Grey's Anatomy - How To Save A Life - Review

25 Apr 2015

I’m in a state of shock...but not, as you might expect, because Derek is dead. I am astounded at the crap way that Shondaland has exited one of it’s most pivotal Grey’s Anatomy characters.

With very little build up to what transpired to be one of the most momentous episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, not in the current season but in the entire eleven year history one might be forgiven for thinking that not being a season finale, 11.21, How To Save A Life would turn out to be just a horrible Meredith dream. Divorced from the usual ensemble episode format the viewer was taken on Derek’s final heroic journey alone, away from the hospital, his wife and separated from the entire cast in a piece of television which was not only tragic in outcome but unfortunately tragic in execution.

It’s difficult to write a truly dispassionate review. This is SpoilerTV, a fansite for fans and by fans. I’ve loved Grey’s since it first aired and despite some moments of drifting in and out (largely associated with a George/Izzie relationship when I lost the will to watch) I have moved through the years and cast changes with optimism and excitement. So when one of the main original characters is suddenly ripped out from under me it’s impossible to evaluate the episode objectively. But I’m going to try. I’ve no axe to grind. This season the show has been so well written and directed that Patrick Dempsey’s absence has been a periphery concern only. There’s life in this show yet.

Derek Shepherd is dead. When an actor leaves a show for reasons other than creative, whether out of contract or not, the writers have little choice but to write the exit through a character led storyline. The story cannot be organic or plot driven. The best the writers can do is to be true to both the departing and the connected characters. In this case those latter would be Meredith and Amelia. The exit needs to fit within the dynamics of those relationships and with the prevailing storylines. It feels like Patrick Dempsey’s exit was unexpected and possibly unplanned (if indeed it was his decision and not the producers). We can speculate and gossip about rumours and reasons but in the end all that is irrelevant. The writers had to deliver it.

Was killing him off the way to go?
Yes. Absolutely.

Meredith and Derek’s relationship was and will always be a structural dynamic of the show, a foundation pillar for the key protagonist. Separating them permanently through divorce would only work for Meredith if both characters remain on the show thus the writers would be able to explore that new element of their liaison. However I’ve always believed that Meredith and Derek were end game; destined to be together forever. Not in a “I ship MerDer” way but reading interview after interview of Shonda explaining this couple. For an actor to leave within that context the character must come to a tragic yet deeply romantic end. Unpalatable as it may be, being true to this relationship means ending on a high. Even if that high is cut by death. A parallel story can be found in Mark’s death. While arguably the writers did not have to kill off George or Lexie, they had no option but to kill off Mark. Having worked so hard at evolving this character to be a stand up guy, loyal to Callie, giving him the family he so craved the last thing they would do is have him abandon them by moving away from Seattle. Alive he would have to remain in Sofia’s life, dead he can continue to be the great man he was. And so it is with Derek. No one wants it but it was a good decision. And the fall out of this tragic separation will continue to be that structural dynamic, for Meredith but also now for Amelia.

The episode unraveled in the writing and execution. To put it bluntly episode 11.21 was frustrating, awkward and labored viewing. It was unoriginal – he died saving lives, remember George and the bus; he died trying to reach his phone in his car, remember Callie; he died by being switched off, remember Mark?

The first third was bearable. Watching Derek go to work saving the lives of the crash victims reminded us of what the show is all about – human relationships and medical drama. His dreamy eyes and far away softly spoken aura melted us to a pool of nervous excitement (hmmm did I really just write that?). The anonymous supporting cast became irrelevant as we were lost in ferry boats and first kisses and “it’s a beautiful day to save lives”. But I missed the familiar supporting cast.

From the moment his car was hit by the truck, in particular the medical panic over Derek’s injuries, the episode was farcical inexplicable nonsense. Was it designed to be deeply ironic – Derek dying of an injury we know he would’ve been able to treat blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back? At this point I was angry at the television screen. Not because Derek was clearly dying but because I did not want to watch a bunch of shallow and entirely forgettable characters at this most important moment. I wanted to watch the cast. Or was it supposed to make us angry, as if we weren’t angry enough that Derek was dying? Perhaps the point was for these characters to fade into the distance so our focus was entirely on Derek? But there was no dialogue, no interaction with OUR characters, those that are important to us. Where was the rest of the cast? His story is narrated to us in monologue – narration being a very lazy form of story telling.

As if all of that wasn’t enough to have us punching our sofa cushions Meredith shows up in the final third of the episode and again only has dialogue with those aforementioned irrelevant characters. And why should we care that one doctor feels guilty about what’s happened? Meredith bitterly coaching a junior doctor was out of place and frustrating television, a poor use of vital screen time. And it was a waste of a storyline. Imagine how powerful it could’ve been if that story was redirected for Jo or Stephanie. Recovering from the guilt of being responsible for Derek’s death would’ve provided a wonderfully rich story arc to a junior GSM doctor, in much more significant way than Shane’s story was with Heather.

Shonda Rhimes decided to pen this episode herself. This was the wrong decision. So far this season has been written exceptionally well, especially for a show in it’s eleventh season. The writing set up and rotation was working well. Shonda’s decision to step into the writer’s seat for this episode after such a long absence, no matter how romantically or strategically intentioned was ill-advised. Stacey McKee who is far more experienced in Grey’s world to write unusual or special episodes (as I discuss here) should’ve written this episode.

There was good stuff though. Despite being on her own in a strange place, without the rest of the cast, the writing of Meredith was completely on point. She was clinical, as we would expect her to be. The flashbacks were poignant and well placed. Her heartbreak was pushed down as far as it could go, very in character. Derek was the McDreamy we love, he was heroic, he was romantic. Yes he was all the things that we love about Derek, in abundance. And in the final scene, with the signature music of a Grey’s tragedy we watched one of television’s most famous couples get their forever ending, no matter how painful to the audience.

How To Save A Life, 11.21 was heartbreaking, tragic and scary. Scary because it signals a very uncertain and different future not only for Meredith’s life but also for the show’s life. However it was also an arrogant, unoriginal, self-indulgent episode which contrasted so sharply with the loving and well crafted departure of Mark, or by Lexie’s tragic ‘meant to be’. The smell of off screen shenanigans weighed heavily on the episode. The presence of so many inconsequential and uninteresting characters was continually in danger of swamping the dreaminess of Derek and the monologue narration style dulled what was supposed to be very high drama. I ended the episode feeling suspicious at the obvious lack of interaction between Derek and the other series regulars.

Derek Shepherd has passed on. I shall miss him, especially his hair.

  1. I'm still pissed Meredith didn't call Amelia so she could say her goodbyes to Derek. And then someone else brought up the point earlier that she could have called all the Shepherds and got them there to see him one final time before pulling the plug.

God, I've watched for so many years and I'm going to keep watching but how much more does poor Meredith have to go through? And I'm still convinced she's going to find out she's pregnant again after this because why else bring up another baby the episode before?

  2. I'm confused by the arguement that the only way to do it was kill him off -- it's really not that hard to write a character out. He was working in DC, off-screen moments mentioned here and there in episodes. Couples sometimes have to live apart when their careers pull separate ways or heck, military families do it all the time. It's not unheard of for spouses to live in opposite places from time to time and for what is left of Grey's it certainly wouldn't have been that difficult to sell it.

  3. Yes poor writing! Derek drives a Porshe. He was on hands free talking to the operating room but he gets hit looking for his cell phone. Why??? He can answer by pushing a button on the steering wheel. It's 2015 it's called Bluetooth and he WAS just using it!!!!! Yes. I know it's just a tv show but shonda can do better for that on a character that made the show what it is.

Ugh and then he goes to a crap hospital with untrained docs. And the touching moment is with a stranger....no character of the enormous cast.

I guess Porsche's have terrible airbags. And we shouldn't take shortcuts to get to the airport.

This ep really made me think about how crappy random hospitals are!

  4. I get that Meredith shuts down or disappears or whatever she calls it when things go to pot, but Derek was more than her husband and her kids' father- How callous and thoughtless to not call Amelia, or even his mom! The woman's only son is dead, FGS! There is a limit to how dysfunctional you can be, especially since she's got to be over forty! To me, that was the sloppiest part- She knew Derek's family mattered to him, and still! I agree, if PD wanted to leave, there was no other way out- Derek was not the type to abandon his kids. But they could have done for Derek what they did for Mark- Give the people he worked with, and his family a chance to say goodbye. What was the tearing hurry?!

  5. If the fact that Meredith didn't call Amelia (or have a nurse call her or something) does not become a point of contention in the next episode, then there really is zero believability in this show and the characters. Amelia deserves to rage at Meredith for not having let her know until after the fact. For not having given her the chance to say goodbye to the biggest most influential male figure in her life and the only otherperson who knew what it was like to have their father killed in front of them. As his sister and especially with the bond they really solidified when Derek returned to Seattle, that was Amelia's right. And that would have been a really great scene to see. That would have added some richness to the story.

  6. Great review!
Only some questions-Was it to hard/difficult to bring Derek to Grey Sloan Hospital? Why didn't Meredith call his Family/Amelia/Anyone for that matter.A world famous neurosurgeon died due to brain bleed? How ironic!
Derek talking as a 3rd person was creepy, disturbing & tragic. On top of it,looks like Meredith will be pregnant soon with Mcdreamy's child(definitely a son this time)-How cruel can Shonda be?
Anyway, what's done is done. After all these 11 years,it's my time to say goodbye from this show for good. This last couple of episodes will be hard for me to watch!

  7. Fantastic Review Maxine!

The episode was awful. I liked Derek so I'm sad that he died, but I could have lived with him dying surrounded by friends and loved ones, but instead he dies in a random hospital with Meredith there right at the end. That itself was an insult to the character, he deserved a much better send of than what he got, especially since he's the male lead. I too didn't care about these random doctors or their feelings, I only cared about Derek.

Some things I found wrong with it: (Some are the same as you)
    - Why would someone stop in the middle of the road to pull out his phone?
    - How was his phone ringing when we got told earlier there was no reception in the are?
    - Why didn't Meredith Phone anyone, literally anyone?
    - If a doctor is on call for trauma why did it take him 1hr and 30 to get to the hospital, that itself was just plain dumb.
    - Why was Meredith comforting the doctor who failed to save her husband's life?
    - The cruel irony of Derek dying from a brain bleed.
    - The cruel Shonda Rhimes showing us that if attended to properly he could have lived.

Shonda should not write a single episode of Grey's Anatomy again. This was a special episode, meant to be honoring the character that is Derek Shephed, but instead we spend half of it with unknown people. The only thing good I can take away from it was Ellen's performance in the last 4 minutes, and maybe the car crash which I quite liked.

  8. Well until the last second, I didn't think Shonda would do it, but in the last couple of episodes, I got the feeling that they had to rewrite some of the SL for PD's exit.
So this might not be the best Episode Shonda ever wrote. But I thought that Patrick and Ellen were brilliant. Something I missed for a long time, maybe they need this challanges... you feel like both of them got to comfortable with those characters and lazy. And although I thought that Merder became a quite boring couple in the last three Seasons, I was more then shocked after this episode. I'm thrilled for the next 2h episode and how the characters deal with this huge loss. Cristina was one of my favorite characters and I was sad that Sandra left the show, but I get the feeling that Grey's needs some fresh air, some fresh characters.
So I'm excited and I'm sad, at the same time.

  9. I recently lost my father. He was very sick for a long time and when the time came to say goodbye, I went blank. As my sister came to pick me up to go to our father, we got a call that he passed away. I cried a little but went numb during the drive. When there, I couldn't say anything or make decisions. I just cried. So everyone might act different at the moment. I applaud Meredith that she could do make a decision. I couldn't, even if you asked me. I would have asked for a day or two.

I guess this shows that no actor, no character, no matter how important they or the viewers think they are: are not immune to walking into the proverbial open elevator shaft.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He'd been gone most of the season so I figured he was probably doing
other stuff and wanted out. Shonda loves to go for shock value now and
to get people talking and she usually kills someone off every year so I
thought it would be Derek. She does the same on Scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Totally agree, what a selfish thing to do..

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yes there are lots of ways they could've exited the character but ultimately this is a drama show and it has to move forward with story constantly. Derek going off to work somewhere else happy in his marriage but never returning to his wife cuts off major dramatic avenue. They would never be able to show Meredith in a relationship. That's never going to work. Hence they had to kill him. This way even if she never has another relationship they can at least develop the grief storyline fully.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It was all very unimaginative.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It could be that the fact she didn't call will be a major story arc for Meredith and Amelia. I would LOVE to see Mrs Shepherd back. Love that character.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Agree and I think if they make it happen it will be a great storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you.
I really did not like Derek narrating his own death. Honestly I saw it as the writers showing the finger to the character.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes she could've done that but at the end of the day it's about drama and this, assuming that the writers take advantage of the fact she didn't call, will provide a dramatic rift between Meredith and Amelia.
    Or they'll just ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would have loved for the thing you said with Jo and Stephanie instead of the random doctor - they really need more meaty storylines and if they had to live with the guilt over Derek's death, it would be so great to watch.

But I think, first and foremost, this show is about Meredith. Or at least it's Meredith's story. I think if they took Derek to Seattle Grace, it would become less about Meredith and more about everyone else too. So to have her and Derek at another hospital isolated them and put the focus solely on those 2 as their love story came to a close. I think that's important. It also means Meredith will now have to tell everyone that Derek is dead, including Amelia, which will be dramatic to watch so it opens many possibilities in the last few episodes of season 11.

I didn't hate the episode. I hated the doctors in the other hospital (not the female doctor who said from the beginning they should get Derek as CT) and that stupid neurosurgeon should NOT have taken one and a half hours to get there! He was shouting at them for not getting the CT sooner but he should have been in that operating room as soon as he was called, not an hour and a half later. I want so badly for that hospital to blow up with him inside.

The scenes with Meredith were beautiful. I could feel her pain and her need to be strong in those moments. It was very true to her character and Ellen hasn't been able to act like that in quite some time, so I loved her scenes. I'm not entirely happy with how Derek was killed off but I'm kind of used to him not being there now anyway, but it's still going to be weird without him, and Meredith will be forever changed now.

It reminds me of the Susan Mayer / Mike Delfino love story of Desperate Housewives. They fight for each other for 8 years only to end up with one of them dead and the other alone. Deja vu.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I simply couldn't watch it and I'm never going to. Shonda has thrown eleven years out of the window. There's no getting past this and I'm confident enough to say, she has killed her own show. One season maybe and then they will pull the plug 'cause the ratings suck. It was a good show. It's a pity they couldn't keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I also think nothing justifies not calling them but I think Meredith was trying to rush things? I may be too analytical (I am an intensive care doctor, so I can see myself in her shoes) I think she was just trying to give the hospital a free bed in the ICU and sort of "get it over with". I have no empathy for Meredith but I think shes been through so much crap already thay her eay of dealing with stuff is the "rip off the band ai" kind of way.

Again, I am not saying I agree. I am just saying i understand. But if it were my husband and my sister in law was less than an hour away, I would definitely call her in Meredith's situation

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would plus one that many times if I could. Your analysis is very thorough and a highly enjoyable read. I agreed with most and it highlighted quite a few connections i hadnt made. I'm going to disagree with you on a couple of points however - maybe you'd be disappointed if I didn't?

"Your premise was that the separation was unavoidable" - I made no such premise. My analysis focusses on how they removed him and not why. My premise is merely that a decision was made for Patrick Dempsey to leave and his reasons for leaving are irrelevant, or at least should be irrelevant to how the writers chose to implement his character's departure. Someone made that decision. Either he did and asked to be released from his contract or the producers decided that for whatever reason he needed to go, and go quickly without fuss. The biggest issue I have is that the manner in which his character departed stinks of something going on. It is incumbent on the writers to exit the character showing respect to viewers who ultimately provide the reason for the advertising. I base this on no knowledge whatsoever of the reasons for Dempsey's departure - there is something not quite right about the episode 11.21.

However what I think WAS unavoidable was killing Derek Shepherd rather than have him permanently employed out of state, never to set foot in seattle or GSM.

"Next comes your contention that Rhymes wrote a subpar script for such an event as this." - your analysis is really accurate and it all made sense. I can see that Rhimes' follow through of symbols and signs shows a consistency and almost natural flow. I evaluated the episode not the over arching story arc. The episode was poorly written IMO because it was devoid of cast, therefore filled with characters we don't care about (and possibly this was to enhance our feelings for Derek but in my case it merely irritated me), there was far too much narration and monologue. I concede after reading your thoughtful post that what Rhimes was trying to get across was indeed something much deeper. But if it needs to be explained then it's not working.

The other point I would make is that I don't agree that Grey's jumped the shark as early as you say. If it had it would simply not have carried on for a further 6 seasons with the size of audience it has. Granted this audience is much lower in number but the fact that it still dominates ratings is testament to the fact that however the show has evolved (and I agree with you that it has evolved probably differently than intended) the viewer has still been very engaged and thus the show still relevant rather than desperate.

When Season 11 started my feeling is that Shonda Rhimes had no idea that she would be killing Derek BEFORE season finale. My guess is that it has really screwed with part two of the season. However I dont think his death will be anything but excellent story fodder to further dramatise the carousel.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks Robert. I contrast it with the care and attention Rhimes gave to exiting Mark. She even interviewed about it after the fact and debated how conflicted she was on how to remove "her" Mark Sloan. Mark even had an epitaph at the end of the episode. If you read C Spottswood's comments above there is some useful context which does explain how the episode could be explained with respect to the bigger picture.

  24. Agree with you that Patrick and Ellen did great jobs. I enjoyed watching them both. I also agree with you that the show has a freshness about it which I'm excited about.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Indeed. No one is bigger than the show....maybe....

    ReplyDelete
  26. I liked Derek, not as much as other characters but I liked him. Not sure that I'll miss him though. I felt he left ages ago. But maybe that was the point.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I too am used to him not being there already... but as I said in response to someone else, perhaps that was the point.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Difficult to know if this is Shonda's doing. Yes she wrote the episode, planned the story. But if PD wanted to go then she had no choice but to write him dead. If PD was fired...then maybe she has thrown it out the window.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Because the actress who played Lexie wanted to leave she decided to kill her off, and decided that Mark was collateral damage. It was very unfair to him, although I liked his send off more than Derek's.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Could they have just made Derek disappear, presumed dead? He could have been in a plane crash or some other kind of accident with practically no chance of survival, but body never found. Meredith could have presumed he was dead and we still get the same reaction as him actually dying, but it could have kept the possibility of Derek coming back in the future (amnesia or something?). It's a bit soap opera-ish, but I think it could have worked.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The very fact that it would make a great storyline probably means shonda and co won't go there. It will probably just be brushed aside. Sigh. So much could come out of that too. Caterina Scorsone has such range and would play it so well.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had to go somewhere and provide my ill-fundamented opinion on this tragic news. I just found out that McDreamy died and was shocked, confused and disappointed. Here's the thing, I haven't watched "Grey's Anatomy" in many years, I have no idea how good the show is these days because I simply don't tune in, so I don't wanna complain about it, about the creative decisions it makes, because I'm not really in on them, and I don't wanna be like those people spewing off that the Bible says this or that is wrong whe they haven't even read the Bible. But it seems to me that GA keeps making bad decision after bad decision after bad decision, doesn't it? I binge-watched every single episode of the first 6 seasons a few years back and absolutely loved the show, but after the season 6 finale I decided to call it quits. Might seem like an odd time for you, but that finale was SO good (virtually flawless, just absolutely breathtaking), and I realized there wasn't much for me going forward: the stakes had been raised higher than they ever could again (even though no major characters actually perished in that episode), Izzie was gone to probably never come back (she gets a lot of crap from the fandom it seems, probably for Heigl's attitude, but I rather liked Izzie), and I was concerned that the show would just drag from there on out. I really think GA should have ended years ago. That's just the impression that I get because, whereas I don't watch the show, I have seen a few episodes or moments here and there through the years or read about its major happenings on the internet. I saw the musical episode - which was pretty bad. I saw Lexi's death and it angered me - I mean, it really, really angered me. It just made no sense to me whatsoever. I understand that Chyler Leigh wanted to pursue other projects, but the idea to kill her off was a dumbfuckery to me. Lexi was young, the character herself could have pursued other projects in-series, moved to work at a different hospital, leaving the door open for the occasional guest appearance here and there. Killing her off was too much, especially when Kim Raver's dull character exited the series in the exact same episode. They could have killed off Teddy in that fashion and made Lexi leave, not the other way around. I won't complain about Mark's death, I didn't actually get to see it, he had a good run and Eric Dane never did much for me acting-wise. I just hate that it happened in a season premiere. The cast kept being shaken up to the point that whenever I would read up on the show online I would have no idea who the hell they were talking about (Tina Majorino? Tessa Ferrer? What?). I suppose they want to make this show the new ER (I never saw it but I hear it went on for like 15 years), to the point that, come hell or high heaven, this show will limp its way to the barn - wasn't Ellen Pompeo herself rumored to leave eons ago? They lost Cristina last year. Now they kill off McDreamy, four episodes before the finale of a season, in what appears to be an unoriginal, self-contained episode. I can't cope with that. What does this show have going for it now? Dr. Webber?! OMG why is he still there?! Why?! That character felt like he had run its course by the time season THREE ended, it's season ELEVEN now and he's still there? Doing WHAT?! I'm sorry for the rant. I just honestly believe - again, without knowing much - that GA should have finished years ago, ended with some dignity, as opposed to this. Shows need to know when to stop, especially the successful ones. Please don't hate me for complaining about the show without watching it properly or giving it another try, think of it as this: from what I hear, the show is doing nothing to make me wanna give it another try. And sorry for the long rant.

  33. I'm most intrigued about what this means for Meredith and what they will do with her now. "I can live without you but I don't want to" comes to my mind. I wonder how long it will take until she's inevitably paired up with a new guy and we all know it's gonna happen eventually.

I don't even wanna get into how or why he died. Derek is dead. Let's just leave it at that.

  34. This was the last episode of Grey's I will watch. I've been the biggest fan for over eleven years, but I'm completely done after this episode. Done. I always defended it, and up til last week I would still have, but if the makers of this show had any respect for the fans they would have be honest about Patrick leaving before if they knew they wanted to make an episode as crushing as this, or write an episode with more respect for the character. Done. Completely.

  35. I see I'm not the only one feeling this way. I just watched the episode, not knowing what was going to happen, and I totally understand you don't want to see it.

  36. I found myself screaming at the tv TAKE HIM HOME TO HIS HOSPITAL TO TO BE WITHHIS PEOPLE! when they wanted to term the ventilator off...they were in the wrong so it's the least they can do. I wanted as you said the proper cast with him! 😡 I have watched greys and never missed an episode, I have cried loads in the past but this was heartbreaking and made me do angry at the same time 😭

  39. Mark had a beautiful send off, including an epitaph. It only heightens suspicions that all was not well in Shondaland.

  40. It was, I don't mind a character death as long as it's done right with a satisfying end to the character.

Some fans have actually started a petition to bring back Derek, which is ridiculous. Although, it's gaining 1,000 signatures per 30mins. Currently standing at 37,000 in just under 2 days...

    ReplyDelete
  41. While I agree with your analysis I cannot agree with you that it was well written. Just because people are talking about something a lot doesn't mean it was well written. The episode had enormous shock factor so it makes sense, good writing or no, that it will be talked about.

I'm not angry at all that Shonda killed off Derek. It makes sense to me that it happened if a decision was taken for him to leave the show. The writing was, at times, cringeworthy.

As you will know from me writing about Jo Wilson, I hate it when the story is told to me rather than shown. I thought they could've done much better at showing us Derek's panic about what was happening. Clever editing and good facial acting from Derek would've told a more effective story.

I try really hard not to worry about the domestic inconsistencies...but as you bring them up let's deal with it. She didn't call anyone. One of the first things that police do when delivering such news is 'should we call someone?'. It is difficult to believe that the police did not or would not persuade a mother to leave her children with a trusted friend in such circumstances. We already know that the hospital creche is open 24/7...
But that's a small point to me so I'm not worried about it as others are.
It's also ridiculous to think that she didn't call Derek's mother...but maybe she did. Again I don't worry about that.

The point for me is that Shonda DIDN'T make me feel enough. It didn't affect me enough. Yes the last scene was good but the rest of the time I felt angry at being short changed with self indulgent dull writing. Yes it was dull. I don't agree that it's enough for us to "feel something" nor that they don't care what type of emotion. If Shonda is happy that I'm angry at the poor way she topped Derek then she's lost control of her writing. Meredith telling us she has a perfect life and Derek having his personal 'surge' moment in the last episode were unexpected and manufactured and left me with a sense of doom. Then to re-use all the old plot devices was unimaginative. I felt really let down.

But each to their own my friend :) Shonda wrote a great episode for you. For me, she should've handed over to someone who is more in touch with Season eleven writing.

  42. I'm guessing that the point was he would never come back.

  43. For someone who hasn't watched the show in years you sure are passionate. The show has done and is still doing phenomenally well. It still dominates the ratings in it's demographic. I think it's better if you watch the show and then comment because the reason it has lasted this long is because for many people it is relevant and enjoyable.
If you read the reviews I've written for season eleven you will see that IMHO the show has been exceptionally well written this season, barring this one episode.

  44. I'm looking forward to a very dark and twisty Meredith *she says rubbing her hands together in wicked glee*

  45. Oh come back. Don't let stop you from watching. It's still great. It's irrelevant why Patrick wanted to go or when the makers knew. It's done. but there's life in it yet.

  48. Either he or Bohkee the scrub nurse. I mean she has been around longer than most of the people on the board.

  49. I just don't feel like it anymore. Not at this moment. Maybe that will change in the future, but for now, I'm still done.

  50. I hope they address this- Or atleast have Amelia see several missed calls from Meredith or something. The big Mer-Der wedding that was supposed to be minus Derek's entire family was bad enough, but this one takes the super stale cake! The woman who had no trouble calling all the sisters so they can donate a nerve for Derek now cannot even call them to tell them that their only brother died? Cannot wait for a few hours to pull the plug? Cannot have him moved to a hospital she OWNS so she doesn't have to take a bed at a random hospital? I get that Meredith's always been about "My friends are my real family", but she knew Derek's family meant a lot to him!

  51. It was a very similar exit path to that of George, don't you think? Probably worse for George, because he was gone for so long, it didn't even occur to many that Dragged Under The Bus Guy was George!

  52. God, I hope not!! Meredith's kind of Dark and twisty with two young kids?!! What I'm really afraid of is that Meredith will turn into Ellis- I feel like they're writing her into that corner. Remember in Season 3, right before the Ferry Boat epic, Mer tells her mom she's happy and gets chewed out? Back then, that's what she wanted. Jump to last season, when she refuses to go to DC with Derek: Yes, Derek was being a selfish ass, backing out on his promise to take things easy so Mer could take her career further, but given the way things were, was there a concrete reason as to why Meredith could not have achieved in DC what she did at GSM? They show her streak, but no research. And now, with Derek gone, I'm afraid that Mer will turn into Ellis :(

  53. The difference is that they didn't have to kill George. He could've just gone to war. They killed him to remove any chance of the actor returning. With Derek he had to be killed in order for Merediths story to be credible.
