Hannibal - Season 3 - 11 Spoilers from Bryan Fuller

Thanks to Titania1000 for the heads up.
If you're counting the days (and let's face it, you are) until the delayed third season of Hannibal finally kicks off on NBC, we feel your pain.

So does showrunner Bryan Fuller, a self-described Fannibal who generously jumped on the phone with Digital Spy this week for an in-depth chat about all things season three.

We're pretty sure Hannibal would disapprove of snacking in between meals, but these 11 morsels of new info from Fuller should be just sufficient enough to whet your appetite without ruining it.

1) We'll get a little 007-style action in the early episodes.

"I love Ridley Scott's Hannibal, I just think it's such a fun, gruesome movie that kind of harkens back to Hammer films, and it's Hannibal as James Bond," Fuller enthused. "There's qualities of that that we wanted to bring to the first chapter of the third season, which is the Italy-based material."

We're guessing the motorbike and leathers will play a role here.

2) The season premiere 'Antipasto' is all about Bedelia Du Maurier and her years-long relationship with Hannibal Lecter.

"It really does feel like 'What are we watching?' Will Graham isn't in it, none of the other familiar characters are in it, it's just Hannibal and Bedelia and their history over three different periods of time."

3) ... But even in Florence with Bedelia, Hannibal's still pining for the one who got away.

"In that first episode all about Bedelia and Hannibal, there's just a hint of 'Wouldn't this be better if it were me and Will Graham?' in terms of Hannibal thinking that, and what he misses. Because Bedelia will always be Hannibal's psychiatrist, she'll never be necessarily as intimate and passionate in her relationship with Hannibal as Will and Hannibal are."

4) The rumours are true – we're dropping the cuisine-based episode titles for the second half of season three.

Episodes eight through thirteen will all be named after William Blake's series of Great Red Dragon Paintings, depicting scenes from the biblical Book of Revelation. Clued-up Fannibals will know that in the Harris canon, serial killer Francis Dolarhyde is obsessed with this series of paintings, which give his murderous alternate personality its name.

And we've got specifics. Episode eight is 'The Great Red Dragon...', episode nine is '...And the Woman Clothed in Sun', episode ten is '...And the Woman Clothed with the Sun', and episode eleven is '...And the Beast from the Sea'.

Fuller didn't name episodes twelve and thirteen, but going by this pattern we're guessing that twelve and thirteen will be named 'And the Number of the Beast Is...' and '...666' respectively.

5) Worried about Will's dogs? So are we. But fear not – Fuller confirmed that somebody has been taking care of them while Will and everyone he knows are recuperating from the massacre: "We indicate who is taking care of them, without overly answering it... it is addressed in some way."

  3. I should really start this one. I've never heard someone say something bad about this series.

  4. Very very very impatiently!

  5. That's because it's the best show on tv!

You're very lucky to watch it as a new viewer: it's a fascinating and exciting discovery.
And don't binge it: it's even better when you take time to appreciate it

  6. I was thinking one episode/a day during summer... :-)

  7. I think you should catch up, so you can watch live and this great show can live to tell its story to the end. I'm not from the US but I'd do anything to see more people watching Hannibal - it's truly a fascinatingly twisted tale.

  8. Summer is the perfect time of the year to watch this show! It's so dark, intense and sometimes gore, you'll need a reprieve from it: bright and sunny days will be a good anti dote to the depressing atmosphere.

However I don't know who i'm trying to fool: it will become very hard to stop at one episode a day once you'll reach episode 1x06...
To not binge watch it is how i should have watched it, but really i don't know anyone who had to catch up (and didn't watch live) who was able to restrain himself/herself.

  9. Unfortunately, just like you, I live outside the U.S therefore I'm not able to watch anything live.

    3. I'm cool with this as long as it doesn't continue past SOL-era. Clarice really should mean more to him, than Will Graham ever will, especially because Will should also really be moving on in multiple ways. But it makes sense to see how vulnerable Hannibal is in this time period leading to RD-era. It's something the book never made clear and this prequel part makes that feel more cohesive/understandable to Harris' story.

About 6 & 7: Cool! He seems like a character that deserves to have more spot light and after reading some the the FD-related slides, all I can say is this version of the character looks way more interesting than book and film character.

8 & 1 : def looking forward to both of these. This explains the other 4 time period spoilers too! I am glad they continue to play with time the way they have. I hope they kept one scene I read with a previous character in it in relation to H and B.

    11. Cool! That might be interesting in season 4, depending on when FD story is wrapped up. I would assume the season may end with Hannibal's 'you know what' and that Red Dragon might play out more in season 4, especially since I know FD is a traveler...

  12. HELL YA!!!!!!!!!! XD

  13. 5 - I guess Margo is taking care for Will's dogs. She surely likes them.

  14. I have been a book and film fan for more than 15 yrs, but Fuller's version is just so much more immersive and just presents the story from Hannibal-esque aesthetic from the beginning (something that the films lack possibly due to the order in which Harris wrote them), it's horrifically beautiful and just so compelling. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does as he more aptly approaches source material time periods!!!

  15. Will's dogs being safe is all I need to know about.

  16. The Red Dragon won't appear in season 4: Bryan has previously revealed that the writers took the decision to make this story a mini-series of 6 episodes and no more. So Richard is not coming back. Whatever happens at the end of s3, this arc will be closed.

S4 might be about Clarice if the producers got the rights of SOTL, or a version of SOTL if they don't. In both cases, i'm not anymore eager to see her or a copy of her: the fandom has convinced me with all the hype about how important she should be for Hannibal that her integration to the show would only be a way to romanticize Hannibal, transform the monster in a loveable anti hero, which after everything he did would be very sick.

Mischa fells in the same category unless Bryan added a twist to make Hannibal true to himself, meaning if he looks like the growing and building monster who he should be in the flashbacks related to his childhood.

  17. Looking forward for Hannibal's return!

All of these tidbits sound amazing.

  18. I smell you coming, Samy! XD Can't wait!!

  19. I missed that about FD/Tooth Fairy. Then I am not sure how you can make him an ensamble-like character in six episodes, but I will wait and see...plus It would mean his prequel to SOTL will have to be a bit different too, and I'm not sure how he would do that unless Buffulo Bill becomes a glob trotter instead, given with what this interview says about season 4...

Also I read before we may not see flashbacks of Hannibal, he was concerned about casting a younger version to match MM, but I hope he changes his mind or that we at least get extrapolations form Hannibal's memory palace...

I am a big fan and I did write a piece about what Bryan Fuller has already done in relation to him needing to be anti-hero and how he has used the source material so far here:

But the truth is we still don't know HOW he will go about Mishca since the whole time line is 20-some yrs off...

  20. Ya, either that or Molly Foster or Alana...

  21. Oh my god.... What is this????? ahahahahahhhah I can't even.
    HELL YEAH!!

  22. My excitement knows no bounds. Can't freakin wait!

  23. Hannibal never was just a monster and in the trailer we already see that Will truly forgives Hannibal (probably after learning what happened to Hannibal)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think it could be a possibility that Dolarhyde kills Molly in the season finale - so season 4 could also be about Will completing his transformation (and Hannibal becoming a better person because of Clarice)
