12 Monkeys brings its first season to a close with “Arms of Mine.” The episode is written by series creators Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett and is directed by David Grossman. There is a lot of pay off in this episode as much of the plot circles back to previous episodes. However, there are a couple of big questions that aren’t answered and a lot of balls thrown in the air which we’ll have to wait to fall when season two airs. Hopefully, Syfy won’t keep us waiting too long, though it’s not scheduled until 2016. In addition, Matalas and Fickett – who have provided many of the best episodes this season – will be replacing Natalie Chaidez as showrunners.
This episode is beautifully structured between 2015 and 2043 with much of the action running parallel in the two time periods. After last week, Cole (Aaron Stanford) is not happy with Aaron (Noah Bean). Cole and Cassie (Amanda Schull) attend yet another private Markridge function – just as they did in “Splinter.” They run into Jennifer (Emily Hampshire) who is happy to see Cole and still doesn’t like Cassie. Pay particular attention to what Jennifer is wearing in this episode. Cassie ends up in the red forest. Olivia (Alison Down) and Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) reach their end games. And Ramse and Cole are reunited.
In 2043, Deacon (Todd Stashwick) leads another assault against the facility. Stashwick is simply delicious as Deacon. Jones (Barbara Sukowa) takes desperate measures, and Whitley (Demore Barnes) proves his value again. I’m really hoping for more of both Stashwick and Barnes next season!
There is at least one major death in the episode and other lives hang in the balance. Look for not one but two standoffs. And we get to meet a character that we’ve heard a lot about but haven’t seen yet.
Here are a few dialogue teases:
“I don’t have time for your crazy bullshit!”
“Sometimes, science is literally like watching paint dry.”
“There are no straight lines.”
“They are lean but mean.”
“All of this is preordained, scripted by time, unmoveable. Because there is nothing more powerful than fate.”
“It’s a delicate balance, and it ends today.”
“Sometimes the choice isn’t even yours. It’s fate.”
“You’d do horrible things.”
“Atari.”
I hope that whets your appetite for the season finale! You won’t want to miss this episode as it brings the first season to a pretty satisfying conclusion – though you may be tearing your hair out over the wait for the second season… “Arms of Mine” airs on March 10 on Syfy at 9/8c.
Woooooow!!! I thought I couldn't be more excited about this episode but I was wrong!!! This preview is great, and now I'm scared about who will live or die, and what happens to Cole and Cassie, and Jones, and Aaron and Ramse... I won't survive neither the finale or the hiatus :(
ReplyDeleteYeah the more spoilers I read the more nervous I get. Good thing we only have to wait until tomorrow. Waiting is often the worst part.
ReplyDeleteThe hiatus is going to be brutal! I like the short season because it means the action can be fast, and we get great quality for all 13 episodes, but the hiatus is KILLER!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great episode!! Some really great jaw droppers... (or they were for me...)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will be for me too.
ReplyDeleteSo excited when I saw the notification! (bless the spoilertv extension!). I'm so happy it's tomorrow already, I can't take this waiting anymore (even though the wait for season 2 will be much longer).
ReplyDeleteThe CW is ridiculous!
ReplyDeletethey're not separated right, at the end?
ReplyDeleteNow I'm disappointed. Unless they had no other choice.
ReplyDeleteSomething tells me that they are. I knew all that shipper heaven in last episode will come with the price.
ReplyDeleteI replied to you in another post here but I guess you didn't see it. Check this out: https://twitter.com/CarlaDay/status/585814586093346819
ReplyDelete“I don’t have time for your crazy bullshit!” - Cole to Ramse
ReplyDelete“Sometimes, science is literally like watching paint dry.” - Johns
“Atari.” - Cole to Ramse
Of course, torturing your ex it's bonding two people like nothing else. Sorry, joking. Thank you for sharing. Now I'm and Ivan, I hope, can sleep better. But they can be separated at the end. But, wait, I'm so "good" at predicting.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you'll be disappointed...
ReplyDeleteYou're warm...
ReplyDeleteAll I will say is that you will love the beginning...
ReplyDeleteargh! but okay
ReplyDeletereally "crazy" to RAMSE? wouldn't it be to the ACTUAL crazy person: Jennifer?
ReplyDeletecliffhanger or closed but a door open?
ReplyDeletethank you VERY much!!!
ReplyDeleteBasically, I never thought I would. Epi looks so promising. But really thank you for letting us know that shippers is also gonna have their moments.
ReplyDeleteRed forest as a real forest or another drug-induced hallucination? Do they show the Traveler? Will Ramse die? Is Ramse the body - source of virus?
ReplyDeleteRamse IS The Traveler
ReplyDeleteCan you say same about the ending?))) Somehow I already feel empty without 12 Monkeys. It's gonna be long year...
ReplyDeleteRamse had been crazy the past couple of episodes imo
ReplyDeleteyeah but Jennifer's crazy is different kind of crazy so i'm going with Jennifer
ReplyDeleteUgh. The Traveler or the Witness? There was a discussion somewhere online and some users weren't sure.
ReplyDeleteoops i meant The Witness LOL but some people are still not sure? why?
ReplyDeleteOf the two, I would say poor Aaron is most likely to die than Ramsey, feel a little bad for him.He did a bad thing but he was driven to desperation from his love for cassie. Poor slob.2017 Cassie said her and Cole fought for two years so I don't think they'll be separated, as always questions will be answered as well as reopening new questions,I'm starting to get the hang of this show
ReplyDeleteThe problem is the long hiatus. I wonder if people will lose interest in 12 monkeys over that time period,
ReplyDeleteWhat did you like about it
ReplyDeleteThis is always my worry. No doubt they will marathon season 1 before season 2 airs to refresh people's memories and try to attract new viewers...
ReplyDeleteIs he?
ReplyDeleteThe writing really stands out for me with this show - especially how the action plays out in parallel in this episode. But there is one particular scene that I really loved - you'll have to come back for my review for that!
ReplyDeleteCan't give away the ending... ;)
ReplyDeleteAww, you're killing me Lisa! !
ReplyDeleteOk ok thank you: ) Do you believe the finale gives Cole and Cassie lovers a reason to wait for season 2!?
Definitely!
ReplyDeleteHmmmm I have a theory but won't jinx it. Lips are sealed. (And also if I'm wrong I won't have to admit it. lol :P)
ReplyDeleteThat is what I'm asking myself over and over again. Because I still have my doubts...
ReplyDeleteIt's already been hinted by someone else who saw the ending that it's a cliffhanger. Good thing we have Season 2.
ReplyDeleteThe show already revealed Ramse is the Witness. I don't know why some fans think otherwise. There has been nothing given by the writers to suggest he's someone else.
ReplyDeleteUsually I'm the one with all wrong theories. And, gosh, you were so right about hand holding. I'm was so wrong and never been happier about it.
ReplyDeleteAck you. Are you trying to say Ramse isn't the Witness and they made a mistake about that label? I'm going to have to throw a shoe at the TV if the writers go back on that. lol
ReplyDeleteThey could get separated but reunited in Season 2. Either way, I hope the writers realize they shouldn't keep those 2 apart for long.
ReplyDeleteHopefully not. Syfy tends to take a long break with all their shows. Being Human for example, was on during this time of year - Jan to March/April and that lasted 4 seasons. But it was on a Monday and had better ratings. :/
ReplyDeleteI analyzed that little promo scene so much I knew unless it was tampered with I had to be right.
ReplyDeleteI've gotten just as much wrong as I've gotten right. "Paradox" had a lot of spoilers so I was able to make a lot of solid predictions for that episode, but the finale is like top secret. The promotional photos reveal a few things, but very vaguely.
I hope fans will remain active. Posting stuff on social media like twitter, tumblr, yt, also brings new viewers.
ReplyDeleteYeah I hope so too. 12 Monkeys shares some fans with Dominion so at least hopefully those fans will continue to tweet about 12 Monkeys. I know I will try to when I get the chance.
ReplyDeleteIf your theory turn out to be true you are will tell us after, right?)
ReplyDeleteYes I will. I've done that the past couple episodes going "I knew it! I knew it!" or some form of that. :P
ReplyDeleteThis is a start

awesome picture, but man are things dreary. They were in a cool place and now they're forced to hide in a rag-tag motel
ReplyDeletedarn you! LOL
ReplyDeleteoh wow really?!
ReplyDeletedarn, but yeah it's defenitely good
ReplyDeletei really REALLY hope that they're not separated
ReplyDeleteCassie and Cole? LOL
ReplyDeleteThe fanfics? Yes. I already have 2 with them for 12 Monkeys theme week (a fan set the week up).
ReplyDeleteYeah I'll miss the library.
ReplyDeletenice
ReplyDeleteAlthough, my shipper junkie side still on high from last episode and probably will have another dose tonight but my heart us aching for these two. Can they catch a breath for a moment? Please writers let them take a break in season 2? They had been hurting constantly, physically and emotionally. When was last scene with not angsty circumstances between them? I can deal with it as long as they have each other to support them but it's also limited moments. They separated by the time and now when they in 2015 together (though, I wonder for how long),please, don't dare to separate them emotionally in season 2. And it's really almost over, season is almost over. Damn, it's so hard to accept the fact that we'll see new episodes of 12 Monkeys and Cole/Cassie only in 2016. Can anyone build a time machine now?)
ReplyDeleteTotally with you. But if that time machine is as painful as I think/know it is I think I can wait. lol
ReplyDeleteYeah you're right of course
ReplyDeleteWalking DEAD comes back season after season and I never understood its appeal and longevity, surely 12 monkeys is better right?
A better show doesn't always do better. Especially on a Friday night.
ReplyDeleteI still don't get why 2017 cassie couldn't tell Cole about what happened, she said she wanted to tell him everything,if it were of a personal nature how would it change his path, that's killing me
ReplyDeleteIt can be explained in show itself. But i think other explanation is simple: Season two isn't written, what she could tell him?)
ReplyDeleteOf course.we, the viewer know that but the supposition is in reference to the awareness of the characters' s situation, there are obviously things she can't tell Cole, I was just wondering why she seemed so emotional as she's telling him these things
ReplyDeleteIt's just, I'm a writer and I have some good guesses because I know what I would concoct if I was a writer on the show,it's exciting throwing around questions
ReplyDeletewould you throw in a make-out session with Cole and Cassie? LOL
ReplyDeleteYou mean the "gun training " Lol !!! DEFINITELY
ReplyDeleteDid you see that first scene between them,he carjacks her and she's practically swooning over him in minutes:) My script would have had them making out halfway though the season: )
But at the same time I can understand the importance of keeping them desperate longer because it'll make the anticipation and payoff that much more epic when it does happen:)
I'm sorry but wasn't it "I can't change path you on"? You implying that if she tell him that it can change something in the past that needs to be happen?
ReplyDeleteI said all along Ramse being The Witness was too predictable and was disappointed when he ended up being The Witness. However, I'm starting to think that he ISN'T and Cole was wrong. I bet tonight we will meet the real Witness. Perhaps Olivia's father?
ReplyDeleteYeh, I'm not the only one who thinks that.
ReplyDeleteMy impression is this, obviously the things Cole needs to do in order to change the outcome of cassie' s and the world's fate needs to happen and with regard to his mission,no, nothing should change, my curiosity is solely about their relationship not the monkeys, red forest or the plague
ReplyDeleteJust curious
As a writer it's fun to watch how the writers of twelve monkeys have concocted this web of theories and intrigue, and imagine what I might have done differently or not
ReplyDeleteShe was emotional about seeing him, not to mention she was dying. I still think she has implied mission and plague mostly. Though she has hinted and personal aspects. Her calling him by first name and some of her phrases. They obviously grew closer. Maybe, she wanted to share something about it also. But there are was more important topics and so little time.
ReplyDeleteI think this particular discussion started about 4 weeks ago so it was before the reveal.
ReplyDeleteThe discussion I mentioned started weeks ago when it was only a speculation.
ReplyDeletewait, does Cassie have a gun?
ReplyDeleteTechnically, the writers never confirmed anything so they wouldn't go back on anything it's only based on people guessing he's they never used the word Witness Olivia only ever called him Traveler.
ReplyDeleteLisa, I need there to be a lot of Cole and Cassie scenes I've been waiting for it all season.
ReplyDeleteAmong other doubts I still can't explain why Ramse as a witness needed drugged Cassie and especially the red forest thing to communicate with her. I think the witness is from another time, obviously. And drugs with Olivia verbal help creates a some sort of channel with him. Makes me think the witness is not in 2015 at the moment.
ReplyDeleteProtection since they're on the run?
