Chicago Fire - I Am The Apocalypse - Review

10 Apr 2015

We waste no time jumping into the action. With numerous victims in respiratory distress, Squad and Truck assist Ambo in getting the victims to Chicago Med. After a series of very unfortunate events, everyone in the ER – including many from Firehouse 51 – are quarantined until it can be determined whether or not everyone is infected with a deadly disease. How did this happen, you ask?

Well…

It’s Dr. Will Halstead’s (brother of Chicago PD’s Detective Jay Halstead) first day of work at Chicago Med. Not only is he running late, but he’s already planning on leaving Chicago to move back to New York. Something tells me his plans are about to change…

The scene is set for the possible second Chicago Fire spinoff – Chicago Med. We’re introduced to the hospital workers who I’m assuming will comprise the main cast of Chicago Med, should it be ordered to series. We’re already familiar with a few faces – Dr. Will Halstead and Nurse April Sexton.

We’re quickly introduced to Dr. Hannah Tramble, a surgeon, and Sharon Goodwin. I’m still not entirely sure what Sharon’s role is within the hospital, but it seems like she runs the show. This is her house. In a brief exchange, it seems Will has already gotten on her bad side. Whoops!

I also love that Kendra makes a brief appearance – especially with Severide. It’s a subtle flashback to the days when Shay was around. I don’t think we will ever get over that.

On to the action!
As April calls for the attention of the now very full ER, a man swiftly stands up on a chair, yells, “You thought Ebola was a nightmare, I am the Apocalypse…!” and pulls a grenade as Severide dives across, tackling April. Would it be horribly cheesy to say Chicago Med started off with a bang?

The scene that unfolded was eerily similar to last season’s finale; an explosion occurs and everyone is inside exception for Boden, who’s left only with his walkie to communicate to his men inside. What’s more, Shay didn’t make it out of that building last season and now Severide’s life hangs in the balance. As everyone inside goes into triage mode, Dr. Halstead quickly declares Severide a black tag (which means dead or near dead) and my heart was beating a mile a minute. With the assistance of Mills and Brett, Dr. Tramble works to save Severide for the duration of the episode. While unconscious, Severide has quick, flash memories of Shay. The episode all around was incredible, but this by far was my favorite piece of it. Shay, we still miss you.

When Will checks April for a concussion, she’s sassy, smart, and on her game. I’ve been slow to come around to April (and Will, for that matter), but both saw a good amount of screen time in this episode and shined. I think they both found their characters – and I really like their interaction. I know there are quite a few April/Severide shippers out there, but I’m going to go ahead and jump on the April/Will ship, even if I’m on it alone! I stand by what I’ve said before, cross-show romances don’t have a great history of success. There’s real potential with April and Will.

I had no idea Oliver Platt would be on this show but I squealed when he appeared! I hope with every fiber of my being that if Chicago Med is picked up, Oliver Platt is involved. He’s incredible. He’s already phenomenal as psychiatric doctor Daniel Charles. The younger crew of Chicago Med has two excellent leaders in Dr. Daniel Charles and Sharon Goodwin – who already work very well together.
The Chicago Med team is shaping up to be an interesting crew; Dr. Halstead is making a big adjustment in Chicago, and I have a feeling we have barely scratched the surface with his past. April is fiery and compassionate and I’m willing to bet we see her bend a few rules (probably with Dr. Halstead!) to save lives; the girl’s not afraid to do what needs to be done. Then there’s Dr. Hannah Tramble – I don’t have a good read on her yet, but she seems to have something to prove (don’t we all?).

While the Chicago Med team triages the people in the ER, the Chicago Fire crew works to stop a nasty fire in the ceiling. When more fire extinguishers are needed, Cruz and Rice head in. Now wait a minute, you are going to send the single father possibly in to his death? No! Rice should not have gone in.

Gabby assists Dr. Halstead in stabilizing a man with someone else’s ulna protruding from his chest area. Not an ideal situation. While it would have been completely inappropriate for the situation, I almost wanted Gabby to turn to Will and say, “Hi, I’m Gabby. I used to date your brother.” But more importantly, Gabby once again reminded us how awesome she is with patients and medicine. I really would like to see her as a paramedic again!

Once again, Herrmann steps up and I just have to wonder, when are we going to see him in a lieutenant position? When the doctor arrives to test for the possibility of a deadly disease, Herrmann volunteers to be the subject. My heart broke just a bit as he pulled out a picture of his family, thinking he may never see them again.

But have no fear! They are not infected. Of course they aren’t infected – we certainly can’t kill two casts.

And after an episode of longing glances, the news of not being infected with a deadly disease is enough to throw Casey and Dawson back together – at least for that night. Whatever! I’ll take what I can get.

Outside the hospital, Detectives Halstead, Dawson, and Officer Ruzek worked to solve the suicide attack. While I won’t ever complain about seeing Ruzek, I particularly liked that Jay and Antonio were the detectives selected for this episode, as they both had family members inside the hospital. I’m hoping that with Chicago Med, we see more of the Halstead family background. While we’re on the subject, I could use plenty more Dawson family scenes and background as well.

I’ve been very skeptical of this second spinoff. If this episode was any indication, I am no longer concerned – Chicago Med has great potential. But my favorite part of this episode (I realize I’ve said that a few times now…oh well) is how seamlessly the casts of Fire, PD, and Med fit together. Get ready for some fantastic crossovers!

What did you think of the episode? Will and Casey and Dawson finally reconcile? Will Dr. Halstead stick around? What do you think of the possible Chicago Med?

  1. I love your review, Meghan, and this was no different!! You hit the nail on the head! It took me until the day after the episode to realise that (and although I knew), we'd have two sets of siblings - the Dawson's and the Halstead's gracing our screens if Med does indeed (which I have a feeling it will) get picked up.
It was a great spin-off episode, and hopefully, if it is picked up, we retain the cast (one reason I haven't watched the Chicago PD spin-off ep - haven't actually watched S1 of Fire).

  2. Don't see chemistry between April and will I want April and Severide

  3. Apart from the recently-cast actors for the spin-off, what about the ones we had from last year, the the couple of doctors we saw from the Fire/PD hospital explosion episode?

  4. I love your reviews and always seem to agree with you! I loved this episode and I think Chicago Med has a lot of potential. I love hospital dramas and have been looking for one since ER. I think Casey and Dawson won't get back together right away but hopefully now the spark is started and won't go away. I loved these two in this episode. You can tell how much they care about each other.

  5. Outstanding review my favorite one yet. I loved this episode too bad it's not new next week. But besides all that im glad severity survived

  6. Gosh the Dawson/Casey scene at the end was HOT! If this is how they react to stress, that they should have more stressful daysl LOL even though we all know it was more than just that excuse. YES, YES and YES more Dawson's siblings scenes and background. As for Chicago Med...to be honest without the Chicago Fire cast, the episode would have been awful. Except from Oliver Platt who's AMAZING, the rest of the cast is just meh!

I'm looking at the brightside, Gabby will be back as a paramedic in the next episode.

Severide having some Shay memories was bittersweet.

  7. Watching the backdoor pilot, it seems like Chicago Med is setting up two main couples to drive storylines forward, Dr. Halstead and Dr. Tramble and April and Severide. Dr. Halstead should bring in Chicago PD viewers and Severide should bring in Chicago Fire viewers, so this was a good idea. They are really trying to give Chicago Med it's best chance to succeed.

I would have liked more character development on Dr. Tramble and this is where introducing her before the Chicago Med pilot would have been helpful. The scene with Dr. Halstead and Dr. Tramble was supposed to get us to link the two, but without any back story, we really don't know why. It was shocking, but it probably went over some viewers.

  8. I like there is some family connection between chicago fire/Chicago PD and chicago PD/Chicago med

  9. Contrary to you, I don't see the potential between April and Will. I see it, however, between Will and Hannah. I loved that scene between them toward the end, when he found her exhausted in the corner of the room. I was certain there would be some "deep" conversation and was pleasantly surprised that all was said with silence and a squeeze of the hand. I don't know if it may be romantic, but I'm always looking for friendship potential and Will and Hannah can definitely become good friends.

As for April and Severide... I don't know what to think. His "I don't remember any of it" combined with that final shot, how desolate and, I don't know... scared?... he seemed, it gave me some eerie feeling. Does he really not remember? Or is he lying about that and if so -- why?

I guess I expected there to be some consequences from his close encounter with the grenade and as there seem to be none, physically (he's back in action in the next episode, I think), I kind of see some "do you have a death wish?" question hanging over his head.

  10. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that voice that voice................Eamonn Walker that voice,,,,
just melts............ he does a great american accent .. I'm gonna have to start watching Chicago Fire

  11. Thank you!

I hope they retain the cast too. They already work very well together!

  12. I don't know about them...I know Chicago Med has been in talks for a while and I believe they were part of the initial potential cast, but I don't know that they will be involved in anything moving forward.

  13. I would be more for April and Severide if they were on the same show. I just don't like cross-show romances! I think there was not a spark, but perhaps a pre-spark between April and Will? I don't know what the makeup of Chicago Med will be, but I have a feeling that April and Will have a lot ahead of them.

  14. Thank you!

You really can tell that the feelings are still there between Dawson and Casey.

I'm excited but also nervous for Chicago Med only because NBC already has The Night Shift (which I love) and has begun to cast another medical drama. Will they really move forward with 3? I don't know.

  15. Thank you!

This was definitely one of my favorite episodes of the season. I hate that it's off for a while, but I am excited for another crossover.

  16. Agreed!!

I can't say enough good things about Oliver Platt. I wasn't exaggerating when I said I squealed when he came on screen. I LOVE him! But I think that's the reason the Fire cast was there; we don't completely know the Chicago Med crew yet, and this helped introduce them.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree that they are giving Chicago Med its best change to succeed, but I'm not sold on those couples.

I didn't see any romantic chemistry between Will and Hannah, but it's also only been an episode, so who knows. My bet would be on a Will/April romance. I just can't get behind a cross-show romance, they don't work. It's for that reason I was never on board with Severide and Erin.

My bet is that if Chicago Med is ordered to series, we won't see it until January of 2016 (similar to Chicago PD's start). That would give us enough time to get to know Hannah (and the others) a bit more before they are on their own.

  18. You know, I first thought that maybe there could be something between Will and Hannah. But after watching it a second time, I'm just not sure. Maybe it's there, but I don't know. Would they go the love triangle route? Those are always hit or miss.

Oh I definitely feel like Severide was lying there...or something. But you're exactly right, why?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Eamonn Walker is the BEST!!!! Fire would not be what it is without Chief Boden. If you're not watching Fire regularly, you need to fix that!

  20. This episode was amazing. Like you, I was skeptical of the Med characters, and I really don't like cross show romances, but I like Will Halstead. I see a lot of potential with his character. I loved everyone from Chicago Fire working together to save each other and the patients. I felt like Mills stepped up and saved Severide when Will wanted to black tag him. If Mills does leave next week it will be very sad. I've really grown to love him, and I don't want his story to be over.

I think Severide does remember seeing Shay, but isn't ready to talk about it yet. Maybe he just doesn't understand it? Hopefully he'll tell Casey or Dawson about it next week. He looked so sad!

Other notes: I loved that Dawson helped the patients. This was the first episode in a while that I liked her. I just like her so much more in a medical capacity than as a firefighter. Also, Herrmann is amazing. His scenes are always great, and he nailed the emotional stuff in this episode.

  21. count on it.... lol

that was the first ep.. I've ever watched.. and that was only because of the spin off.... about Chicago Med... I'm gonna have to go back to the beginning at season one... I put it on my dvr to record as well...

    ReplyDelete
  22. My take is that Severide said he didn't remember because he didn't want April to feel guilty about him saving her. She entered the scene worried, so Severide did what he usually does and accepted the guilt for himself. And that's probably why April left, she realized that he took responsibility for everything and couldn't deal with it at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I sure hope Mills doesn't leave! I don't think he will. I refuse to accept that he could.

I think I agree - Severide probably remembers but doesn't want to talk about it.

I completely agree. Dawson is much more likable in a medical capacity.

  24. Loved your review... best one so far! I love Severide & April and really want them together. Also, I saw chemistry between Hannah & Will... I don't know but something clicked :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am too love when they feature three way crossovers

    ReplyDelete
  26. They are clearly setting up Hannah/Will and April/Severide ships. I honestly don't know where this "pre spark" between Will and April you saw was at, he made sure she didn't have a concussion and moved on. How about a big no thank you to Will and April. Even she doesn't wind up with Severide, I don't her and Will to be a thing. Just no. Derek Haas has shown himself to be supportive of April and Severide being a couple. I don't how long it will last but I'm almost certain it will happen per Derek Haas' tweets.

April has been a take charge, on top of her game, no nonsense kind of girl from the moment she was on Chicago Fire. You could see that much from the little material they gave her with Severide. She didn't fall into his arms immediately like most women. This episode is was just an extension of that to her in the workplace. I wasn't shocked to see her kick ass, I expected it. I'm excited to see April on Chicago Med along with Sharon. S. Epatha Merkerson is a amazing and I loved the way she shut down Will and his nonsense with a single finger.

  27. Thank you!

I just can't get behind Severide and April because I don't like cross-show romances. It's the same reason I didn't like Severide and Lindsay.

Now Will and April I can definitely get behind. There was something between Will and Hannah, and I can't decide if it's platonic or romantic. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how everything pans out!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really just see potential for April and Will. I've said it before, but I can't get behind cross-show romances because they have never worked out well (see Severide and Lindsay). Sure, there's a first time for everything, but I'd rather see characters get involved with characters on their own shows.

This was the first time we got to see April and the rest of the Chicago Med crew in action (with the exception of Will's house call on PD last week). I can't wait to see more! I'd also like to know exactly what went down in that interview that caused Will to get on Sharon's bad side.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Erin and Severide as a ship was hated by fans and really didn't make sense at all. Most ppl wanted to see Erin with Jay and were very vocal about it. So they aren't a good example to fall back on. If the writers find a pair the fanbase will get behind and they want it to work, it can. I don't know why anyone would think April would put up with Will. But to each their own...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I actually see a lot of similarities between who Will is now and who Severide was when the Fire started. Severide has grown so much, and I'm sure Will will do the same!
