  4. I have just moved house and my internet setup failed, they're not activating it until Sunday night at the earliest, noooooooo! I was planning on Daredevil all day Sat. :( Ah well.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That sucks, the moral is the story is never move house!

  6. Can someone confirm for me, if I start a trial (can't justify signing up for netflix while between jobs/countries), I can watch the whole series? New to streaming services like netflix.

Oh wow. The opening title card sequence is glorious. I got Hannibal vibes from it.

  8. First thoughts:

  9. it's the first live-action superhero show to actually have opening credits since Smallville isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. I believe the Netflix trial is 7 days and you can watch unlimited content during that 7 days.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think so yeah. I did laugh about the Avengers tower attack thing lowering the prices on property

  12. Just finished the pilot and I'm already sold on everything just as I expected.

Let's start off with the action: I'm so glad Marvel went all in and wasn't holding anything back. The fight scenes were so epic in all it's bloody, bonecrushing glory. And I like that Matt isn't this perfectly trained fighter right off the bat and still has kinks he's got to work on. I have a feeling once Stick comes along, Matt will get even better :)

Charlie Cox: What isn't there to like about Charlie's Matt Murdock?! His charming as hell personality, coupled with that tragic scene about the moment he loses his vision right from the start of the episode makes you already emotionally attached to the character. Also, his friendship with Foggy is so great. Foggy was a little bit underused in the pilot (except for the part where we find out that he gives money to police for leads on cases) but they were just mainly setting up the Matt story which is fine by me. Can't wait to learn more about Foggy in the future.

The pilot did a great job of also setting up the Wilson Fisk/He Who Should Not Be Named plot for the season with his mission of rebuilding Hell's Kitchen through the process of blackmail, murder, etc. all while using these people with different affiliations to accomplish the goal. You do not want to mess with these people because they all look terrifying as hell and will do everything to make sure everything goes their way. And Deborah Ann Woll was perfectly cast as Karen. Her story is so crucial to the overall arc of the season and I can't wait to learn more about her. Yay to her being Matt and Foggy's secretary! Though I have a feeling there's a lot more to her than meets the eye.

    On to episode 2!

  13. aw you spoiled me a little LOL, Netflix isn't working for me right now on my laptop so i have to wait until tomorrow to see it but i saw a couple of minutes

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed, my eyes were glued to the screen when the opening credits came on. A beautiful experience. Painting Hell's Kitchen in red. And I too was getting Hannibal vibes from it as well!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Since I don't really have a feel for the characters yet (problem in an of itself after 2 episodes), I can only really talk about the action. Right now, I'm disappointed in the fights and the overall production value--except the title sequence that is AWESOME. The sound guys are off on their timing and while the choreography is very dynamic, the punches aren't landing. Cox hitting the heavy bag actually looked better than some his stunt guy's fights. And as of yet, I'm not fond of the speed changes to make it look more interesting.

I like Charlie Cox and he is playing intelligent well, but I'm not convinced he has this "devil" inside him and he is a closet BAMF. Is he supposed to be? Or his Daredevil like Spiderman?

I'll be back after a few more episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The trial is 30 days and its very easy to cancel, I did it when Arrested Development S4 aired.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks for the confirmation, but turns out it doesn't matter, didn't realise netflix isn't in Spain

    ReplyDelete
  18. lol, Im in Aus but I use VPN to get American Netflix not Aus Nutflix. American one is just so much better in terms of content.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I have to disagree. The fight scenes have been pretty brutal, I have seen one or 2 pull punches but generally its pretty good. Much better than say something like Agents of Shield.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Time to move to America? :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Beware of the DC fanboy brigade they will be out in full force.

But 3 episodes in and it is hands down the best comic book show of all time

    ReplyDelete
  22. Guys, episode 2!!! My heart is still racing. The flashbacks to young Matt and his father, Jack, introduction of Claire Temple, Matt torturing that Russian guy in the bloodiest way possible, THAT hallway fight sequence at the end! MY GOD, Matt taking every punch and still managed to take all of those guys down. His determination is incredible. "I need you to know why I'm hurting you. It's not just the boy. I'm doing this 'cause I enjoy it." Chills all over my spine.

    ReplyDelete
  23. None. But sh*t other hand been dropping that a decent amount

    ReplyDelete
  24. You can try the Chrome extension Hola! This will show Netflix that the IP address of the incoming traffic is from any country you define. I think Firefox has an extension like Hola! as well.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Between the sound being off (and how heavily they are relying on the sound) and the straight-arm, off-balance punches and the lots of flare but no speed or force kicks, I'm pretty over the fights. Brutal repercussions don't make up for lackluster punches for me.

Maybe I had too high of expectations, I was hoping for Strikeback or Vikings or even Banshee, I mean in an ideal world Human Target, but I got slightly worse than Arrow season 1 or AOS.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I only found the first episode online so far, so going to watch that soon.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 4.5 episodes in and i love it

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agreed.
About the quality, not the fanboys! XD

    ReplyDelete
  29. Only a few episodes in and DareDevil is easily my favorite comic book based series... Including movies. It does not have the budget of most films, but I could not feel that very often. Thankfully it did not have those overpowering epic hero score trying to hide lackluster elements...It felt grounded and real... not forced or a test of my suspension of disbelief like other hero series seems to be..

Some of the fight scenes did sound a bit "off"... Some punches sounded wrong and others sounded a bit out of sync, but it only slightly distracted from the fight scenes which I still enjoyed a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ha, yes, lesson learned! :P Well this time i bought, so i hope to stay here for a good while now. :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm pretty sure the end of episode 4 has the most violent scene that's ever been in any Marvel project yet, at least so far, like I said I'm only on episode 4 so who knows with this show, al I know is that I'm loving it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Today is really dragging as well just to make the wait feel longer.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Same here, but seems everyone is hitting 91.5% and then the download speed drops to less than 1KB/s since almost no one has managed to get the full episode to seed yet.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I don't use torrents but download it from various online players people have uploaded it to.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've only seen Episode 1 so far, but I thought that was great. Possibly my favorite Netflix original already. I plan to watch more later.

    ReplyDelete
  36. That sucks. Looks like they're launching it in Spain in the next few months though, hopefully you can join Netflix then! It's worth it, I think. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am loving it so far. I really was not sure about Charlie Cox, but he's proving me wrong. I love the style of it. It's probably going to be my favorite comic show period. Of DC/Marvel or TWD. Even Agent Carter. I love the darker tone.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i saw the first ep and i really liked it for many reasons. action and a good storyline always makes me appreciate things

    ReplyDelete
  39. DD is possibly the best comic book adaption to live action and for me, certainly the best thing on Netflix currently. It captures the essence of the print Daredevil comic book pages beautifully. Cox makes a great lead. Marvel has created another comic book series that feels like it is written by and for adults. Maybe I'll retain my Netflix subscription after all. If the other Marvel projects for Netflix are even half as good as DD, then I'm all in.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Jesus, episode 10 is soul-crushing. Nothing specific but damn.

I love this show so much I am honestly bummed out while watching it. The idea that a second season may not be possible until post-Defenders is killing me..

    ReplyDelete
  41. Episode 1 reactions:

+ I adore Foggy, he brings the humor
+ Linked in with this the emerging Foggy, Matt and Karen friendship is perfect. Can't wait to see more of them
+ Damn Hells Kitchen is messed up, always will be assholes taking advantage of destruction
+ Charlie Cox is doing a great job so far
+ This show really makes me pay attention to the use of sound.
+ I laughed at the bad guys assembling on the roof scene, the Chinese gangster lady was great, the dickhead dude thinking the Japanese guy would understand her ha ha

    ReplyDelete
  42. The fight scenes were so epic in all it's bloody, bonecrushing glory

I love the subtitles for the fight scenes lots of [Bonescrushing] and [Groans]!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Just saw first episode. It was so good. Dark, gritty.. A sense of danger through out the episode. Anticipation for the villain is too good. The action is great. You can feel the guy can't see and he is relying on sound. Background score and music is top notch. Charlie Cox brings great intesnsity to the character. Great first episode. Now running away to watch the second one.

    ReplyDelete
  44. How is it compare to Arrow? I know there is a marvel vs DC war out there somewhere and arrow vs daredevil war too

    ReplyDelete
  45. It would be really unfair to compare both shows. Mainly because of the budget. Its very clear the budget of Daredevil is really great.

They are able to translate the NewYork Hells Kitchen very beautifully. The show in one episode was able to tell us why Hell's kitchen is such a bad place where as Arrow after 3 seasons still has not properly shown us why Glades are so bad.

While Arrow is fast in its action scenes Daredevil has taken time with slow motion sequences and pauses to make us feel each punch. Different approach but both works very well for me.

Another positive of Daredevil over Arrow is it is able to make even the smallest of the character and thug really interesting. There are some crime bosses introduced in this episode who are really fun.

Music and background score are on par for both shows imo.

Daredevil has a cinematic feel to it which Arrow with its modest budget will never get. It has an advantage. Once again not fair at all to compare.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Id call it darker than arrow by far. Sure, arrow killed people quite often in S1. But the tone was never really that dark about it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Finally finished all 13 episodes and i loved it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well I going to guess daredevil has little to no romance or fan service because they all come out at once....while arrow they do listen to the fans and demand Olicity to happen.....

    ReplyDelete
  49. The hero does flirt. And there is a connection and looks between him and the lead female. But his journey is no way linked to his romantic feelings at least in the first episode. That was Arrow's main fault in season 1 and 3.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Agreed. Daredevil is literally shrouded in darkness. There are no family moments to cut the darkness like in Arrow. I have only finished first episode. I need to get out of this thread and not spoil myself lol.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well daredevil is on Netflix and for adult audience arrow on the CW which means romance because of the younger audience and there is nothing we can do about it!. I wouldn't want romance to be link to a journey to become a hero. That would be awful......oh well like you said big budget and on netflix and there is probably little restriction.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Why are the Marvel fanboys always trying to start fights? Why they are always so concerned about what DC doing?
I haven't watched the show yet but here I haven't seen anyone bash this show just because is Marvel and they prefer DC. That's what Marvel fanboys usually do with everything DC sometimes without even watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Historical_Materialist10 April 2015 at 21:09

Batman and Superman are my favorite comic characters. On the DC vs Marvel debate I have always leaned towards DC.

But Daredevil?.......THIS is how you make a comic book TV show. It's just about perfect.

It makes Arrow look like a bad daytime soap.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Here I go!! Starting Episode 1 now.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Historical_Materialist10 April 2015 at 21:26

There's a good deal of flirting and innuendo. The difference is that Daredevil is doing it right. Its letting the story tell itself. Pandering and fan service are for hacks and bad writers.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So good. So so good. There goes my good night's sleep tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Historical_Materialist10 April 2015 at 21:35

"You embarrassed me in front of her".....damn that is some Banshee level violence.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The biggest difference I see so far is that Arrow looks like it's made for TV. Daredevil looks like it was made for the movies. It's most definitely better than the BA movie.
It's darker and it's more centered. There are no moments that are meant to be cute and quirky but come across as fan service and awkward.
I don't think the budget has anything to do with it either as opposed to some comments I've read. Arrow has the best stunt team in the business and their CGI is amazing. Daredevil just looks more mature.
SN- I'm a fan of Arrow (minus the shipping aspects) and I love Daredevil. DD just does it better, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  59. There was actually a good deal of romance in Daredevil. It just didn't suck ass.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I agree with your entire post but for the budget part. Arrow makes their budget work. They have the best stunt and CGI team in the TV industry. I've often wondered how they get it so right when most other networks get it so wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Episode 2

That was brutal. The flashback scenes of young Matt and his dad broke my heart. It was so sad. Loved Claire Temple and her scenes with Matt. My God that last hallway action scene with the russians. So gritty and brutal. He punched and he got punched. It was so good. The torture scene was really gnarly.

Karen and Foggy's side trip was fine. But whenever their scenes came I was like show me Matt. I want to see what he is doing.

Another great installment. Really loving it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I agree with you about the cute quirky moments not being there on Daredevil. But Arrow is not a network tv with 23 episodes per season. The huge amount of episodes is the main reason for fan servicey and filler character moments. Daredevil has only 13 episodes and no network restrictions.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Finished the whole thing. Random thoughts:

    - The team felt like a TEAM. With most superhero shows I'd be sad if a team member died but I would never wonder if the team would be able to go on after that. Daredevil really highlighted how important the dynamic is between the characters. Not just for superhero action but in their day-to-day lives. These people need each other.

    - Fisk is the best villain in a comicbook property so far. The time they took to develop him and the portrayal of the character was brilliant. While I never agreed with what he was doing I understood why he was doing it and why it was so important to him.

    - There was a ton of romance in this and it didn't suck. I always roll my eyes when people complain about romance in superhero shows. Comics are packed full of romance stories. Thus far the majority of them have just been executed poorly onscreen.

    - The action. My god the action. It was superb. Very gory but it didn't veer into Tarantino territory. I would still give the edge to Banshee in best TV fight choreography though.

    - Contrary to a certain reviewer I thought the pacing was great. I never felt like there was no urgent reason to watch the next episode. The threat the characters were under felt immense and they expertly built and rewarded tension.

    - Charlie Cox really nailed this role. Not just as Daredevil but as Matt Murdock. I loved his subtle mannerisms when around people who didn't know about his abilities.
The whole cast really delivered in this.

    - THE suit. You know the one. Loved it so much. Perfect for street-level with room for improvement.

I'm sure there is so much more I want to mention that isn't coming to me right now but I am trying to stay away from overt spoilers.

    ReplyDelete
  64. So true. That's the biggest difference I was trying to figure out. While it's more centered, it doesn't have time for filler. Thanks!
I love it so far, with a few episodes to go.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You can clearly see in Daredevil some shots of cinematic brilliance. There are some camera movements which were so good. Some roof top shots were very good. In Arrow even though they do best work with what they got after few episodes it feels like same warehouse and same roof top. Not their fault. Daredevil has an action movie feel to it which Arrow with its CW budget which is less than any other network can replicate.

    ReplyDelete
  66. After watching episode 2 I will say Daredevil compared to Arrow is lot more gritty and gnarly. Not being on network tv is great.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Which was a huge relief, even knowing where it's going, it's written so well, I won't mind. I don't want to spoil non-comic fans.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I only finished 2 episodes. Got to go and watch the balance.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I wish we had seperate threads to discuss each episodes or a cluster of episodes. I am scared of being spoiled.

    ReplyDelete
  70. True again. Arrow has always amazed me at how great it looks, on a CW budget. They don't get enough credit for that, I don't think.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Finished the first episode, it won me over pretty quickly, I loved everything about it. I must say I'm really impressed. Don't know if I'll watch the whole season tonight or watch it in parts over the weekend. Cool opening credits btw.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I was just thinking that when I relied to MM below. I've only got a few, I think I'll stay out of the thread until I'm done. It's hard though. You want to see how people respond to it.

    ReplyDelete
  73. That is why I am noting the episode no in the post I am writing. I do not want to spoil anyone. Its hard not to discuss with others about an episode immediately after watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  74. They would all the credit if they stop with the gratuitous shirtless scenes (which I enjoy a lot) and cheesy CW romance tropes. Also write tighter scripts with less plot holes. Arrow is my favorite network show. Its very very entertaining but it has a lot of flaws. If the script and screen play is not tighter no good art direction, cinematography or action would give them good name. Also CW itself has a bad reputation even though they have some good programming.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Just watched the pilot only so far, and I am very pleased with it so far as I love the dark and gritty feel of the show so far. Very good stage setting and character intro thus far and am looking forward to seeing the flashbacks to fill in the rest of the origin story(ies) and to set the rest of the stage. I like how they acknowledged the fallout of the events of the Avengers movie as for being partially responsible for the criminal activity in Hell's Kitchen and am looking forward to seeing any further references/tie ins to the MCU... good performances by all so far and good to see Deborah Woll onscreen again as she was one of the better things about True Blood before it went off the rails in the latter seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah the Karen and Foggy bonding throughout that episode was really nice but I was so focused on the Matt/Claire story so much that I didn't really care for anything else (except for the flashbacks, those were so raw and emotional).

    ReplyDelete
  77. the cw rating depends on young audience which means romance has to happen...... if Arrow was HBO then there is no romance or very little high budget no plot holes brilliant writing...... AOS has done a very good job having zero to little romance(there has been no sex scene in season 2)......why can't arrow do this when both have 20+ episode

    ReplyDelete
  78. 23 episode can be split into two story arcs with no connection to each other. First 11 episode is one arc and then the second arc of 12. It can be done.

    ReplyDelete
  79. this is gonna be good *clicks on the first episode*

    ReplyDelete
  80. That would be really great. Instead of stretching story lines like who killed Sara they could finish one chapter in the first 11 episodes. Take a long break and come back with another 12 episode arc.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I am not against romance or sex. IMO both are needed in any drama. Its a part of life and it makes characters human. But CW excels in doing romance in the most cliched way possible. They find drama and tension in unnecessary triangles. And most of the romance in that channel is so predictable. We know what is going to happen next before it happens. And they ruin the romance by spoiling everything about it before the show airs. Even though their audience is young I am sure they would appreciate a well done background love story for Oliver on Arrow. Their audience are young not stupid.

Speaking of AoS. It might not have the romance issue of Arrow but for me it is not as entertaining as Arrow, Daredevil or Flash. They have improved a lot, a lot from the beginning but there is still some spark missing from that show. Sometimes I find the dialogues and forced comedy of that show very cheesy.

    ReplyDelete
  82. That flashbacks destroyed me.

    ReplyDelete
  83. the opening intro is AMAZING ! reminds me of Penny Dreadful

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm on episode 12. Can't wait for the finale

    ReplyDelete
  85. Episode 3

Wow WILSON FISK/Kingpin!!! By the time the man was shown I was really scared of him. The build up towards that introduction scene in the gallery was so delicious. The guy who bashed someone's head brutally to death in the beginning of the show kills himself by impaling his head on a spike because he is that scared of Fisk. Wow..

The whole courtroom scene was excellent. This is how you write court room scenes. Arrow writers please take notice.

Karen's and Ben Urich's scenes were really great too. Her part is really heating up. I am glad they send her on a different path from that of Matt.

    An excellent third installment.

    ReplyDelete
  86. do you think there is similariteis between Claire rescue Matt and helping him is kinda similar to Diggle saving Oliver life?

    ReplyDelete
  87. start_wearing_purple11 April 2015 at 00:04

90% of the reason I decided to watch this show is Vincent D'Onofrio and 4 episodes in he does not disappoint.

    ReplyDelete
  88. The vulnerability he brings to the role is really surprising and what makes it so impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  89. In season 1 Arrow it was the other way around. It was Oliver who saved Diggle when he got shot by Deadshot. And also Oliver revealing himself to Diggle was a calculated risk he took.
Where as here Matt had no choice. Claire decided to help him and saw his face before he was conscious. I didn't think about Arrow and Diggle at all until you mentioned. I really liked Claire's introduction.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Just caught episode 1. WOW

I have nothing else to say but amazing, really well balanced between action and crime-drama.

Already blows Arrow out of the water

    ReplyDelete
  91. it an unfair comparison bigger budget stronger writer tighter plot

    ReplyDelete
  92. The budget doesn't have anything to do with the writing and overall tone of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  93. well, it can. smaller budgets less impressive writer. writers don't work for free and the good/talented ones cost.

    ReplyDelete
  94. plus Steven S. DeKnight actually knows not to listen to crazed shi....fans to tell his story

    ReplyDelete
  95. It's one of my favorite things. It can give you chills.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I was even planning on watching it but after seeing so many positive reviews, I will likely check out the pilot later tonight. I'm someone who is tired of superhero themed shows, however, so we'll see if it has the ability to win me over.

    ReplyDelete
  97. For the love of God stop comparing the Daredevil to Arrow!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. so you like arrow more than daredevil!

    ReplyDelete
  99. I haven't watched Daredevil and I don't think I'm going to; it's too dark and violent for my taste. That's not the point, they are two different shows, two different stories and on two different mediums so this comparison is ridiculous and pointless and starting to feel like an excuse to bash Arrow. And can someone tell me how did this become an anti Olicity thread?!

    ReplyDelete
  100. episode 2 is sooooo good, the story is amazing and the cinematography is breathtaking *clicks on the 3rd one*

    ReplyDelete
  101. who do you think started the anti-olicity thread?
I already mention that DD have like a 50 million budget compare to Arrow and probably under 10 million budget

    ReplyDelete
  102. it didn't, you are the only one that actually mentioned it by name. Yeah, I blame it for destroying Arrow but it wasn't the main point.

So watch it and make your own opinion

    ReplyDelete
  103. source for the budget?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I am the only one??? Scroll down.

    ReplyDelete
  105. It's amazing how two people who aren't dating are being blamed for destroyed the show with their relationship!

    ReplyDelete
  106. blame it on me, it's the easiest way anyway. But I don't even want to read any lower.

I did mention Arrows writers being nicer to shippers than to non-ship fans though. So you can actually blame this on me

    ReplyDelete
  107. here http://variety.com/2014/biz/news/disney-chief-bob-iger-new-york-gov-andrew-cuomo-set-11-am-et-news-conference-1201121502/

$200 million budget for 4 marvel Netflix shows so you can estimate it at least 50 million

    ReplyDelete
  108. just scrolled down and there is one conversation discussing ships.

This is in no way an anti Olicity threat....well...it wasn't until you mentioned it

    ReplyDelete
  109. I wasn't talking about you and you're not the only one who talked about it. There was an "i hate olicity and how the show is fanservicing its fans to attract younger audience" party happening earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  110. gah, just watch the show koky, you'll love it.

Ignore my comparissons to Arrow and watch on your own terms :)

    ReplyDelete
  111. to elaborate: the fact that it got such a focus (wich it did, denying that won't help the case) turned me down on the show.

It's a subjective opinion of mine, one that could be wrong. I'm just one guy, many people think like you and love that relationship and what it brings to the show (I'm just negatively touched by the impact it leaves)

    ReplyDelete
  112. That opening scene really elevated Daredevil from the MCU in terms of gore, holy crap. That bowling ball....

    ReplyDelete
  113. I won't watch it and I know i'll hate it, not because of Arrow. I was going to watch it but i've read the comments and the show is clearly very dark and violent and i'm not into that. I'm sure it's great i'm not saying it isn't i'm saying stop comparing shows!

    ReplyDelete

People comparing this to the likes of Arrow. I
can see that, but is that a bad thing? Don't get me wrong, it
definitely differs from Arrow, but the approach to the series is ALMOST
in the same vein. Again, NOT a bad thing.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Well, it is pretty dark (surprisingly dark for the universe its set in, hard to imagine that at the same time Coulson and his team are having child-friendly adventures) but does have some pretty fun moments.

You can't NOT compare them, thematically and stilistically they're identical and share various plot elements.

The budget comment is redundant given there not being any source for that

    ReplyDelete
  116. ウエイン Vi Britannia11 April 2015 at 01:33

Awesome Show! The action sequences were tense and I honestly feared for Matt's life
in some scenario's, which, as you all know, is damn near impossible
when making a superhero movie or television show. I mean, c'mon. Are
they ever REALLY in trouble? In this case, it felt like he was.

    ReplyDelete
  117. So the show was ruined because there's a love story in it? Did Tommy and laurel ruin season 1? Did Thea and Roy ruin season 2? Does the main hero have to be a lonely misrable human being for the show to be good?

    ReplyDelete
  118. it pretty much shares its thematics with Arrow through its main plotline

    - vigilante goes out to save city wich can't be saved by the authorities

sure, Matt isn't a spoiled rich kid but this is pretty much where it ends. Arrow started out as grim and gritty as well, so I don't see why I may not compare it

    ReplyDelete
  119. three episodes deep and its a good show, nothing I'd get wet over.
Its not that violent or dark but this is compared to other things I've seen.

the opening intro is a thing of beauty.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Great then let's compare TVD to Angel shall we?

    ReplyDelete
  121. You get just as mad at my anti-ship comments as I get at shipper comments. We're eerily similar, you don't happen to have a missing twin?

Did Tommy/Laurel ruin it? Not to me, they were annoying but I managed to stomach them. Did Thea/Roy ruin it? Again, not to me as I didn't care about either character.

Why did Felicity/Oliver ruin it? Because it sneaked romantical parts into the entirety of the show turning mission-briefing moments into ship moments, adding the love fern into the cave (thank god its dead) and pretty much took my favourite female character and threw her into a blender

I'm sorry, it's subjective, it's an opinion. Deal with it

if I take it as a negative comparrison you may challenge me on it but you shouldn't question the legitimacy on it.

Can't I ever use it as something that sticks out as negative to ME? Just like Delena ruined TVD for me Olicity is on the verge of ruining Arrow.....TO ME. Doesen't need to affect you

    ReplyDelete
  122. Totally valid comparisson.

Both are set in a fictional world of vampires/werewolves and should be held to the same standarts (and obviously TVD is losing that one).

Now if we compared TVD to Arrow, THAT would be absurd. But I don't see how comparing two superhero shows that have a similar plot is in any shape or form wrong

    ReplyDelete
  123. it's not on a cable level of violence but I'm holding it to a Marvel-standard here and would argue that this pretty much took it as far as Marvel can go violence wise

    ReplyDelete
  124. The fern? Really? That's one of your reasons? A PLANT?!!!! smh
How did the mission briefing moments turn into romantic moments?
TVD is a show built on romance and Delena was a main story so of course it took over the show (i'm an anti delena btw) but you can't compare that to an action show where the main hero has a love interest (and they're not even together!!)

    ReplyDelete
  125. Arrow: 1.5m per episode (23 episodes)
    Daredevil: 3.3m per episode

not that drastic of a difference

    ReplyDelete
  126. Not wrong but rather unrealistic and unfair. the two shows share similar aspects yes but they are so different.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It's refreshing to see Marvel steer away from the happy, comedic, light formula they're so fond of. I definitely prefer this over AOS & AC. I'd love for comic book shows to be much darker like this, I liked Constantine but unfortunately that didn't make it. Watching the 3rd episode right now, don't know how many get through before I'll just need to go to sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Just one point my dear, one of many,

Season 3, Episode 1. Bike chase, Oliver asking Felicity out on a date. Oliver dies, thinks of Felicity and yadayadayada
    it's there koky

And no, TVD was never a romance drama, it started out as a mystery show about the war between two brothers.

And while TVD totally had romance taking control it was more in its storyarc than in Arrow.

And look what happened, we have Oliver and Felicity fight over their romance, him going mad over her dating someone else and her getting mad at him for "not making up his mind". You know, whenever there's a problem coming up on Arrow you can be sure as hell that it'll be followed with at least one line to appease shippers. I dislike that kind of baiting and don't condone it.

Remember our talk about accepting other opinions?

    ReplyDelete
  129. True, the entire set-up is different.

Now watch Daredevil and tell me if it's wrong to compare these shows. Because if you haven't seen it I'm not sure how you can say it's not comparable

    ReplyDelete
  130. quick question: based on some of the comments how many people, prior to watching the show, were familiar with DD?

    ReplyDelete
  131. I was but only from the movie. I'm one of the few who liked the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  132. familiar yes but never actively read a DD comic.

Seen the movie and his appearance on Hulk on Trial

    ReplyDelete
  133. you mean the one with Ben Affleck?

    ReplyDelete
  134. I've read some outtakes from the comics and the BA movie, which I hated. Only because I'm not a fan of Ben Affleck.

    ReplyDelete
  135. same but only because of already low expectations. It was a fine action flick as far as I'm concerned

    ReplyDelete
  136. true, and I way happy they went as far as they did seeing as how DD was always a bit more on the fringe hero.

    ReplyDelete
  137. amen to that comment

    ReplyDelete
  138. Yeah, he doesn't scream action hero. I think on whole, Elektra was far worse.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Yup. Were there others?

    ReplyDelete
  140. Not sure why the comparison bothers you so much honestly...
They have a lot in common aside from just being comic book hero based shows.

    - Vigilante heroes trying to save their city.
    - Team units trios comprised of a hero and 2 others (one man one woman).
    - Darker and less "powered" than other hero shows.
    - Likable leads with tragic loss-filled past.
    - Humorous partners etc.

A lot of those are hero tropes I guess, but the comparison seems obvious and direct to me...
I will agree though, if you don't want to watch it, don't.

    ReplyDelete
  141. no, sorry, for some reason I was thinking of Elektra.

    ReplyDelete
  142. there was actually

    ReplyDelete
  143. I have not read the comics but I had seen the movie in the 80s with Rex Smith as Daredevil and more recntly Affleck's movie.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Lmao that hulk hair!

    ReplyDelete
  145. holy shit, the violence is so gruesome, reminds me of banshee, and the writing is phenomenal !

    ReplyDelete
  146. lol yeah, a different time of marvel movies :P

You should've seen Thor back then ^^

    ReplyDelete
  147. "You're not one of these rich vigilante playboys I've been hearing about?" Well
    talk about Arrow comparrisons lol

    ReplyDelete
  148. f*ck! yes, I knew there was one from way back that I was forgetting.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Watched 3 last night, tonight 10 hour marathon here I come.
Episode 1: Good Start I liked the feel of it a lot. I like how they are connecting with the universe " the Incident" haha, that was no incident. Like Daredevils fight style.

Episode 2: A very good set up to introduce a Claire Temple and a good mix of flashback and use of support cast.

Episode 3: Murdock Got style yo!, He already did from ep 1, but this ep I liked him a lot, and nice end.

    can't wait for

    ReplyDelete
  150. I finally finished and I really like this series. I love the writing, cast and tone of this show. A few things:

    -THE SUIT
-I want Matt's apartment. Clean the windows, add light and paint and I would happily live there.
-One of the best opening sequences of any show
-I get a Scarface vibe from some of the music which made me laugh
-I wonder how long we'll have to wait for more.
-Vincent D'Onofrio was a truly great, vulnerable, insane villain.

    ReplyDelete
  151. The brutality and violence of the fights is off the charts. I just finished watching Episode 4 and it has one of the most brutal death scenes that I have seen recently on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I'd be too bothered by the giant TV wall in front of his appartement (cheap rent tho) :P

    ReplyDelete
  153. I'd tear it down :) I actually love Thea's apartment better. I just love big windows and brick walls.
    Have you finished the show?

    ReplyDelete
  154. That could work, I love the lighting in his appartement. This slight purple tone gave me a Sin City vibe in the first episode.
Totally, but I guess you get the biggest appartements for cheap if your dad shows your landlord his antique sword collection :P

Stopped at 5 (just when the cops showed up) so I have enough episodes to watch over the weekend. Got to go out tonight, don't want to be on a total DD high :P

    ReplyDelete
  155. just saw ep 4 ,its right upto the level of GOT,BANSHEE.
    brutal

    ReplyDelete
  156. You and I are neck and neck in the viewing race. Finished E04 an hour ago. And yes, it was freaking brutal.

    ReplyDelete
  157. 5 episodes in and I'm starting to be actively annoyed.
+5 hours of TV to finally get the barest glimpse of his mysterious powers. Still not a very clear idea of what he does or how he does it
+The fight scenes are all sound and gore with very little actual "fighting." I'm also having a hard time with teeny tiny Charlie Cox is a brawler. He doesn't seem to have any force behind his attacks. Louder sound doesn't get the job done. Turn down the noise and fix the punches.
+Karen sits around gasping all the time, and doesn't tell her employers who helped her against them in the first place that first she has a meeting with a lawyer and then second she wants to go after them. What? How do you not tell your lawyer you have a meeting with a lawyer!!
+Fisk still has no menace to him. If they wanted to make me afraid of him, he should have killed the girl for witnessing his embarrassment either before or after Anatoly. And frankly the door thing wasn't so much gruesome as lazy, like he was so winded he couldn't be bothered anymore. And he is always acting sad. Sad lonely bad buys don't really push my fear buttons
+I like Claire, but I'm over the amount of quiet touching and talking time they are spending on her and Matt. I'd really like to see Matt and Foggy and get come character development rather than little Charlie Cox pretending to be a leading man next to Rosario Dawson--who is so out of his adorable league and never developing an actual personality. There needed to be a switch that flips and he goes from Murdock boy to devil, it's all muddled and since Cox is adorable that's the dominant character trait.

Best part is still the titles, but I"m not sure how ready I am to keep watching. I'm already so bored having to actively pay attention to read the enormous amount of subtitled dialogue is irritating me.

    ReplyDelete
  158. TVD was never a romance drama!!!! lol. Oh my sides hurt that was funny.

    ReplyDelete
  159. um, he doesn't have any "powers" and they have already shown you/talked about what he can do well before the 5th episode. I am not sure what you were expecting but did you know anything about DD before watching this?

    ReplyDelete
  160. He does to have powers--he at the very least has superhearing and wacky vision--which they only "showed" in episode 5--.he can also dodge bullets, throw things and people that weigh more than he does, leap up great heights, and do the weird throw and ricochet thing. If all of that is supposed to be realistic fighting, I'm going to scream. It is ridiculous.

I saw the crappy movie with Ben Affleck, but this is a different world and they get to set up their own premise. They should have done so before halfway through.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Rand McNally to DareDevil, Rand McNally to Daredevil: "Please be advised Hell's Kitchen is not a city. Over."

    ReplyDelete
  162. uh, okay, he doesn't have powers like a normal comic superhero. He has basically very honed sense and a type of echo location (I know some blind people who can actually do this in real life) and everything you described is just and extension of that fundemntal core.

Actually the world is kind of on point for what DD is. He falls more into the Punisher type world then he does say Thor or Hulk etc...

maybe check out his Marvel bio to help -

  163. Historical_Materialist11 April 2015 at 05:19

I have read and collected the comics. This is a spot on, faithful telling of Daredevil's story. See Arrow and Gotham apologists? It is possible to remain faithful to source material and have a dramatic and compelling TV series that isn't boring or predictable.

    ReplyDelete
  164. No. Any necessary information should be in the show. And "echolocation" not in the show. At least not yet. It isn't realistic. He can hear and smell across great distance. He can see things that are flat and he can "echolocate" in silence. I'll accept whatever to make a premise work, but my patience isn't unlimited, it has to be part of the premise. There isn't an unlimited pass. He can't do ANYTHING whenever and them be like "Well we didn't tell you what he can and can't do, so just accept it." At least the crappy Ben Affleck movie gave you something, not he's a blind spiderman with super hearing and wacky vision and speed and reflexes and whatever. It's frustrating at this point. And the entire 5th episode is about relationship drama. Enough already with the dinner dates.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Historical_Materialist11 April 2015 at 05:24

I agree completely. People shouldn't compare the two. One of them is trite and simple minded. The other one is on Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  166. right, well okay then. sorry you don't like it or think the clues are to subtle. maybe its just not the show for you.

    ReplyDelete
  167. That was incredibly insulting. They are making up a fantastical premise. That means they have to explain their logic since the audience can't operate on reality to fill in the gaps. The didn't have a "how do you see scene" until episode 5 and then they glossed over the rest. And they've done it so they can continue to pull unrealistic stunts out of their butts under cover of "radioactive superhero he has powers of some sort" deal with it.

    ReplyDelete
  168. some people don't like the show and are saying "its not DD" but I'm like well, actually it spot on is. But Marvel, to me, is always been good about their characters.

I do like that they combined "Night Nurse" and Claire. My guess is, and what I read (because of Luke Cage show) is a bridge to both shows.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I wasn't being insulting but I am kind of done with this conversation. again, sorry you don't like the show.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Yes, telling people you are sorry they can't pick up subtle clues is always super respectful.

    ReplyDelete
  171. if you read, I said "that you think the clues are too subtle" meaning you wish they were more forthright in their explanation NOT that you didn't pick up on them.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Anyone have a guess why he didn't get the traditional red suit until last episode? I guess he not a true hero and it the final fight/finale.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Just saw the pilot it was really good. I dont have netflix so i have to wait till where i download the series uopload all the episodes in 720p so far they only have ep1

    ReplyDelete
  174. That was some Banshee level blood and gore there.

    ReplyDelete
  175. I have no idea about anything Marvel. I only research about stuff when a movie comes out. I didn't know anything about Daredevil except the fact that he is a blind lawyer who is a vigilante in Hell's kitchen Newyork.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Honestly both are great shows and with kind of same tone. Comparison is quite natural. Both are vigilante stories with less super powered heroes.

Daredevil is a very well done series. My recommendation to it is watch the first episode and decide for yourselves if the show is too dark and violent for you. Even though it is violent I don't get that icky feeling I get when I watch cable shows like Banshee. The hero is very likable and you will root for him instantly. Lot of good side characters. Try one episode Koky. Make your own opinion. I have a feeling you will like it.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Maybe they plan to do Luke Cage and Jessica Jones direct route.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Maybe its because I'm in the 20's that I don't care if something is Violent for me or to much cuss words, but I wonder why some do think of those things.

I actually never cared for it, for as long as I remember.

My mentality for Tv shows, is not this or that much choose which to watch; its Gotta watch em' all. - why not all?!

    ReplyDelete
  179. Episode 4

Don't ever break a bad guys date. That is code 101. That was extremely brutal. Loved every moment of Claire. She is badass. Will she ever be able to return to her home? I love the developing relationship between her and Matt a lot. Matt and the Russians stand off was awesome.

Karen's and Urich's side story is developing very nicely. Foggy needs more to do though.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Just watched episode 4. I change my opinion. The gore increases each episode. Its better you pass up on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  181. To each their own I guess. For me I have no issue with violence and gore if it is balanced with good story. But I am not a fan of too much swear words and nudity. I am prissy like that. That's why I can't get behind lot of cable shows.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Just finished watching the 13 eps and thought that they were great. I have one burning question for the comic book readers and everyone else - What is Madame Gao? Is she human, alien or a demon?
She said 3 very interesting things:
    1) She speaks all of the languages - Is that on earth or the universe?,
    2) The drug trade was convenient for her - What was her real motive and why did the people blind themselves? What did they believe in?
and 3) She was going home, which was a long way away - Further than China? This Planet/Universe/Dimension?
I hope that we learn more in the next series. AKA Jessica Jones has a lot to live up to. Don't let the lady down Marvel & Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  183. Yes I noticed that.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I see, yea to me they are just other words. ppl are different for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  185. well just finished the season and I must say. I am super happy and impressed by it. I am by no means a huge daredevil fan, and have little comic knowledge outside of videogames or spider-man cameos, however I really felt like they stayed true to what I did know of. Not only did it have the feel of a dark, gritty comic story, but it had the fun and witty dialogue of a great movie. I think Charlie Cox nailed the performance of Murdock and the rest of the cast did spectacular. The different gangs had a very cool and organic feel to the underground world of Hell's Kitchen and it added a beautiful pool of enemies to explore and defeat.

My gripes about the show are not absent, I would of really preferred that they were able to weave the characters a little better together, I mean I was expecting Rosario Dawsons, Cassandra to be present for the majority. She only turned up in three to five episodes and was only referenced a handful of times outside of that. The Stick story seemed very out of place in the whole of the story, I would of really liked to have seen the overall plot fit that in a little better. I would of loved to see more flashbacks throughout each episode rather than only a handful of episodes having them. The final costume of Daredevil had me excited but at the same time something felt off about it to me.

Despite these gripes I still overly enjoyed the series and thought that the writing, acting, choreography and music were impactful and memorable. I really felt that Marvel hit this one out of the park.

    9/10

    ReplyDelete
  186. I feel the same way about the darkness and grittiness of Daredevil...
Well, honestly I feel that way about any show that deals with the criminal world even if told from the "heroes" perspective.

It always comes off as so false and hollow when criminals are in a shiny and clean world with no darkness, no swearing or violence etc.. Parts of this world are very dark and misrepresenting them comes off as childish to me most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I agree on all points...
I think some of your complaints may be taken care of in a second season or as the various Defenders series play out. A lot of the connections are there, but not explained well at all. I think they lay everything out in the comics though.

The little research I did on Daredevil that I did put things in perspective. Stick part of one secret organization collecting and training warriors to fight another clan that Nabu was part of...Maybe Kingpin/ Fisk and Madame Gao as well I'm not 100% sure.

I think that they did not share any of those connections with us because Matthew Murdock is unaware of them at this point. He is still in the infancy of his evolution to a hero and does not know how he fits into the larger narrative.

Hopefully there will be another season and they will get deeper in the mythology!
These 113 episodes were awesome, but went by so fast. Also like you noted they were so centered on Murdock that some of the supporting characters were left by the wayside at times. I enjoyed them for what they were, but more of them would have been nice

    ReplyDelete
  188. I wondered about her too.

I'm not familiar with the comics, but I tried to see if she was a character in the comics. I did not find her or a corresponding character. To be honest I only spent a few minutes looking.

Maybe one of the comic book readers recognizes her or her role in the comics...

    ReplyDelete
  189. I gave it a rating of Great, instead of awesome.

When it was really on, it was absolutely awesome. But, it did have a little lag at times where they dragged out a scene/plot point too long.

Also felt a bit cheated that we didn't get the Daredevil suit till the last 10 mins of the season. Not saying they had to have him in it by ep 2. But a full ep of it would have been better.

Also, I didn't like the fact the writers tried making us sympathize for the nemesis by showing he had a terrible childhood. Its so overdone nowadays. I didn't think it needed that.

As for the acting. Spectacular. I rarely felt any moments where they mailed it in. The stunts were terrific too. They will give Arrow and Agents Of SHIELD a run for best stunts.
Best part for me, and I think its because of the fact Netflix drops the whole season at once.... the story didn't deviate off its course like Arrow or other shows do where the writers feel pressure to cave in to a vocal minority of shippers as the season goes along & re-design their story arcs to fit in pointless drama love triangles. They had romantic elements in the show, I think every main character had a relationship of some type on the season, and the writers didn't drown you in it. Perhaps The CW should look at this & learn.
Netflix is really hitting a lot of home runs since I signed up for them last year. Daredevil, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Killing S4. They seem to be doing really good at picking their projects. I am getting to the point where I just trust if Netflix made it, its going to be good.

    ReplyDelete
  190. Getting really into the show now. So more episode reactions from me!

    Episode 2 'Cut Man'

+ Love the relationship between Matt and his father. "Just once I want Matty to hear people cheer for his old man. Just once". Don't mind me I'm just going to cry for a little while. Even if the fate of his dad was inevitable it is still really sad especially as he was trying to do the right thing for once and not throw the match.

+ That fight scene at the end was incredible, I will be rewatching it on loop for a while.

+ Claire seems really great already. Loved her scenes with 'Mike'. She seems pretty street smart.

+ Foggy and Karen friendship of win continues. "And we are now filled with mighty eel strength!" <3

Episode 3 'Rabbit In A Snow Storm'

+ It is interesting to see Matt and Foggy doing their dayj ob. Matt's senses give him a pretty good advantage!

+ I am really intrigued by the appearance of Ben Urich. The media is one aspect of the MCU which hasn't been explored a lot so its gonna be interesting to see where this goes especially as Spider-man is now happening in the MCU and the press is an important part of his story.

+ Connected with Ben's story is that of Karen's and I really like her so far, Deborah Ann Woll was by far the best part of True Blood when I still watched it and she brings such a likability to Karen.

+ And Wilson Fisk gets mentioned, should be I worried by just typing his name? He Who Shall Not Be Named. Things we have learned about Mr Fisk in this episode, don't use his name and he likes pretentious modern art.

+ The grossest wtf moment so far? Stabbing oneself in the eye with a bit of rusty metal. I cringed. Even Matt seemed grossed out and he couldn't see the damn thing.

    Episode 4 'In The Blood'

+ OK so that disgusting moment from episode 3 has nothing on Russian dude breaking the rib his dead inmate to get a weapon. Hardcore.

+ Vincent D'Onofrio is just phenomenal as Fisk. There is this quiet menace but also a vulnerability in his scenes with Vanessa. He is just so awkward with her. Throughout the episode you just know he is going to flip and show his true nature and he does so in such a incredibly violent way. He may claim that "Tonight I am just a man" but there is a monster lurking within that man.

+ More of Ben and Kate teaming up which is delightful. Stay safe!

+ Matt's scenes with Claire continue to sparkle and I like how he is questioning his actions.

    Episode 5 'World on Fire'

+ Great use of the episode title as an explanation of how Matt sees the world.

+ Again the chemistry between Claire and Matt is really great.

+Senor Foggy may well be my favourite thing. That entire storyline with Kate and Foggy helping out the residents is really lovely and fun and then I wasn't expecting the explosions to blowback on them! Damn.

+ The cab fight with the singing Chinese man was beautifully filmed

+ I knew those detectives were dodgy in the first episode with Kate! As if Hell's Kitchen hasn't got enough problems.

+ I am really fascinated by Wilson's justification for the things he does. He claims to be cleaning up the city and helping it change. There are better ways to do that than be a crime lord! Vanessa seems to be buying what he is selling though.

+ Damn that ending, onto the next episode I go!

    ReplyDelete
  191. I've watched the first episode late last night. Keep in mind I am completely and utterly clueless when it comes to heroes and comic books. Not crazy but perhaps it''ll get better. DD sure get his *** kicked a lot xD. Is that normal? Gonna research a bit online about his origins/abilities and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Half way through E5 here. I will catch up with you. ;) :)

    ReplyDelete
  193. Yes I had a quick google as well and didn't find anything either. She could be a mash-up of several characters or she might be a new character created for this series that hints at a larger cosmic(?) Marvel plot. In any case I loved the inclusion of a female villain in the group, and giggled when she hit Daredevil with one kick-ass chest punch and then hobbled away.

    ReplyDelete
  194. I've seen documentaries or stories about people with that echo location ability. Awesome stuff!

    And I agree...
The show does get into his abilities and why he has them. Young Matthew was blinded by a radioactive substance. Said substance caused his blindness and heightened his senses. Matthew himself does not understand exactly how or why he can do the things he can do. End of story and not very difficult to get really...
