Secrets and Lies - The Jacket - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers
22 Mar 2015
BA Reviews Secrets and LiesSecrets and Lies’ fifth episode (the halfway point of the season already - the season is moving far too quickly) is another strong one as we delve into yet another edition of ‘Ben suspects someone of Tom’s murder and tries to prove their guilt’.
One thing I need to mention about the show as a whole is that Secrets and Lies is digging itself a hole in focusing on Ben, yet have him attempt to solve the case. The Killing (which I’ve seen four episodes of - and this is true of those four; beyond that I don’t know) focuses mostly on the two detectives as they look to solve the case, and that allows a lot more of the case to be investigated. By focusing on Ben, it restricts the show to what it can do - a reason I’m quite glad that it is only a 10 episode season. What they’re doing is risky, and there is definite potential for the wheels to fall off.
Luckily though, ‘The Jacket’ creates the most intriguing suspect hunt yet as the show turns its attention to the Daly family. The Daly family consists of mom Lisa and sons Matt (who we met at Tom’s funeral) and Tyler. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to say that Tyler is in the episode, despite the ‘previously on’ reminding us of Lisa telling Ben that Tyler wasn’t back.
We get to see a lot of the family, particularly Tyler and Lisa, as a set of events lead Ben to suspect someone in the Daly household. I won’t divulge who, but it’s certainly interesting seeing Ben go about his suspicions that one of them had something to do with it.
Ben and Abby’s relationship is definitely my favourite thing about the show (close second is Dave - who is always great comic relief in a depressing show) and once again it is prominent this week. I like how close the two of them are despite everything that’s happened - and I think Ben likes it for the exact same reason - it allows him to escape the reality that his son is dead. They seem to be the only ones that can escape reality though, and there are some consequences to Abby throwing that punch in episode 3, and that leads to a particularly nice scene between her and Ben about halfway through the episode.
The jacket that Dave mentioned at the end of the previous episode is - unsurprisingly, given the title - an important thing in this episode. It does make an appearance in the episode and fuels a lot of what Ben does. Make of that what you will. Detective Cornell’s unhappiness with the way Ben is spending his days doesn’t stop him either - though that’s to be expected by now. We do get a brief insight into some of Cornell’s past, which was definitely necessary given how little we know about her so far.
Ben and Christy’s relationship is definitely the least interesting thing about the episode this week. It’s quite clear that he thinks that she is cheating on him - and I was inclined to concur with that assessment. Is she actually? You’ll have to watch to find out. KaDee Strickland does give a memorable speech near the end of the episode though, which does make up for things a little.
As usual, the episode does end on a cliffhanger and it’s a rather interesting one. It’s one that I didn’t really see coming until just before it happened, but there are hints throughout the episode that foreshadow it.
‘The Jacket’ airs on Sunday 22nd March at 9pm on ABC. Make sure to tune in and then return to SpoilerTV to vote in our episode poll and discuss the episode. Below are some dialogue teases from the episode. Please feel free to leave a comment with your guesses as to who said what and I will fill in the speakers for each quote on Sunday.
"You need to learn the difference between right and wrong."
“You need water anytime soon?”
"You're much more fun."
“Dude, if I don’t get my 14 hours I’ll kill somebody.”
“Family should be together."
"There's no way he did anything to Tom."
“I can’t tell you what I want.”
“I think you’re losing your mind.”
"Who the hell do you think you are?”
"I'm never telling Dave anything again."

Thanks for the preview. I understand your point about it being risky to focus on the suspect but i like the dimension it adds. We are able to see things in a different perspective than usual while also allowing for a more "personal" (for the lack of a better word) storytelling. But yes 10 episodes is perfect as it has obvious limitations on what can be done. I am really digging the show so far
ReplyDeleteThanks for the preview :) Focusing on Ben certainly limits the show but it's an aspect I love about it. It's refreshing seeing this kind of story from a different point of view, like on OUAT, it's really interesting to be seeing the stories told from the villains POV in 4B. It helps that the cast are excellent as well, Ryan & Juliette especially. OUAT and S&L don't sound compatible at all but I love watching them both together, I'm looking forward to Sunday.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do like the dimension the show has focusing on Ben. Personal is about the right word I'd use to describe it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm really enjoying it so far too.
That sounds interesting on OUAT - seems very outside the box. Changing up the perspective from which the show is never a bad thing itself, but the show does have to deliver with the storytelling.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy both shows :)
Why do I have a feeling that his wife has something to do with it?No focus on her as yet but she is taking all of this too calm.I get that she may not be that type of character but sometimes her mannerisms and facial expressions are too calm.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for tonight's episode.
ReplyDeleteNice preview! You're lucky to have seen the episode already. Looking forward to watching it. I've been really enjoying the series so far.
ReplyDeleteI really LOVE this show and I know it's highly doubtful but I'd actually like them to fined away to bring it back for a season two.
ReplyDelete( maybe we the audience could find out who did it in the finale and then season two could be them covering their tracks to not get caught or have he show focus on the towns resident's putting their lives back together after the murder is revealed. )
As I understand it, if it gets a second season, it will be a new mystery.
ReplyDeleteI don't want a new show with new characters. like American Horror Story does. I want Ben, Christy, Natalie, and Abbe in season two.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd like these characters in a second season but the problem is that to do so as you suggested in your original comment, it would get away from the original premise and likely not be that good.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your insights. I review the show over at TV Fanatic. I'm loving the fact that we're getting the answers in the finale :-)
ReplyDeleteThat could be kinda sorta interesting if done well considering who the killer is. The fallout would make good TV.
