The 100 - Blood Must Have Blood Part 1 - Review: "It can't be over"

I honestly can’t believe what just happened. Just when I thought the show couldn’t pull any more surprises Lexa, a character I have been growing fond of, goes and betrays the Sky People so she could save her own people. It was a cold, understandable move that I just didn’t see coming, not because it’s out of character, but because it means rescuing the 44 on Mt Weather has just become mission impossible. What happens next? That’s the sole question that goes around my mind right now.

Honestly, when the episode started I felt that this was going to be like “We are the grounders Part 1”, you know, a good episode that’s 95% build up to Part 2. I was liking what I was seeing, but I had this overwhelming sensation that I would have to wait until next week to have any real thrill, that everything here would be just setup and that it would have been better to air the two parts together. I still believe a two hour season finale would have been epic, but there’s no denying there’s enough thrill to get you excited about the next episode instead of just thinking “this was merely build up”.

There’s tons of builds up, but there’s also tons of action: Raven and Wick steal the show’s most heartwarming scenes - and also some of the best character interaction - through their story. They have to cut off the power on Mt Weather by making explode the generators, but they are soon made, complicating their situation. Wick is forced to kill a person from Mt Weather, cue to Raven’s cold but true “welcome to the ground”: in order to survive you have to kill some people on Earth.

Once Raven and Wick manage to destroy the generators and you see that the power is off on Mt Weather there’s a false sense of security: you feel like everything is going to work out perfectly, even if by this point you know better. And it is truly heartbreaking to see, how after Lexa betrayed Clarke, Wick and Raven wake up after the blast, and Wick says Raven that he is going to stay by her, while Raven herself says “I was going to say please don't leave me”. It’s an incredibly touching and poignant moment that is immensely devastating since they are quickly apprehended by Mountain Men.

Speaking of devastating - and there’s plenty on this episode -, the whole Octavia storyline moved quickly as it should, and as soon as she got to be called “Octavia of the tree people” by Indra, that respect is quickly taken away when she decides to stay for her brother and Indra says she’s no longer her second.

Octavia is the bridge between the Sky People and the Grounders, she is both, but right now it would seem that she’s in nowhere land, floating in between. She says so herself; she was confronted with an impossible situation, as Lexa ordered a retreat and she chose her brother first. It is what any sibling would do and as such is really sad, because Octavia worked so hard to be treated as equals among the grounders and now she’s back to square one.

But I think nothing will ever be as devastating as seeing Clarke’s face once she realizes that Lexa has taken the deal. They worked together, they marched together, they killed people together - mountain men and even their own -, and after all the work they’ve done, after finally being at the entrance of Mt Weather, Lexa gives her back on Clarke.

Clarke is incredibly hurt; I’m sure she’s pissed, but most of all there’s an incredibly air of sadness and sorrow on her face that once again proves just how awesome Eliza Taylor is.
And this is probably one of the most surprising dialogues I’ve heard:
Clarke: “What did you do?”
Lexa: “What you would have done.”
I honestly don’t know if Clarke would have gone for the deal, honestly, but that’s up for debate. However, it’s clear that Clarke does understand why Lexa did what she did.

Things on Mt Weather are not less dire: as the 44 have found some allies, the soldiers on Mt Weather start raiding every possible place on the mountain to find them, and they are even willing to kill the traitors who aid them. Luckily for Jasper and Maya, after they get captured Maya’s dad stall enough time for Bellamy to come up and rescue everybody.

By then, Bellamy had already started freeing the Grounders trapped inside Mt Weather and he is confident that they’ll help. Sadly, as he, Jasper and Maya find Monty, he tells them that the Mountain Men already know about them and that they are on their way. And on an incredibly bleak note, the episode is about to close and show us Bellamy and company getting to the harvest chamber to see that there is no Grounder army waiting for them. Oh, and Maya’s dad is left there dead. Bleak stuff.

And so the episode comes to an end with Clarke staring at the gate; people tell her is over for now, and she says “it can’t be over” and so we see her standing there as the camera zooms out. Cut to black.

The episode totally deceived making me believe that the build up was all for next week when in fact it came in service of a completely incredible twist on the very same episode. Every scene is great even if they are building up to something, and it becomes even more relevant and thrilling once Lexa gives her back on Clarke. Stuff starts hitting the fan and we’re left wondering what’s next. Not many shows would dare putting their characters in this kind of situation, and that’s what I love about the show: I love that it is bold and that it has big balls to pull these stuff off.

Grade: A

Stray Observations:

-Character I miss the most this week: Kane, he’s always a great player in every episode, but since he’s injured it makes sense the finale wouldn’t let us see him. Same goes for Abby, but I rather have Kane.

-Correcting a mistake made weeks ago: I killed off Nyko in my “Coup de Grâce” review, but it wasn’t him, it just looked like him. Sorry folks, mistakes are made from time to time.

-Showing off: Lincon shooting an arrow on fire; man that was a cool shot!

-Miller got to kill a guard on screen, proving that aside from Bellamy, Jasper and Monty, there are those among the 44 that are still needed to survive, even if they don’t get as much screen time.

-Maya’s dad may not have been a memorable character, but Maya’s reaction once she finds him dead gets me.

-Dante advised Cage to make the offer with Lexa. He did it for his people, so I understand his actions, but damn! All the damaged he caused to our characters really make me want to hate him right now… and I can’t.

-The commander’s orders are the most important things for the Grounders, it seems, though I’m sure not everyone is happy to leave the battlefield: deal or not, the Mountain Men still hit them with a missile.

-Talking of which, I see sometime in the future (season 3) Clarke coming clear about the missile just to dethrone Lexa.

-Raven: “Fine, geez, you can tell me a damn joke already. Get it? Dam Joke.”
It’s silly, but I like puns, especially coming off from Raven.

-Dante to Cage: “You’ve killed us.”

Pablo’s “this show should be nominated for an emmy!” section:
-Outstanding drama series - submitting episodes “Spacewalker” “Coup de Grâce”, “Blood Must Have Blood Part 1” (and possibly Part 2)

-Outstanding lead actress in a drama series: Eliza Taylor for “The 48”, “Rubicon” or “Blood Must Have Blood Part 1”

-Outstanding supporting actor in a drama series: Henry Ian Cusick for “Resurrection” and Bob Morley for “The 48” or “Coup de Grâce”

-Outstanding supporting actress in a drama series: Lindsey Morgan for “Bodyguard of Lies”

-Outstanding guest actor in a drama series: Raymond J. Barry (President Dante Wallace) for “Rubicon” or “Blood Must Have Blood Part 1”

-Outstanding stunt coordination: for the battles on “Resurrection”

-Outstanding special effects: for “Rubicon”

  1. i thought it was a pretty awesome episode! the lexa twist was equal parts amazing and frustrating. but overall it set up the finale so perfectly. I'm already hyperventilating in anticipation lol

  2. I agree that may be an issue, but it's so little that I gave it zero importance

  3. You're not the only one! I'm dying here! I need the next episode now!
I adore this show, and I'm not ready for the season to be over :(

  4. Am I the only one Who just doesn't cadre about Jaha and Murphy?

  5. Ha, I love your Emmy's section! I would love for The 100 to be nominated for anything, but most deserving for me are Eliza Taylor and Henry Ian Cusick. One could argue whether Bob Morley is a supporting actor or a lead actor. I think with the changing Emmy rules, Raymond J. Barry would not be eligable (a guest actor can't appear in more than 50% of the show's episodes). What am I talking about, this will sadly never happen anyway. Just to be curious, which episode would you nominate for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series?

Anyway, this episode shocked me and somewhat frustrated me, but it is also once again an outstanding episode. Some could argue that the entire point of the season is just thrown away in an instant of a moment, and that Finn's death, the TonDC bombing, the alliance and the kiss have all been for nothing. However, if The 100 tackles complicated isues then betrayal is one of them. Clarke is basically back to square one, and I think most of us know what that feels like. Life knocks us down, but that doesn't mean it's over. It definitely isn't for Clarke. I hope we get to see a big battle next week, and I am not looking forward to the months-long hiatus that follows.

  6. Last week they treated their storyline well, but I certainly didn't miss them this week

  7. Great review! I too was missing Kane this week, he is actually my favorite character on the show. Loved his "Road to redemption" story arc. It looks like he will be in next weeks episode (from the promo) but again like Resurrection things don't look good for him.

Henry Ian Cusick definitely deserves an Emmy and so does Eliza, but sadly it wont ever happen. It would be nice if it did though.

I have a feeling one of the main cast will end up dying next episode, and again I would put my money on it being Abby. Her death would be interesting. Clarke would most likely blame Lexa for it which would be a huge turning point in their relationship (even though what happened this episode was pretty huge).

I'm kind of annoyed the finale wasn't 2hrs, I hate waiting a week for it, especially since the promo looks so damn good.

  8. It's really hard to choose one episode to nominate the show! I already mentioned my top 3 picks. Of those 3... I think I'd go with "Spacewalker" mostly because there are so many of the show's strenghts in display there: hard choices leaders must take, the morality of it all, some outstanding performances. But “Coup de Grâce”, “Blood Must Have Blood Part 1” could easily go there too, I'd give the edge to "Spacewalker", but the line is very thin.

And I agree complety with your vision of the episode: as of right now it seems like all Clarke did was for nothing, but that's how life works, and now she has to adjust to the situation at hand and live with the choices she made. I think I've said this before: there's no easy way outs on The 100, and that's why it is so outstanding

  9. I didn't really care for their story, but after last weeks episode I now really want to know what the city of light is. (They have a drone!)

  10. I hate waiting too! Considering the episodes were labeled "part 1 and 2" it shouldn't have been that hard for The CW to schedule them together. Oh well, what can you do?

If a main character dies next week, I'm going to be crushed: I adore every single cast member and I like every main character, so it will be devastating for me no matter who dies.

And I know it's really unlikely for The 100 to snatch a nomination outside technical ones, but damn! The show deserves it and it would be pretty sweet if it got one. And all we're asking for is a nomination, a win would be a huge plus and I'd be ecstatic, but the nomination alone would be a step forward

  11. Eliza's acting - Clarke's reaction to Lexa's betrayel...she made me cry lie a baby. My heart broke for her. Great twist, even though it was heart crushing!

  12. So agree about the Emmys, but with this show being sci-fi AND on the CW, the show and actors will never get the recognition they deserve.

  13. i actually am very ready for the season to be over! not because it was so bad, but because it was so good! like I'm glad they didn't do 22 episodes because it would've been slower. I know that I will always look back on season 2 of the 100 and be like "wow that was a near flawless season start to finish with no fillers"

    ReplyDelete
  14. Would they really kill Abby after Clarke just lost her father, Wells, and Finn all withiin 1 year? Would the writers be that brutal?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I care about them, it's just their storyline has been a little boring. Im really excited to see what they find and where they end up though. You know it's going to be a huge shocking twist that sets up the story for season 3.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah that was odd tha they didn't have backup, but I guess the writers wanted them to be alone to have their moments.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I suppose that will be the finale's cliffhanger.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like the characters, just not so much the storyline, well that was until last episode, now I really want to know what the City of Light is.

There probably will some twist next episode that will make wait for Season 3 very hard.

  19. Agree on "Spacewalker", but there are so many more awesome episodes. I plan a rewatch of both seasons this summer, just to relive all these outstanding episodes again.

I feel really, really sad for Clarke. She is literally facing this huge mountain of problems. And from the promo of next week, it looks like she will face more with Abby and Kane being kidnapped.

  20. Would be funny with someone rolling his eyes on their trash talk. But okay I accept the decision.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I wouldn't put it passed them. Each death has made Clarke stronger.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just wait anxiously for the next episode ;)

I like all characters, but the one I have a hard time liking is Raven. I don't know what it is about her, but whenever she appears on screen I immediately lose interest.

  23. Yep, there are plenty of awesome episodes, so it's really hard to choose. The only ones that were merely good and not great are "Earth Skills" (episode 1x02) and "Day Trip" (episode 1x08), but aside from that The 100 has remained on the great status for every episode it has made. And even those two episodes are still pretty good.

And yeah, one does feel for Clarke. So many feels....

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm also glad they didn't do 22, otherwise they may have had the trouble of deciding how much they drag things on, unless they did split seasons, but that's a lot of hard work. 16 episodes seems like the best number of episodes for a season of The 100

  25. Try soul crushing! Eliza's performance this season has been one of the greatest surprises I've seen on TV

    ReplyDelete
  26. First of all thank you for allowing us die hard fans to just spare a thought about emmy nominations because we all know the 100 & Eliza Taylor deserves them haha.. Also very great review! The betrayal was awesome but my only worry is that they have left it so open ended in terms of Clarke&Lexa's relationship going forward that I'm not sure they'll even be able to revisit it in the way they have hoped. & I'm not talking anything romantic but more in the sense that Alycia will probably not be able to continue her role so I'm not sure how much follow up we'll actually get. Don't get me wrong Lexa is a fascinating character but I'm not sure the writers will actually carve out an entire season for one actor & one character with just possibilities which leads me to believe if Clarke&Co ever do go to the capitol we'll be told Lexa just isn't there or died & there is a new Commander which is just sort of annoying. But aside from that this was just amazing storytelling & as amazing as the guest cast has been and how interesting this alliance has played out I am so happy this is coming back to the100 vs Mt Weather. & the kids are alone. This is a show of survival and all the factions that have survived but I find it mostly the kids story & Clarke's story so after everything they've been through to have it come back down to this. Clarke vs Cage.... Clarke Bellamy Monty Jasper & Octavia on the outside working to save their people that are captured and being drilled for their bone marrow. It reminds us what this story is about and it really is staying true to the premise of the show (despite less than half the original hundred dead) haha. All the grounders are interesting&all but with the finale going back to its roots with the kids versus the world type thing that just made me realize this is so much better than any epic We are Grounders battle 2.0 Love the writing!Love the cast! Very sad we must wait for season 3.. Also side note I just really hope they'll be able to tie the kids with the City of Light storyline in early season 3 because whatever twist they have with this drone (the new white room) cliffhanger is going to be awesome.. and I want all the characters to be a part of it!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Probably, we'll either see it nearing the end of the hour or by the end of the hour. Just like when the Ark was brought down to Earth and yet the cliffhanger was The 48 being taken by Mt Weather, we may see something like that this season, with Jaha finding something beyond the sea and then crazy stuff happens to Clarke and company

    ReplyDelete
  28. The season finale is gonna be so good!

    ReplyDelete
  29. seriously? what about Alycia? c'mon she's amazing and you know it!

  30. Thanks for a great, well thought out review! Next week is sure to leave a lot of us with our jaws on the floor.

  31. Yes, yes I think they would since they have no soul.

  33. Of course I know it! She's been doing an amazing job as Lexa! I just don't know if there's an episode in which she could be nominated for outstanding guest actress - or supporting actress, depending on the rules right now- on a drama series, maybe for "Survival of the fittest" or "Bodyguard of Lies", but to me it still seems a bit like a longshot simply because though she makes for an amazing and haunting performance, there is too much competition on the category (same reason I didn't name Paige Turco or Isaiah Washington, both of which had some amazing performances). But if she could make it I would be really happy! She has done an outstanding job on the show

I think the deal was: you either continue the attack, loose half your people in fighting in the tunnels and risk last moment firing of missiles on several other grounder willages, or you retreat, get your people back and know MM will not need any more Grounders for blood or for turning into Reapers. At the same moment Emerson probably told Lexa they know about Grounder prisoners released by Bellamy and that there is very little chance to win this war at any reasonable price. The decision was clear then.
To understand this you just have to forget your emotions (also as wievers :-) ) and use only your head....
The question is - what next? My feeling is someone kills Cage (Lincoln?) and Dante makes deal with Abby about bone marrow transplants... We just have to wait and see... ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Lexa's decision doens't make any sense, maybe we will find out next week if there is a good reason we don't know that explains why she did that, but there is no reason to make a deal like this when you know you are going to win anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What I don't understand about this episode is how the hell the MM were still leaving the mountain and shooting from above and going to the dam to stop raven when apparently there is only one enterance and exit where all the grounders and sky people are waiting.. Wtf is this

    ReplyDelete
  37. HAHA I didn't miss them at all too!

    ReplyDelete
  38. That's the only entrance the sky people know of, and the only one that's not heavily guarded aside from the reaper cave that Octavia went in
