NBC is off to see the wizard—again.
The broadcaster is reviving its Wizard of Oz-themed drama series project Emerald City with a 10-episode straight to series order.
The series was originally conceived as a modern and dark reimagining of the classic L. Frank Baum Oz tale, only with a Game of Thrones-ian vibe from writers Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedman. NBC ordered the show early last year, and even promoted the title at Comic-Con (using the teaser poster seen above). Then NBC dumped the idea in August without having so much as cast its lead role.
Now Emerald City is back—and just a few weeks after the network ordered yet another Wizard of Oz project, a live version of the Broadway musical The Wiz. Perhaps Emerald City is seen as a cross-promotional opportunity?
This time, Emerald City is being reworked by writer David Schulner, who has had his hand in several NBC projects over the last several years (Dracula, Do No Harm, The Event, Kings).
Here’s the logline for the project:
In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and her K9 police dog are transported to another world, one far removed from our own—a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. ReplyDeleteSo this is NBC seventh series order for next season already. They already have Coach, Telenovela, Freedom Run, Decalogue, Heroes Reborn and Shades of Blue for the 2015-16 season.
Without Friedman I'm not expecting this to be worth my time.

ReplyDeleteFor some reason I keep mixing up the one-word NBC pilots for next season (Blindspot, Endgame, Manhunt etc).
The series order for that is script and cast contingent. Haven't heard anything about it after NBC first bought it.

ReplyDeleteWhat is the update on Chicafo Med? i guess it's a sure thing since it's a part of big franchise. Also the ratings were up significantly for Chicago Fire when they had that crossover.

ReplyDeleteThe script review for Warrior was completely trashed, so it wouldn't surprise me if NBC decided to not go ahead with it.
ReplyDeleteNBC is very interesting as I would be very surprised if Game Of Silence, Endgame, Blindspot, Chicago Med, and Curse Of The Fuentes Women is not picked up. So there's five new dramas already on schedule somewhere. Then they have all of the stuff that they already ordered.
They'll likely announce any Chicago Med pickup with the rest of the pilots, but all indications is that it's a very safe bet.

ReplyDeleteRobertson-if NBC keeps the show as a 10 episode per season show than I could see her maybe doing it but the timing seems off with the movies she has coming out she will probably be booked for a film.
Ross-never seen her before. Is she at least 18? Dont think they will cast an actress under 18 to play a 20 year old.
Rosman (7th Heaven?) only seen her on that show but she is not even 16, dont see her being cast either even if she can pull off playing 20 the network will want an actress who is 18 or older.

ReplyDeleteWell it's a limited series. I'm praying that Constantine will get one more chance, even if it's unlikely. If it did and got 13 episodes NBC could air that, Emerald City and Hannibal Fridays at 10 with Hannibal bleeding into the summer a bit.
