ReplyDeleteIt sounds like they're playing the odds. They're three Shondaland shows. They all have large casts and are prone to shocking moments. It's not out of the realm of possibility but it doesn't mean they have the inside line.

ReplyDeleteI beg to not be Grey's (though they haven't had a death since Heather Brooks but it was kind of meh), and honestly, I don't think the can afford to kill any more characters, except Richard but he just got Maggie and is trying to rebuild a relationship with Catherine so that would be stupid.
Remember Scandal killed off one character already when Columbus Short got the boot. However Scandal seems to be at the right point in its current arc for a death - bringing B613 back into the fray could involve just that. However, they wouldn't get an "onslaught" out of Scandal fans so that swings it over to Grey's

ReplyDeleteGrey's Anatomy: Callie, Richard, Owen Arizona or Bailey.
Scandal: A Pope parent, Jake, Eli or Cyrus, the problem here's that the most loved ed ones can't' be replaced.
HTGAWMurder: the season's over but I'd chose Asher.

ReplyDeleteHopefully Jake and Papa Pope are killed off of Scandal so they can end the stupid B613 storyline. Scott Foley has a show in development with Shondaland/ABC and Joe Morton is a lead cast member on the new show, Proof.
ReplyDeleteJake is an irrelevant character (bad actor playing an unemployed character who shows up to say a few lines in an episode and has no chemistry with Olivia) and Papa Pope's monologues have grown tiresome although Joe Morton is a great actor). So time to cut the cord and let the show move on to other storylines. They can do guest appearances in flashback if necessary like Dan Bucatinsky (James should not have been killed off).

Too many fans are wanting him dead and Shonda does the totally opposite of what fans want and like. She is evil like that. She would rather her ratings continue to drop and force a storyline for his useless character and push a juvenile triangle, dumb all the other talented cast down, than kill him off . But one can fantasize about his long overdue death

ReplyDeleteWhat better way to breath life into the show if it's protagonist Meredith Grey-Shepherd has to start over as a single mom to Zola and Derek Bailey well balancing a career, her new sister, father Richard, and sister in law Amelia, we'll dealing with dating and the single life after a year of dealing with the grief of losing her true love Derek.

ReplyDeleteI doubt it'll be anyone on Grey's... Shonda really can't afford to lose any more of her cast. And they all have contracts I believe. And I know she's petty but I doubt ABC would allow her to kill off anyone out of spite for wanting to leave, when they were probably the ones who ended up scrounging for those contracts.
HTGAWM death is embedded in the show's DNA so if anyone drops I doubt it will be shocking.
I'm gonna guess it's somebody on Scandal.

ReplyDeleteContracts only prohibit the actors from leaving on their own terms, their character can still be written/killed off at any given moment during the during the duration of the contract if TPTB want to.

I do know that the actress who plays Meredith, so sorry to have forgotten her name, but she said that she wouldn't think on coming back if Patrick wasn't back. BUT, she's already locked in for another season, and I'm pretty sure that every actor's contract has a clause about "X seasons or the death of his characters for creative reasons" (it would be silly not to). So they could do it, they have shown how Meredith can function without him, and to be with him became too much of a choice than a need, and if they're going with "back to the roots" with Derek cheating on her... I'd think it would be a Slam Duck!
And, truth be told, Patrick would be more than happy leaving Grey's. The only reason he still do it it's because it finances his racing passion, nothing more. His heart is not with the show!

ReplyDeleteIt has to be Derek from Grey's since the real life actor is having major real life issues and he's talked about leaving for several seasons. No one gives a crap about Karev because he's a non-lovable character and they can't kill off Meredith because she's been narrating the show from the future as she suffers from Alzheimer's. Scandal sucks and nobody gives a crap about that show so I doubt they'd kill off anyone on that show and How To Get With Murder is great but too new for anyone to feel connected to anyone.

I think all of them were somehow anticipated, even if I never actually saw them going ahead with killing Lexie Grey (Rip!).

ReplyDeleteThe only way I see Derek dying is if the actor Patrick Dempsey wants to leave the show. The same goes for Tony Goldwyn on Scandal. Even if Shonda Rhimes writes it, I don't see ABC allowing her to kill off two of the biggest female demo draws for both shows.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think she would pull it. The whole show is based on Olivia-Fitz, I really cannot imagine them ever finding a way to sustainably keep the show going long after that. Maybe as a final season sort of thing in which we then see Olivia settle or something, that yes. But ABC clearly has bigger plans for Scandal than having it end anytime soon, so that won't be happening.

ReplyDeleteThis is the part where I should tell you that Olivia and Fitz were never meant, in the beginning, to be such a huge part of the show. It was only after Shonda saw the huge chemistry Kerry and Tony had that she decided to incorporate it as a fundamental part of the show.

Besides, Scandal already has an expiration date on it. Shonda said it wasn't the type of show to last eight seasons, let alone ten. Which, considering the quality of the storylines from season three forward, is an accurate assessment of that statement (also, it might just be that Shonda has no idea on how to plan a show's history beyond its second/third season - Grey's started slipping in quality around season fourth).
Doesn't really matter what shows were meant for in the beginning. There are very few examples of shows that do not alter their plans accordingly. The only example in recent memory I can think of is How I Met Your Mother and although I personally loved the finale, it is probably the mos universally hated finale in the last few years (and that is quite the accomplishment considering the competition in the matter... cough True Blood cough). So she could have written Scandal entirely without them as a couple sure, but I do not see any conceivable way in which she does that now, 4 seasons in already. So that won't happen.
ReplyDeleteAs for its expiration date, I wouldn't put too much stock at what she says. She can resolve the main serialized storylines and still keep it going. As long as the show is as successful as it is, I say her will won't be as important as you think it is. ABC will ensure it stays on the air. I do happen to believe the show will not last thaaaat long though since it is so much built on buzz and plot twists that I don't think it has an inherent high longevity in it, but that means ratings will start to decline fast at some point and yes, the show will eventually end, but that has nothing to do with Shonda's will or lack of it, in my opinion.
As for your parenthesis, I found the late seasons of Private Practice their best by far, and miles better than Seasons 1 and 2, so I disagree with the overall comment about Shonda.

ReplyDeleteSome outlets and this site have commented that Shonda Rhimes may kill off the character of Fitz on Scandal. Shonda killing off Fitz would be Shonda axing her own show. The 10 million plus fans of Olivia and Fitz will be outraged beyond belief. The show will take a big nose dive and probably will not recover. Scandal will not be syndicated because it will not reach episode 100. We all know that syndication is where ABC will be making their real money! That being said Shonda Rhimes is not that stupid and ABC is not that stupid to let her do it.

ReplyDeleteI thought Season 3 was amazing already with the Violet storyline though the later portion of the War and all the love swap was a bit melodramatic but it worked for the show. But other than that yes, I agree. Season 5 was gold because of Amelia for me, I loved her storyline that year.
