Grey's Anatomy - One Flight Down - Review

Do you remember “the surge”? Episode 9x02, Mark wakes up, and as Webber describes it has “a final surge of energy, they get better before they get worse...in a little while he’ll do what all patients do, he’ll have epiphanies, he’ll tell you what really matters in life, he’ll ask for his family...” It was sad. It was heartbreaking and if you’re a Mark fan like me it meant that not only did a great character die but a big piece of Grey’s Anatomy died too.

Derek Shepherd has had a “surge”. I’d go as far as saying Richard Webber has had a surge too...but let’s get to that later.

Patrick Dempsey is leaving Grey’s Anatomy. This is not a spoiler, before y’all break down in tears of agony and despair. I do not know if PD is leaving or not. I know no more than you do. In fact I probably know less than you do. But seeing season eleven progress, watching and enjoying another excellent episode in 11.20, all the signs are there for a seismic shift for McDreamy

Derek is missing. But frankly that’s not the biggest signal that something is wrong. What jumps through the screen is the enormous epiphany he’s been on since returning from DC. The man is renewed, refocused and all together wayyyyyy too happy. And if that wasn’t enough he’s declared his undying love for Meredith and his desire to have more kids. His departure has been foreshadowed by both
Meredith – “I can live without you. But I don’t want to. I don’t ever want to” and Amelia – “you have never lost the love of your life, you have never cried over the body of the person you love most in this world. You don’t know how that messes a person up”. It is not a coincidence that Meredith and Arizona find themselves locked together in a supply room telling themselves that they are okay, they are alive while Derek is missing.

Derek is having a surge and we, the poor humble, loyal viewer, are on notice for something tragic.

Episode 11.20, One Flight Down, proved to be a pivotal point in this brilliant season of Grey’s Anatomy. A strategic episode, loaded with content, designed to whet the appetite for season finale, designed to signal quite possibly the most dramatic end to a Grey’s season ever. I feel like I’m watching an entirely different show to seasons 7, 8 and 9, possibly even 10.

A plane went down in Seattle promoting a major trauma alert and a potential PTSD melt down. Meredith, one of the first to react, is caught between the panic that something is wrong regarding Derek and the flashback of her own major plane crash ordeal. Desperate to find solace with a kindred spirit she seeks out a distressed Arizona and the two of them ride the emotional storm together. This particular storm is short lived with both doctors able to regroup and re-enter the OR. Through flashback, a calling card of season eleven, we live through Meredith’s last moments with Derek. They are profound and time will tell whether these moments really are their final moments.

Has anyone actually told Maggie anything about Meredith? The poor girl finally finds out about the plane crash that devastated the hospital. This is a plane crash that killed two doctors, that bestowed tainted riches on the survivors, that forced a sell off of the hospital, that created board members out of surgeons. HOW ON EARTH DID SHE NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS?
Amusing as it was listening to another chapter of Maggie verbosing (I think I just made up a verb there) it does seem incredible that she was in the dark. But that wasn’t the only mystery – it seems that all along Arizona has been in the dark about the fact that it was Alex that actually cut the leg off and not, as she had assumed, Callie. Now there are all sorts of things wrong with this....surely you would have post op consultations with the surgeon that did the chop, surely there are other orthopedic surgeons that should have stepped in for Callie, surely Arizona knows that Callie would not have been able to chop the leg off – she had neither the time nor moral authority to do so. And finally, surely someone somewhere would’ve mentioned something. However, setting all this aside, raising this subject so far down the line is, in itself, mysterious. We had been led to believe so far that Arizona had come to terms with the circumstances surrounding her trauma. If it had been an unsatisfactory conclusion perhaps a better epiphany would be for her to acknowledge that Callie made the decision to save her life, irrespective of who physically held the knife to her thigh. Instead the story here was Callie protecting Alex...would this be an issue at all if Arizona’s leg had been chopped off by another Ortho Attending? Perhaps I do it an injustice. The story is also Arizona acknowledging that Callie protected Arizona, that Callie made a sacrifice for her. I appreciated this story arc but I’m struggling to put it in current context.

The mystery continues when I mention a continuity issue with 11.19, which I did not mention in my review. I rewatched the episode, Derek confirmed that the timeline for episodes 11.18 and 11.19 are only one day apart (“she told me last night”). We also know that 11.19 and 11.20 are set on the same day. When did Callie go on her date with the dishy cop? And how is it normal for Callie to be more concerned with Meredith’s PTSD than Arizona’s? She has not cut her ties with Arizona. They are co-parents, they shared a life together...?

What’s going on Shonda? Did a PD decision to leave affect or disturb the ongoing stories of other central couples?

It was good to see that Arizona has come through her trauma. Perhaps she was just a little hyper with the room full of prenatal yoga mums but she is out the other side. As an unlikely alliance, Meredith and Arizona hyperventilating and talking each other up in a supply room was powerful. They were not just in a plane crash, they were lost in the woods for days following in their own version of a horror story. Seeing them convince each other that they are okay was emotional and rewarding and frankly not before time.

Did Richard Webber also have a “surge”? His reunion with Catherine Avery in 11.19 and his sermon to April pointed at the very likely possibility that he will be joining Dr Avery Snr away from Seattle permanently in the near future. I would be sad to see him go but not altogether surprised.

Oh dear, Owen and Amelia’s relationship is far from easy and slowly descending into farce. It almost seems too complicated to keep going and this is Owen’s modus operendi in cutting it dead. This is a very confused coupling and in danger of losing fans even before it’s really got started.

Is there someone out there who can help me to like Stephanie because O.M.G how I don’t care about her love story. I did not understand it. Actually I probably did but more pertinently I did not want to understand it. It was annoying and it felt irrelevant despite the fact that it was actually relevant. The writers are trying with this character, but with this viewer, it’s a big fat fail.

And where oh where is Jesse Williams and Jackson Avery this season, notably absent and surprisingly he is missed.

11.20, One Flight Down was intriguing, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable. Full of important plot points it posed more questions than it answered, and invited us to be on notice for anxious moments ahead. With the arrival of blue lights reflecting in Meredith’s eyes we can only expect the worst while hoping for the best. But what better way to illustrate how much I’m enjoying this ride than to say I can’t wait for this...

  1. I wish they'd kill off Amelia, Stef and Jo. Probably Owen, too. That'd be a start. But yea it looks like Derek is a goner. And I thought the same thing about Richard too especially during his last few scenes last night. Maybe it's a big misdirect and Derek will be fine but Richard will die? They really need to knock a few characters out to reduce the clutter. There's no use in having a cast so big when it means characters either get one line per episode or disappear for weeks.

  3. Where is jackson? He's hardly had anything this season esp last few episodes.
I think PD has said late on that he wants to leave which has changed the storylines. I'm sure Callie storyline has changed. And perhaps wishful thinking but Maggie/Alex could be a thing. Jo is really on the back burner.

I think it would be too tragic to kill Derek now that he's come back and decided he wants his family over his career. So I'm betting he's alive.

For the first time in a very long time, Arizona didn't annoy me. Maggie did. And Stephanie, it's call being "professional". See a therapist if you're going to bring your needy personal life into the hospital.

What was the point of hoking up Owen and Amelia if it's over already?

  5. OH dear friend, ive been absent. But ive decided to return on an awesome episode!

The opening scene was awesome and drew me in right away w/ the plain coming straight at Chief- how epic! Did not care for the moment between Meredith/AZ in the closet. I found myself wanting more from that scene from that moment. IDK it fell flat for me, i appreciated the attempt the execution not so much.

Stephanie- i enjoyed moments of her tonight, the scene btwn her telling off Owen and Amelia was hilarious- the scene btwn her and Joe talking about completely different things tickled me as well.

Meredith flashbacks w/ Derek was cool- Her moments w/ Callie, Bailey and Maggie I appreciated way more. I loved that we saw sparks of old Bailey. I need them to throw Maggie a bone before she inserts foot and mouth which we know she does so often. I loved the moment btwn her & Meredith, we can see their relationship growing and blossoming. Not necessarily as sisters but definitely as friends and equals and thats nice to see since Cristina is gone. Callie checking in on Meredith and not AZ irked me a little. But i understand why. Callie and Mer have a connection and friendship that has been explored more this season- so its understandable that Callie in her compassionate way would check in on Mer. I think we also see her check in on Mer b/c she feels as though she cant check in and be there for AZ. (Side note: where is the rule that says you cant be a friend to your ex?)

Chief and Kepner scene so cute- loved Chiefs epiphany

Owens epiphany and pretty much his demeanor and attitude all episode annoying as hell.

Calzona- last week was a cute moment btwn the two were AZ made mention of her leg yet again- and the fact that she wanted to maim Callie, and it was greeted w/ a chuckle by both= progress?

This episode, its evident Callie wants to be therefore AZ, in Alex suggesting it her body language says she doesnt want to engage or acknowledge what Alex is saying b/c she feels she isnt allowed to support her ex- idk y this rule exist- either way its in that moment I see maybe small movements to a possible reconciliation of some sort. AZ going off out on Alex all episode wasnt mad at it. Any time Alex can get yelled at is awesome and usually pretty funny. We come to the moment several seasons in the making Alex finally tells AZ he made the cut. If you recall during season 9 ep 4 Alex is concerned about AZ and feels guilty about his role in the crash -- on the flight he should have been on and as the doctor who performed the amputation. However, Callie has been covering for him and has taken on all the blame, she doesnt blame you, she doesn't even know you made the cut. I made the call. Your name never comes up. As viewers we are privy to this information- i assumed it would come up sooner or later, i did not realize it would be so much later. But hey it happened and i feel it will be used as a catalyst to bring Calzona to a new level in their relationship whatever it maybe. Maybe it will provide more clarity, understanding for both characters. I couldnt really read the moment btwn Calzona at the end. Gratitude, appreciation, relief, understanding, contempt????? maybe a bit of all of the above- but i did see possible Hope.

IDK if they will kill Derek- considering the blind item from a couple months ago was realized on Scandal thursday night. But whos to say more then one person couldnt die off shows in Shondaland

  6. @Brouhaha i knew we were friends for a reason i kinda want Maggie and Alex together too!! that look he gave her when she went on the date w/ the Radiology guy spoke volumes! Jo aint the one for him. Alex needs some sexual chocolate! lol

  7. Haha! Sexual chocolate! I love it. I loved it when he mentioned her lisp. Oh please let this happen!

  8. I try to stay away from spoilers. I think PD is going and as MERDER are end game the only way to exit him is death. But I could be wrong. I usually am in fact :)

  9. Never pass up the chance to quote an American classic "Coming to America" Eddie Murphy!!! lol

  10. Are they really end game? wasnt it more her and Cristina was end game- they let her leave and live.

  11. End game IMHO. I cannot see Shonda splitting them. Just can't see it.

  12. Remember the surge? Am I the only one who witnessed a loved one go through it?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Me too. Well, I wasn't exactly there when it happened, but it happened to a close relative of mine just before he died.

  14. They should kill off Jo who is the worst and Jackson (but they won't kill him because of the Japril fandom)

  15. Alex needs a beautiful blonde girl who needs to return ASAP! But if that doesn't happen I would love an Alex/Maggie pairing

  16. Oh God no. No Izzie please. No Izzie. She's toxic for him.

  17. If PD is leaving then Derek is toast.

  18. Jo is toxic for him,Izzie is perfect for him

  19. It was indeed a great episode. I still think that Derek won't die, and all these foreshadowings are just red herrings. I mean, I don't see them killing off a major character in an episode that is not a Season Finale/Season Premiere (all the deaths in the show happened in a finale or a premiere). So I think Derek won't die (at least not next week). With the amount of disasters this season (earthquake, plane crash), I think the season finale will be catastrophe-free this time, but probably it will be an emotional roller coaster. Judging by the synopsis of 11.23, I'm suspecting a possible wedding in the finale.

  20. Izzie dumped all over him several times, including at the end. Jo is just a waste of GSM air.

    ReplyDelete
  21. It all boils down to whether or not PD has jumped ship. It feels like these breaks he's had in filming are a response to him saying to producers "I'm out" and the producers saying "just hang in there til season end".
If PD is leaving then Derek will die. There is no alternative. They are not going to split them up and have them divorce. The way to keep the MerDer faith with one leaving and not the other is for death to separate them.
If PD is staying then I've no idea what they are doing at the moment with his character.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Izzie dumped him just because Shonda doesn't know how to write a good send off to a fan favorite when the actress just doesn't want to be in her show

    ReplyDelete
  23. Congrats for that review, it is really well said. And you've scared me even more than I was before. I hope you are wrong, seriously.

  24. Why is Jo toxic? What's with all the Jo hate on here?

    ReplyDelete
  25. That scene where Callie tells Arizona why she let her believe she amputated her leg all this time was gripping - Callie really is a saint for dealing with Arizona this whole time, and all to protect her. I also really loved the song they chose for that scene, "Parallel Lines" by Future Reference and Aron Wright - this show introduced me to Aron Wright earlier this season and I'm so glad it did. Even after all these years Grey's continues to be one of my top sources for discovering new music
