The Reaper has landed at NBC. I’ve learned that the network has given a production order to a six-hour miniseries from the Weinstein Co. based on the recently released book The Reaper: Autobiography Of One Of The Deadliest Special Ops Snipers by Nicholas Irving, the U.S. Army 3rd Ranger Battalion’s deadliest sniper.

The Weinstein Company logoThe Weinstein Co. acquired the rights to Irving’s memoir less than a week after it was published by St. Martin’s Press with the indention to adapt it as a miniseries to begin production in the summer. The Reaper comes on the heels of the blockbuster success of the Bradley Cooper starrer American Sniper, also an adaptation of the memoir of one of American’s most decorated snipers.

ReplyDeleteWhat does NBC have that they can pair this with? What ever happened to Greenblatt saying he wanted to focus on family friendly programming?
Greenblatt needs to be a lot more focused if he wants NBC to recover and succeed.

ReplyDeleteA sniper series should be great but not one based on actual events or (in American Snipers way) an adaption of a piece of work that reportedly is going AGAINST the actual facts of what happened.
ReplyDeleteI'd go for a sniper-show that procedurally puts the main sniper into various different situations and cases. Fictional is better than "based on a true story"

Based on a real story? pass, recent history? Pass, War stuff? Pass, shit it hit all my pass list criteria expect spin off's, tho not exact its a little bit so from that movie.
ReplyDeleteGreenblatt's view on development seems to be that while he is trying to focus on faith, fantasy, and family aspects, he wants to make sure he has something that can fit literally any category out there. Basically, he's trying to acquire anything that could potentially hit for NBC. That way, he avoids saying everything new was a bust a second year in a row.
ReplyDeleteOnce he figures out what works on NBC, he will limit the scope of development a bit.
Layer in some tasty sci-fi and switch out the male lead for a kick-ass chick in her late 20's and I'll consider watching the pilot. Other than that, throw me another pitch, NBC, cuz a no-frills sniper show isn't gonna fly with me.

ReplyDeleteThe "pick up anything with potential" mentality gave us "The Slap" so I'm not convinced that is the best approach for NBC.
ReplyDeleteWhat has helped ABC and Fox this season is picking up shows that are compatible with their brand of programming. Of course both networks have had some missed but overall they have become more focused in their development.
I like this Sniper project but it's pretty off-brand for the network unless they decide to use it on their new male-skewing Thursdays as winter filler.
