I know that this is a really unpopular opinion but...I'm really sick of the Inhumans part.
Look when I said that I wanted super powered heroes recruited by SHIELD I didn't mean that I wanted whiny, over-pimped d-bags with way too much attitude. Guys, you're a race created to be slaves, don't get too koky. The only Inhumans I still somehow like are Raina and the eye-less guy. Skye, her mom and Lincoln can go deep into a hole and stay there. I'd love to keep Cal though, he's fun.
I love Skye (she's one of my favorite characters on this show) and Raina but I don't trust anyone else. I am liking the Inhumans storyline a lot and Skye's powers are awesome (Raina's too, although I'm sad she got to see AoU too before the rest of us).
She used to be one of mine but the second she turned overpowered she became the ultimate Mary Sue and I have an issue with Mary Sues and Gary Stus (Klaus, Skye, Elena, Oliver, Felicity among others). Skye now is...pretty much the shows main character what I haven't been sold on. I wanted Coulson leading a team of equally important characters. FitzSimmons have turned rather unlikable to me (Gemma attempting to murder Ward last night? Ummmm....) and the last ones I somewhat enjoy are Coulson (because duh), May (because badass), Mockingbird (same as May), Hunter (as the comic relief part) and Ward (because he's the only one with some solid character evolution)
The Inhumans are making Skye worse for me, if she became full part of the team again and used her powers just as a weapon to help without being pimped up all the time this could turn out well but the more they focus on the origin of their powers I'm iffy on all of them.
I'm kinda hoping for the remnants of Ultrons army to slaughter the Inhumans....does sound sick but unlike the Inhumans I actually liked Ultron ;)
I am sick of people referring to Skye as a Mary Sue. She never has nor will ever be one.
Jemma's been through some trauma and while I don't like that she killed someone (Bakshi deserved it but still) in cold blood, she needs some serious help to deal with all the trauma that she's been burying for so long.
Someone bring in Andrew to help Jemma and Ward please. All of them (including Kara) need some therapy but those two the most.
I love every single main character and nothing's going to change my mind.
I love the inhumans (speaking of the community one), like it's their story that shows the flaws of SHIELD especially 'real shield'. They believe that because inhumans have powers they a major threat to society that should either be killed, experimented on, locked up or controlled. They are not a threat because they mean no harm to anyone. Besides everyones dangerous, like everyone on SHIELD are killers and in general everyone is capable of bad stuff. Why should the presence of powers that they were born with mean they are evil. They're not like the others who are enhanced with the intent to kill. The inhumans just want to be left alone. Especially Jiaying, Lincoln and Gordon and I love their relationships with Skye.
Cool art. Although doesn't tell us much. We know shield and inhumans will bump heads hard on the next 3 episodes. Jiaying will be in a tough spot now that her family isn't a secret anymore. Cal and Raina should cause a lot of trouble. Gonzales won't stop until he hunts all power people. I expect bodies will drops on both sides.
Ultimately I don't think Skye is a Mary Sue but to be fair to everyone's interpretation I personally think there is some truth to the concerns:
Taken from Urban Dictionary:
"A Mary Sue character is usually written by a beginning author. Often, the Mary Sue is a self-insert with a few "improvements" (ex. better body, more popular, etc). The Mary Sue character is almost always beautiful, smart, etc... In short, she is the "perfect" girl. The Mary Sue usually falls in love with the author's favorite character(s) and winds up upstaging all of the other characters in the book/series/universe."
* Skye is for the most part all of these things: smart, heroic, beautiful. But you can say that about most super hero inspired characters. It might help her case if Skye were to make a serious mistake more often than she does.
* You can argue that by a loophole there is no direct evidence to suggest that Skye was written by a certain author as a personal surrogate of sorts.
* Mary Sue characters are usually inserted into an existing narrative. Skye is an original character. This of course is also a loophole.
He didn't say anything resembling that they should be slaves. He said that they were created to be slaves and that they should remember this modest heritage.
I think its a lovely image. It invokes the sentiment of a scarred mother nature with the ominous SHIELD symbol breaking through juxtaposed with a conflicted Skye shown in SHIELD's colours.
No the inhumans are not shady maybe a few nutjobs but overall not a fat chance in hell will they make the subject of one of their future billion dollar movies into villians. I'm glad we are going to see more of them go dichen! I just hope they don't kill her again.
She verged on being one in the first season. But that had nothing to do with her abilities. What most people don't understand is that a Mary Sue is more a writing issue, and a lot of those issues were present in the writing for Skye in season one. Thankfully they did better this last season.
I think she is a Mary Sue Character, but that might not be a bad thing.
“Mary Sue” has been an insult for “unrealistic” female characters for quite a while, but “Mary Sue” is the absolute definition of a superhero. Angsty backstory? Orphaned? Super special powers? World-changing fate or destiny? More money and cool gadgets than you know what to do with? Everyone you’re even vaguely attracted to being attracted to you? On a female character, it’s ridiculous. On a male character, it’s iconic. Taken from http://feministfiction.com/2013/09/17/we-need-more-mary-sues/ when talking about the Black Widow and other female characters.
I think that the writers are also aware of the fact that she is a 'Mary Sue', I believe in one episode she said her orphanage name was Mary Sue Poots.
Here we go again with the Inhuman bashing. Still hate how much they're being misunderstood by certain people. Ridiculous. Anyway, I'm so excited to get more backstory on Jiaying since she's been a mystery up until this point. How did she get to Afterlife and become the leader of the Inhumans? What was her life like before she got captured by HYDRA? Hopefully we'll see the first time that she meets Cal. This art is definitely one of my favorites from the show. The style is very Greek esque. And I love that it depicts the mother/daughter relationship of Jiaying and Skye. Skye is going to have to make a tough decision in these last episodes...
I really like this one, simple yet meaningful. Looking forward to learning more about Jiaying, and certainly hoping for both team moments (talking about Skye) and team Jiaying moments. I imagine even May might shocked into being talkative if she finds out. I just REALLY hope they don't go down the route of killing Jiaying. I'd prefer something like Skye forbidden from Afterlife rather than that.
I suppose they could make this "Tribe" a loose cannon, because I'm really afraid either Shield goes nuts on them or they go nuts on Shield. That's the perfect option to force Skye into choosing a side. It wil be heart breaking if Skye looses what's she's always been looking for.
I totally am loving Gordon, there's something about him I find hot and irresistible. He's confident and got too much swag, I love him. Considering their history and heritage, I understand why inhumans want to be left alone, we humans have a nasty habit of destroying what we don't understand (including cutting things open in the name of science in order to further our own agenda, everyone else be damned) and they don't want to be used as weapons, caught in the middle of any war, that makes sense. Lincoln is still a pretty boy with barely a personality to speak of so I can't and don't hate him, sadly there's nothing endearing me to him. All in all I don't see these three as bad guys. Inhumans aren't evil, there are a few rotten eggs among them sure, but then so do the humans and I'm not calling the entire species evil.
Yeah, that's why I'm really hoping that the writers come up with something better than "Inhumans are EVIL". But the counter weight is they have to create the situation that drives Skye at least out of Afterlife if not back to Shield (I'm still hoping for something like her walking away, you could just imagine the scene of Coulson finding her badge on the desk.
Of course we still have to figure out what drives Bobbi and Hunter away, particularly as there's no only 3 episodes for them to even talk about what's happened.
The hole show was Skye's origin story as a superhero from the very first moment. So from that point of view the show just follows its narrative. By your definition nearly every superhero (for example Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch) is a Mary Sue, by the way Cal too.
The problem is that the definition of a Mary Sue and a Superhero is more or less the same. As you wrote the only significant difference is that Mary Sue's are usually newly integrated in stories. But that is the reason why Skye isn't a Mary Sue, as the show was her origin story right from the start.
Slight nitpick, but the redness of the art made me think at first that the woman highlighted in it was the mysterious redhead slated to appear this episode and apparently take a proeminental role in the next one, not Jiaying. :(
In terms of characters I can kind of see why, Skye moved a major step forward in being an agent in her actions, I doubt even Skye of 2.01 could have pulled that off. May, in terms of her interactions with Coulson and the tension there is no between them could have been why she was given the other lead figure.
But the sad reality is how is Skye going to end up with Shield (and that's where it will end up), so it's either death or Skye getting banned from Afterlife I'm afraid.
Regarding what is seen in the promo I think SHIELD will locate Afterlive and the Inhumans will leave the place as it's none of their permanent cities. As I see it, what will happen with Skye will depend on Jiaying's position in the inhuman society out of Afterlife. By now anything can happen, depending how AoU will influence both sides.
Wow, this is gorgeous. Reminds me of the May poster for "Melinda" - these two are probably my favorites so far. Jiaying looks like a Queen (and actually looks a lot like Dichen in this drawing, which many of the drawings in previous posters have lacked).
Now I'm going to scroll down and surely find a bunch of complaints about the fact that horrible Jeff Bell is still giving interviews, despite not having the same views about the show as certain fans do.
If Skye parts ways with her parents in the end, I really hope it's an amicable split. She doesn't need any more pain and her life-long search for her family ending in tragedy would bring plenty of it.
I have a feeling Raina could sway a group of Inhumans into causing trouble. The people who predicted that she will try to undermine Jiaying were obviously right given the ending of last week's episode, and it happening right after Cal warned Jiaying about Raina's manipulative nature was no coincidence. Raina's visions about everything that went down in Age of Ultron may somehow play into that, too.
What have they said or done so far that constitutes whining, cockiness or being d-bags? The fact that they're a race that wants to live in peace and not be locked up or murdered en masse by people like Gonzales?
I don't know if it qualifies as being a Mary Sue, but I think the show is running the risk of making her too awesome and capable to the point where the rest of the team will soon be unnecessary. In Season 1, every character had a specific skill set/designation (Coulson: leader and strategist, May & Ward: ass-kickers, Simmons: doctor and bio-chemist, Fitz: engineer, Skye: computer hacker). As of 2B, however, Skye is not only a hacker, but a bona-fide, May-level field agent (look at her fight scene from the latest episode) - after less than 2 years of training - AND a superheroine who could go toe-to-toe with half of the Avengers, judging by her power level.
It's getting to the point where the show will soon be more like The Flash or Arrow than a ensemble piece, with Skye and her little group of helpers who are nowhere near as capable as she is. And that's a problem. I don't dislike Skye, but I don't want her to eclipse everyone else, and that's where things are headed.
I know what you mean, but I won't worry too much. The only thing they added was making her a good fighter and the show can always use more of those. She will never be the strategist Coulson is, or a scientist like Fitz or Gemma, or a class A pilot like May. And she will never be as crazy as Ward.
In terms of the fallout of AoU, why do I get the feeling Coulson is going to end up getting some of the bame? I'm betting May will figure out fairly quickly what intel he got and then talked to Maria about. As a result of that (and blaming him for operational deaths already) I can see the potential of plenty of finger pointing towards him. Though the protocal should be cleared up anyway.
Wonder if knowing Fury is still around and kicking might change some of the Other Shield's views?
Me to but I'm really fearful that it won't. Her ending on good terms with Jiaying particularly means that she's going to remain conflicted, (not too mention all the fans who are less than happy) and questions remaining over her loyalty. I figure there has to be something (worse case either Cal or Jiaying dying) to drive her out of the Inhumans, given what press releases we've had. If the worse does play out, her relationship with Shield will be permantyl altered...
Why wouldn't they listen to someone who can see the future? This is the worst power she could have knowing how manipulative she can be. All the inhumans want is be left alone and safe. All she has to do is say she saw is Jiaying actions will put that at risk and then Jiaying is doomed. She should have listened skye warning.
I think Cal is dying. As much fun his character can be i don't see him going Mr hyde crazy and not being put down. Now i don't know if Skye or shield would be the one killing him. Skye started to understand him but if he went nuts and start putting innocent lives at risk i think she would stop him. After what Jiaying went through i like to think she won't/can't be killed but you never know. I think her relationship will be brokes with both sides.
Yeah it does look like that might be an option. I can see Skye getting blamed by the Inhumans for exposing them to pretty much everyone (not by her choice but that's not going to matter). If it is Shield that kills Cal, I can see that taking a while toget over (particularly as that and the attack on Afterlife would play into her fears about being hunted by Shield)...
This is a real concern. Quake is a character who has really strong powers. When i was watching aou one of my thoughts was how helpful she would be fighting ultron robots. She make a quake or whatever is that vibration thing she does with her hands that can level a forrest, she would destroy them really fast. Faster than most of the avengers. She is a good person and shield agent. Her character with control of her powers belongs on the avengers squad. This is why i hope someday they use her on one of the movies. She has such cool strong powers but since she is in a tv show, they have to be careful about her developing her powers or like you said, if they have a mission send her alone and she will handle everything now, except the engineer and biological part.. As much as i love seeing her using her powers she can't be that good so fast. They did 5 episodes with her strughling with her powers and now she had a few lessons and its showing major signs of improvement. On season 3 they will need to be careful with this.
You're probably right, but even if she doesn't have every single skill that everyone else has, I still fear she'll outshine them. On Arrow, Oliver isn't a genius hacker like Felicity and largely depends on her help, but he's still clearly the main star and all the others are there as support. I don't want AoS to essentially become Quake, with Coulson, FitzSimmons and May relegated to "Team Quake".
Yeah, the answer is not difficult to see but most of the avengers were nobodies before being cast. Marvel likes to give chance to unknow actors. Becoming an avenger is a natural progression for her character. I think Chloe is improving. She still young i really don't object they giving her a chance on the movies eventually. She doesn't need to lead the movie but a supporting role in a esemble movie would be cool. If they never use her would be a waste. She was an avenger on the comics. If they planning to use the defenders on Infinity War they sure can use Quake. The fact they made her an inhuman opened another oportunity for her on the inhumans movie. As for the fight scene, maybe they should have waited to do that one shot sequence later or use another character like May or Bobbi. Right now she can easily fight May and Bobbi. They are way more experienced fighters but with her powers not even May stand a chance.
That was a worry I had during the first season, but the second season spend so much time on the other characters and ensure that each of them got their own arc that I don't think anymore that this is a concern I should have.
Yeah, it's not inevitable for her to pop up in one of the movies like Infinity War or Inhumans eventually. They may wait a bit until she's had more time to gain experience as an actress before bringing her to the big screen but it could happen. I agree that she's improved, too. Adrianne Palicki also indicated that the Marvel head-honchos told her there was a possibility she'd appear in the movies.
Then Skye wouldn't be well seen in afterlife making her leave for good but i suspect shield won't be making good decisions and she won't end up well with them as well.
The only problems with Mockinbird is that as much interesting her character is i don't see them bringing her to the big screen as long as black widow/Scarlett is around. They have similar type of roles so if they can use Scarlett they will prefer her. Quake brings a totally different element to it. I always geek out when i see Skye using her quake powers on the tv so imagine how cool that would be on a movie scale? Chloe might be unknow but if they put her in any movie she would get a lot of fans fast because she is a interrsting character and has such cool powers. The MCU will keep expanding so I really hope eventually they find room for both Quake and Mockinbird on the big screen.
Yeah, I could certainly see Skye as an independent actor at the end of the season, with the first couple of episodes getting her back (most likely with the anti-power side of the Civil War heating up).
this is true skye did warn her in the episode called afterlife but she would not listen but all of a sudden when Cal says it she wants to listen to him
She knew Skye's judgement less than Cal's (who remmeber knows Raina a lot longer than Skye), not too mention it was clear that Skye had (understandable) hatred towards Raina.
LMAO at Jeff Bell trying to down play how sexist Marvel has been. They do better in their female portrayals in the TV realm sure, but that they haven't had a female led Marvel movie yet is not something you brush off with a comment like "oh but we've got good females on out show"... I'm sorry... no...
While I like the Mucha feel of the poster, Skye's portrait I feel is very clunky, both the illustration and the placement... it's throwing the design off balance...
Thank you, amigo. :) It's really starting to get tiresome... these people should at least get a new WORD to describe the Inhumans if they're going to keep badmouthing them (while extoling the virtues of one Grant Ward, of course).
Or be able to point to something that backs up their feelings, I mean we haven't seen anything massively concerning from the Inhumans. Yes Jiaying has other views than Shield, but that's just because they are different. As we've said, hopefully the writers won't blunt force the Inhumans as the "bad guys", just to make Shield the "good guys".
I imagine the scene with Gonzales and Skye is going to come as well (I've just had a bad thought about how Skye will take her relationship with May now that she's on the "council". Particularly if Shield does attack Afterlife (and worse case Jiaying gets killed), don't knoow how that's going to develop :(
Yeah, Jeff's answer to that one kinda stuck out like a sore thumb. It had little to do with the actual question he'd been asked, which gives you the feeling that he just wanted to get a "Don't we have tons of awesome female characters?!" comment in there somewhere.
That's exactly what it felt like... And with the backlash they've been getting over how Natasha was mistreated in AoU the timing also seems a bit suspicious.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I like this one a lot. Shit's definitely about to go down and I can't wait.

I love it. Every Agent of SHIELD art this season is killing it. I'm very happy. Kudos to all the artists.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry why should the inhumans be slaves? Sure they were created to be warriors but that was thousands of years ago, it means nothing now.
ReplyDeleteThis!

ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful and really amazing. Love it, they're making one hell of a job

As I see it, what will happen with Skye will depend on Jiaying's position in the inhuman society out of Afterlife. By now anything can happen, depending how AoU will influence both sides.
ReplyDeleteWe may not get as much in the way of sneak-peeks and the like right now, as the last eps seemed to be packed with delicious spoilery goodness
ReplyDeletesomething has to drive her back even if its not tell part two of S.O.S
ReplyDeletei be more worry about Raina saying anything to get the inhumans to listen
ReplyDeleteWow, this is gorgeous. Reminds me of the May poster for "Melinda" - these two are probably my favorites so far. Jiaying looks like a Queen (and actually looks a lot like Dichen in this drawing, which many of the drawings in previous posters have lacked).
ReplyDeleteNow I'm going to scroll down and surely find a bunch of complaints about the fact that horrible Jeff Bell is still giving interviews, despite not having the same views about the show as certain fans do.
If Skye parts ways with her parents in the end, I really hope it's an amicable split. She doesn't need any more pain and her life-long search for her family ending in tragedy would bring plenty of it.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing she's missing is a throne to sit on.
ReplyDeleteFor real, the Inhumans have done SO MANY shady things that this should become their theme song:

I have a feeling Raina could sway a group of Inhumans into causing trouble. The people who predicted that she will try to undermine Jiaying were obviously right given the ending of last week's episode, and it happening right after Cal warned Jiaying about Raina's manipulative nature was no coincidence. Raina's visions about everything that went down in Age of Ultron may somehow play into that, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat have they said or done so far that constitutes whining, cockiness or being d-bags? The fact that they're a race that wants to live in peace and not be locked up or murdered en masse by people like Gonzales?
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it qualifies as being a Mary Sue, but I think the show is running the risk of making her too awesome and capable to the point where the rest of the team will soon be unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteIt's getting to the point where the show will soon be more like The Flash or Arrow than a ensemble piece, with Skye and her little group of helpers who are nowhere near as capable as she is.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the fallout of AoU, why do I get the feeling Coulson is going to end up getting some of the bame? I'm betting May will figure out fairly quickly what intel he got and then talked to Maria about. As a result of that (and blaming him for operational deaths already) I can see the potential of plenty of finger pointing towards him. Though the protocal should be cleared up anyway.
ReplyDeleteWonder if knowing Fury is still around and kicking might change some of the Other Shield's views?
Me to but I'm really fearful that it won't. Her ending on good terms with Jiaying particularly means that she's going to remain conflicted, (not too mention all the fans who are less than happy) and questions remaining over her loyalty. I figure there has to be something (worse case either Cal or Jiaying dying) to drive her out of the Inhumans, given what press releases we've had. If the worse does play out, her relationship with Shield will be permantyl altered...
ReplyDeleteI just knew that you were going to post that at some stage...
ReplyDeleteWhy wouldn't they listen to someone who can see the future? This is the worst power she could have knowing how manipulative she can be. All the inhumans want is be left alone and safe. All she has to do is say she saw is Jiaying actions will put that at risk and then Jiaying is doomed. She should have listened skye warning.
ReplyDeleteI think Cal is dying.
ReplyDeleteYeah it does look like that might be an option.
ReplyDeleteThis is a real concern.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right, but even if she doesn't have every single skill that everyone else has, I still fear she'll outshine them. On Arrow, Oliver isn't a genius hacker like Felicity and largely depends on her help, but he's still clearly the main star and all the others are there as support. I don't want AoS to essentially become Quake, with Coulson, FitzSimmons and May relegated to "Team Quake".
ReplyDeleteYeah, the answer is not difficult to see but most of the avengers were nobodies before being cast.
ReplyDeleteThat was a worry I had during the first season, but the second season spend so much time on the other characters and ensure that each of them got their own arc that I don't think anymore that this is a concern I should have.
ReplyDeleteYeah, or say that Skye will bring doom to them or something along those lines...
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's not inevitable for her to pop up in one of the movies like Infinity War or Inhumans eventually. They may wait a bit until she's had more time to gain experience as an actress before bringing her to the big screen but it could happen. I agree that she's improved, too. Adrianne Palicki also indicated that the Marvel head-honchos told her there was a possibility she'd appear in the movies.
ReplyDeleteThen Skye wouldn't be well seen in afterlife making her leave for good but i suspect shield won't be making good decisions and she won't end up well with them as well.
ReplyDeleteThe only problems with Mockinbird is that as much interesting her character is i don't see them bringing her to the big screen as long as black widow/Scarlett is around.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I could certainly see Skye as an independent actor at the end of the season, with the first couple of episodes getting her back (most likely with the anti-power side of the Civil War heating up).
ReplyDeleteOMG yesss! Best comment ever XD *applauses to you Alex*
ReplyDeletemaybe hard to say at this point though
ReplyDeletethis is true skye did warn her in the episode called afterlife but she would not listen but all of a sudden when Cal says it she wants to listen to him
ReplyDeleteAny idea when the sneak peek will be on
ReplyDeleteShe knew Skye's judgement less than Cal's (who remmeber knows Raina a lot longer than Skye), not too mention it was clear that Skye had (understandable) hatred towards Raina.
ReplyDeleteLMAO at Jeff Bell trying to down play how sexist Marvel has been. They do better in their female portrayals in the TV realm sure, but that they haven't had a female led Marvel movie yet is not something you brush off with a comment like "oh but we've got good females on out show"... I'm sorry... no...
ReplyDeleteWhile I like the Mucha feel of the poster, Skye's portrait I feel is very clunky, both the illustration and the placement... it's throwing the design off balance...
yea and Raina you know did have coulson trap in that memory machine in season 1 along with a few other things she did
ReplyDeleteIts saturday and still no sneak peek. Damn!
ReplyDeleteThank you, amigo. :) It's really starting to get tiresome... these people should at least get a new WORD to describe the Inhumans if they're going to keep badmouthing them (while extoling the virtues of one Grant Ward, of course).
ReplyDeleteOr be able to point to something that backs up their feelings, I mean we haven't seen anything massively concerning from the Inhumans. Yes Jiaying has other views than Shield, but that's just because they are different. As we've said, hopefully the writers won't blunt force the Inhumans as the "bad guys", just to make Shield the "good guys".
ReplyDeleteI imagine the scene with Gonzales and Skye is going to come as well (I've just had a bad thought about how Skye will take her relationship with May now that she's on the "council". Particularly if Shield does attack Afterlife (and worse case Jiaying gets killed), don't knoow how that's going to develop :(
Where the f*ck is the sneak peek
ReplyDeletethey might not decide to do one this mainly cause were getting so close to season finale and don't wanna spoil anything
ReplyDeleteYeah, Jeff's answer to that one kinda stuck out like a sore thumb. It had little to do with the actual question he'd been asked, which gives you the feeling that he just wanted to get a "Don't we have tons of awesome female characters?!" comment in there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what it felt like... And with the backlash they've been getting over how Natasha was mistreated in AoU the timing also seems a bit suspicious.
