Last week, word slipped out that work on the long gestating live-action Star Wars show was once again ramping up, and we've got some more information on how development is coming along and why you may still have to wait before you see it.
While last week's report about JJ Abrams possibly returning to direct Star Wars: Episode IX was sending the internet into all forms of speculation, our buds over at Making Star Wars dropped a quick scoop about how the House of Mouse is currently preparing for work on a live-action Star Wars show:
Oh yeah, my source also mentioned that a television series based in the Star Wars universe like Marvel’s Agents of Shield is ramping up a bit. I assume they don’t mean the premise is like Agents of Shield.
This is largely what we've been hearing too. We've heard for a while that Disney has been actively trying to get a Star Wars live-action series off the ground, and the fact that this news is popping up again means something changed or was figured out. This sent me digging for more and I've come up with some information on the development of the series that you may find interesting.

ReplyDeleteIt made practically zero sense that Star Wars never had a non-animated show in the first place. George really was holding Star Wars back. Almost immediately after he left we got movie announcements, an expanded effort into gaming, and now a live action TV show.

ReplyDeleteIf it hasn't changed then this is probably 'Star Wars: Underworld' which has been in development hell since 2005.
ReplyDeleteIt was meant to focus on the seedy underworld of Coruscant, in particular the cartels who control drugs and prostitutes. It was also meant to have an arc feel in a similar format to 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars'. One of the main characters was supposedly a Bounty Hunter too.
Last we heard they had 50 scripts completed but didn't have the funding to go ahead with it.
There already was one in development for a long time.
ReplyDeleteHe wasn't. Lucas planned a live-actions how years ago. He had like 50 scripts for episodes written. It was supposed to be about the time between Revenge and Hope but from a criminal standpoint. And there was already huge gaming efforts like Star Wars 1313 the first ever M rated Star Wars game. Footage was even shown at E3 then Disney cancelled it.

ReplyDeleteNo. Not everything needs to be on premium cable. Star Wars is and will always be a somewhat family friendly property, it just doesn't fit there.
ReplyDeleteThe most logical choice is ABC. More money than basic cable, Disney's main television network, more potential eyeballs and therefore marketing, especially for other ABC/Disney properties. ABC is the most obvious and best (IMO) choice. But if it came down to ABC favoring Marvel or SW I choose Marvel.
I feel like I have been waiting forever! I am def game!! But the problem might lie in Disney owning ABC and most likely would go on one of their channels. It would be great if we could get a premium channel behind them, but that seems unlikely.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually been disused/on the table for years and years. Before George Lucas sold it over, the last thing that was rumored was a combination of a Bounty Hunter/Underground series that morphed into following the likes of young Boba Fett and Quinlan Vos...
