sad moments.
ReplyDeleteI saw the episode an hour ago and I have to say that Kyle -Soreen dynamic was best thing in that episode.I hope Kyle really makes it off the island and I will really like him to be in season 3 If the show gets renewed.Sarah was a little selfish in this episode with her kid stuff but Alans reaction was more instead of making sure of Sarah and his baby makes it off the island he continued his obsession over ilaria and proved he only loves julia.Julia on the other hand I get her i wasnt disturbed by her loyalty in ilaria because she is immortal and she is trying her best to stop ilaria from killing humans given the circumstances.Peter and Anne need to be put down ASAP but I have a feeling that may not go as planned or not ifficiently. As for calebs really identity I dont think is too impotant who he really is sarahs baby or the one that Peter holds.Because I cant see how a baby would be raised alone. What I really mean is it is important to me to see who raised the baby after the abbey burned down and assumed that the rest of the people were either killed or escaped. But someone was left behind for sure to raise that kid and I think that someone is either Alan or someone I cant think of.But why that someone woulb still there after 30 years?Because i dont think that future foward thing will involve showing another place in the finalle than the island.Maybe is because that person believes the humans are gone? Also something that I didnt see anywhere mention and I think is important and must be related somehow to the story and at least to someone of the cast is how the hell julias father end up on that island. Why of all islands he choose that!
ReplyDeleteFinally, I expect kyle and Soreen to make it and see them maybe not in 30 years from now but generally see them off the island.
""There's no going back now"
ReplyDeleteI had thought that Julia wasn't at Ilaria because she wanted to be there, but because she was infiltrating them. Now it appears as if she is fully committed to their plans. It makes me wonder what might have happened to her to change her feelings toward them....

I feel like that, 'There's No Going Back Now', is a double entrande! Like you said, everyone is forced to try and survive, simply because of the choice Peter (and Anne) make, but almost no better, was Alan's choice to also finish what he started. It's not that I don't think he is probably right, that Ilaria can't be trusted and may have set Julia up, but more over, if there is a NarvikC, what choice does Julia have, but to try and minimize the damage??? The problem is, that it seems like Ilaria is fighting within themselves so it's hard to say who is right or wrong here, unless that was all a ploy to get Julia to the Island. (I'm still wondering how Sergio and her were able to leave together, because her info initially came from someone(s) who was denying the wishes of the board, unless, again, it was all a ploy and "kill two birds with one stone" kind of thing?????...)
Obviously we know both characters survive the gun shootout, but it will be interesting to see if one of them was injured! (Could that be how Julia gets sick?)
"Cameron Brodeur who plays Soren was fantastic the entire episode portraying the emotional response, and the vulnerability of Soren, he deserves to be praised for that. He is definitely a young actor to watch out for."
Yes! He has been a fantastic addition to the cast. I was SO sad he didn't make it off the Island yet!!
Other Thoughts:
Interesting not to have seen Laundry anywhere. I was trying to figure out if Peter and Anne were mutilating all the bodies that Laundry brought in from the gas or if those were other bodies, but if so, I don't recall seeing Amy's face shown...
Thought it was also interesting that Kyle mentioned his mother died when he was young. So at the very least, I think we can assume that, if Doreen was his biological mother, she didn't raise him.
When I first saw the painting for where Mother once resided with the stars shinning down, I immediately thought of "Mother Ship" and aliens!!! And the thing is, even though the roots are under the Abbey, I realized that finding them by breaking up the tile to get underneath the church was an allusion to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which ironically features immortality, bit more over two of it's other films in the franchise (Raiders of the Lost Ark/ Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) feature Aliens!!! And the GREEN fungus along with the one episode title with "Ecto" in it reminded me of Ghostbusters (slimmer is sometimes thought not just to be a ghost, but an "alien ghost" - and we also have Hatake seeing the dead as if they were not), so I'm still wondering if that will be Helix's next jumping off point after all??? I kind of think an alien abduction would be a fun place to go!
Thanks again Robert for your all of your time!! :)
Thank The Stars!! It's driving me nuts nuts nuts! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI kind of like how the fivesome (Sarah, Peter, Alan, Julia, Kyle) is juxtaposed, because they all represent 5 different aspects of love in terms of "family vs duty". You have Sarah who only wants to protect her actual baby (but who may never have a normal life and actually evolve), and Peter who wants to protect his new family-that he pilfered in a genocidal fashion, Alan who doesn't care about his actual biological family, but cares about saving humanity by destroying Ilaria in genocidal fashion (he even basically abandons soren and kyle again), Kyle seems to want to adopt Soren (But it's unclear if that will continue to interfere with his need to bring Alan to justice), and then we have Julia who has a real love and hate thing with her family, but she is trying her best to save the world (and she could be being used by Ilaria), but believes she has to do everything by herself (until she meets Caleb)...
ReplyDeleteThere's a whole lot of dysfunction here, but I think that's half the fun of this show! XD
Too much emotion in this episode. Everywhere you looked there was something happening to someone -Olivia and Soren plus Kyle, Sarah, Alan and Kyle, Alan and Julia, and then the devilry from Annie and Peter.
ReplyDeleteSo if there is a Season 3, Kyle will have to look for that safety deposit box number that Alan gave him. We will then know what really happened to Alan, how he killed all those immortals and whether it was all really for Julia or he went crazy as well.
Each ep just gets better and better. It's so rare to see that with a show.
ReplyDeleteI find something so hysterically funny about Sarah carrying this fetus in a jar around. I don't know what it is about it, but when she's like this is my son, I just find it funny. It's creepy, weird, but funny. Maybe because it reminds me of an old Basket Case movie from many years ago.
Anne has to go. I think we might get a real satisfying ending to her if those women from the rape/birth room get to her.
Peter has completely gone insane. I'm curious as to what will happen to him. He didn't seem to be on the island in the future with Julia.
I really liked how they had the tree actually being a part of the abbey. Right under their feet.
I'm hoping Kyle gets to adopt Soren.
Julia and Alan, that was an interesting scene. I don't think she kills Alan because she still seemed to be looking for him or something left by him in the future.
Great writing this season. I can't wait to see how it all ends.
I think Julia has good intentions, but from what she said to Alan, I'm not sure she sees herself as human anymore.
ReplyDeleteI bet we get to see Landry in the finale, maybe Amy, too, if she's still alive.
I would love to get another season. The writing has just been so epic. It's a shame not enough people have watched this show. Maybe it's been the timeslot? But they seem to watch 12 Monkeys, you'd think they would stick around for the rest.
I think the women from the birth room will get revenge on Anne. I'm expecting some kind of good scenes with that for the finale.
ReplyDeleteSame here, and it's only taken the writers the entire season to finally answer the Caleb mystery...
ReplyDeleteThat would be good, I'd love the people who were set free to help the CDC team, that would make the playing field more fair as currently there's like 20 cult members and about 3 CDC team members (not including Julia).
ReplyDeleteOh definitely. I rarely shed a tear for any show, but that Soren scene was just too sad, and then Kyle had to say "I'll be your family" which made it even sadder. Such an emotional episode though, and like you I've never shed a tear before last nights episode.
ReplyDeleteIt was the shows most emotional episode yet, especially for the Soren/Kyle scenes. The episode was just full of heartbreak, for so many characters. I'm glad the show did an episode like this because it shows that all the characters aren't as strong as you think they are.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we might see that as the last scene of the finale (kyle finding the safety deposit box) like last season the last scene was Alan in Paris, that I think would be a good end just incase we don't get a season 3, we will at least know the truth about Ilaria and Alan.
I liked the episode but as usual I can't just stay 'in the moment' - what if there's a season 3 (which I really hope!)? Who will be in it, not everyone is immortal. So maybe Alan does die? I mean the make-up department will be really, really busy then if they have to turn him in to an 80 year old each episode as well as do some ppl infected with some gory decease. And a S3 without Hatake would be like, well that can't happen.
ReplyDeleteFinding out who Caleb is is probably what I'm looking most forward to in the finale. Oh and yeah maybe how Peter bites the dust cause he's going to have to bite it, bastard ;)
I was going to mention in the review about Alan, and his intentions. I understand that he wants to stop Ilaria at all costs, but what good will comes out of it if he stops Julia. She is trying to prevent the genocide, and prevent mass casualties. Really despite her wanting to be a part of Ilaria she is still trying to help the human race, but if Alan stops her then he’s pretty much allowing Ilaria to win, and kill off a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI’m not entirely sure if Julia was meant to find mother, I still have a feeling she was sent there to die. Maybe they saw her as a threat and wanted to get rid of her, and thought sending her to the island might have been the best way to do that. (Might have hoped Michael would kill her) I don’t know, but I feel there’s more to it, and like you said some sort of ploy.
I don’t see how she would get sick from a gunshot wound or unless mother is more than just a solution to infertility, and something from mother gets in her bloodstream, making her sick?
I didn't see Amy at all, so I think in the finale we will see her (half dead) and Landry. Not sure what their roles will be in the finale, but I imagine they will have some part to play.
Anything Syfy related I’m in for; I love things about Aliens, even though it’s unlikely I would love to see something like that happen. It would be a fun change, and I’m sure the writers would make a good storyline out of an Alien plot.
I think Season 3 could be on the cards, it’s been getting a lot of 0.2’s recently which is what 12 Monkeys usually gets. Also, since their new show Olympus flopped and got a 0.2 for the premiere Helix’s chances increased a little. I’d love to know what the DVR numbers look like.
I can't believe people aren't tuning in, and I really can't find a reason why. It had the same slot and premiered the same time last year so perhaps it's the writing/storyline that's put people off, which would shock me as the seasons been fantastic. Some viewers might be already committed to other 10pm shows as premiering half way through a season isn't the smartest move or it could be the lead in as that's pretty weak.
ReplyDeleteYes! I want that too, Kyle has become my favorite character (formerly Sergio). The Soren/Kyle scenes were very emotional and definitely some of the best parts. The other scene I really liked was the Julia and Alan scene where he says he would have done anything for her.
ReplyDeleteI just want to know who Caleb, and whether he ties/ how into all this. I also definitely want to know how the Abbey burnt down and who makes it off the island alive. I really hope nothing get left open with some sort of resolution. It could well be Alan who raised the kid, perhaps he raised Caleb, and when Caleb vanished in the middle of the night he could have gone to see Alan perhaps? Maybe Alan created his own "fake grave".
I don't think we will ever know why Hatake came to the island.
I refuse to start calling Peter Eli, it just doesn't sound right.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was watching the episode, I was wondering what you will be calling him on your review.
ReplyDeleteHELIX
ReplyDeleteI was considering calling him Eli, but I thought why start now since their is only two episodes left, and also I couldn't help but laugh when they changed his name.
ReplyDeleteWill anyone be calling Peter "Eli" from now on, because I certainly wont.
ReplyDeleteThat's clever, I wonder if the writers intended that or if it's just a coincidence.
ReplyDeleteSo many things could happen in Season 3,the writers could take so many different routes, but at the moment it does feel like there writing it as if it's the shows final season. If the show does goes forward then they could just continue on from the the present timeline as there is still a huge 30 year gap.
ReplyDeleteA season 3 without Sergio would be annoying, but I could live with that if Kyle survives. I think a lot of people including myself are looking forward to finding out who he is, I've been waiting since episode 2. I think Peter will die in the finale, there really isn't another option after what he's done.
I couldn't agree more, the writing has been fantastic and every episode tops the previous one. I really want a season 3, and hopefully since their new shows has flopped (0.2 for premiere) they will renew Helix.
ReplyDeleteAs long as Anne dies I will be satisfied, also I want Peter to die as well. Both of them deserve it, and it wouldn't make much sense really to keep them alive after what they have done.
As for Kyle I'm just hoping he will make it off the island with Soren. Something good has to happen to Soren so getting adopted by Kyle sounds about right, also, It would mean both of them could be in Season 3 which would be fantastic news.
Alan wont die, the cliffhanger was kind of pointless as if she killed him where mother is she wouldn't be looking for him in the future. I think the cliffhanger was more for shock value than anything else.
Nah
ReplyDeleteFirst, I don't think that was a dream sequence, was actual scene with Peter and Anne having sex. About sex scenes Julia make one with Balleseros in episode 2x06, so nothing new here.
ReplyDeleteAbout the rest of the episode, I almost knew Soreen's mother will be dead soon, because she have this kind good moments with her son and warning Kyle about Peter's plan.
Peter is more crazy than ever, I hope someone kill him at the season finale. I have the same reaction as Julia when Anne say "you have to ask Eli" and than she discover Eli is Peter.
I hope they not kill Alan off, because we knew Julia is alive in the future, but I just hope she not kill Alan in that moment.
Kyle and Soreen moment was great, I hope both and Sarah escape from this crazy island.
"Peter this episode imagined him having shower sex with Anne. In what was the easily the show's most sexually explicit content, it left me shocked at the level the show took that sex scene too, mainly because it's never happened on the show before and isn't something I ever expected to see on Helix. It was also the first time nudity had been properly introduced into the show, it did come out of nowhere though, but we later see why he had those thoughts; I dare say he might love Anne."I thought that actually happened after Peter (a.k.a. Eli) chopped up the dead people and went into the shower. I really loved the scene and how it was shot.
ReplyDeleteExactly, I agree.
ReplyDeleteI read an i09 review from @ episode 2x03. That writer said that they felt the series was genius by not having anything coherent about it, where I feel that it actually has been way more story-telling-ish, but just hasn't answered some burning questions and/or really have gotten to the bottom of it (like an origin story).
ReplyDeleteAnyways the acting I think was way better this year and IMO the last 4 episodes have brought back some of the more intense aspects of the first season...It's a shame. I think the show is fun!
"I don’t see how she would get sick from a gunshot wound or unless mother is more than just a solution to infertility, and something from mother gets in her bloodstream, making her sick?
ReplyDeleteThat is what I was leaning towards that it had multi-properties and/or can be used in various ways, but you could be right and they won't complicate with that...
"I think Season 3 could be on the cards, it’s been getting a lot of 0.2’s recently which is what 12 Monkeys usually gets."
Oh, I hadn't checked in a while, so that IS good! XD
Very Nice Find!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
ReplyDeleteI guess it depends if he survives and how powerful he becomes in the scheme of things. Like you (and Julia), I too just started laughing, but in truth I wouldn't put it past the writers to reward him for his audacious ambitions and torment us all with 'The Book of Eli' for another season, where we will be forced to take him seriously ^^!!
ReplyDelete"I hope they not kill Alan off, because we knew Julia is alive in the future, but I just hope she not kill Alan in that moment."
ReplyDeleteI don't think she does, because it wouldn't make much sense for her to ask Caleb in the future (season two premier episode), where Alan is and if he can take her to him...unless for some reason she doesn't remember what happened....
"but we later see why he had those thoughts" What I meant by that was the reason he had them thoughts might be because he loved/loves her, but yes it did come after he chopped them dead people up. .
ReplyDeleteI can see it either way. I agree with you that it not clear because of the surreal way they shot it, as if he was just having 'impure' thoughts/extrapolation/day dream, but at the same time that could easily be filmed that way to contrast the mutilation scene, because, despite the insanity of those two things, for Peter they went hand in hand, because sadly all he wants is Anne's love, respect, and approval...
ReplyDeleteI viewed it again, and I'm now kind of leaning towards it being real. It could well be a thought of his because of the way he seemed in the locker rooms, he seemed zoned out as if he was having a day dream. Then again they both were wet and had just had a shower.
ReplyDeleteI kind of took it as Peter was zoned out as if he was having a day dream in the locker rooms when we saw him after the shower scene. After the second viewing of that scene (just now) I'm inclined to lean more towards it being real, as Peter could easily just be thinking about what he's doing instead of having a day dream, also both had just had a shower either way and were bloody from cutting the bodies up.
ReplyDeleteSoren's mother dying will bring Kyle and Soren closer together, and I'm really hoping both will make it off the island.
As for Peter, I think he will die in the finale, and someone such as Alan will kill him. Although, I'm kind of now hoping it's Kyle so that Soren's mind can be put to ease knowing that his mother's killer is dead.
Alan wont die, it wouldn't make sense seeing as Julia asks Caleb in the future timeline if Alan is alive.
"If he survives" I hope he doesn't. Whilst I like the actor, Peter's got to go after what he's done. Also, I wouldn't want them to make Peter a main villain in Season 3 if they weren't planning a decent storyline for him.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure we will find out, well I hope we do. I don't want anything left without a resolution just incase a Season 3 doesn't happen.
ReplyDeleteYep, Helix has got 0.2's the last four weeks, if it gets that for last nights episode and the finale I can see them renewing it. I wish a website had it's DVR numbers.
I know, I hope we have more flashfoward.
ReplyDeleteI'm siding with you on this one, the show has focused on storytelling a lot this season.
ReplyDeleteDespite the show not giving us an origin story about the island/Ilaria the show has managed to answer some of our other burning questions from Season 1, and at least is wrapping up things from this season.
I never knew any of the actors when they got cast on Helix and when I saw them I thought the acting was pretty bad, but I overlooked that. This season all the actors, except maybe Jordan Hayes who I think tends to over act, have been excellent.
Well who says he has to be the main villain?! -The thing about this series is that you have characters that are blured in terms of whose good and bad and/or who is the best or the worst.
ReplyDeleteI mean for instance, Amy could come back and kill Peter, which is only half-baked gratifying since most of think Amy deserves to go too. And even characters like Hatake, someone who was willing to steal kids and experiment on them, even his own biological daughter, is still a fairly likable character, even after he tried to kill Julia! He deserves to go too!
There's a way to put all the bad characters next to each other and have them be oppositions to each other that I think is fun and unpredictable, like Peter verses an Evil Alien colonization! But you also can have Peter eventually hold some important card and actually have him sacrifice himself in the end, making us feel just a little bad about it.
But another problem, at least for me, lies in trying to figure out what Helix philosophical bottom line will be! Is it man verses nature? Is it man verses immortals verses nature? Is it the nature of nature to either destroy or fix evolutionary "problems"? Are there evolutionary problems or only sentinel ones? Is this about consequences of choice and actions? Is this about defining what family is?, Is this about corruptibility? Does everyone here deserve to die or is life unfair and man is like a disease that kills everything in it's wake???
It's somewhat unclear, because it doesn't stick to anything except dysfunctional family dynamics...
Yes please!! :)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't imagine Peter as a "Small villain" because he's such an important character to the show. I could see the show having more than one villain, like we do now, but since Peter has been with us since the pilot making him the main villain (if the show goes forward) I think would be a good idea as we can then get to know different sides of Peter like we're learning about now.
ReplyDeleteI think Amy will be back for the finale, I think she will cause more trouble for Sarah than anyone else. I suppose though if she wanted to hurt her mother she would kill Peter or if she wanted her power back she would kill him.
Is it man verses immortals verses nature? I would say it's this one. I don't think anything's really about defining family, the show leans more towards corruptibility than anything else since we've seen it a few times with these characters during the two seasons.
The shower scene with Peter and Anne was real. The scene was interspersed with their prior activity of chopping the bodies. After they cleaned the blood off of their bodies, they had sex. This was a fantastic, but creepy episode. That birthing room is horrific. What is going to happen now that these crazied women are free? Peter is really NUTS! He and Anne need to be stopped. Kyle and Soren....what a emotional pair they make. So sad for that young boy to go through what he has. Sarah's fetus in that jar is icky. We know that neither Alan nor Julia are dead, so we'll just have to wait until next week to see how it all unfolds. Caleb's indentity should be revealed, finally. Hope it is a surprise, and not the obvious. Season 3? Would love it, but if this is the end, I hope it is cleanly tied up with no loose ends, and the good guys prevail for a change.
ReplyDeleteI had to re-watch that shower scene. At first it seemed as if he was day dreaming (the way he zoned out whilst in the locker room), even though it could still be some form of a dream, I doubt it is since I don't think the writers intended to confuse the audience with that scene. (So yes it's real)
ReplyDeleteI hope that these newly set free woman will help Sarah and Kyle, and go after Anne who is partly to blame for their imprisonment.
I'm hoping in the finale both Anne and Peter are killed, they both deserve to die after what they have done. If Peter does die I hope either Kyle kills him or Alan.
According to a recent tweet (can be seen below) a reviewer interviewed the actor who plays Caleb and he said that the mystery surrounding Caleb will unfold in the finale so I imagine we will know if he's related to anyone we know and how he fits into all this.
I'm slightly more optimistic now about it's chances of a renewal after their new show "Olympus" flopped with a 0.2 for it's premiere. Like you though, if we don't get a season 3 I would like a decent ending and everything to be resolved with no loose ends.
