The actor has signed a new deal to return but boss David Amann will be exiting ahead of a potential renewal.
ABC's Castle took one big step closer toward a seventh season and another step back.
On the plus side, star Nathan Fillion — rumored to be ready to move on from the series — has signed a new deal to return to the veteran procedural, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. On the negative side, showrunner David Amann will not be returning to the series he has overseen for the past year.
Meanwhile, co-star and Fillion's leading lady Stana Katic, has yet to re-up for a potential season seven — with rumors circulating that the series could return for a final, 13-episode run.

Stana will follow shortly. My brother is happy about this. Greetings from him to all Castle fans.
ReplyDeleteImo it will be renewed for a full season.
ReplyDeleteThey will renew it now. Stana will sign it eventually.
ReplyDeleteYESSS!!
ReplyDeleteGive it a full final season with 2 hour finale!
If she doesn't come back show is over for me... Can't go on without Caskett
ReplyDeleteHopefully Stana signs too, and I think it'll be renewed for a shortened, final season.
ReplyDeleteSame here.If she's out,i'm out too!
ReplyDeleteUm, it'll be season 8, not season 7.
ReplyDeleteIf they both sign for a full season 8, season 9 is likely.
ReplyDeleteYep, they have a small typo in there. " took one big step closer to season 8...! (not 7)
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about? It says season 8.
ReplyDeleteThe article says 7th, not 8th.
ReplyDeleteSo great news. Really happy even if it's shrot 8th season. Just enough to wrap up all lose ends and make it great finale for the show.
ReplyDeleteAlso it says Nathon
ReplyDeletei think Stana wil sign soon:)
ReplyDeleteGood, even if it´s just a short season, but if Stana doesn´t sign too, I probably won´t keep watching (the show just won´t be the same for me):(
ReplyDeleteThis is all moot there is going to be a Season 8 Which I am glad. What form well we will not know until upfronts.
ReplyDeleteNo the 7th refers to this ending season. Not the Coming on which will be the eighth.
ReplyDeleteThis season has been so awful with both Castle and Beckett there, without one of them it's going to be absolutely un-watchable. They should just cancel it if she doesn't sign.
ReplyDeletehope Stana signs too. there is no Castle without Beckett.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they will do an eight season without Stana, some characters are just essential. It would be better to end after season 7 than to continue without Beckett.
ReplyDeletethat's completely speculation.
ReplyDelete"Castle took one big step closer toward a seventh season" EIGHTH, not seventh.
ReplyDelete"Stana Katic has yet to re-up for a potential season seven" EIGHT, season 7 is the one ending now.
Yeah, totally agree!
ReplyDeletethat's interesting, I didn't think that Katic would be the holdout. Well, it can go on without her.
ReplyDeleteStill got two likable detectives that work well with Castle
If ratings stay the same as season 7 it's very likely. And ABC want Castle to stay few more years.
ReplyDeleteWhat ABC "wants" is money, what ABC says is fan-appeasement. If Castle ceases to be profitable it'll get the axe
ReplyDeleteI could easily see them doing a final season with Stana showing up as a Special Guest Star a few times. Lots of ways they could make that work and one is seeming pretty likely.
ReplyDeletemaybe, but it will again come down to Stana and Nathan. Just because they sign for a full eight season, doesn't mean they will sign for season 9 as well.
ReplyDelete13 more episodes sounds good. They can wrap up everything nicely. Gonna miss it though. This was/is such a feelgood show for me. It's refreshing that they managed to get the main couple together and keep them interesting.
ReplyDeleteI'd be so happy if it were just the boys with Beckett becoming a captain or Sargent in another city,or just guest staring in a few eps. But. I'm sure she'll sign on for another season unless she has something in the works already.
ReplyDeleteABC is actively searching for a show runner so that tells me they are going to renew it. Which to me also means that Stana will probably re sign soon. I cannot believe they would go on without her
ReplyDeleteafter smallvill and supernatural as examples I've made an effort to ditch shows after a showrunner leaves, but being that mythology is not the main reason I watch castle I will see how it goes.
ReplyDeleteThe show doesn't work without Beckett. Most the mythology is played out and the rest is almost done. The only reason people really watch Castle at this point if for Caskett, this show isn't NCIS or CSI. I know this is a crime show but it's really a love story. I don't really care how long it's renewed for, just give the fans the ending it deserves.
ReplyDeleteI wish this hadn't been announced now with just Fillion signing on but not Katic. The hate and threats have already started on Twitter and Instagram from some people. I love the show and would like nothing more than an 8th season, and I believe it can't go ahead without both leads involved, but if she doesn't sign and it's cancelled so be it - that's her decision to make and hers alone and people should respect that. I think that's my rant done with for the day...
ReplyDeleteActually, the entire show will collapse without her at this point.
ReplyDeleteAnd a good rant that was ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to imagine that after this she wouldn't sign. No matter what was her reasons before (and Marlowe's leaving could be another reason why she would not like to continue), if she quit all the frustration and anger of the Caskett fandom would fall on her.
ReplyDeleteI told many times I like Stana very much, but commercially the most valued asset she managed to gain during the past seven years is her fandom. The movies she made in this time were neither critical nor box office successes. Castle is a solid performer, but none of its roles requires any mentionable talent. (It tells a lot when even the channel's promo focuses on her hair as her MV perk.)
Making a significant part of this fandom angry and alienate them would be a very unwise decision. I think she needs to be really bored/pissed off/fed up with the show, to take all the blame from it being cancelled.
That kinda sucks hopefully Stana signs on.
ReplyDeleteOf course they are actively searching, they always wanted to renew it. But they need to find one much sooner than when they need to sign with Stana. If she wants the moon and the stars, but otherwise willing to continue, they can bargain till the last day, before the shooting of S8 starts, the worst case is that they will need to agree on her terms.
ReplyDeleteBut the writers must start to wotk in the middle of June, and surely a new showrunner would also like to have some impact on the new ones as well. As soon as the channels announce at the upfront which new shows they order, the quality crews on the market will be booked. They need to find the new showrunner in two-three weeks, otherwise they will need to start to work with the worse ones.
you are correct. I'd just like to add 22+ episodes a year gives her zero time to commit to any long duration movies, she can only take small roles unless she wishes to burn through her time off from Castle to do something with a bit more time demand.
ReplyDeletewell, I think Nathan understands he has to commit before the rest of the dominoes can actually make a move. Agree it would have been nice to know the news when both Stana and Nathan sign, but let's face it, the rabid animals known as the press will pick off any chunk of news to throw at us and guess what, we gobble it up...
ReplyDeleteCastle going on without her is not going to work. They will undoubtedly renew it in May like they normally do, but I don't believe Stana Katic will hold up negotiations past that. It amazes me they would be willing to go on without her. They should not have announced his re signing before she was done as well. I don't care that they probably didn't negotiate together but they should have announced re signing together. This announcement today leads some people to believe she will not be back when that may not be the case
ReplyDeleteHow come the sentence "took one big step closer toward a seventh season" could refer to the ongoing season? It's obviously a typo in both cases.
ReplyDeleteHmm I don't know what I think about this.
ReplyDeleteIt's strange that NF would sign on to continue without SK. It's strange that NF signed on with the show runners leaving.
Something strange is going on here.
Also, ABC announcing this is probably their way to get SK to sign on. She'll get pressured by fans and the like to sign on.
Yes they omitted the word ending of the 7th season.
ReplyDeleteAgreed, without her the show would very likely sink. That she didn't announced her not signing together with Nathan's decision means to me that the option she had already decided to quit can be ruled out. Seems like she is really willing to come back and in that case it can be a chicken game.
ReplyDeleteThe longer she is negotiating the better is her position (the preparations will be done with her in the picture), but the heavier flak she will get from the fandom to sign as well. There were hate posts on the net right after this news, imagine what can be later.
That's one of the reason why I thought she has already decided to step down. That she didn't make her announcement together with NF (or very soon after it) means to me that it's not the case, she is willing to come back.
ReplyDeleteExactly Even if they weren't negotiating together this news should have waited till she signed on. I do doubt that she will wait much longer because the upfronts are coming
ReplyDeleteABC can announce the next season on the upfronts even though she hasn't signed yet - happened with a lot of show, TBBT and Modern Family were the latest coming into my mind.
ReplyDeleteIn the worst case if the positions are far her best interest is to wait until ABC officially binds itself to S8. Pick a new showrunner and starts preparing the new season. Every day and every cent they invest into S8 planning with Beckett in the show gives her a greater leverage.
I'm thinking it will be a limited season...
ReplyDeleteThat is always a possibility but I still don't think she will wait that long
ReplyDeletethere's no point in the show if Castle and Beckett aren't solving crime together.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's how it is. Without Stana, no Castle, no Nathan.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying it's ideal, but I am saying it is possible, if Stana doesn't want to commit to a full season, they can limit her appearances and have Kate pop in and help the team whenever or brainstorm with Rick when he's at home...
ReplyDeleteI don't think they would do that. Especially now when they still have the chance to make the season 7 finale a decent series finale.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't watch without her... Though honestly, I'd probably watch without Castle.
ReplyDeleteIf they are hell bent on renewing the show they will do whatever it takes to keep the show on. And if they manage to get a deal that keeps Stana happy (kinda like they have with Patrick Dempsey on Grey's) then I don't see them not taking it.
ReplyDeleteIf Stana gets the same deal as Nathan for 13 episodes she'll sign.
ReplyDeleteWell, yeah. That's my point.
ReplyDeleteABC knows better than to go on with the show without SK so there's something really strange going on. There's definitely more to the story than what's being said here.
My guess is that SK got a lower pay compared to NF and ABC is pressuring her to sign on anyway with this so-called 'news'. Or. Whoever reported this don't know what's going on and it's all bull.
ABC wants the show come back because it has audience. Keeping it in a way which surely results a serious drop in the audience is foolish - any new show can produce a 0.8-0.9 rating.
ReplyDeleteThat's the flipside of the previous years' tactics. The show focused not only exclusively on the two leads, but even with them in the focus they either work on a case or imitating lovebirds. No life, no third party conflicts, zero direct interactions with anybody else in the cast.
Reducing Beckett's presence would have the same effect as when a one engine plane is losing its power. Except that in case of a plane a safe emergency landing is a success, but ABC would hardly wait till the numbers glide down to the ground.
I'm not disagreeing that if they do that it won't be a smart play. Because yes the appeal of the show is Castle/Beckett.
ReplyDeleteBut TV execs usually don't know better... and if they do know they don't care... so if that's all they get in order to keep the Castle brand on the air, then that's what they'll do to keep it on the air.
And when the ratings drop exponentially they'll cancel the show unceremoniously. It's cold, and it's not fair but that's how TV works...
they haven't renewed the show yet and they won't without Stana. Nathan's contract obviously is only relevant if there is a season 8.
ReplyDeleteOnly watch Castle for Katic, without Katic, what's on the other channels?
ReplyDeleteNeither did I think Stana would be the hold out. Just goes to show you never know. Also there is no way I am watching Castle with out Stana.
ReplyDeleteTrue, you can predict the best you can but you'll never know the career based decisions people make.
ReplyDeleteBut I've read some comments of hers about being done when the show is done creatively and if she indeed sticks to that point I actually applaud her.
It's weird, I thought people would be watching the show for Fillion
haven't watched since season 5, got too romancy for me (you know me, I can't bear this stuff).
ReplyDeleteAnd while she was always more than integral I thought that you could replace her with a new lead detective.
The shows formula is "cocky writer pairs up with detective to solve crimes", they still got the cocky writer
The formula changed a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI think if Miller & Marlowe are let go, Katic will only do 13 episodes, if she signs at all.
ReplyDeleteI can understand why Stana wouldn't sign on because of the threats against her life that were made on twitter and the negative comments said about the show. I am sure Mr. Amann left due in part to the negative comments and disrespect he has received from some fans on his taking the reins of the show because it doesn't meet their expectations. Frankly, he has done a fine job and I thoroughly have enjoyed this season.
ReplyDeleteWhatever decision Stana makes, I totally respect her decision. If Castle gets a season 8 great. If not, that's okay too. Life goes on.
#CastleRocks
Maybe not. Now that Stana is married for real, she may not come back. She is also working on a movie. Without her, there is no Castle! Who knows how long we have to wait to find out?
