The Vampire Diaries - A Bird in a Gilded Cage - Review

This was an excellent episode, rewarding in having so many complex and surprising facets that left the viewer with plenty to ponder by the end of the hour.  Speaking of that ending, it was probably the only part of the episode I didn't like!  But we'll get to that.  Everything that led to it - the scary-sexy-funny rollercoaster of Caroline and Stefan's decent into inhumanity; Damon and crew hopping over to 1903's prison world to retrieve Mama Salvatore; Bonnie's face-off with Kai; and even the Enzo/Alaric subplot were all highly enjoyable.

"You are an embarrassment to humanity-free vampires everywhere."
While a little sliver of me was hoping that Stefan had faked flipping his switch, he's back to his bad ol' humanity-free self.  While Caroline carefully attempted to micromanage her every move and stick to her collegiate routine, such as a well done and hilariously self-congratulatory audition for the school musical, and avoiding any spilt blood that could come back to haunt her later, this only irritated Stefan.  Since she's responsible for his inhumanity, he feels that Caroline should have to surrender to chaos as much as he is inclined to.  It was too funny when Caroline tried to retaliate for Stefan's decapitation of her drama teacher by....sabotaging his motorcycle.  But even after a hard-working Caroline managed to stop Stefan from murdering Alaric and Enzo, who were trying to round them up, she was still susceptible to Stefan's seductively evil influence.  Finally, Caroline succumbed to her bloodlust and her lust for Stefan himself, as the two shared some steamy scenes.  As exciting and fun as this storyline is, there's no doubt that it's going to be super-awkward for Stefan and Caroline when they get their humanity back and have to deal with the aftermath of their actions.  How many more innocents will fall victim to their wicked games, and how are Stefan and Caroline going to feel about having had their first time together while humanity-free?  I wonder how much longer the two of them will remain like this, and what the ramifications will be of this immoral spree of theirs.
"Hello, Mother."  Lily Salvatore is simply fascinating, and I'm really enjoying learning more about her.  Annie Wersching combines a dainty, Edwardian sweetness with an undercurrent of angst and unpredictable volatility in a way that is truly compelling.  This conflict of elements within the character was highlighted brilliantly as she had to deal with Damon's disdainful attitude towards her once he traveled to her prison world to bring her home so that she can convince Stefan to flip his switch back.  Everything about this part of the episode was superb, from Elena's funny remarks ("To meet the woman who gave birth to the two epic loves of my life? Me."), to Damon's clear discomfort and vulnerability masked by sarcasm, to the utterly chilling reveal of the dried-out group of mummified vamps that Lily considers her "family."

I'm sure that I am forgetting some key detail here, but how is it possible that there is so little blood left in the 1903 prison world for Lily and her cronies?  I mean, even if she had drained all the local slaughterhouses one day, the day would just start over again at midnight, restocking the blood sources.  Or she could go a little further out to get more blood.  Is the 1903 prison different from the 1994 one in this respect?
Anyway, I'm suspicious of Lily's claims that her vamp pals volunteered to let her have all the blood.  What did she do to make them so loyal to her?  Maybe she's some kind of incredibly charismatic figure in that way, but I tend to doubt she's telling the whole truth.  Whatever the case, it was creepy as hell when one of the crusty vampires zeroed in on the marooned Kai at the end of the episode!  Speaking of which...

"I would rather die of cholera than spend an afternoon with you."  Wow, this episode was replete with moments to make any BonKai fan happy.  I loved the push and pull between these two, as Kai, even in his relentless pleas of apology and begging for forgiveness, revealed that he's far from totally redeemed by getting too intense about his own selfish needs.  Bonnie's had enough, and the new her is fine with taking bloody vengeance on Kai for his brutal treatment of her during their time together in the 1994 prison world.  Bonnie was so fierce while tearing into Kai for his previous behavior, crying out that she'd nearly been driven to suicide by his actions.
As awesome as Kat Graham is, Chris Wood is providing a perfect balance.  He's so wonderfully nuanced in portraying Kai's mixture of good and bad, and the strangeness of that combination, as well as his particular fixation on Bonnie and gaining that impossible forgiveness from her.  I know I've made it clear in previous reviews that I have found Kai's switch from all-out villain to conflicted soul seeking redemption to be an underwhelming  transition, but this was the first episode where it really just worked for me.  As much as I totally side with Bonnie and resent every horrible thing Kai's done, something about seeing the look on his face when he was left behind in 1903 was bizarrely heartbreaking.  I cannot wait to see what will happen for Kai next and how the hell he's going to get out of his current predicament, as well as what's next for the slightly unhinged Bon Bon.

Elsewhere in the episode...Jo and Alaric had some huggably adorable conversations about potential baby names and Ric's tendency to rush headlong into trouble with little concern for his own well-being.  Jo had a point every time, from noting that no one named Alaric should be allowed to name another human, to reminding her fiancé that he has a family now, and he needs to prioritize his safety in a new way.  Enzo had asked for Ric's help in capturing Stefan and Caroline, since he can't really avenge himself on a Stefan who couldn't care less about anything.  But...what's the point of all that again, Enzo?  Alaric seemed uniquely able to alert Enzo to this issue, and then Enzo himself acknowledged that he's growing tired of his vendetta against Stefan, confessing as much to Sarah.  But if Enzo was sincere in his new leaf turning, why did he mention the last name "Salvatore" to Sarah? Is this just the beginning of a subtle new twist in his evil plotting?  I must say that Enzo did seem genuinely concerned about Sarah's safety for her own sake, and she seems to be growing on him, to whatever extent he wants to admit that to himself.  This subplot continues to go from pointless to a little more intriguing.

That ending! The cure?!  Again?!  Ugh.  I really feel like Season 4 explored the cure in a thorough way that was brought full circle by Katherine getting it and being forced to deal with her own mortality.  We don't need the cure coming back to make Damon feel guilty and paranoid about whether he should offer it to Elena, and whether she'd rather be human and mortal, or live forever with him, and so on.  Elena has grown into being a vampire in such a satisfying way that I have no desire to see her human again.  It feels like going backwards to me.  I know that plenty of fans think a human Elena is endgame, but I've never been for it.  I guess we'll see where this is leading soon enough!  Perhaps I'm jumping to an incorrect conclusion, and the reappearance of the cure will lead to some cool new development.

Speaking of that last scene, there was something really weird about the way Bonnie was just standing there while Damon and Elena were making out, without saying anything until Damon saw her.  Something about Bonnie is certainly off lately, and this particular moment was unsettling.

  1. I love vampire Elena and could't wait in season 4 for someone else to take the cure, if they're going to play this card again...boring. This show has a tendency to repeat storylines and going back to what they think worked before, bringing back dead characters and things we thought were lost like the cure.

    ReplyDelete
  2. I totally agree...I'm trying not to assume the worst, but I'm really not thrilled for the cure to be coming back at this point. I'll take characters coming back from the dead over the cure any day.

  3. Great review as always!

Bringing back the cure is an interesting twist! The desire for a human life is slightly tormenting all of the main characters and it gives the rest of the season a really game changing status.

In S04 I was so certain Damon would get it and Katherine using it was a complete surprise. But this could really be the time when Damon gets the cure and maybe Bonnie turns into a Vampire, as Kai's revenge. Maybe they'll use the cure on Lily, who knows.
I was fan of the cure giving the characters a lot of inner search and let us find out much more about them, while the actual cure search was quite the drag.
This wait will be a huge torment, 4 weeks without VD.

  4. Thanks! Yes, I'm disappointed we have another hiatus to get through. If Lily got the cure, would she just age rapidly and die like Katherine did? If that rule goes for all really old vampires, it's too bad. The one character I really wanted to get the cure was Rebekah, as her longing for a human life was so sincere.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I think she wouldn't. Katherine started rapidly aging when Silas drained her blood, before that she just was spoiled and couldn't handle being human again. She never was a good Human.
Rebekah would completely deserve the cure. Great idea. Maybe a way to finally conclude her storyline. But who knows if she wants to turn now that she lived a human life for some time.

Overall I'm intrigued how they will handle this cure storyline, and if a TO crossover comes out of it that would be great!

  6. Aha, that's right; I forgot about Silas draining Katherine's blood. And yes, now that Rebekah is in this new body, who knows when or if she's even going to go back to her old one? Maybe giving Lily the cure would be a good solution to her Ripper temptations, as I totally don't trust that she's reformed. As long as Elena doesn't get it, I'll be happy, heehee.

    ReplyDelete
  7. i think Rebekah will DEFINITELY will get back in her body

    ReplyDelete
  8. I think Elena is the only one who is certain to not get the cure but will get the most buzz about it.
Best solution give it to Klaus and turn all his Vampires human as well and make VD about Enzo and Lily's love story ;-)

  9. i didn't see that last Bonnie moment as weird i thought it was funny but hmm maybe you're right. I hated that they made Kai sane and a semi-good guy, because when i saw Kai lkeft behind i got so pissed at Bonnie for leaving him there

    ReplyDelete
  10. someone made a point that while Lily may not seem all Ripper, it's because she hasn't been around live human blood for over a century. That it's like an alcoholic bring in a dry world for hundreds of years and then steps into a bar

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hope so! I know Claire Holt is onto other things, but I would love to see her come back eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It could have been funny, but I think it just went on a beat too long with Bonnie just standing there with an odd look on her face. I might need to re-watch that part and reanalyze! :) I did feel bad for Kai despite everything when he was left behind.

  13. I wish they would have dropped the "Enzo hates Stefan Revenge". tbh I love Enzo and I hate this storyline. I thought this would have been all over in 5x19 when Enzo "killed himself" but no...this has been going on for soooo long and I don'T get it and I hate that because of this people hate Enzo more and more, I wish they would change his story line and then for once I would really enjoy Tvd again because beside of this I really loved the last episodes and I am actually looking forward for the next :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm also anti the Enzo vs Stefan plotline. Even if it's not over quite yet, Enzo definitely showed a bit more depth in this week's ep, something I hope will continue.

  15. Lily and her freaks is a rip off of the tomb vamps in S1 and the cure was theme in S4/5. I truely wonder how Julie Plec thought this might be a good and fresh idea (doesn't she say in interviews that the show still has fresh ideas? lol try again lady)
As for Steroline.... well I think almost every couple on this show is toxic and abusive but theses two used their biggest fears against each other and somehow destroyed a part of each other in the progress.
I think Stefan will get the cure from 1994 and since 1903 also has a cure they will get it for Damon and Defan will actually get their endgame.
Btw wasn't Kai able to suck out the vampirism out too since its magic? Why need the cure then?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Lily storyline is very intriguing. I loved the moment in which Lily tells Damon that the creepy vampires are her family and Damon answers her that Stefan is his and he will do everything it takes to save him. Yay, Defan!!!
I've always said that Steroline is much better as friends than as a romantic relationship but the writers have made their decision and I'm resigned with it. But I think it's horrible that the first time Stefan and Caroline had sex, both of them were humanity-free. And yes, you're right, that's going to be weird.
I agree with each one of your words about the cure. It feels as if Julie Plec was recycling a storyline that was already annoying in season 4.

    ReplyDelete
  17. oh the dreaded cure. I can see it going one of three ways:
    1. Elena takes it for whatever reason.
    2. they force it on ripper Lily.
    3. Caroline gives it to Stefan to make up for what she did to him

  18. interesting and yeah i hated feeling bad for Kai but i did

  19. Not as strong installment as the previous one but pretty decent regardless.
    Positives-
1.I loved Lily this episode. Her entry was poised and with commanding screen
presence befitting such important character. Can't wait to see her
ripper mode along with stefan. This would be fun!
2.Bonnie was badass again, the writers weren't kidding when they said she would
be changed completely after she returns. The scenes between her and kai
    were terrific.
3.Kai is left in the 1903 prison world, for now and i'm
quite okay with that.I can't wait to find out what will happen to him
now.A predictable but satisfying move from the writers.
4.Enzo is becoming less annoying by every episode.I'm still not sure why would he
drop the bomb on the salvatore identity in front of sarah if he was
trying to get her out of this mess especially now when stefan is in
    rippah-mode.Once a dick,always a dick!LOL!I loved his scenes with alaric
    this episode.
4.This version of stefan is so much more fun than
brooding, normal stefan. The chemistry between stefan and caroline is
    spectacular.More of them,please!

    Now the negatives-
1.The hookup will create major problems for steroline down the line,so i'm not a fan this happened at this time!
2.Not again with this CURE storyline-i thought we were done with that,i guess not.
3.I expected elaborate FB scenes of lily of her ripper days-i have no idea why they didn't show that!
4.Not happy with Alaric's storyline this season-i'm happy that he's going to be a father and all that but still.....
5.And where on earth are Matt & Tyler-Looks like the writers forgot them completely. What are they doing amongst this chaos?
Now,we have to wait again for this hiatus to be over.Urgh!

  23. This pic was 2 weeks ago,so as we know it takes 9-11 days to shoot each episode,i'm guessing 3-4 days ago episode 21 started shooting.

  24. Ok, thank you. I had missed that pic.

  25. Julie said when her and Kevin started TVD, they knew they wanted to vamp Elena at some point and they knew they needed to make a cure for her. Then they ended up planning on giving the cure to Damon, then changing it to Katherine after everyone predicted Damon (since Damon was cured in the novels).

I think either Elena will get it or Stefan will get this one and Damon will end up with the cure from 1903. Either way I think the show has to have a Damon/Stefan endgame and Elena going her own way.

I don't hate dark Steroline that much (I hated them more earlier on this season), but I think once they get their humanity back they need to end things and realize they were terrible for each other and brought out the worst in each other. Stefan would never have turned his humanity off like that when he was with Elena. He fought so hard against it in Season 3.

  26. Is Kai now dead?
I am kinda feeling Kai and Bonnie together....he is adorable....and deranged! So not sure if it should actually happen....but ....

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think its safe to say,he is stuffed.ie his a blood doll for all 5 vampires down there, he has no bennet blood to use to get out and no ascendant to try anyway. Ive also not seen him in any future spoiler photos.

Virginia: Perhaps Bonnie secretly likes to watch?.. perhaps she was hoping to be asked to join in? :)

On the cure front: not surprised at all. As soon as I heard the island get a mention earlyon I just knew it was coming in. I have a feeling it might be Caroline to get it or as likely Lilly. Elena and Damon want to spend Eternity with each other so unless one of them is forced to take it because of (insert random plot contrivance) thenit wont be either of them.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Did not feel sorry for him at all. Must have my humanity switch turned off. Got what he deserved (which does not happen often in the Vampire Diaries)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Does anyone else think that it wasnt random at all that Lily got fed Vampire Blood while dying? Its the Vampire diaries, the shows where even the most tenous of story links get built upon. Its not all unlikely that this was another case of planned vampirisim.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yeah, I am in agreement with you .... this was TPTB's way of getting Kai off the show, and should the new pilot not work out, he still has a way to get back....

The cure, I too postulated that it would be used for someone....not Caroline or Lilly (although it would be good for them) but for Sara Salvatore....it is just a get out free card for TPTB....if we think about it. cause they have kinda written themselves into a bit of a narrow space.

Ah well, I am happy for the actor playing Kai that he got the new show and all, but I am sad that he is leaving with sooo many possibilities for his character.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hahaha, that theory about Bonnie! I think she just feels so disconnected from others and from happiness, she isn't herself and so she's acting a little strangely. It would make sense to leave Kai's fate up in the air for now, given Chris Wood's involvement in a new show, as Bertha mentioned below. Wish we could see mores of Kai this season, though!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I totally agree! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. I totally agree about Bonnie and Kai :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks! Great points on the episode, and I'd also love to see flashbacks from Lily's past...they must be coming soon, though, given how TVD usually plays these things :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmm, good point about Kai being able to cure vampirism as well. I wonder if he could do that again for a full fledged vamp or if other powerful witches could do the same.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL are you flipping it back on?

    ReplyDelete
  37. the most popular theory is that it was Lexi because she was a nurse

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it would probably be like the anti-magic spell, they'd simply die. but come to think about it if he sucks the vampirism out of someone in the prison world they might survive since they can't die there.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So you dont think that the payback arc came full circle there? Kai doublecrossed Bonnie and left her in.. for lack of a better term emotional, mental and Physical hell?. The when she gets the chance she dosnt have the same options open to her? The hell with that. There arnt any "Heroes' in this show.. just varied Villains.

I like that he was trapped in a prison world where his only 'friends' are Vampires that will USE HIM as a Blood bag. Hes a Gemini Coven lEADER trapped in a Prison world that his own coven devised. I love the irony!

    ReplyDelete
  40. So Lexi indirectly caused the death over 3000 people to one Vampire? Awesome1

    ReplyDelete
  41. Virginia: Um.. hasnt Bonnie been trapped in a Prison World for like a year +? Im assuming bar some strange antics that she hasnt had um.. err.. well.. done the 'Wild THing' for a year or more. So he would probably be a bit distracted by people getting to stage 1.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Logically, Kai totally got what was coming to him. But I still like the character and the actor's portrayal and wouldn't like to see him gone for good so soon :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ivan: I need to find my emotional trigger.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Lol, true!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yeah it was good, but his morph from Bad guy to .. well.. sorta bad guy/sorta good guy felt a bit too artificial to me. Besides he killed Luke who well... yeah.. he never really did much.

Im starting to see your point. He killed Luke! Hooray!

Actually my own gripe with him is that he started to steal snark dialogue from Damon. Thats a pretty minor gripe.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The other thing I took from this episode and I didnt care so much is that there was:

    A) no Liv
    B) no Tyler
    C) no Matt

I think the cast has expanded again to such a size where again they are having some major issues giving everyone some story crunch. Actually is Liv still around? Wont she have to like Merge with her older sister now in part of some strange plot device as Kait he new leader is off being a bloodbag in 1903?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't think she'll be back for longer than one or two episodes. She left the show because she didn't want to live in Atlanta anymore and wanted to be out in LA allegedly. TVD still films in Atlanta, so nothing has changed for her.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think the ending of Kai's tenure on the show was bitter sweet, they could have done a better job. However, it is clear that they want the character back should he not work out on the other show, so they left the door open....

    ReplyDelete
  49. He kinda looked like he was proposing to her, whilst begging for her forgiveness.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LOL do you know what it is? HA!

    ReplyDelete
  51. if it WAS her, yep, poor Lexi LOL

    ReplyDelete
  52. I guess we cant blame Lexi, considering she is a dead character and all.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I tend to cry when I see people willing watch ' Wives of XXXXXXX' style shows or home improvement style shows. Generally no, Im a very cold and unfeeling person not having any humanity.

    ReplyDelete
  54. To be honest, this episode has been one of the best of the season. Kai got what had been coming to him, We got to establish some more Salvatore storyline, Enzo did something, Alaric did something, Tyler and Matt did nothing ( I assume they are at Police Academy training).

{And to be honest I think this might be the Police Academy they are training at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087928/ )

Im not always convinced the show needs a Big bad evil type to sustain it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. meh, everyone gets to make a 3000 victim mistake once in a while.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I felt sad for Kai! However, he needed to actually feel how Bonnie felt when he stabbed and lefted her behind. But bring Kai back ASAP! I Love BonKai. I think that Kai will get out by using Qetsiyah's Bennett blood from the headstone in Nova Scotia and he will probably also bring back the cure from 1903.

The two cures should go to Elena and Caroline, Stefan and Damon has live along life. I think that should be endgame for them to have a shot at a semi-normal life. Semi since Bonnie is a witch. But at least they can have a family(children) something that the Salvatore brothers will never have.

I prefer Steroline like this! They're way more interesting to watch!

Damon is an old vampire. Just like Stefan knew Enzo/Ric was there. Damon knew when Bonnie arrived and is the reason he stop and said her name. I doubt she was watching them. But I love that we got that Bamon moment. I need more of those!!

Love Jo/Ric in this Episode! They really should've left Mama Salvatore in 1903. Damon should've listen to his voice of reason, instead of Elena.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kai is a powerful witch and that weak Vampire just grabbed him by the neck. I'm sure he still had the upper hand. Kai can Just make his brain pop like Bonnie use to do to Damon or snap his neck like Davina did to the those witches in The Originals!

    ReplyDelete
  58. that sucks because they made him a little bit of some kinda likable
because of that merge... I felt bad for a min or two.. but lol
    but he had it coming
thinking that he could just say he was sorry... forever wasn't going to fly after all he'd done to that girl... it was time for pay back
but if that's the end of him... because one can only assume that vamp that Lily woke up drained his butt dry.. that was just to easy getting rid of him.. I was expecting for Bonnie to take him out but that was just to quick

    ReplyDelete
  59. i'm more than bummed that they didn't explore Ric being a vampire.. that would have been interesting..

Bamon... that's what its all about for me... more more more.... now she brings out the best in him...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Did Kai know about Nova Scotia and Qetsiyah's headstone, and if he did would he be able to find it? Same ?? with the cure - does he know where it is, what it looks like and more important why would he get it to bring back to MF?

    ReplyDelete
  61. I wouldn't be surprised. After all, the Gemini coven has a large knowledge of events. They probably existed for 2000 years or something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Personally I think that Kai's Luke-mannerisms is hilarious. At first I hated him but now with two conflicting sides in him, I like him more. He's no Klaus, but far more interesting than a few villains. Where's Katherine when you need her? I would like to see her battle Kai with quips. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I truly enjoyed this episode but like you it left me with so many unanswered ??
    - Why didn't Lily have ample amount of blood in her prison world - Witches and there spells - was the punishment expect to fit the crime? That's 1 way to cure a ripper vamp. throw them in a prison world w/ limited blood supply.

    - Like you...I am so over the cure - I hope it will have more of a purpose this time around and be used for good - like possible cure Lily?

    - Loved the Kai / Bonnie moments - they really are great together - Kai is smart and powerful, I hope he figures out a way to return to MF

    - Lily - I get the feeling we are going to see scary/ messed up Lily before we see redemption Lily. I was glad to hear how much she hated Giuseppe, he was a tool. Did he know Lily became a vampire? Could be why he hated them so much.

    - Now that Sarah knows her real name how long will it be before she shows up on the Salvatore doorstep? What else does she have to do on spring break? Plus she is already in MF? It will be a Salvatore Christmas Miracle - 1 big happy family reunion.

    - Who are all these vamps Lily had with her in the prison world - looks like we are about to find out - will they be just like the tomb vamps? Going after council members? Is this when we learn more about MF town history?

    - Agree - Bonnie has issues - I have a feeling taking out her revenge on Kai was not enough for her get over her anger issues.

    ReplyDelete
  64. if their not going to at least explore Bonnie and Damon then they really need to cut the crap and stop hinting at it.. stop with the little here and there stop with the looks on both their faces when ever they are together..
I see it... I don't know if anyone else does.. but I do

    ReplyDelete
  65. About the cure, I believe it's for Lily.
Elena human again never was part of the plan. On season 4, Damon was the first choice to take it, but everyone start to speculate and his name was the first in line in all bets. So, the writers decided to cure Katherine instead.
Now, I think they brought this plot back just for add a little drama on the last episodes. Damon will offer it to Elena again, she will refuse again, then they will give the damn cure to Lily, who will probably have some problems to control her bloodlust, once she is not drinking in droppers anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Trust me, we SO do. Which makes it that much more painful if they will never explore it, just like you said. On the other hand even Julie and Caroline have some limits to their power, especially with such "great" results they bring for CW now... so we can hope that reason will eventually prevail on this.
IMHO especially this episode wasn't subtle about bamon at all, so if they will still keep refusing the idea after this, then they are 100% morons who are digging out their own graves...

  67. Yes to the first part, no to the second one. It's really great idea about Kai being able to suck out the vampire magic from someone, I like it, but it would simply work as an anti-magic border, unless Kai could come up with some way to stop them from dying afterwards.

But with Bonnie being chased by Kai in the 1994 prison world and left to die, and then mainly with her attempted suicide there, it has been hinted that only the person for whom the prison world was created in unable to die there, that's why it's their eternal prison, but anyone can die there just fine... And even if they couldn't, then the moment they would go back to the normal world, they would imho die because the magic of the prison world wouldn't work anymore...

  68. I think Caroline & Elena would be the best options (since they couldn't die of old age like Damon/Stefan/Lily) but I don't see that happening.

  69. Are you sure you arnt just seeing what you want to see?

I see them as friends and nothing more. Which is good. I dont think they will ever be besties, but Bonnie now fills more of a Sheriff Liz type role for Damon.

  70. Agree - Friends'ish nothing more - they basically used each other this episode to get what they wanted. And, Damon used Bonnie last episode, which ticked her off so much that she began inflicting some serious pain on him then screamed at him to get our of her dorm-room.

I do agree there is something going on with Bonnie but it is NOT her starting to have feelings for Damon.

  71. Maybe that is whey she was needing to find peace?

  72. This will always be subjective, of course (unless at some point they directly mention it), but I don't really think I do - unlike some bamon shippers that have been shipping them for years, I "changed my allegiance" only after noticing their chemistry this year. And IMHO there are may telltale signs that Bonnie has feelings for Damon - it's not only the way she thinks/speaks about him, how he was the person who she wanted to see first etc., but even the subtle things like her picking up a lot from his personality, wearing his clothes in the prison world, drinking his bourbon... And she rather stayed in the Salvatore house even when she was all alone, than going to her family's house... And then their phone call in 6.16, all the smiles, looks and flirty jokes... Also she was having a panic attack before that but after talking to Damon, she was immediately fine, he calmed her down...

And about the scene of her torturing Damon, that showed two things - how much damaged she is by Kai and all that time spent in the prison world, but also how much she trusts and needs Damon. Not only you need to trust someone to feel betrayed by them, but the more you trust them and the important they are to you, the more painful their betrayal is.

  73. Good idea about the possibly intentional limited blood supply in the 1903 prison. I think the writers need to explain the reason why Lily and her friends had so little access to blood, because otherwise it doesn't make sense.

  74. Katherine and Kai interacting would be epic!

  75. Great observation about Damon being aware that Bonnie was standing there in the end scene. That makes sense.

  76. You could say exactly the same thing about Bonnie and Kai - actually I believe they have had more flirting moments - Bonnie touching Kai when she was trying to locate the ascendant, Kai holding her hand telling her she had nice palms etc... - all little flirting moments, that Damon even noticed and told Kai he should at least buy Bonnie a drink first. This could be one reason Bonnie is so messed up because she was falling for Kai and he betrayed her.

  77. Well, we obviously have a different opinion on this (not that it's bad), I just want to say that I believe that Kai is - in his own, twisted way - attracted to Bonnie, thus the ascendant, nice palms comment etc. But while Kai and Damon may seem alike, they are very different and Bonnie is well aware of it, which she also told him after Damon confessed the whole story of killing Sarah's mother - she realizes that Damon keeps regretting and punishing himself for the evils that he's done, unlike Kai, which means that there is hope for him. And that while Bonnie likes Damon (whichever way you think), she still hates Kai.

Especially the new Bonnie is a compete badass who won't let anyone walk over her, be it Damon, Kai or anyone else. Do you really think she would fall for a guy that kept torturing her... and that she knows is a complete sociopath? And yes, I know that Kai now has feelings, but that's only because of the merge, actually they are Luke's feelings, Kai is still the same coldblooded sociopath as he used to be, just that his personality is mixed with Luke's now...

  78. Bonnie and Kai had an immediate attraction from the very beginning, I guess the question remains, now that Kai has changed is their hope for him? Will Bonnie consider giving him another chance? Because Bonnie is the one, Kai is mostly interested in mending his relationship with.

Agree to disagree regarding Bonnie and Damon - Elena & Bonnie have a very special bond of friendship, which only grew stronger after Elena's parents died. It has taken a lot for Damon to prove to Bonnie he is worthy of Elena's love. Bonnie knew Damon made Elena happy but it did not mean that she could trust him. Damon had to earn Bonnie's trust and acceptance but it was all for the love of her best friend. Honestly, outside of that what do they really have in common? In fact that is about all they discussed while locked up together in the prison world. Bonnie discovered Damon's true feelings for Elena and their friendship grew from there. It is great to see this new friendship evolve, but friendship is all I see nothing more especially since Elena is the key/ bond holding their friendship together.

  79. Well it will be interesting to see if Kai would even know how to get to Nova Scotia with 1903 technology / transportation. My guess a very long time - so maybe he finds another source of power. Kai reminds me of Klaus he is always 1 step ahead. I think he saw this ambush coming a mile away and had a back-up plan - at least the old evil Kai would have.

  80. I couldn't agree more!!

  81. Also - FYI - not sure if you read Den of Geek...but they had an interesting perspective on Bonnie and Kai, plus I just like reading various writers interpretation of the show. I provided the link below.

  82. Thanks - also, if you are interested Den of Geek wrote about BonKai this week. So true and spot on.

  83. I kind of agree with both of you guys. I don't think it's an issue of people seeing what they want to see either. The writers seem to be teasing viewers with the possibility of both Bamon and Bonnie and Kai. And I say this as someone who wasn't a fan of Bamon (because I couldn't stand the way he used to treat her) and someone who isn't a fan of Bonkai. The idea of Bamon really grew on me in this season and I think that Qwerty is right about their interactions suggesting deeper than friendship. The same with Kia (minus the friendship part of course!). I'm definitely not a fan of Bonnie and Kai getting together (mainly because it sounds a little too much alike a Stockholm syndrome), but I have to grudgingly admit that the chemistry between those two is definitely palpable...However, at this moment, the interest is purely one-sided...even if Bonnie were subconsciously attracted to Kai, she certainly doesn't care about him and I definitely don't see her rushing back to the prison world to save him.

Anyway, the fact that the writers are blatantly teasing viewers with these two potential ships, doesn't mean that either will happen, as someone pointed out. The writers are notorious for not following through with any Bonnie-related story,...they just tease viewers with potential plots. So I wouldn't be surprised if Bonnie ended up with neither or ended up getting back together with Jeremy (in some behind-the-scenes skype conversation witnessed by no one)

  84. I agree the writers like to confuse the audience but I think it goes beyond Bamon and to the heart of Elena and Bonnie's relationship as friends. I just don't see Bonnie doing that to Elena nor do I see Damon showing any interest. I mean he thought he was going to be spending eternity with Bonnie in the prison world and never made a move. Just seems unrealistic.

  85. She explained it in the beginning. Keep in mind she has been in the prison world for over 100 years and there are no other people there, just blood banks. She said they went on a rampage during the first years and then realized they would run out; so began rationing. Makes sense that the prison world doesn't replenish what they already drank.

    ReplyDelete
  86. It does make sense, especially since this prison world was built for a vampire, as opposed to the 1995 one that was built for a witch.
