Well. I love the boots, Seriously love the boots. I'm just not sure about this actress. She doesn't seem to have the charisma I'd want for Supergirl. She's actually kind of bland here.
Maybe that's what I'm missing. She needs to go full on blonde or full on dark if they want to vary from the comic. At least put some serious highlights in.
I will give her a chance, i will still watch the show, but i am just saying i am disappointed, because i really hated her in Glee, but on the other side, everything about glee is terrible lately (sadly). And i was also hoping for Claire Holt, so that disappointed me too. I hope she will prove me wrong and will perform very well so i can enjoy the show
Eh. It's fine. The bar has been set considerably lower since NBC's attempt at Wonder Woman. They certainly haven't gotten any better in the DCU. I'm giving it a pass.
^^ that actress makes me think of Ginny from Harry Potter tbh rather than Kara. Also, I think I can say I prefer every single outfit Kara had in SV over that. Even this (which I wasn't originally crazy of and liked her season 7 looks better) I think I prefer. Now that seems modern, alive (maybe a slightly different shades of these) and does make me think of SG. Gosh I loved that Kara. But that's just me. Maybe I'll watch the pilot anyways.
Laura will always be Kara for me, I love her...and they're just doing a poor job with the new show, first the cast Melissa and now the costume, Im not at all sold on this show...
Thank you! I absolutely agree! (and call me crazy I don't watch Flash/Arrow but this looks much more fitting for the universe if they were to ever somehow cross them). This actually somehow looks more realistic ;)
I actually like who they picked to play her, at least she doesn't look like a fucking playboy bunny playing dress up but a real woman, the costume needs a bit of work.
This is the first I see this actress tbh and she just doesn't seem right (the lack of blonde ain't helping. Yes, I'm sorry Kara has to be blonde) and true about Laura. Laura & Nicholle Tom (from Animated Superman series & Justice League) are Kara...heck, even Helen Slater sort of (she's the first to play the role live after all) but certainly Laura & Nicholle.
Funny enough: "The costume for Supergirl was designed by Colleen Atwood, who also designed the costumes for TV’s The Flash and Arrow" (from TVline) how they got to this after doing both Arrow & Flash? it doesn't look remotely similar. Anyway, I was happy Kara finally gets her TV show despite the changes and such but this might be too much. It doesn't feel like SG.
I have to agree. I don't have a problem with the costume per se, I mean, it's just ok, but the actress doesn't look "super", Laura did, just look at her in this picture! But of course, I'll wait and see, but so far, not a very good first impression.
Comparing both actresses: Laura is basically standing, the other girl is trying a pose and yet Laura looks much, much more powerful/fierce. You're right, the girl they cast doesn't look "Super" she just looks like a cute girl I guess.
As for the outfit *sigh*. If you go for the classic-ish look (though now that I see that LV picture I think Arrow/Flash look really might have just been the way to go) at least have it brighter, fuller, more colorful this is just ...depressing.
Been trying to cut that black background thing out and I still find it pretty depressing with those colors lol and why would they put her in that kind of setting? black background to an already too dark/bleak outfit? if they were going for hope I got a different feeling.
This whole thing doesn't sit right with me regarding the character and even with the actress they picked this seems completely wrong. I mean just look at that sweet smile and then her dark outfit & background. 0 sense.
I never watched SV's final tbh so idk lol I do know I hate MOS's outfit and this kinda makes me think of it.
Exactly. They muted the color a bit like they did for the feature film Supes suit Cavil wore without going too far and it's not skin tight because this is CBS after all. There's only so much you can do with a bright red and blue body suit with a huge cape attached.
"It'll do" seems to sum it up best.
An aside:
The dlisted website had the funniest take on Melissa Benoist in her costume:
I’m not really getting Supergirl from this. I’m getting “know-it-all honor student who really wants to be popular and shows up to yearbook picture day in a Supergirl costume because she thinks that’s cute.”
The only "problem" (if you can call it that) I really had with Laura's casting was that I thought she was too old... other than that she definitely looked the part!
Eh... Smallville was never too subtle with it's costuming... they were absolutely aiming for a more campy & comic-book-y effect but is worked in the context of that show.
Laura had the look of Supergirl but she wasn't a very strong actress. I've never seen this girl in Glee but I enjoyed her acting in Whiplash. Overall I'm not a fan of a Supergirl show. However, I'll give it a wait and see approach.
The costume is good. I like it especially the boots. You know what is missing the actress does not project that confidence of a superhero in this photo. She looks like just another beautiful girl in a dress. I am sure she will be better in the series. But there is a lack of fierceness in this photo which makes it dull. Amelia and Stephanie in last episode of Grey's Anatomy had more of the superman attitude than this photo.
I honestly was never bothered with her age. While she wasn't a teen and was in her early 20's (Laura, if I calculated right she was 23 when S7 aired), but she had such a fresh, young-ish looks to her. I think to me she felt 18-19 when she first appeared (and with Kara's: "that what happens when you touch my stuff", "I guess the humans are right, Kal-El. Girls do mature faster than boys" she did came off teen-ish [not to mention that watermelon thingy]), so in the late teens to Kara, but that ain't too bad...she was still plenty of young and valid to be called Supergirl. And my gosh, she was a great SG! she actually got me interested in the character. The only person to ever get me to buy a comic book (ok 2 lol) and watch the animated episodes/movies with Kara (hell, even the live movie with Helen Slater).
"Eh"? this look is absolutely awesome and would absolutely make a million times more sense than the actual SG pilot's photos. It's contemporary and I can see it in Arrow/Flash-verse. It's bold and colorful in very good ways. This makes much more sense for a Supergirl (and a girl) set in the "dark and gritty .. "/current times to wear. This actually screams more SG to me than the picture above does (though it is closer to the comics design)...maybe the darkness/bleakness and blonde-less has to do with it (and the lack of fierceness) I'm sorry, but I'm not really feeling it.
There's nothing wrong with campy & comic-booky, these characters are from the comic books why is it so bad SV embraced it? (and you know whom else) why is it so bad to show off a little color? we live in a colorful world. Like I said, I didn't watch SV through until the end, and I never cared for so many of the superheroes/heroes that have appeared in, it but I don't remember having problem with their outfit. (Clark's constant Red/Blue jacket with his Red/Blue shirt was annoying at some point because seems like all he was wearing lol vs. variety he had the first couple of seasons IIRC). *sigh* if I sound frustrated I'm sorry... it's not you, it's DC/WB and constant thinking that darker is better/more realistic and should be implied to all their superheroes including Clark and now Kara despite they supposed to represent hope.
I know that back then Laura was still in the age group that would be cast for late teen. And I'm in no way saying she looked old.
But I've always pictured Kara as more of a fresh faced young teenage GIRL. And I think Laura looked more womanly that girly regardless of how she acted and what she said.
You kinda did when you said "I thought she was too old" maybe you meant age wise though.
Either way, just gonna have to disagree because IMHO she was more than fine, she really was super! a late-teen-ed Kara, still looking fresh/young, being fierce and having sass. She honestly was flawless to me (and I hated SV for kicking her out lol)
You're being overly defensive here. I didn't say anything bad about Smallville...
I was never a big fan of it, sure... I was casual viewer at best. But I've never been critical of the show. It was pretty good for what it was. And good on them for embracing the camp! As I said what the show did worked in the context OF the show. So yeah kudos!!
However some of the things didn't appeal to me personally (which is what never had me invest in the show 100%). The heavy handed foreshadowing colour pallet of Clark's (and later Kara's) outfits was one of those things. As you said, it turned out to be repetitive. And again let me repeat: it worked for the show! But for me personally, "Eh" pretty much sums it.
And you're right, about the dark=better mentality. I don't necessarily agree with the approach. But I think depending on what tone you're going for in your show, you need to adjust accordingly to fit the world. If you're going for something more realistic and muted, throwing in bright colours would imbalance the feel. In my professional opinion (and for the record: this is actually my profession) it wouldn't show "hope" it would show inconsistency in the world.
I'm being overly defensive because the impression I got from your post that it was a bad thing...(posts don't make a sound & I read the "eh") but yes, I admit it's kinda of a touchy subject this whole DC thing. It wasn't about offending SV it was about the "campy, comic-booky" which sounded as a criticizem so I jumped because I'm tired of DC fans keep saying how it's such a bad thing and how things need to be toned down. I'm kinda passionate about this subject and I misread. I'm sorry. Do not regret criticizing the picture/outfit though, it honestly bugs.
I honestly didn't read that with your first paragraph, this makes things more clear. Thanks! I donno if I can call it "camp", comic booky seems more right because with colors and design I think it was more closer to the books.
And yeah, I disagree. I think that outfit could absolutely work in Arrow/Flash world, the thing that stands out/doesn't work IMHO is the one they actually came up with (and I absolutely feel passionately that Kara should be blonde).
Hopefully you realize I wasn't defensive because of SV. I'm just tired of DC lol and IMHO their misguidance. I actually loved Kara's wardrobe it didn't just had Red and Blue (in a form of very nice clothes and different types of clothes) it also had some White...(heh, and her hair was the Yellow I guess :p) Clark's I really enjoyed in the first seasons before it was so much of the same Red/Blue jacket with the same Reid/Blue shirt lol but yes, I enjoyed the colors references even if it was so obvious. I find it endearing and charming but maybe that's just me lol
See, but if they need to adjust to fit the world Kara certainly should be looking more of a super-current-kickass type (LV pic with that pants and jacket etc.) no? and we absolutely disagree here I feel because you still think she should muted and I feel she should still retain some of her colors, be the hope in this dark universe, be a bit contrasted to the brooding Arrow :p because after all: Supergirl (she should be so dark/serious)
but yeah, well, we're just gonna have to disagree and see what happens.
Um.... I think Kristin (Lana) and Allison (Chloe) actually looked a lot like teens and the actor playing Pete. But yeah, teens on TV aren't really teens. Again I guess there'll be a difference because it never bothered me in SV (that I can remember). And I did not see Kara & Clark very close in age.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
no.
ReplyDeleteHmm.
ReplyDeleteThat's all I can say at this point.
Well. I love the boots, Seriously love the boots. I'm just not sure about this actress. She doesn't seem to have the charisma I'd want for Supergirl. She's actually kind of bland here.
ReplyDeleteShe just needs to dye her hair a bit blonder and she will be perfect
ReplyDeleteAwful
ReplyDeleteMaybe I've still got Laura Vandervoort, but she doesn't look right to me.
ReplyDeleteThese video ads are getting annoying. It lags my browser. You can't even pause it. Oh the custume looks ugly.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's what I'm missing. She needs to go full on blonde or full on dark if they want to vary from the comic. At least put some serious highlights in.
ReplyDeleteIt looks awful and i don't like one bit. I hope that this is a joke.
ReplyDeleteawful, i saw better cosplay costumes than this thing...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more . Just dye that hair Melissa
ReplyDeleteNot so sure about the costume. Hey, but at least it's not the same one as in the comic!picture above.
ReplyDeleteI voted "good". It's not anything new, but it's nice retro look.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fine
ReplyDeleteI am still very disappointed witch who they picked for this role tho
I was just going to say that, I'm glad they have covered her up a bit.
ReplyDeleteGiver her a chance...she's got the chops, just needed a decent show to prove it.
ReplyDeleteI personally think she looks great. I like the darker tone of the costume and "S" logo is pretty damn cool. Can't wait to see her in action.
ReplyDeleteI will give her a chance, i will still watch the show, but i am just saying i am disappointed, because i really hated her in Glee, but on the other side, everything about glee is terrible lately (sadly). And i was also hoping for Claire Holt, so that disappointed me too. I hope she will prove me wrong and will perform very well so i can enjoy the show
ReplyDeleteI like everything below the waist.
ReplyDeleteTom Welling was relatively unknown when he was cast.. and he worked out really well...:). I'll definitely tune in to this one as well.
ReplyDeleteI need to see it in motion... Flash's first promo pic looked really bad and it turned out to be pretty cool. I reserve my judgement.
ReplyDeleteEh. It's fine. The bar has been set considerably lower since NBC's attempt at Wonder Woman. They certainly haven't gotten any better in the DCU. I'm giving it a pass.
ReplyDeleteOh don't remind me of that aberration
ReplyDeleteLol.
ReplyDeleteNice cosplay.
I really like it. In fact I love it.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly my issue!
ReplyDeleteI wanted someone ... striking. Laura Vandervoort set the bar high.
This!
ReplyDeleteGrant Gustin comes from the same backround and The Flash is a hit and I hear no complaints about him.
It looks a bit like something one might expect from a 1960's "Home Ec" class for aliens acclimating to Earth... Just bad.
ReplyDeleteThe costume looks fine, the person filling it, not so much. ~_~
ReplyDeleteClaire Holt would rock the shit out of this costume. ^_^
^^ that actress makes me think of Ginny from Harry Potter tbh rather than Kara.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think I can say I prefer every single outfit Kara had in SV over that.
I was imagining something like the one Gal Gadot will use on SvB. This one looks kinda meh
ReplyDeleteNot feeling this..
ReplyDeleteLaura will always be Kara for me, I love her...and they're just doing a poor job with the new show, first the cast Melissa and now the costume, Im not at all sold on this show...
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S Supergirl!
ReplyDeleteDitto!
ReplyDeleteI still think and hope this is all a big bad joke...
ReplyDeleteThank you! I absolutely agree! (and call me crazy I don't watch Flash/Arrow but this looks much more fitting for the universe if they were to ever somehow cross them). This actually somehow looks more realistic ;)
ReplyDeleteI actually like who they picked to play her, at least she doesn't look like a fucking playboy bunny playing dress up but a real woman, the costume needs a bit of work.

ReplyDeleteSlap an S on it and it would fit perfectly in Arrow/Flash! (Which I do watch and love!)
ReplyDeleteFunny enough:

It looks like a bad halloween costume.
ReplyDeleteWow. I'm seeing all these comments eating awful actress, but people did say the same about Grant Gustins Flash and look how that turned out
ReplyDeleteBeen trying to cut that black background thing out and I still find it pretty depressing with those colors lol and why would they put her in that kind of setting? black background to an already too dark/bleak outfit? if they were going for hope I got a different feeling.

I never watched SV's final tbh so idk lol I do know I hate MOS's outfit and this kinda makes me think of it.
I wish I could be optimistic but well...
I like her but she looks way too old for the part.
ReplyDeleteNot that bad but nothing to talk about either. We'll see how it looks on-screen!
ReplyDeleteShe sure did set it high. Her casting was spot on, looked exactly like what I think Supergirl should look like.
ReplyDeleteThis actress needs to dye her hair blonder.
yeah she's basically Kara Kent pulled from the comics, Laura was amazing. You know part of me wishes this was a spin-off so Laura would be in it
ReplyDeleteyep, and i thought the actress would dye her hair, usually stuff like that doesn't bother me but Kara is a blonde woman
ReplyDeletei think every Smallvile fan out there can't see anyone else BUT Laura Vandervoort as Kara
ReplyDeleteyep i don't think anyone can beat Laura as Kara
ReplyDeleteyou're right, what Laura created when she became Kara is VERY tough to beat
ReplyDeleteLOL. It looks like a cosplay photo you'd find on Devianart.
ReplyDeleteI think she looks great. Can't wait for the series
ReplyDeleteI like it. Really works with the darker costume tone off the Arrowverse (if it is set there).
ReplyDeleteYes let's recast based off one promo pic. That's a fair and informed decision.
ReplyDeleteEh... it's okay I guess. It's a hard costume to pull off, and this is pretty decent.
ReplyDeleteOY that was a mess... talk about a costume that's hard to pull off....
ReplyDeleteAnd objectively even the Supergirl uniform can look a little silly. This looks as least silly as it possibly can. I'll take it.
Exactly. They muted the color a bit like they did for the feature film Supes suit Cavil wore without going too far and it's not skin tight because this is CBS after all. There's only so much you can do with a bright red and blue body suit with a huge cape attached.

Really hard to judge from a photo...They always look better on TV
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for something more modern, more innovative, like the pantsuit with wrap around cape. As long as the storylines are good, this will do.
ReplyDeleteThe actress needs to let her hair it's natural color which is brown.
ReplyDeleteLMAO! That description is awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that!
they should recast costume is okbut could be better
ReplyDeletenot just off this, i dont like her not for this role she just doesnt fit it to me, but everyone has there opinion
ReplyDeleteThe only "problem" (if you can call it that) I really had with Laura's casting was that I thought she was too old... other than that she definitely looked the part!

ReplyDeleteIt's not that bad but the shield and the lack of yellow is hurting my soul.
ReplyDeleteBut unless you've seen prior work, you're basing this off nothing but a still costume image. You can't judge her ability or performance off that.
ReplyDeleteLooks good, but I wish they hadn't made it look so much like the current superman outfit
ReplyDeleteDirty!
ReplyDeletei have seen her prior work and still dont like her sorry
ReplyDeleteOkay. We're cool then. My problem more stemmed from you seemingly dismissing her based off her appearance in the costume.
ReplyDeleteno, i just meant it adds to the fact i dont think that she suits the role
