Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

Ratings Breakdown:
Minus mega-hit “Empire,” which concluded season one last week, Fox still managed to win in the Wednesday overnights. But a 6.2 rating/10 share in households for “American Idol” from 8-10 p.m. paled in comparison to the 10.8/17 for the two episodes of “Empire” last week. And this was six percent below the 6.6/10 for “Idol” on the year-ago evening. Regardless, there is no reason to believe this is the final season of the veteran singing competition.
Next was CBS with its combination of always reliable “Survivor” (#2: 5.7/ 9), which should having no difficulty topping the 8 p.m. hour in the key demos, veteran “Criminal Minds” (#1t: 6.3/10) and week four of “CSI: Cyber” (#1: 5.2/ 9). Dominance is a positive, of course, and “CSI: Cyber” has indeed leveled off. But a 5.1 rating in the household overnights last week only equaled a 1.4 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (out of a 2.3/ 7 for two episodes of “Survivor), based on the Live Plus Same Day data. And this is not much of an improvement from recent on-the-fence occupant “Stalker.” The bottom-line: CBS can do better and bringing back parent “CSI” for one final season (abbreviated, perhaps) is a better idea than keeping “CSI: Cyber” on the air.
ABC had nothing unusual to report with its sitcom combination of “The Middle” (#3: 5.0/ 8), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.5/ 7), “Modern Family” (#2: 6.0/10) and “black-ish” (#3: 4.4/ 7), which is likely to be revamped next season. One potential option could be to move “The Goldbergs” into the 8 p.m. lead-off spot, which generally builds from “The Middle” by about three-tenths of a rating in adults 18-49. And “The Middle” could, perhaps, be used to strengthen Tuesday or Friday, if it does return.
At 10 p.m. on ABC was “Nashville: On the Record 2,” featuring members of the cast performing their favorite songs, as a distant third-place 2.9/ 5. Thump!
Elsewhere, NBC was at typical Wednesday overnight levels care of dramas “The Mysteries of Laura” (#4: 4.6/ 8), veteran “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 4.2/ 7) and sophomore “Chicago PD” (#2: 4.3/ 7), which should be competitive with competing “CSI: Cyber” for first in the 10 p.m. hour adults 18-49. And The CW capped off this final Wednesday in March with “Arrow” (#5: 2.0/ 3) and relocated “Supernatural,” which slipped by 37 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Arrow” (1.9/ 3) and was down by 33 percent from year-ago occupant “The 100” (1.8/ 3 on 3/26/14). To the fans of “Supernatural”: Don’t shoot the messenger, but these overnights could be better.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

Nashville On the Record pulled 1.0 in the demo last year. It would be about the same this year. I don't think anyone was expecting it to match a regular episode but is better than a repeat.

ReplyDeleteIt's clear that the writers don't care about the show. As far as I'm aware, I think about half of them have other jobs that are more catered to their interests (like I think a few of them write comic books). My guess is is that they work on Supernatural for the paycheck so they can peruse their actual interests. I think it's time to clean house, well mostly.

ReplyDeleteLook at the villains we used to have. Azazel, Lillith, Lucifer, Ruby, hell even Dick Roman. Now what do we have? Rowena and Metatron. Really? Yet we have one episode with Cain which could have been a season long arc (his genocide). They can't even remember the veil plotline! It's not been mentioned once this year. I'm so frustrated because the world of Supernatural is so rich, there are so many things that could happen. Yet we get this drivel?

ReplyDeleteCW moved supernatural to the wrong fast now it can't stand another move. But I aL guess this is the way Pedowitz dies things, he would refuse living Reign to Friday, SPN to Thursday then launching two new shows out of Flash and Arrow.

True. SPN had lots of 1.3HH last spring, but demo was much higher. This year 1.3s are bad, its 0.6-0.7 demo, when last year it was mostly 0.7-0.8.

This morning the album for this special was number 3 on iTunes. Meaning they were able to make some semblance of a profit off this special now versus next to nothing for a repeat.

ReplyDeleteHopefully they announce season 11 as the last though at this point is a season 11 needed? All Carver is going to do is drag this already shitty MOC storyline out for another season. They dont know what to do with Cas, Crowley is a joke, they dont have a big bad and its gotten to the point of Sam who? Theres too much fan service (to certain sections of the fandom), too much poor use and over use of guest stars, too much of the writers writing for themselves/inserting themselves into the story via certain characters not to mention 2 leads who want more time off.

ReplyDeleteI think Goldbergs essentially took Suburgatory's place on the schedule, for the better.
I since another fluke low for all comedies eventually. Goldbergs has gone as low as a 1.7 this season.
Dont blame the time slot for SPN's poor ratings, it was getting 0.8/0.7's on Tuesday and with the writing was getting worse by the episode, boring storylines and arrogant writers/show runner it was only a matter of time before the ratings stared to reflect what was being shown on screen. The decline has been steady this season so how the move can be blamed I dont know?!

The viewing levels are increasing throughout the evening until the beginning of the 10 p.m. hour when they start to go down again.

ReplyDeleteSHIELD didnt help the show at all when it was at 9 pm. Im glad ABC gave it a chance and it's worth it. You see how FoTB did those days it was on wednesday, teh show performed well but going to it's time slot ii has been dropping week by week.
ReplyDeleteYes, that is exactly what it means. The 8h30 comedies are expected to do better than the 8h00 comedies for two reasons:
ReplyDelete1) Local programming is supposed to be a worse lead-in than the 8pm comedy (unless it is a flop, which isn't the case here)
2) Viewing levels spike in a relatively significant manner from 8 to 8h30. Season to date, my estimates claim viewing levels in the 8pm half hour have averaged a 29.5 PUT and a 32 PUT in the 8.30 pm half hour, which is not irrelevant.
This means that, if say, the 8h00 comedy does a 2.1 and the 8h30 comedy does a 2.1 (think Mike and Molly and 2 Broke Girls for instance), the 8h00 comedy is stronger. It is an imprecise thing to quantify exactly how much growth is enough growth for the 8h30 to be stronger than the 8h00 one, but most people agree that what The Goldbergs has done this year is enough for it to be stronger than The Middle, even accounting for the two aforementioned reasons (even if the difference is much lower than what raw numbers indicate).

Didn't SVU air against the Survivor/TAR combo the last time it was an original? Since it seems to correlate so much with Criminal Minds, that would explain the difference.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that following the Goldbergs, we have the #2 strongest comedy on television, Modern Family. The pre-tune effect the show has on the previous comedy should also be accounted to give the Goldbergs another push.

ReplyDeleteYes, you are entirely correct, I forgot that. I believe pre-tune really is a thing and that lead-out should also be accounted for. I am not sure it is that much relevant in cases like 2 Broke Girls | Mike and Molly in which there is a drama with similar ratings following but certainly in the case of a 2 hour comedy block in which the biggest show is at 9pm, like is the case of The Middle | The Goldbers, so Iyes, I definitely agree.

ReplyDeleteAccording to my estimates (which I am admittedly still trying to perfect, but still) the average viewing levels at 8h are actually the lowest! Both the 10h and the 10h30 half hour are higher than the 8h half hour! Even if I am slightly off, which is very possible, it's still crazy, because we tend to think of 10pm as being lower viewed. It really makes you respect more the 8pm heavy lifters like The Middle, 2 Broke Girls and Last Man Standing.

SPN's writing team aspires to mediocrity. The characterization is all over the place, continuity is appalling, and the constant dangling of character progression before snatching it away and reverting to the same, dreary default has turned the dynamic between the brothers into one of tedious rinse-repeat. Their salaries must be handsome for J2M to keep signing up for this garbage.

ReplyDeleteI think it is harder to lead off a comedy hour than it is to anchor it, meaning I think the 8pm half hour is a tougher one to crack than the 9pm half hour. I don't think CBS was ever in a condition to put TBBT at 9 because its replacement would always lack at 8. As long as they have a good 8h30 show (Which tends to be their problem), the positive effects that TBBT has at 8 should still carry through the entire night in a more significant manner than they would at 9h. In addition, it is the game of the bird on one hand - maybe if they were to start the night from scratch they could consider doing it, like ABC did for Modern Family, but to change things up later on... I just don't feel it's worth the risk of the 8pm hour collapsing. This is my thinking anyway.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, only two comedies actually self-start (in my opinion): The Middle (for the obvious reasons) and Modern Family, because the show does essentially the same regardless of the lead-in it has (although I'd argue that the show is a bit stronger if it has a more compatible, higher-rated lead-in but the difference isn't that meaningful.)
ReplyDeleteYou can argue that while TG's performance this year has been impressive (which it has!), you also have to take into account just how good of a situation it has.
2 Broke Girls is a huge self starter too! And obviously The Big Bang Theory. To a lesser degree, but New Girl is also a self starter for FOX albeit on a different ratings level and The Last Man on Earth proved this past Sunday that it was one as well.

I thought it started off strong, with the Demon Dean stuff but they failed majorly with Cole. I also didn't care about the Angel sub plot so that failed for me early on. However, the last few episodes have been rather boring. Hopefully they can pick it up before the end of the season.

ReplyDeleteSPN is essentially an ensemble show now. It has to be, because J2 want fewer hours: they're family guys. Good for them. But this creative team needs to take a long hard look at how other ensemble genre shows, like The Flash, Arrow, Grimm, and The 100, craft their storylines. Because those writing teams are doing an infinitely better job at using all of their characters in logical, clever ways while not making fans feel they aren't seeing enough of the main protagonist/s.

ReplyDeleteme too, its fixed now. But looking at those viewer figures and factoring in Arrow's likelyhood to have overrun I think it will adjust down to 0.6. Looking for the half hours as I expect a big second half drop off for SPN in viewers and a drop in demo?

ReplyDeleteMaybe that helps a bit but I never found the ratings of the two correlated last year. I think it's a mix of The Flash getting more people interested, the show's very good positive buzz from last year and some considerable underachievement last winter and spring for some reason that is making the comparisons more favorable now.

ReplyDeleteI think they should do Law and Order SVU | Chicago PD | Chicago Med and hold Shades of Blue to the summer to the post Got Talent slot as it sounds very similar to Laura and Laura was apparently compatible with Got Talent judging from the preview results.

ReplyDeleteI find it really funny how The Middle fell like half a ratings point yet still beat Idol, which fell even more.
ReplyDeleteJLo comes with a big paycheck so I wonder if they can afford to put it in summer. They have already started production, so it is safe to say that they prepping it for the fall.
ReplyDeleteOne thing to bear in mind is that this is Blackish's best Modern Family retention in a very long time (since October) and that it has only had better retention than these three times (one of them being the premiere). So it is possible that Blackish really was affected but that what it gained from Empire's absence was lost by Modern Family's lower result.

I agree with you that they will do that but I don't think they should. JLo is not bringing any influx of viewers to American Idol as far as I can tell, why would she do it for Shades of Blue? We shall see.

In any case, even if they go down that route, I would rather them do SVU | PD | Shades of Blue (with Med launching in the winter) than forcing a newbie at 8pm against the Empire monster.
ReplyDeleteShades of Blue will be in the fall. However, I agree with Omabin that the smartest play for summer 2016 is Night Shift on Tuesday after AGT and Shades of Blue Wednesday after AGT (in Taxi Brooklyn's spot, but sooner after the second AGT episode).

ReplyDeleteYep, I agree, PD should be the one launching a show now. It makes little sense to subject a show to the low viewed 8pm slot against the Empire monster.

ReplyDeleteThe greater risk I think you run is oversaturation in the marketplace. Not only with existing properties but also potential newbies like Broad City. I feel the same about medical dramas, too.

ReplyDeleteYes I agree with that. They launched PD in the winter too so that is possible. Maybe it isn't such a bad idea since they could focus all of their energy in Med in the winter instead of spreading it in the fall.

ReplyDeleteUm why? It returned after a 3 week hiatus to a 1.5, the same ratings it had in the last episode. It also won the timeslot. What are you talking about? The show was already renewed anyways (with those ratings as well)
ReplyDeleteI agree. This entire season has been bad and boring. The DD plot was wasted. The MOC plot is boring and being dragged out. Cas is nowhere to be found. Crowley's story is awful and boring.

Agreed! Each Carver season is the worse than the other, IMO, and this one is the absolute worst!

ReplyDeleteI still don't understand. Jeremy Carver wrote some of Supernatural's most outstanding episodes but when he became show runner, he lost his head. He was on a leash as a writer but as show runner, he just lost all sense of what made SPN special. Those fan boy friends of his are no better. They did well on the leash but under Carver, they lost their minds too.

I agree that the addition of the Flash show is a significant factor. Awareness/interest in the show definitely increased after the winter crossover episodes. I don't agree that the show has underachieved. Given that the seasons are crafted as a 23-chapter story, it's best to look back on each season as a whole to judge if it was successful or not.

ReplyDeleteWe have been on 1.1 or 1.2 since FlArrow crossover. Last week was down only because of Empire finale. So I expect really good numbers from now on. Nothing less than 1.1 will do. I expect 1.2 and hope for 1.3 next episode.

I am silently praying that Cyber is doing worse than Stalker, I really liked Stalker and I wonder when they will air the remaining episodes.

ReplyDeleteI fear that’s been happening to me too a little bit. I’m behind on the episodes right now. I watched 10.13 Halt and Catch Fire last week so it’s not that bad but there was a long hiatus recently… On the other hand, my computer breaking contributed to it because it broke my habit of watching a new episode soon after it’s aired. And it’s hard to pick the habit back up when the show isn’t as compelling as it used to be. I remember how hard it was to wait a whole week for another episode. Now it’s like, “Argh, another one was aired and I still haven’t watched the previous ones!”
This season is so bad that I'm seriously thinking I won't be back next year, and I may just record the rest of this season and "marathon" it later.

I was really interested in L&O: SVU last night. Honestly, I was much more interested in that show than in SPN. Whenever I turned to SPN, it was either Rowena going on and on about whatever or a horrible FB w/that nun. Hahaha! I just wasn't interested.
ReplyDeleteAs you said, the show doesn't have the same hold over me it once did. I've been watching out of habit, but I feel if this is the best they have to offer, I will probably check out. I don't feel one single meaningful thing has occurred all season. I feel like the show has been spinning its wheels all season long. It's ridiculous. I also read that this MOC crap story will probably be carried over into next year. IMO, SPN would benefit from an actual story arc and plan for the year. I don't think that is likely to happen w/Carver at the helm!
