Ratings Breakdown:
The ongoing juggernaut on Fox called “Empire” scored what could be an historical record with its eighth consecutive week of overnight household growth. It topped the night at a 9.6 rating/15 share from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 33 percent above the second half of “American Idol” on the year-ago evening (7.2/11 on 3/05/14). It was four percent above the 9.2/14 last week. And it built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Idol” (6.9/11) by 39 percent. Keep in mind that the 9.2 rating in the overnights last week translated into 13.90 million viewers and a 5.4 rating/15 share in adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data.
Eight-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12 – 8.2/13 – 8.8/13 – 9.2/14 – 9.6/15. While “NCIS: New Orleans” on CBS may be the most-watched new primetime series this season, “Empire” is the breakout success.
Aforementioned “Empire” lead-in “American Idol,” meanwhile, scored a dominant 6.6/10 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was seven percent below the 7.1/11 one week earlier.
In series-premiere news, “CSI: Cyber” on CBS led the Wednesday 10 p.m. hour with a 6.4/11 in the household overnights. Comparably, this was seven percent above the series-premiere of former time period occupant “Stalker” on 10/01/14 (6.0/10). The overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Criminal Minds” (6.5/10) was 98 percent. And the household rating at 10:30 p.m. was consistent at a 6.4 – all good things. But, given the mountain of promotion, initial sampling for “CSI: Cyber” really could have been larger (and the expected the audience is expected to mirror 50+ driven “Criminal Minds”).
Earlier in the evening on CBS, episode two of this new edition of “Survivor” was consistent from one week earlier at a third-place 5.5/ 9 in the household overnights from 8-9 p.m. And that translated into a solid 2.4 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, based in the Live Plus Same Day data last week. But the first half of a clips edition of NBC’s competing “The Voice” (5.7/ 9) actually had a slight advantage. We’ll see what the demos look like.
“Criminal Minds” on CBS at 9 p.m., meanwhile, scored a comfortable 6.3/10 from 9-10 p.m., which opposite “Empire” on Fox dropped by 10 percent year-to-year.
Over at ABC, overnight results were virtually flat from one week earlier care of “The Middle” (#4: 5.3/ 9), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.9/ 8), “Modern Family” (#3: 6.1/ 9), “black-ish” (#4: 4.3/ 7) and three year-old “Nashville” (#2: 3.6/ 6). And while “The Goldbergs” did dip from “The Middle,” these almost identical overnights last week translated into a 2.5 rating/8 share in adults 18-49 for “The Goldbergs” out of a 2.0/ 7 for “The Middle.” That said, ABC could very easily move “The Goldbergs” into the Wednesday 8 p.m. anchor half-hour next season if it wants to utilize “The Middle” elsewhere (or not issue a seventh season renewal).
Elsewhere, the aforementioned two-hour “The Voice” clips show resonated with a 5.7/ 9 from 8-10 p.m., which is certainly a “winner” given this was more or less a repeat. And it led into an encore telecast of “Chicago PD” at a 3.5/ 6 at 10 p.m. (#3), which was just one-tenth of a rating point below competing “Nashville” on ABC.
The CW capped off the night with a repeat of “Arrow” (#5: 0.9/ 1) and an original installment of “The 100” (#5: 1.0/ 2), which managed to build by one-tenth of a rating point (or 10 percent).
