I think purely for practical purposes the costume department remit is to buy everyone shoes with big heels apart from Jared as you can see the nun has big heels as well.
It is either that or have someone attack the man with a hacksaw at the knees to make sure it doesn't turn into the little people and giant show.
It bugs me that they don’t look like the kind of shoes that guys wear on construction sites so that a nail won’t go right through the sole of the shoe and pierce their foot. Dean just look like he is wearing lifts.
I guess they had Sam wear Pumas as long as they could get away it but Sam has graduated to wearing shoes that are more fitting for a hunter so Dean/Jensen has to compensate for the height difference. :)
I agree with you because when Sam wore gutties Dean was in biker boots or work boots that looked like biker and work boots and the boots in the picture are definitely more a fashion type boot.
But I suppose they couldn't keep Sam in gutties forever, it would look stupid as he bulked out and got a more blue collar look.
But then you look at the nun, her shoes have heels too and what nun would were heels like that?
But then you look at the nun, her shoes have heels too and what nun would were heels like that?
I wondered about that too. :) For the average woman those heels would not be unusual at all but might not exactly be in keeping with the rules that nuns adhere to.
But if Jared is not even shooting with them, couldn’t they (Jensen) wear normal shoes and use shoes that have especially high heels only when they have a difficulty to fit the actors inside the same frame?
Maybe they can’t be bothered to change shoes but I think it can mess up the dynamic between the brothers a little bit. Like Dean being protective of his little brother would be one of his most defining character traits no matter who were cast in the roles but Sam being physically big added a nice twist to it. If he had been more like young Sam played by Colin Ford (before the actor got tall) then Dean’s overprotectiveness would have probably come across a little differently like “Oh, of course big brother Dean needs to look after little Sammy.” Sam being taller than Dean and fit etc. but Dean still fretting over him was fun. :D
Probably they can't be bothered doubling the shoe budget for everyone other than Jared also it would be a bit obvious if Jensen and all guest stars suddenly shrunk by dropping a couple of inches when standing by props say like light fittings on walls etc the second Jared left the room.
As for Dean being the overprotective fighter but being smaller, I always liked that and in a way kind of made sense all the way from season 1 even with the twist of the short one being the bruiser, Sam got the food he wanted and Dean didn't when there was a shortage.
I like that it is still that way even though they picked up Sam bulked up. Wasn't he described as being the size of a car at one point?

I don’t really care what they do with the guest stars. They should let the leads’ heights be as is. Have Jensen stand on an apple box or have him wear lifts only when it’s need to get the shot.

I don’t have that kind of headcanon. Dean is a tall guy and around the same height as John. It’s just that Sam is really tall. The food Sam wanted wasn’t even all that nutritious. :)
I think that they have made a deliberate decision to make Jensen taller by having him wear special shoes even when the scenes don’t require Dean to appear to be closer to Sam’s height. Promotional pictures for 10.07 Girls, Girls, Girls and 10.13 Halt & Catch Fire come to mind. I don’t find that look to be attractive. But I guess what matters to them is that Sam doesn’t make Dean look like a short man.
but the demanding lucky charms and getting them while Dean went without kind of set the tone.
I don’t see that episode indicating that Dean had to go hungry for Sam’s sake during their childhood. Dean threw the food he had prepared for Sam in the trash and later went to play archive games.
I think that Dean enjoying the food he does could stem from the monotony of the kinds of foods they ate growing up. Now that he has his own money, he can indulge himself like he would have wanted to when he was a kid.
Plus I don’t think that Dean would be so wanted as a vessel if he had been so deprived that it affected his growth etc.
I do not think Dean went hungry , Physical difference between siblings does not indicate deprevation of one and Dean is not that short , it is turning Dean into too much of a Dickens Victorian character that IMO is simply not there.
See I kind of do. Sam demanding lucky charms and getting over spagettios kind of suggests the pattern Sam always got first dibs on any food that was there and what choice of food he got when they had it.
We also know there were periods the boys went hungry. In bad boys Dean got nicked over stealing food. And today especially when it comes to free food we see Dean stock up - when he has a choice and time he prefers home cooked food but have a plate of sandwiches in front of him he was one step from hamster especially in the beginning of the series.
Where did anyone turn Dean into the artful Dodger? There is no Fagin or sending anyone to the penal colonies.
However the show tells us that there were periods John didn't come back when he said he would. He left money for the boys and Dean knew how to steal at an early age. Why would he know that if the boys were getting everything they needed from the money John left? We are told stories of periods he had to get imaginative to feed Sam, we've seen him be arrested for stealing food when money was short. We've seen young him cave to young Sam over food choices and load up on free food when available.
And physical differences between siblings don't always indicate deprivation of food but can explain it.

That doesn't mean that Dean had to go hungry for Sam's sake. Dean got mad when Sam wanted Lucky Charms instead of SpaghettiOs even though Dean hadn't had any so Dean threw the food away.

Dean: I lost the food money that Dad left for us in a card game. I knew you'd get hungry, so ... I tried taking the five-finger discount at the local market and got busted.
Of course Dean would not allow Sam to go hungry because Dean had gambled their food money away so he tried to break even by stealing. One can have their own headcanon regarding why Dean would risk their money on a card game but the episode isn't proof that Dean had to sacrifice eating in order to keep Sam fed.
I think that Dean wanted to eat his favorite foods (hamburgers, pie etc.) instead of the same old same old (macaroni and cheese) that they were budgeted for and Dean was confident in his abilities to hustle so he bet with the money that John had left for them.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
“He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother” :D
ReplyDeleteThe camera loves Jensen.
I hate that Dean wears shoes that have huge heels.

Jared's height has a lot to answer for.
