Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy overnight victory for NBC, which featured two more hours of bona fide hit “The Voice” (#1 for the night: 9.5 rating/15 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m.) and week two of the sophomore season of medical drama “The Night Shift” (#1: 4.3/ 8 at 10 p.m.). Although “The Night Shift” did build by an impressive 26 percent week to week, overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (9.6/15) was still only 45 percent.
In season-premiere news, Kevin Bacon drama “The Following” returned on Fox with a fourth-place 3.2/ 5 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was down by a hefty 29 percent from the 4.5/ 7 for the second-season opener in the time period (on 1/27/14), which was already down by double-digits from 2013. And the overnight retention for “The Following” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Gotham” (4.2/ 6) was so-so at 76 percent. One week earlier, “Sleepy Hollow” closed the season (or series) at a 2.8/ 4.
Overall, Fox’s demo friendly “Gotham” scored a 4.2/ 7 from 8-9 p.m., which was on par with typical levels.
Excluding “Mike & Molly,” CBS was in repeats last night. An encore of “The Big Bang Theory” (in place of regularly scheduled “2 Broke Girls”) finished third in the 8 p.m. half-hour with a 5.7/ 9, followed by the “Mike & Molly” original at a second-place 6.0/ 9 at 8:30 p.m. Next on the Eye net was a repeat of hit freshman “Scorpion” at a third-place 4.8/ 8 from 9-10 p.m., which clearly demonstrates the potential value of the drama in off-network. And it led into a repeat of the successfully relocated “NCIS: Los Angeles” at a second-place 4.2/ 8 at 10 p.m.
Over at ABC, relationship/reality mainstay “The Bachelor” was on the map with a 6.0/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was on par with a 90-minute edition on the year-ago evening. But, airing opposite NBC’s “The Voice,” it trailed by 37 percent.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was a repeat of the debut episode of Sunday drama “Secrets and Lies” at a third-place 2.7/ 5.
The CW capped off this first Monday in March with encore telecasts of dramas sophomore “The Originals” and critically acclaimed “Jane the Virgin,” which each averaged a 0.5/ 1 and both are confirmed to return next season.

Horrible for The Following
ReplyDeleteOk for TNS but it had no competition last night
The Following is getting cancelled 100 percent. It did badly even without Scorpion.
ReplyDelete76% retentation is so-so? Mark, the Following didn't do well, but saying that 76% retention is "so-so" is ridicoulous.
ReplyDeleteSurprised by The Night Shift. Who would have thought it would increase on week 2?
Will wait for the demos before judging The Following. But at least Gotham is super steady! Lets see if the month long break will hurt it.
ReplyDeleteOMG, that's S&L repeat was strong
ReplyDeleteNo NCIS LA and Castle originals helped it.
ReplyDeleteIts retentation out of Gotham looks better than Sleepy Hollow's retentation was.
ReplyDeleteZero competition helped ;)
ReplyDeleteSure, but I've seen shows facing no competition and decreasing either way on week 2. And a 26% margin is still impressive
ReplyDeleteIf it gets between 1.5-1.8 demo wise for the season it'll be renewed, FOX have much bigger issues not named Empire and Gotham. There only hits this season.
ReplyDeleteLikely no competition helped The Night Shift than it actually finding a real audience. However, under 50% retention is still really bad for any post The Voice show.
ReplyDeleteIts getting about 1.4-1.6 at max for premiere. And it will go down when Scorpion returns.
ReplyDeleteABC wants for Secrets and Lies to succeed. They gave it a good lead-in and it didnt do bad for repeat.
ReplyDeleteDepends on whether NBC is willing to be patient. If it demonstrates growth as the season goes on, I can see it being renewed, especially given its other midseason shows are flops.
ReplyDeleteNice increase for the Night Shift. Very encouraging news for NBC which will certainly stick with it now to see if the growth is a trend.
ReplyDeleteI thought The Following would do bad.
ReplyDeleteI will never understand why some people care about retention so much but 76% retention should be good. I think Sleepy Hollow was getting 60% retention out of Gotham.
ReplyDeleteMike And Molly was good last night and will be renewed
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that some shows are doing a lot worse I think The Following's fate will depend on how it performs without Gotham.
ReplyDeleteIf NCIS: LA or Castle are off, then I think that they will be patient. However, I'd be surprised if the ratings hold with increased competition. Unfortunately, NBC ha experienced numerous bumps where ratings increase only due to having no competing competition.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think it's certain to be renewed :)
ReplyDeleteThe concept of the show had so much potential, but it got bogged down with awful writing and ridiculous villains.
ReplyDeleteThe thing with Mark is that he is very selective as to which retention is good: Mom at 68% he called solid. The Following at 76% is so-so. I have no doubt that The Following will have an underwhelming premiere rating-wise, but its retention is not so-so
ReplyDeleteGotham is in hiatus for five weeks. Not good for The Following.
ReplyDeleteNBC has so many problem spots now, they will have no choice but to stick with it. Though the trade-off of TBL to Thursday is resulting in a net negative. Always a risk - especially with its biggest scripted fare. CBS hurt two slots this season by swapping TAR/CSI for MS/Stalker. Sometimes it works.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I was hooked in the beginning, but then just lost interest:(
ReplyDeleteWell, The Following faded fast over the years
ReplyDeleteAwful retention TNS. I bet the people involved with this show now are wishing NBC let it stay in the summer.
ReplyDeleteso CW having crap ratings all the time & their shows don't get cancelled, give me a break, CW is Not new, it is CBS & Warner , they should demand better ratings
ReplyDeletegrowth Its Retention out of the Voice is 45%
ReplyDeleteI agree. Marc's double standard with a lot of tv shows is just becoming laughable instead of annoying.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that every time I feel Gotham gets great they take a break? And you'd think they'd want the lead in for the following
ReplyDeletePer Marc Berman "“The Night Shift” did build by an impressive 26 percent week to week." Yes, growth. Retention is irrelevant, dramas are renewed based on their performance against each other. NBC's scripted average is around a 1.1.
ReplyDelete1.6 for the following
ReplyDelete1.4 for the night shift
ReplyDelete2.0 for Gotham
ReplyDeleteThe voice 3.6/4.0
ReplyDeleteThe bachelor 2.4
ReplyDeleteWow, that's terrible. NBC really needs to consider pulling it away form Mondays.
ReplyDeleteA repeat of S&L did a 1.0 with 4 million
ReplyDeleteThere's massive rejection from TNS: 1.7/1.1 In the half hours
ReplyDeleteThe Night Shift half hours are pretty scary
ReplyDelete1.7/1.1
So The Night Shift didn't rise at all, HH deceived me again.
ReplyDeleteOK start for The Following. Predicted the 1.6
Yikes
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed The Bachelor.... :)
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!! :(
ReplyDeleteFOX has only 4 episodes of Gotham left for 11 weeks of the remaining TV season.
ReplyDeleteI don't if this is scary or just funny lol
ReplyDeleteSecrets and Lies repeated ok. But repeats don't usually mean increase for next airings, but at lest it got a bit more eyeballs
ReplyDeletePeople are not liking what they see. That's a frightful drop.
ReplyDeleteFunny for us... Scary for NBC
ReplyDeleteYup ( the show is not that great )
ReplyDeletearen't there 6? I think they are at episode 18 and the season is 22 episodes
ReplyDeleteSeriously NBC, pull this. It's horrible.
ReplyDeleteWait till you see the half hours
ReplyDelete1.7/1.1
They won't pull it.
ReplyDeleteIt does seem to have some really passionate fans, a few whom I have seen on this site.
ReplyDeleteThey have nothing to put there.
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is I think you may be right. But a 1.1 is lower than Ready For Love or any show after The Voice. It's really embarrassing for NBC.
ReplyDeleteNBC needs to send The Night Shift to Fridays, Grimm to Thursdays after The Blacklist, pull Allegiance and premiere something out of The Voice, either AD, Odyssey or whatever, but they can't keep up with this
ReplyDeleteThe voice already in the 3s
ReplyDeleteThere's massive rejection from TNS: 1.7/1.1 In the half hours
ReplyDeleteThey can always premiere Aquarius earlier. They have AD and Odyssey waiting in the wings too. All of them can be rushed to beneffit from The Voice
ReplyDeleteWhat horrible numebrs for TNS, NBC shouldnt have move The Blacklist.
ReplyDeleteAt this point I would consider Dick Wolf reading the phone book. Anything to get a 1.1 off The Voice.
ReplyDeleteYeah, but that's ok, it's still pretty highly rated and it is holding a bit better than during the fall
ReplyDeleteI know but it's way too long of a break right when they need it ... Bad scheduling
ReplyDeleteUnless they move Aquarius from the summer or premiere Odyssey after the Voice and put a Talking Bible after A.D, they have nothing to put there.
ReplyDeleteTrue but it's less competiton from the fall
ReplyDeleteMike & Molly delivered the same rating it did a year ago, and with a weaker lead in. This show is a real staple for CBS!
ReplyDeleteGood ratings for Mike and Molly, and decent for Scorpion repeat too, up against a big The Voice. The 2 shows seem pretty compatible. I hope CBS realises this and keeps M&M there rather than use it to plug a gap when another show fails
ReplyDeleteWell they always have Dateline. So if Aquarius isn't ready, there's that.
ReplyDeleteThe Night Shift though has to move to Fridays. I agree with those that are suggesting that.
Lol.
ReplyDeleteQuitting has just reached another level.
Year to year comparisons:
ReplyDeleteThe Voice: 4.5 vs 3.8 (-15%)
Mike&Moly: 2.2 vs 2.2 (no change)
The Following: 1.6 (not premiere, March airing) vs 1.6 (no change)
I commented about that above. It's a disaster for NBC. There's really no way to spin it but terrible.
ReplyDeleteNot a great start for The Following considering next week it won't have a new Gotham lead in and will be up against an original Scorpion, altho I doubt Scorpion and TF share the same audience
ReplyDeleteAquarius without any promotion? Nah. And A.D. is supposed to be a miniseries, so why waste The Voice lead-in when they can't get any long-term benefit.
ReplyDeleteBetween Bones, Sleepy Hollow and The Following, how many bubble dramas will Fox carry?
ReplyDeleteI think Odyssey looks good, but I would not expect the NBC audience that did not watch State of Affairs or Allegiance to watch Odyssey either.
ReplyDeleteHere are the 1/2 hr breakdowns

I don't buy the premise of a miniseries; the Bible was supposed to be a miniseries and NBC found a way to capitalize on it.
ReplyDeleteMiniseries are only miniseries when they rate badly
Winners: The Voice, The Bachelor, Mike and Molly
ReplyDeleteHonorable Mention: Gotham
Losers: The Night Shift
I think The Following did okay. It grew from the final after almost 10 months of hiatus. It could have been way worse. I think it will settle at around the same level SH would have done of 1.3
Episode 18 aired yesterday, so they have only 4 left.
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't premiere A.D early. It's purposely premiering on Easter Sunday.
ReplyDeleteOuch at that 1.7/1.1 for Night Shift, wonder if Odyssey will get early premiere or they move PD. That should be unacceptable.
ReplyDelete1.6 for The Following, while pretty poor is still well within FOX's renewal territory.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a risk, but it would be better to try out rather than doing nothing
ReplyDeleteYep, that's a massive drop between 1/2 hrs.
ReplyDeleteThere was a one minute The Voice overrun. The half rating is closer to The Night Shift's true rating.
ReplyDeleteNBC prides itself on The Voice as a lead in, more than even Thursdays. I'm not sure what the best option is, but Greenblatt will do something. Even patient NBC can't be patient with a 1.1.
ReplyDeleteThat is a horrible horrible half hours drop
ReplyDeleteWhy I would hardly call AD a continuation of The Bible since it has a all new cast. And NBC is the one to take the term more seriously. The Slap is a miniseries and they said that at the winter TCA's 2014.
ReplyDeleteSo they have left 19, 20, 21 and 22. Got it ;)
ReplyDeleteThey may just wait for their vest new show to put on Mondays, but I think moving PD shouldn't be overlooked.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, they need to move Grimm ASAP. No veteran should be on Friday at this point, and its not like its helping anchor a new show or anything.
I'm pretty sure that if The Slap was a big hit, NBC would have renewed it and worked it out as an anthology series. AD acts as an anthology series of The Bible.
ReplyDeleteUTD was called a miniseries on its first season and then it got renewed for season 2.
Until I see a miniseries rating high and not scoring a renewal, I won't believe there is such a thing as miniseries, unless they rate bad or air on the UK
Blacklist needs to move back to Mondays and regain it's crown... They are killing it with this move
ReplyDeleteNBC mocked CBS at the same TCA for renewing UTD and said that the same won't be the case for The Slap.
ReplyDeleteNow i`m worried about Undateable and One Big Happy
ReplyDeletePD after The Voice sounds like a good idea. CF has done quite well after The Voice, so it could work out great.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, Grimm needs to help on the weekday; it won't do 2s, but it will surely do mid to high 1s, something more than acceptable. It can really support Thursdays or even Wednesdays at 10 if PD moves to a post Voice slot
We can't know with The Slap because it was a total flop, but I'm sure that if it was a hit they would just say "sorry, our bad, this is an anthology series, actually."
ReplyDeleteNo network gets rid of high rated show, regardless of how they are labeled
And what would they put on Thursdays? Blacklist may not be ratings as high as it was following The Voice, but it's the only thing holding up the night
ReplyDeleteCW shows do too get cancelled with bad ratings, but like evey network ,they can't cancel everything so they keep Acouple low rated bubble dramas around. Why do you care so much if CW has bad ratings or not anyway?Youre not in charge of it.Last night were reapets of serialzed shows so if course they weren't gonba get good ratings.CW may not be new but they're only 8-9 years old,new/young compared to the Big Four.Mr P Edowitz said ratings only make up 20% of his cancel /renew decisions.CBS dosent wantCW to becompetive with the Big 4 according to speculation and CBS has been critized for treating Czw like a side business(which ii is).CbS has said CW is profitable due to DVD,streaming ,syndication so even with low ratings, they're making money. The ratings landscape has changed a lot in the last few years with ratings getting & lower with few expections(like Empire),.At least Arrow,Flash and sometimes SPN can or have tied or beaten completion on the Big 4.
ReplyDeleteThink of it being a temporary nursing home for PD just for the rest of the year. They need to support a new show next year as well, and a moce for PD should be planned out to make it a new staple in the schedule. I think it can grow and bring its newfound audience with it, not sure where though. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteWhat would be the point in renewing it? How many times can Joe Carroll escape getting killed?
ReplyDeleteI think that if the Chicago Med pilot works out, NBC has to nurture all Dick Wolf's shows. I would actually give it the post Voice slot next season. Otherwise they would be risking yet another failure post Voice.
ReplyDeleteAs many as the viewers keep it at renewable levels
ReplyDeleteI don't consider The Following a loser. Up from 10 months ago, and above all Sleepy Hollow this season.
ReplyDeleteThey could put anything else on Thursdays ... lord knows it's not salvage able at this point anyways
ReplyDeleteThe Blacklis at a 1.9 on Thursday begs to differ.
ReplyDeleteI actually have been convinced that Chicago PD after The Voice may be the best move. There you have a saving grace on Thursdays (Blacklist) and a show that could actually score 2s after The Voice (Chicago PD)
A 1.9 is pitiful for a show that would get high 2s-low 3s post the voice, it is scheduled against monster Scandal and between 2 losers... At least give the show something to work with if you are going to throw it to the dogs like that... It should've stayed behind the voice and keep Mondays strong... Figure out something else for the rest of your days and if all else fails air repeats of the voice
ReplyDeleteThe Blacklist was getting 2.4s following The Voice during the last straing of episodes during the fall. That's not high 2s-low3s.
ReplyDeleteIt is actually giving the NBC something to stand on Thursdays, which is why I don't expect it to move
I agree
ReplyDeleteYeah in the last few eps but on average throughout its run it is what I said.... It could have easily rebounded especially given the Super Bowl airing... I think it was a stupid move and NBC is paying for it... Mondays were perfect but now they need to hope for a new hit post voice which is unlikely as evident by State of Affairs and now TNS
ReplyDeleteI keep seeing "The Following did badly" or along them lines everywhere in the comments. I don't think it did that badly, it improved a tiny bit from the finale. What does think it should have gotten?
ReplyDeletethere is a new nemesis this season....duh
ReplyDeleteAGREE
ReplyDeletewhy all this jabber about Lead ins. a show should stand on its own, I NEVER watch a show, because it comes on after what I just watched...
ReplyDeleteI don't get why FOX is scheduling it this way. I think Sleepy Hollow should have gotten a two hour finale and The Following a two hour premiere. Those would be 2 additional solid hours of Gotham to air later on. They probably should have also aired one extra Sleepy Hollow in January to force it to end two weeks earlier.
ReplyDeleteThe way they've scheduled they have too many originals to air in the 9pm hour without time to air them all (the following will end up airing the summer) and not enough originals to air in the 8pm hour until the end of the season, which is pretty poor scheduling.
Agreed, I don't know why it gets a lot of hate.
ReplyDeleteI think it will settle at around 1.3-1.4 after a few episodes. I'm hoping though for it to settle at a 1.4 as most of the season 2 got a 1.4.
I don't think it did badly. People are extremely hateful of the show and love to find any excuse to hate on it. I think it did okay. It didn't exactly set itself up very well to withstand the drops that are surely coming but it did okay given where it ended.
ReplyDeleteWhat? It's finally found it's feet. A 1.9 is the best NBC has had for a long while on Thursday. Expect season 3 to be there next year, hopefully not surrounded by giant bombs either side of it.
ReplyDeleteNeither do I, up from ten months ago (if only slightly) and bettering Sleepy's recent efforts. The real test will be no Gotham.
ReplyDeleteIt should have a stable audience, it will probably settle at a 1.3-1.4. I can't remember, but do you know what it's lead in was last year?
ReplyDeleteIf it settles at 1.4 it would actually be an improvement over last year considering the usual y2y depreciation that broadcasters go through and I think that stability after 10 months of hiatus could be worthy of bringing back. But I don't want to get my hopes up just yet since the show has a big history of falling so I am doubting it can do that well. It also won't help that Scorpion will be back and that Gotham will be on repeats pretty much the entire time until the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteAlmost Human and Bones for a bit at the end
ReplyDeleteThanks! I forgot about Almost Human, even though I watched it.
ReplyDeleteHahaha. Don't worry, so did Fox.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the show should be able to stand on it's own, as the show does tend to drop a lot (like you said) a good lead in would've helped a bit.
ReplyDeletePretty poor scheduling from FOX if you ask me. I don't know why they changed The Following's 2hr premiere to a single episode. They could've also had SH as a 2hr finale.
Yes! I just commented on the exact same thing elsewhere! It makes no sense since they have too many originals to air in the 9pm hour without time to do so and not enough for the 8pm hour. Horrible scheduling.
ReplyDeleteBad for The Following, guess waiting that long didn't help. Castle doesn't have to worry about Secrets and Lies. Night Shift did better because their was no NCIS LA and Castle. Good for Mike and Molly. The Voice and Bachelor keep on going
ReplyDeleteYep, totally agree.
ReplyDeleteFOX will probably still carry Bones no matter how bad their ratings are when they come back because FOX makes money from it in syndication. As for between Sleepy and Following it probably depends if Following drops too much. Without new Gotham leading into The Following and going up against Voice and Scorpion, it will be hard for them to retain good demo numbers
