Veteran Television Producer Clifton Campbell Signs On As Executive Producer and Showrunner
FOX has renewed mystery-adventure series SLEEPY HOLLOW for a third season, it was announced today by David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. Television producer Clifton Campbell has signed on as executive producer and showrunner.
“SLEEPY HOLLOW is truly inventive television. The talented producers – led by Alex, Bob, Len and Heather – along with the brilliant cast, anchored by Nicole and Tom, have created a fantastic world that brings ‘history’ to life with compelling and vibrant storytelling,” said Madden. “I had the pleasure of working with Clifton on both ‘The Glades’ and ‘White Collar.’ He is an excellent producer, and we can’t wait to see what this team has in store for Season Three.”

The jaw-dropping conclusion of Season Two left Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) with a decisive, albeit heartbreaking, victory over evil. In the name of good, Crane made the ultimate decision to kill his wife, Katrina Crane (Katia Winter). With evil seemingly at bay, the third season will explore how the partnership between Crane and Mills will evolve and what challenges these two witnesses will now face.

ReplyDeleteIt was basically the same last year. The only non ABC renewals from the upfronts that I recall were The Mentalist (CBS), Parenthood (NBC), Law and Order SVU (NBC), Hart of Dixie (CW), Beauty and the Beast (CW), The 100 (CW), About a Boy (NBC) and Hannibal (NBC) - 8 renewals. I still expect a few to happen this year too (maybe 5 or so).

ReplyDeleteYou need to start an anti-ship campaign so I can join, I have never hated shipping as much as I have this past year. Ruining all of my shows. My downtime on show sites due to the ridiculous comments, my fake friendships, everything. Sleepy Hollow and The 100 were the worst, shipping wise.

ReplyDeleteIf they want to have any hopes for a future, syndication is the only way to make it financially viable. Therefore, the lower the episode order, the harder will be to make it happen. With this order, it will need 2 more renewals to get syndicated. Still a lot but better than the 3 it would need with 13 episodes. Also why I expect it to become more procedural.

ReplyDeleteA lot of network producers seem to spend more time on Twitter than they do writing their shows. I don't even use Twitter much, but I feel like whenever I do, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (both of Once Upon a Time) are always spewing something dumb that indicates an unfavorable direction for the show and interacting with only the worst of fans.
ReplyDeleteThat's a big part of why I quit Once a few episodes into the third season. I lost all hope that the show could ever become what it easily could be. And from what I've heard, I wasn't wrong.
Point is: Twitter's fine for casual interaction and subtle teases. But don't treat your fans as if they're your bosses. Work in a collaborative team to tell a particular vision. If you do it that, you'll have fans. Maybe not the fans you started with, but fans nonetheless.
I've noticed that shows that cater heavily to their fandoms only seem to go down in both commercial and critical popularity pretty quickly. Glee's the strongest show to reference there.

ReplyDeleteAnd even if the showrunners dont pay attention to the fans the "suits" at the networks are, and they force changes on the writers of a show. If I was a showrunner I would make the show that I believe in with a healthy debate with the other members of the writing team but I also would only do a series on cable.

I don't even know any people in my closer circle of friends that use twitter, Facebook still serves as the main medium of communication there. Twitter is fandom-exclusive.

Good news I knew when they wanted to change showrunners that they would bring it back. I think 18 episodes will work out for them. I am surprised they got renewed before Bones but I think it will happen soon

ReplyDeleteTBH there hasn't been that much romance on Arrow aside from using Felicity for that, which is a bit of a diservice to the character in a way, but something that can usually be ignored. At least I can shut down the romantic aspect of Arrow.

Depends, sometimes it is a great moment of interaction, discussion and fun, especially when the showrunners don't comprise their shows for their fans - like Jason Rothemberg on The 1OO or Joel Wyman on Fringe, who stayed true to their own shows -, but then you have a show that tries to please everybody and fails misserably - Sleepy Hollow's writers -, and twitter only makes it worse

ReplyDeleteI must be remembering wrong. I definitely enjoyed season 1 a lot though. I'm normally not a fan of procedurals but there are/have been a few I've watched. I could enjoy SH as a procedural though, it just needs a lot of tweaking. Charmed managed to make it work for a long time.

There's "weird" Twitter, which has some genuinely funny people, and then there's the urban culture, and self-obsessed blogger parts of Twitter, but I like to pretend those latter two don't exist. They're pretty much the worst of civilized society as a collective.
ReplyDeleteFandoms aren't too much better, considering they're just overly entitled viewers who think they have leverage over a producer for being a consumer. You aren't owed your idealisms for simply being a consumer. You will get the product you were initially promised, or you will leave it be and get over yourself. Simple as that.
I avoid CW as a whole because my impressions of all of their shows seems to be tween soap operas catering exclusively to fandoms.

ReplyDeleteWHOOP! Couldn't be happier at this news. It was the only Fox show I was hoping for (since my Empire is clearly a juggernaut). I don't really care about much else on the network, but I sure love this little show. Glad it's getting 18 episodes again, too, as I think 13 gives fans too little to keep their attention over long breaks. And I personally loved the reset at season's end. I'm good whether it's procedural or serialized, but I do hope they leave Crane and Abbie as partners/friends for a good long while. Any romance has just dragged the show down. Just give me our ragtag team fighting evil and I'm a happy camper!

If I had not checked out this one fan site and been treated to some nasty comment and red some form Obessed Abbie fan that not only called the fans but the actress herself some nasty name calling. It I was the first time I checked out a site and has turned my stomach. I don't understand why people can not treat people with respect even if they don't agree with you. Ido think social media makes it easier to be nasty to people because you don't have to look them in the face when calling them names. I will not check out my other show because I know it will be going on those shows as well. I do know that if I hadn't checked out the site I would of been bummed that they killed her but would of watched it. I think people need to think sometimes before they says some thing. Remember there is a real human being on the other side of the computer with real feeling
ReplyDeleteGood thing Reign somewhat kept the balance of pleasing shippers and not pleasing them. I know hardcore Frary fans aren't liking what they're seeing with Season 2 but apart from the romantic lows, it's been a very decent season with the more political intrigue aspect of the show (i.e. Narcisse).

I just love Jenny and Abbie. I hate to miss them.
Abbie annoyed me to no end in season 2. I think that is the biggest trravesty of the season for me. She was this kick butt, fantastic character and they turned her into a harpy who could not get over the Crane marriage. It was frustrating and annoying when they could have so easily had Abbie, Katrina, and Jenny working together to make an unstoppable female power team. Their strengths complimented each other so it would have been so easy but instead it ended up in the same old same old vein - 2 women fighting over a man (or 3 in this case - Ichabod, Henry, and Abraham) and one woman largely absent from major screen time. It brought down both Abbie and Katrina, turning the show from the best potential into the biggest disaster of the season. Just terrible!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't watch the rest of season 2 either. Just know that everyone but Ichabod, Abbie, Jenny, and Iriving are dead. All the villains were lamely knocked off, Katrina was scapegoated, and they bascially hit a cosmic do-over button in the end so that literally nothing in season 2 was important except for the deaths.

ReplyDeleteThis show never had that many episodes. Season one was only 13 and season two 18. Critics believed the reason for season two's low ratings arose from the increased episode count, but I strongly disagree. We started off season two with incredibly lower ratings because Fox failed to promote the show in its off season and replay episodes in advance of the season. Perhaps they thought the show was self-sustaining and didn't require heavy promo based on season one's fantastic ratings; I can't think of any other logical reason as to why it was neglected. That coupled with the romantic drama and Katrina-focused episodes and plots caused the show to shed more viewers.They failed on so many levels this season, but the finale was excellent. I'd like to see MORE episodes, but I'm happy with the 18 and that Fox has enough faith in the show to allow it to redeem itself and didn't force them to scale it back.
ReplyDeleteAre they any good? I've never seen any of his work. I hope this decision was already in the making and Goffman's "exit" and new CBS was worked out just to keep things amicable for the media. I hope this wasn't a desperation decision!

ReplyDeleteI think Sleepy Hollow will keep things romance-free for awhile at least. It really brought down season two when it turned into a soap opera. Even the season one episodes when Katrina came on and they played that stupid string music in advance of her scene was a bit soap opera-ish and made me cringe. I think Ichabod and Abbie are adorable as a team and their natural banter will probably keep shippers satisfied. It would be unnatural for Crane to jump in anyone else's arms after offing his wife, so a safe bet is the show will revert to the insane action and craziness of season one...less the romantic violin music.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading. I appreciate it. For me when they killed Katrina, they killed any chance to redeem themselves in the two main issues I have about season 2. One, they could not go back and make Abbie and Katrina allies on the same side as a team with Jennie. I abhor how they turned two strong, female characters into the worst of stereotypes. Their interactions basically boiled down to two women fighting over a man - Ichabod, Henry, Abraham - complete with distrust, jealous sniping and backbiting. That was completely uncalled for. It's the worst thing they could have done with these characters and it made both come off as less than they were in season one. They had a chance to do something still fairly unique on TV, bringing 3 different women with different skill sets together in unity to accomplish a goal. That would have been powerful TV instead of this soap opera mess where Abbie actually came off as the worse of the two for me.
ReplyDeleteSecond, by killing off Katrina they bent to fan pressure. I hate when shows pander to fans because it means they are essentially handing the reins over to the most vocal fans instead of sticking with their own vision. I can almost promise that Ichabod and Abbie will hook up in one way or another because that is what the most vocal fans want. They've proven that they will give into fans if they howl enough in protest. No show works when its creative decisions are made by fan opinion and I can't imagine anything good coming from this one. It also means that the fandom will get even more demanding, resulting in zero fun interacting with the fandom, which can make or break a meh show for me. I stuck with Grimm through the lean season because the fandom was awesome. Most Sleepy Hollow fans have become obnoxious.
I don't see myself revisiting Sleepy Hollow on a weekly basis ever. However, if people I trust say that the changes made are in line with what I expected from the show this season, then I might marathon it over the summer. Mainly that would be a return to humor and action instead of emoangsty speeches and long periods of just emoting. It would include making Jenny a focal point since she's the only character I still like and who is still on the show. I would like to see Hawley and basic common sense and logic return as well. For that, the overall story would need to make sense and not feel like they are jumping all over the place trying to make something stick. I still maintain that the biggest problem the writers had (and there were a ton of them) was that they burned through too much plot in season 1 so when it came time for season 2 they had zero clue where to go from there. Killing off Moloch at midseason proved that they were desperate and winging it as they went. Nothing about the characters made sense much less the story.
As for Irving, I have no idea what to do with his character because the simple do-over, everything's now fine so-called resolution felt super cheap. It might have been the cheapest plot device in the entire show. They need to do something to bridge what happened to him or else they might as well have Bobby Ewing stepping out of the shower like someone else here stated. Mostly though any hint of hooking up Ichabod and Abbie needs to be eradicated. If they ever got together, I would never watch an episode again. I already can't stand either of them right now as individual people so that would be the absolute final straw for me. They need to redeem both characters from the mess they've become and that starts by having them interact more with other characters than each other.

ReplyDeleteThis is what I would've LOVED to see, yeah, the three women working together. I could've gotten behind the idea of Katrina being an evil character in some ways, as I think, done right, that could've been a fun role for Katia to play. But I mainly feared making her evil or killing her off would be an obvious, and rather cliché, way to make shippers happy (and this is coming from someone who likes both pairings, yet is pretty neutral on whether or not they remain canon or become canon or whatever-the shipping aspect either way was never a big thing for me with this show). This show, especially in its first season, was really good at subverting a lot of the clichés, and I think, if given the chance and opportunity by fans, they could've possibly done a lot more with the Katrina character that didn't involve either of those options. Like, for instance, having her work alongside Abbie and Jenny. It would've been awesome to see the three women teaming up and kicking ass.
And I'd also have been interested to see how her witch powers affected her life in the 21st century, or see how a woman from her era dealt with and viewed all the changes in a woman's life that she sees in the 21st century. Would that have affected which side she chose to fight on, would that have played a role in her interactions with modern women like Abbie and Jenny? Stuff like that? I just wish a lot of people who were so rabidly anti-Katrina would've considered other story options like that for her and allowed the writers to explore those possibilities, instead of just demanding she be killed off or turned evil.
That said, however, considering this IS a supernatural-based show, I don't rule out the possibility of supposedly dead characters ever coming back. And while I take your point about your complaints with some of the remaining characters, I still personally love Ichabod and Abbie and Jenny and Irving in general, and am anxious to see what next season will bring for them. I'm all for delving more into Abbie and Jenny's family and past, 'cause I think the episodes last season touching on that were quite good and lead to some really neat possible story ideas. I'd love more fun fish-out-of-water moments with Ichabod. And I'm interested to see how Irving can come back from his possession and brief "death", and try and regain his normal (relatively speaking) life. I'm still into the show itself in general and am looking forward to what this new setup does.
But I do understand and sympathize with many of your complaints, too, and am sorry you feel as you do about the show. Hopefully next season will have some stuff happening in it that can pull you back in, though :).
That's the unknown factor here because his other projects were so very different type shows from SH. I couldn't begin to apply the work on the other shows to a show so completely different in nature. I did see that he has previously collaborated with a show runner on SH who knows his work and that is why he was chosen.

Hahaha! Exactly! I love John Noble, but I was beyond sick of Henry. And I was sick of Katrina (and Ichabod) for constantly falling for Henry's tricks! Good riddance to them both!

ReplyDeleteSleepy Hollow and The 100 are the two shows that have the most annoying online fans IMO. And sadly they're my top fave network shows or high up there. The romance aspect is the least interesting and most pointless part of both shows yet that's all people wanna care about and talk about online. And people act like Bellamy and Clarke are an actual thing outside of their damaged minds and get all upset when they feel the show betrays them in some way. Lol. Maybe I should just avoid message boards for those shows.

ReplyDeleteJohn Noble is great, but I think Henry reached his plateau long ago. I hate that they made him the big bad reveal at the end of season one. I really liked him as the lovable sin eater on the good side. It was a great reveal but it's like they didn't know what they were going to do after they revealed it...season two's Henry reminded me of an 80s cartoon villain or something. Katrina seemed like the logical reveal as the big bad fresh out of purgatory. They wasted an opportunity to give her real purpose as well. Eh what's done is done, I suppose, but it sucks they had to resort to killing him off. Honestly though the Henry character did him no favors.
ReplyDeleteWhat show are you talking about because that was not happening on this one. I haven't seen anyone on twitter pushing the writers to develop a romance between the two stars. As for the storyline that shit was horrible and needed to be tossed out. Ichabbie is the main draw to the show romantic or not so fans wanting more of that dynamic should be expected.
ReplyDeleteIf the story is working fans won't be complaining about it but rejoicing in it like with Empire. Social media works for that show, same as with Scandal. Sleepy Hollow wasn't trying to please fans with their storyline just the opposite. They wrote a horrible season 2 and people responded, you can't have it both ways. Twitter works when fans are happy but it's a problem when fans are not.
ReplyDeleteExactly, twitter is exactly what it is. If writer goes on twitter then he is looking for some type of fan interaction and to guage the responses to their craft. This isn't something new networks have always measured fan response and catered to fans.
ReplyDeleteS1 was serialized and it worked just fine, it also had it moments of procedural aspects with the monster of the week. S2 just lost its way.

ReplyDeleteYou will have to stop watching TV because all shows have crazy fans on those sites. It is only a show, you shouldn't take it so seriously...there are far more real life issues to be this sensitive about. If you are underage, then I could understand.
