Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Tuesday overnight victory for CBS, which bested competing second-place NBC by a hefty 80 percent. But the home of “The Voice” will remain competitive in the key demographics.
Tops for the night, as always, was “NCIS” on CBS at a 9.9 rating/16 share from 8-9 p.m., and that led into freshman hit “NCIS: New Orleans” (#1: 8.7/14) and on-the-fence “Person of Interest” (#1: 5.7/10) from 9-11 p.m. With a loss of 15 percent year-to-year (which featured “NCIS: Los Angeles” at 9 p.m.), CBS may want to think about a new drama at 10 p.m.
In week two news, the sophomore season of NBC sitcom “Undateable” slid by 19 percent from its week-ago season opener with a 3.5/ 6 in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, this was 27 percent below former time period occupant “About a Boy” on the year-ago evening (4.8/ 7 on 3/25/14). Overnight retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “The Voice’ (8.0/13) was only 44 percent. And a 4.3/ 7 in the overnights last week translated into a 1.9 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live + Same Day data). In other words, this could certainly be much better.
With weaker lead-in support, week two of new NBC comedy “One Big Happy” was not so happy at a 2.6/ 4 (#2t) at 9:30 p.m. Comparably, this was 32 percent below the 3.8/ 6 opener last week (which translated into a 1.6/ 5 in adults 18-49). This was 33 percent below short-lived “Growing Up Fisher” one year earlier (3.9/ 6 on 3/25/14). And “One Big Happy” slid by 26 percent from lead-in “Undateable.” In other words, you may not want to get too used to “One Big Happy.”
At 10 p.m. on NBC was a Tuesday airing of “The Night Shift” at a last-place 2.7/ 5 in the overnights, which was a hefty 44 percent below regularly scheduled “Chicago Fire” one week earlier (4.8/ 8 on March 17).
Earlier in the evening on NBC was rock-solid “The Voice” at a 7.7/12 (#2) from 8-9 p.m., which was just six percent below the 8.2/13 one week earlier.
In the night’s other week two news, CW drama “iZombie” scored a 1.3/ 2 (#5) in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was 19 percent below the 1.6/ 2 debut one week earlier. But part of the erosion stemmed from lead-in “The Flash” sliding from a 2.7/ 4 to a 2.4/ 4 week to week.
Over at ABC, recent sitcom entry “Fresh Off the Boat” finished third in the 8 p.m. half-hour with a 3.3/ 5, but non-scripted lead-out “Repeat After Me” dipped to a 2.1/ 4 at 8:30 p.m. (#4), which was a 36 percent drop. Not good. Next was “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” at a 2.7/ 4 from 9-10 p.m., which was seven percent below the 2.9/ 5 one week earlier (which resulted in a 1.6/ 5 in adults 18-49). And a 3.1/ 5 for older-skewing “Forever” at 10 p.m. may not even be enough to crack a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49. In other words, ABC needs to revamp Tuesday next season.
In season (or series) finale news, “The Mindy Project” on Fox concluded season three at an uneventful 1.6/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. Despite the anemic ratings all season (and that includes all qualifiers), chances of a fourth season for Mindy Kaling are likely because of the need for more episodes for off-network.
Earlier in the evening on Fox was tired “Hell’s Kitchen” at a 2.7/ 4 from 8-9 p.m. (#4), followed by an encore telecast of “New Girl” at a 1.2/ 2 at 9 p.m.

About the Daily Ratings
Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteThe Night Shift just proved why Chicago Fire can't leave Tuesdays at 10 PM. A 2.7/5 is around what a normal show would do out of low rated comedy lead ins. I'm also not surprised that The Night Shift had a drop on Tuesdays. It is living off the Voice.

I didn't even realize Chicago Fire didn't air last night. I DVR it. Why did they put TNS there?
ReplyDeleteI read a few bad reviews for last night's The Flash but that doesn't explain the drop in ratings considering how amazing last weeks episode was. It should have built, or stayed steady.
I still haven't watched iZombie but I have not read one bad thing about it. I like to see The CW having great nights so this analysis sucks for me.
It might be moved but it will be renewed. Still waiting for CBS to renew their dramas.

ReplyDeleteHowever, closer to reality is that The Night Shift's retention out of the Voice isn't great and they wanted to burn off two episodes in one week to complete the order and move on to the next show after The Voice.

ReplyDeleteAiring the Night Shiff last night was overall a win-win. It still did better than a Chicago Fire repeat (which would have inevitably been scheduled last night instead).
ReplyDeleteIf The Night Shift really grew from One Big Happy and had minimal slippage from its post voice numbers it's not a horrible result and the show might find itself renewed for summer again, since Sony produces it and Sony seems determined not to have cancellations of shows with syndication potential.

I suppose they want to announce them all at the same time but they might be holding off on some older shows because the cast hasn't signed new deals yet. For example, I haven't heard yet that Mark Harmon has signed a new contract for NCIS, and no way CBS would renew it without him.

In the past few years, they have always announced renewals before Easter holidays.

In past years they've left those contracts-constrained negotiations to later on. Criminal Minds was renewed later last year (or was it two years ago?), and Two and a Half Men was also renewed later two years ago. I don't think it would be a big deal.
ReplyDeleteIt's a matter of perspective. I always calculate the relative ratings which is a much better measure to see whether or not the shows actually fell. Shield, for instance, has been doing much better this spring than in the fall since it has essentially the same numbers but most of the ABC drama slate has fallen tremendously, so its relative ratings have increased.
ReplyDeleteWell, they promised an A-Reveal in the season 2 finale, which happened, they said that they would reveal who ''Red Coat'' was in the season 3 finale, which kinda happened, and in the season 4 finale we were supposed to get answers to the night Ali disappeared, but we only got some pieces, and now they promised the big A-reveal, which they did reveal, but now we know who A is, kinda. Well, they promised big things, but they do reveal small things and we get a few answers.

I agree that Sony produces it and they are known to do anything to get shows renewed, but honestly, if it's around a 1.0, that's too low even for NBC's summer. I'd pass and let Sony shop it around elsewhere. With Heart Matters and Chicago Med, there's really no need for another show that NBC doesn't own to help out Sony.

ReplyDeleteIt was two years ago. And it's possible, but the last two times Harmon was up for a new NCIS contract the show was actually renewed before all the other ones (season 9 and season 11 renewal happened on the first days of February). Also this year it seems there are multipe dramas with contract negotiations, Criminal Minds and NCIS, but also possibly NCIS: LA and The Good Wife since they are at the end of season 6.

I've never watched it, it just seems every season I read "the big A reveal" and the next day, disappointment from fans.
ReplyDeleteThey wouldn't be helping out Sony out of the kindness of their hearts, obviously. Presumably, if this were to happen, Sony would do some cost reductions and would sell the show at a ridiculously low licensee fee to NBC, thus allowing NBC to make enough of a profit with whatever add revenues they can squeeze in from a 1.0 performer, while Sony itself would be at a loss during the next few years and then get their gains back in syndication. If the show had 44 episodes under its belt instead of the ~22 it will have I would feel pretty confident about this happening. As it is, I think it could go either way.

ReplyDeleteExactly and that's why it's shelf life is limited. CBS can do better and the suggestions that it move to Friday at 9/8 are ridiculous - it would bomb there and hurt BB. Since CBS doesn't seem to care about Sundays with ill-advised early renewal of MS, sinking TGW, those could just move it there and settle for fourth place finishes. POI would be better served as a 10-13 episode cable series.

ReplyDeleteI didn't know The Good Wife was up for contracts. I think it's strange that we have not heard anything about it. I know they are the end of Season 6, but I think that is a rule of thumb thing and not an exact figure. Castle contracts for instance are up now at the end of Season 7 only. Private Practice contracts were up at the halfway point of Season 6. There are probably more examples, but I think the Season 6 thing tends to vary and there are usually news about those, I think. We shall see. I have a hard time imagining the good wife surviving contract negotiations at this point with ratings being so low and it having only one more season left in it (presumably, and according to interviews from creators and all), yet I and most media outlets seem to believe it will be renewed more or less easily, so I doubt contracts can be at stake. I could be way off though...

ReplyDeleteI am not sure either but since TGW and LA are at the end of season 6 there could be negotiations. But I could be wrong and it might be after season 7 or so. I do believe Archie Panjabi is leaving TGW because her contrat is up after this season and she chose not to renew it. And then there was Josh Charles but it seems he had a very different contract schedule.

ReplyDeleteI really hope iZ can stay at 0.7. But looking at the episode voting poll - 12% voted "awful". That's a lot for 2nd episode of the series.
Charles' contract was up by the end of the fourth season (I remember this because he was the only cast member who hadn't renewed the contract). But that delay was because he was thinking of leaving the show at that point already.

Harmon already has a contract. The last one was a multiple year contract, including being a producer, not co-producer anymore. NCIS is already renewed, They are gonna announce it soon...
ReplyDeleteMaybe you are right, the Archie Panjabi thing is a good example. I dunno. The only people they would need to secure would be Christine Baransky and Matt Czuchry though. Julianna is an executive producer of the show so I think she is not at stake. And Alan Cumming and Matthew Goode were added later to the cast, so they shouldn't be on the same rotation.
ReplyDeleteNot saying the show will held up well or not, but the results of the polls here have a terrible correlation with the actual ratings. The 100 was probably the most popular show here this winter and it was low rated.

ReplyDeleteThe last time Harmon signed a new deal was for seasons 11 and 12 I believe. It was a two-year contract in 2013 (http://deadline.com/2013/02/mark-harmon-signs-new-ncis-deal-paving-the-way-for-renewal-of-hit-cbs-drama-419069/). I agree though, the show is certain to be renewed and Harmon is certain to return.

On 08/04 (We.), NBC is airing The Voice Playoff resutls at 8pm, before SVU. The network is making one incomprehensible decision after the other. Why are they airing it there to prop up SVU instead of on Thursdays to give some much needed help to The Blacklist is absolutely beyond me.

ReplyDeleteSadly I think It will be cancelled, I absolutely love the show, If ABC were serious about keeping it they should of swapped it with Castle to see if it could get an audience on Monday, Castle would probably be getting the same ratings on Tuesday that it gets Mondays thesedays anyway. If Castle ends maybe they might see some value in keeping it around and trying it on Monday but as its not ABC owned they would almost certainly try a new drama instead.
ReplyDeleteThe positive is that it has been steady for a Tuesday ABC 10pm show, Maybe if being generous ABC might be happy with that and will keep it in that slot next season rather then trying and likely failing to find something to put there once again but that is the ultimate Forever fanboy suggestion that is highly unlikely to happen.

ReplyDeleteThey'll probably announce Stalker and Battle Creek are cancelled. I know Madam Secretary has been renew though it's doing pretty low lately, I wonder if they can change their minds about it...
I think I mentioned before how Tuesday nights are becoming anemic. All of the networks will have to make some crucial changes for this night in the Fall. The Mindy Project can no longer stay on Tuesday. ABC has to revamp. NBC comedies still stink. And CBS is aging, with Person of Interest most likely on the move.
ReplyDeleteWhen The Neighbors was renewed in Season 1, it was performing at 80% of ABC's comedy average. That is already a rather low threshold for a freshman show and in most cases would lead to a cancellation. But ABC had a horrible comedy season that year and The Neighbors was ABC produced so they made the reach renewal even though they downgraded to a Friday slot.
ReplyDeleteForever, on the other hand, is performing at a much worse 60% of ABC's drama average, which are certain grounds for the cancellation of any freshman show. The fact that it is not ABC produced only works against it and ABC has no need to make a reach renewal with How to Get Away with Murder being a breakout drama hit and Agent Carter and Secrets and Lies being workable options if they want another drama renewal.
I have never heard of a show that was renewed and then later un-renewed. Canceled and un-canceled, yes, but never renewed and un-renewed.

ReplyDeleteFOTB still will be renewed. Pairing it with new single-cam comedy and add new soap at 9 (Shondaland's Smoke and Mirrors or Quantico) and Tuesday will be good. Shield at 10pm will be okay with good lead-in.

ReplyDeleteSeason to date, Tuesdays are indeed the day of the week with the worse year to year trend which is a bit shocking to me considering how lousy Sundays have been doing (Tuesdays are down 12% year to year and Sundays 10%).

ReplyDeleteBesides The Flash, there was nothing really buzz worthy on Tuesday this season. I was so happy that Fresh Off The Boat came to the night. The two NCIS are highly rated when it comes to viewers but these are not shows that are appealing to the young demographic. Tuesday night needs a spark and which ever network responds accordingly could be the first to really dominate the night.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain why Repeat after me is still airing? Anything would do better, a repeat of some of the Wednesday comedies, a short results show to DWTS . It doesn't matter if it's cheap if it's a black hole on Tuesday.

ReplyDeletePart of these numbers come with some caveats though. ABC brings the average down because they are being compared with the ridiculously high rated early opening weeks of Marvel's Agents of Shield which were obviously never going to be replicated. On the other hand, NBC replaced a solidly rated hour of The Biggest Loser in the fall by a pair of flop comedies and let them air throughout the hiatus without any support so the numbers got horrific soon. FOX is actually not too depreciated (only -7% and that is mostly because of the early Utopia weeks), since Masterchef Jr. was such an improvement on Dads and B99. CBS numbers are the ones that seem the most related with actual aging issues (and NO being weaker than LA).

ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I think NBC keeps supporting Dick Wolf's 16 year old SVU in the expense of Blacklist. Why would they move that show to a new night surrounded by new unappealing dramas is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteNo, this was always the plan. Probably partially because there weren't enough episodes of the comedies and partially because they wanted to prop up Med.

ReplyDeleteSeason to date, Repeat After Me is averaging a 1.25. While the Wednesday sitcoms repeat better when they air on Wednesday, historically they've repeated poorly in out of slot airings. For example, when ABC brought Modern Family to Tuesdays in the fall to replace Manhattan Love Story, it went sub 1.0 (had a 0.9), so it is not nearly obvious they would be doing better as you claim.

ReplyDeleteI think instead of showing Repeat After Me, ABC should just run back to back episodes of Fresh Off The Boat. Have it finish its season before ratings get really ugly because of Spring and daylight savings. And then next year have The Middle as a lead in for the show to provide support.

ReplyDeleteThat's 80% hold and it was the lowest end hold they've had so far I believe. To go 5 pp even lower than that and do 1.2 with a 75% hold would be very strange. Like I said, not impossible for sure but there is no track record to suggest so. We'll know in half an hour, I hope you are wrong!

It was not a scheduling move and it is not a disaster. They had one extra episode of The Night Shift to air somewhere and they would have to air a Fire repeat here (or another night) which would rate even lower than The Night Shift did almost for sure. So they improved on those repeat ratings and aired the extra episode. What is the disaster in that?

ReplyDeleteI'd view the disadvantages as they lowered the season average for the show for no reason (they could have aired that one episode later with more planning), they likely have given The Night Shift its season low so momentum wasn't gained, they now have the PR that they are third at 10 PM, and they put a show at 10 PM that probably didn't help the pre-tune ratings that would have benefited One Big Happy in its second week.

ReplyDeleteI agree. And I'd also add that growing in the HH from One Big Happy is a positive. With its results, certainly there is enough to work with for a summer renewal. People tend to forget this was a last minute fill in that was sparsely promoted. Most people still had Chicago Fire on their guides.

ReplyDeleteExactly. Chicago PD has repeated at 0.9, so it probably would have been close to a 0.8. So both aren't that far off.
ReplyDeleteBut it's not so much about Chicago Fire, but using an original to land them in third. That change was meaningless.
