The Vampire Diaries - The Downward Spiral - Review
15 Mar 2015
Reviews Vampire Diaries VMThis episode was utterly fascinating, mainly because we got to see what no-humanity Caroline is like, and quite a complex, amusing, worrisome creature she is! Meanwhile, Damon and Bonnie had their first major falling out since their friendship began, as Kai dropped beguiling hints about Mama Salvatore's origin story. "The Downward Spiral" managed an intriguing dichotomy by examining two characters - Caroline and Bonnie - recovering from harrowing ordeals and both forever changed by those experiences and trying out new versions of themselves. How others reacted to those changes was fascinating as well.
"I turned off my humanity. I didn't turn into an idiot." Indeed, no-humanity Caroline was an impressive marvel to observe, embracing every opportunity to drop a hilariously on point quip or indulge in her sexy party-going ways while being perfectly blunt with her friends about her intentions and demands on them. In fact, when Caroline told Elena she just wants a year without humanity to do what she pleases, without killing anyone, and all she asks is that no one attempts to bring her back before she's ready...I have to say, I thought that sounded fair enough. Would Caroline have been able to control herself to that extent, without spilling innocent human blood, for a whole year? That's arguable, and surely part of Stefan's reason for being unwilling to wait and see if Caroline could keep her vow...though his inability to deal with being without the real Caroline for that length of time was probably a factor, too.
The scenes between Caroline and Stefan this week were excellent, and showed that while their potential romantic relationship may have seemed a little forced at the beginning of the season, the bond they share is really a deep and complex one worthy of exploring in the amount of detail this episode does, and promises that subsequent episodes will continue exploring. Aside from Stefan's somewhat juvenile (albeit adorable) declaration "I like you," his speech explaining his feelings for Caroline and asking her to come back to him was really touching. And Caroline's reaction of immediately launching into bloody vengeance for his trying to get her to flip the switch back on before she was ready showed a couple of important factors. Firstly, she's well aware that Stefan is capable of succeeding in getting her to change back, and she was already wavering a tiny bit on his first attempt. And for someone who's supposedly an amoral being incapable of caring about anything, Caroline seemed to expose a myriad of feelings in the wake of Stefan's tender words...anger, resentment and spite, beneath which a vulnerability flickered. While Ripper Stefan managed to pass himself off with a smooth veneer of cockiness and casual lack of feeling, Caroline's more volatile version of inhumanity is thoroughly unpredictable. It feels like she could turn on a dime and show her softer side or go totally dark and start killing people left and right at any moment, with zero warning.
Since Stefan betrayed her request to be left alone, Caroline retaliated by compelling Liam to perform surgery on poor pawn-like Sarah Salvatore, chirpily reminding Stefan and Elena that she'd warned them of the consequences of hassling her. That is actually completely true, though it was hard to feel prepared for the level of remorseless and relentless violence Caroline was ready to inflict upon Sarah. Incidentally, the way Liam was used in this episode was awesome, a near-meta acknowledgement of how completely pointless his character turned out to be, with the writers letting him succumb to being a ditzy source of comic relief. I also absolutely loved all of Caroline's funny comments, and the contrast between her enjoyably sassy attitude and the real threat of her state of mind.
By the end of the episode, although Elena managed to find and stop Liam (in a relatively Elena-light episode, her swift move of breaking Liam's wrists to halt his removing Sarah's heart was fantastic), Caroline had already frightened Stefan enough to convince him to switch off his humanity in exchange for her sparing Sarah's life. This sets up such an intriguing situation. Obviously, if Caroline knows that Stefan is capable of getting her to change back to her normal self, by getting rid of his humanity, she has prevented this brilliantly. Yet also, now Caroline has united herself and Stefan in a way that lets her continue to behave as if she doesn't need him emotionally, yet teams her up with him all the same. Part of me questioned if Stefan was faking turning off his humanity, which would have been a cool twist as well, but it doesn't look that way from the preview for next week's episode.
"Coming back to life is complicated. Trust me, I've done it before." While Elena and Stefan struggled with the emergence of the new Caroline, Bonnie was feeling rather transformed as well once she returned from the 1994 prison world. Even as she enjoyed a warm reunion with Elena (and a chuckle-worthy one with Caroline!), Bonnie couldn't quite acclimate to the real world, seeming to find champagne hard to swallow and experiencing a quicker-than-usual temper. After the intense trauma she endured, it's easy to see why Bonnie would have a short fuse, and it's also fun to see her show off her badass side, such as quipping to the creepy guy at the rave, "I can't help it, I'm hot," after burning him to halt his advances. Yet I wonder if this is merely a completely understandable reaction to everything she's been through, or if there are also physical, more complicated consequences to having been in the prison world for so long.
I hated to see Bonnie and Damon having such a sad and terrible turn in their friendship after their new bond made them both so happy. I was even hoping that Damon would find it in himself, just this once, to put someone else's (someone whose name is not Elena) feelings above his own agenda, and he almost got there, but couldn't quite resist the need to find out about his mother. Of all motives for Damon to force Bonnie to confront Kai, this is certainly one of the only ones we could sympathize with at all, but it still hurt to see how betrayed she felt by Damon when Kai showed up, though Damon paid the price as Bonnie later made him experience all the agony she did while in the prison world.
"Congratulations! Everything you know about your mom is wrong." Speaking of Kai, his continued presence as a still-quippy, yet seemingly reformed villain character feels like a fantastic baddie going out with a whimper instead of a bang in a disappointing way. However, he was useful in revealing some big facts about Lily Salvatore, ones that cut Damon to the core. The belief that their mother was an ordinary human being who died a natural human death so many long years ago was one of the few aspects of normalcy and certainty in Damon and Stefan's lives. Having that stripped away is rough enough, never mind finding out that Lily was a) a vampire who faked her own death, and b) a brutal ripper who had to be put away in the 1903 prison world by the Gemini coven to prevent yet more deaths at her hands. As disturbing as this is to Damon, I can only imagine how hard it's going to hit Stefan, who struggles with his own ripper tendencies - when he comes back to himself after this latest no-humanity romp, that is.
And in Enzo's subplot...things proceeded much more smoothly and entertainingly this week. Due to Caroline's happening by in the midst of Enzo's machinations with Sarah, this part of the storyline felt much more attached to everything else that's happening, instead of like a weird tangent as it has felt in previous episodes. I have to say, the removal of Matt's involvement, and finally just getting to the Enzo/Sarah interactions, was a major improvement as well. It was even interesting to see Enzo rebuff Caroline's advances, remarking that it's not as much fun when she's not herself. I like how Enzo was thrown off a little by seeing someone he's only known as purely good acting out and behaving more like he usually does. Caroline was able to discern that Stefan must have instilled a lack of interest in vampires in Sarah, explaining Sarah's blasé response to Enzo's "I'm a vampire" reveal. Serves Enzo right! Let's see where this is leading...maybe it will surprise us by being better than expected.
In closing, I have to include a list of Caroline's best quotes from this episode, because she was on fire!
-“Oh Bonnie, how we all just missed your commentary.”
-Liam: "Caroline Forbes, the girl from the swimming hole."
Caroline: "Liam! The boy I forgot existed!"
-"But you have an accent! Anything you say is automatically fascinating."
-"I compelled a student to perform surgery on Stefan's niece and you found a way to make this about you? God, you truly have a gift, Elena."

A+ direction Ian-Loved every single minute of it.I have to give it up
ReplyDeletefor the amazing cinematography this episode-every scene was wonderfully
shot-caroline has never looked better & more hotter before now!
Now onto the episode itself-
1.Caroline-Another
episode, another slay for Candice. She was simply marvellous this
episode.I always knew she was a good actress but she truly proved her
mettle with this one! This version of caroline can stay as long as
possible-the fact that she calculated her every move meticulously and
using her brain unlike what we've seen until now was fun.She even called
on elena about her incessant need to make everything about her-Pure
gold!I'm really surprised she used liam instead of eating him.
2.Stefan-It
was fairly evident from the beginning that he would flip his humanity
switch by the episode end,so that wasn't a surprise.However-emotion less
caroline & ripper stefan can be a deadly combo-so looking forward
for it.Who knows-maybe this is what was needed for me to jump the
steroline train!
3.Bonnie-Her outburst towards damon at the end was
so heartbreaking.I loved her phone call to jeremy at the end.Poor damon
had no idea she was struggling so much and unknowingly made it worse!Kai
better watch out-who looked yummy today BTW-that coat and facial
hair-woof!
4.Damon-It was tragic when he learned her mother wasn't in
the coffin all this time and everything he knew about her was a
complete lie.Add ripper to the list-poor him!How will he tell his
brother about his mother now?
5.Enzo-Sarah-Enzo rejected caroline-Okay,didn't expect that!Still waiting for his storyline to make some sense, maybe soon!
Favorite quote-1.Caroline to Liam-The guy who i totally forgot existed-Ouch!
2.Bonnie-Can't help it,i'm hot! Or,The next i see you,i'll melt your face off! Damn,You go girl.
I love that we see most stuff the same Virginia. Your reviews are always such a good read.
ReplyDeleteThe episode was much better than I expected it to be. At this point the only thing that could make Caro's humanity less story even remoetly better is Klaus stopping by for an episode (unlikely but still that would be some neat scenes). I agree that Liam was used very well and would even like him to stay, he is a better M Donavan than Donavan himself.
I like how messed up Bonnie was and how they played this PTSD especially with Damon unknowingly pushing her over the edge. Bonnie liked thw rush of power and control and it will be interesting to see how this will play out in the long run.
Can't wait next week to see how things will progress and what game chamger will make me die for the next 4 weeks.
Thanks for the review Virginia. It can't be easy to review a show that was so intense and full of plot.
ReplyDeleteHowever, it doesn't seem quite fair to say that Damon couldn't put Bonnie's welfare above his own agenda. He wasn't there when Kai did his worst to her. Although she told Damon she never wanted to hear Kai's name again, he just didn't realize - probably couldn't - how deeply distressed Bonnie actually was, and he gave priority to his mom. I can only imagine how bad Damon must have felt when he realized he had unintentionally hurt her. Then he got hit with a double whammy when he found out the horrible truth about his mom. Damon has never been so openly emotional, so unraveled. Very powerful stuff from both of them.
The acting and the photography in this episode were so extraordinary. The atmosphere literally crackled with the sparks these extremely talented actors gave off. You recapped the episode so very well but didn't mention who got those performances from the cast, and created some really stunning and original visuals along the way: neophyte director Ian Somerhalder, aka Damon. It's so exciting to see a new facet of a person's talent revealed.
Thanks! Awesome points, and I totally agree about Kai...he's always looked good, but wow, his latest look is the best yet. I liked pretty much everything in the episode, although the Bonnie and Damon part made me sad, it was amazingly well done. Caroline was totally amazing as well. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) I would definitely take Liam over Matt any day of the week...he was absolutely hilarious in this episode, if unintentionally on his part, haha. I so wish we could have some Caroline and Klaus scenes too, though I agree it's not likely. That would be so awesomely complicated. I was expecting the intensity from the Caroline plot but was also impressed by the Bonnie scenes - can't wait to see where all of this leads in the next episode.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Wonderful analysis of the Damon and Bonnie situation in this episode...I felt so conflicted, feeling bad for both of them, and sad that they had to fall out like that. Ian did a fantastic job directing, and it was so nice to see that after how cutely excited he was about it on social media leading up to it!
ReplyDeletegood review but
ReplyDeleteCaroline's no humanity just isn't working for me.. I guess I'm in the minority
here.......because not even half way through the ep.. they had me hoping they'd.... anybody..... would just stake her ass... she got on my nerves to the bone
Thanks :) I understand your point of view. I did feel wary at another character flipping the switch, but I'm liking where the story is going so far.
ReplyDeleteI love what they're doing with Caroline, but it bothers me why they're doing,to push a couple, I think it is rigged.
ReplyDeleteHowever, it's always good to see RipperStefan, I love sarcastic Paul, is one of the reasons why I miss Silas.
Ha, yes, I do enjoy seeing the sarcastic version of Stefan as well! Paul plays wry humor quite effectively :)
ReplyDeleteI liked this episode. The part with Damon and Bonnie was so sad, I have been a Delena fan for a long time but I ship these two I like them together I wonder if he is going to go thru some type of depression and some people think that her and Kai should be together prob a love triangle if it was up to Julie. I like Enzo and Sara but then again I have always liked Enzo I think he is gorgeous and at one time I liked him and Caoline and I do like Stephan and Caroline and I wonder if he really turned off his humanity or is this all a plan. And there is going to be another hiatus.
ReplyDeleteThank you too! I know exactly what you mean about Ian before the airing! I follow him, and I remember laughing and thinking, "He's so excited - he's just like a little kid!". After the episode aired I wished so much I could have told him, "You did good, kid!".
ReplyDeleteThis show used to be so much better and so plot driven...Now its all about bringing back the old characters and repeating the same plotlines...There are hardly any major changes in the cast and no new mythology...nothing that threatens the vampire life...
ReplyDeleteI really liked the chemistry between Klaus and Caroline. He really pulled out something different out of her, a strength and smartness that we didn't saw that often with her.
ReplyDeleteBommie being kick as* is something the sgow really needs. Kat is a great actress and has the right skills to pull of this PTSD.
Can't wait to see how she and her new justice sense will be involved in the show and her attitude towards Mama Salvatore and Kai.
I tuned in to see how Somerhalder did in his directorial debut. He did an exceptional job, and his castmates (particularly Accola and Graham) brought their A games for him. As far as the storyline goes, the less said the better.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on all counts!
ReplyDeleteAnother hiatus, ay? Just what we need -- not, lol! Looks like the next ep is airing on March 19 but then we have to wait until April 16 for the following one. Too long! :)
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm enjoying Season 6 a lot, I do agree that they should bring some more mythology and more major changes that would really shake things up. I'm hoping the Mama Salvatore plotline will bring some of that excitement back into the mythology and happenings.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on Ian's direction and the awesome performances from Kat and Candice, at the very least! :)
ReplyDeleteI know that this is a really late comment but...I have been bashing Liam pretty hard in my comments and feel honor bound to amend my opinion of him somewhat. After watching 6-16 at least 8x I want to say that under Ian's direction I saw Liam differently. Not that he isn't still a character meant to serve the plot, but his scene with Stefan where he talked about "making out" with Caroline was actually cute and funny and very well acted. Then, when he was hurting Sarah against his will because of Caroline's compulsion - I know this sounds weird because it was an awful thing - he showed a kind of manic horror under duress that bordered on his breaking into hysterical laughter. I guess I'm trying to say he was horribly funny! That's what a good director can get out of an actor - bring out the best he has.
ReplyDeleteAgreed - I was surprised and delighted with how well Liam worked in this episode, mainly as comic relief but also as a pawn of Caroline's. I hated Liam earlier in the season, but now he has the potential to be an enjoyable recurring character (until he dies, which seems inevitable!).
