Hanna gets arrested, accused of being an accomplice to Alison in Mona's murder. Veronica tells Ashley they found Hanna's blood on Mona's shirt from the day she died. Spencer and Toby have been keeping their distance. Lesli, a friend of Mona's, pays the girls a visit. Andrew talks to Aria about Mona. Alison's lawyer suggests she should plead guilty.

THE VERDICT
"We, the jury, find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree."
This was an awesome, awesome episode. We suffered through a couple of fillers in 5B but it's all paying off, ever since Hanna got arrested. It's been a chain reaction since and I'm loving this jail storyline. It has raised the stakes for the finale so intensely that we just don't know how the girls are going to get out of this one. All I can say is, bring me that finale!!
Episode Awards
Prettiest Little Liar: This is actually impossible to choose for this episode. Impossible. I literally cannot choose because they were all pretty equal in this episode (though poor Hanna has been pushed to the back since her arrest), so I'm just going to cheat and say all of them were the prettiest little liar this week. If they want, they can fight it out for the crown.
Most Macho Male: Caleb. He wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to Hanna then helps Mike. He also says what's on everybody's mind about the police in Rosewood.
Biggest Asshole: Tanner. It's getting quite clear she just straight-up hates the girls and their boyfriends.
Favourite Episode Pairing: Spencer and Emily. "You can be aggressive sometimes."
Runner-up: Alison and Hanna.
Best Line: "I can't. There are barracudas with duller teeth." - Emily Fields.
Best Moment: The entire verdict scene, from the "we find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree" to Spencer, Aria and Emily being arrested.
Saddest Moment: I definitely had to choose the verdict again for this because it's just mortifying to be found guilty for a murder you didn't commit.
Runner-up: Caleb's speech to Hanna.
Creepiest Moment: Mike is chased through the woods before he is pepper-sprayed. We see what it's like to look through is eyes where we can't really see much, just shapes and even a figure moving around.
Biggest Question Mark Award: Who was Alison's bunkmate in the camp?
Biggest ReveAl: Ella is actually around? Kidding, it's obviously the reveal of the jury's guilty verdict.
Best Cat Fight: Caleb vs. Ezra. They both had a great scene arguing about bringing Mike into everything and both bring up valid points.
A's Mysteries
MAYBE SOMETHING FROM HAMLET?
Ella makes a comment to Aria after mentioning the hard time she's had for four years. For Aria's yearbook picture, Ella suggests she use something from Hamlet. Shakespeare's Hamlet (which has been brought up quite a few times this season) involves the betrayal of an uncle who becomes Hamlet's father-in-law. Maybe this is a clue?
MORE NOTE DECIPHERING
In last week's episode review, I wrote that the note found in Mona's mirror could be an anagram for Charles DiLaurentis, something that a few people figured out. It was also pointed out to me in the comments that it could also be Nerd Lucas Is a Liar. That makes so much sense too. But what if the three sentences aren't anagrams at all. Alison tried to work it out and gave her notes to Hanna, but her lawyer took it away from her. I found it interesting that Alison didn't look at it in the way of anagrams, but instead she looked at the meaning. She wrote that 'Chandelier's rituals' could be symbolic to rising from the dead. It's been alluded to that someone is rising from the dead. Mona? Maya?
WHO'S THE ARCHER?
It's definitely not Oliver Queen because whoever this archer is, they're not a very good shot. Earlier in the episode, Aria told Andrew where Ezra was taking Mike. The fact that he knew and he was so invested in Mike earlier does make it look very suspicious. He was also an award-winning scout. "Never know when those skills are going to come in handy." However, looking at it in an opposite way of assuming he's on the A team, maybe he knows Mike is important to the overall story and is genuinely worried for him. I read a comment on the site that maybe Andrew could be an undercover cop. I don't think he'd be a cop (I mean it was pretty unbelievable for Toby to be a cop at his age never mind Andrew but this is Pretty Little Liars) but maybe he is helping in a way. Like a guardian angel?
"Bullseye, bitches - A"
Archery is also brought up at Alison's trial, right? Alison was apparently really good at it, despite her injury as a child. She even got an award for it at the camp. And who else was in the camp with Alison? It's been hinted that it could be Maya, Sarah Harvey, or someone we have yet to meet.
TED IS A?!
Okay, this has just come to my attention by Christopher DeBono who just told me in the comments that Mona's note could also be an anagram for "Run Ali, Ted is Charles". A little further up in regards to Hamlet, it's about a father-in-law betraying the main character. Well, Ted is going to be Hanna's father-in-law, isn't he? Makes total sense! There's no real motive there that we know of but we can't strike out Pastor Ted just yet.

It's the penultimate episode so things were bound to heat up in Rosewood. Did you guys enjoy last night's Pretty Little Liars as much as I did?
ReplyDeleteIt was really great, slow and not that exciting but it really made some plot developments. It was clear Alison was gonna stay in jail, they had NO defense AT ALL, and it did surprise me that all the girls are going to jail, loved that eentire scene, sad and very touhing but in a way, really awesome. They´re really making Andrew be very suspicious, but I don´t think he´s A, don´t think so, but there´s something weird going on there. And what did that note from Alison about those lines Mona wrote say? Couldn´t Alison just tell Hanna what she wrote?
ReplyDeleteOMG next week seems super awesome, I hope it lives up to the expctations and they reveal A or Big A, bc they wouldn´t call the biggest episode ever if they weren´t gonna reveal it. S4 finale dissapointed me a little, it had anwers but it was not exciting and it was slow, hope the S5 finale is better, it looks like it.

The one at the camp could be either Melissa, Spencer or Kate. It was previously mentioned (around season 2) that Melissa was a counselor at a camp Spencer and Kate attended. Alison could have also attended and was just never mentioned. It's been hinted that Melissa and Alison have/had a bigger friendship then we've been led to believe (they spent that summer together where Alison had her pregnancy scare).
The Andrew as an uncover cop theory again comes from reddit. He has no issue with following people around and previously seemed really interested that Mike was getting into drugs. He's also staked out Aria's house, the bar and Mona's for a while. He's also made some odd comments to Aria about Mona, possibly prodding her for a reaction. I think Tanner has him doing the long con to dig up information on the liars.
Totally agree, they really didn't have a very good defense at all and the grapefruit thing was a huge stretch, but the evidence against Alison wasn't very concrete either. Realistically, it should have been a mistrial, but yeah they weren't getting Alison out of jail before the finale.
ReplyDeleteThe note Alison wanted to give to Hanna was more like ramblings on each of the sentences in Mona's mirror so it would be a bit complex and long to explain, and I've tried to think of something in the A's Mysteries section of the review as Alison thinks the first sentence means 'rise from the dead'. She doesn't look at them as anagrams but what they symbolically mean.
I am with you on the reveal but I don't think we will get to know who A actually is, like I don't think they'll make it painfully obvious, but I'm sure Marlene King said we will see the back of A without a hood or wig on, so we will know what they look like from the back, like if it's a girl or boy, and maybe we'll figure it out based on hairstyle too. Agree on the S4 finale too, I was let down but S5's promises to be better and I'm sure it will be :D
Ugh forget the back or the hair and all that, I wanna see his/her fu*king face haha And I want it to be someone we care about a little bit. Like Jason, Melissa or Wren
ReplyDeleteOMG, the Ted anagram could totally be right! If you noticed in my A's Mysteries section, Ella suggested Hamlet to Aria, and Hamlet has been shoved down our throats for a while. Hamlet is about a father-in-law who betrays Hamlet. Well, who's going to be Hanna's father-in-law? TED! That's just went straight to the top of my list now, I'm going to add it to the review.
ReplyDeleteI think if Melissa was a counselor at the camp, she wouldn't share bunks with the campers, but you're right about the hints between the two being more friendly than they let on. The long con thing about Andrew could totally be right actually. I don't see him as a cop but he could be doing Tanner's dirty work. I hope we find out in the finale!
I agree for the 3 you mentioned. I'm starting to think it's one of the adults, like Ted. I'm going to add something to my A's Mysteries section that Christopher DeBono just pointed out in his comment that I responded to. It makes total sense!

I don't think Ted is Big A because apparently that person was in the Pilot and Season 3 and he wasn't, but it's a good theory because of the anagram and the constant Hamlet references. Not sure of a motive yet but with what A has been doing to the girls for years, they apparently have no motive either because the girls haven't done anything to deserve that torture. That's why I need to know the reason A is after the girls more than who the hell A is haha.

ReplyDeleteMarlene is such a tease. She needs to be more definitive about her cryptic messages haha (I know that's impossible but it's torturing the viewers more than A is torturing the girls). I guess the Pilot thing could have been about Mona, I'll have to find when she said that and connect the dots.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I don't think it could be about Mona because the Pilot and Season 3 thing was after Mona was revealed as A in the S2 finale anyway, but it might have been about someone else. But, like everything in PLL, it's just too difficult to know for sure.

ReplyDeleteThat is very true, it might just be about someone on the A Team then. I really am going to have to dig up the quote and when it was said and in what context. It's a huge spoiler and that's why I thought of maybe Meredith because she was in the Pilot and Season 3.

ReplyDeleteI believe that actually comes from Keegan who mentioned that theirs hints to big A's identity going right back to the pilot. Not that A was necessarily in the pilot.

ReplyDeleteAnother theory I saw about Andrew actually puts him a step up into the FBI. With the suggestion that he's been sent by the FBI to monitor the events of Rosewood. After the whole dollhouse fiasco happens, he'll call in the FBI because the Rosewood P.D are utterly hopeless.
Haha they really are utterly hopeless. This whole thing happening in Rosewood definitely needs some bigger involvement from authorities. There's an unknown psycho on the loose targeting young girls and their loved ones, or anyone associated with them in any way. I'm starting to worry though that even if they catch Big A and all the little minions, what's to stop someone else from just picking up their phone and starting the whole thing up again, especially since it appears the police are no match whatsoever.

Oh my God, you literally know everything there is to know behind the scenes about PLL! I admire your dedication. I could see a spin-off happen considering PLL has been ABC Family's biggest hit since the Secret Life of the American Teenager and they'll want to continue that, so I could see thast happening.

ReplyDeleteI feel like rather then a proper spinoff (since Ravenswood didn't work) they're looking at 'The Perfectionists' as a semi-spinoff. Same original book author and same basic concept. It also looks like the production team of PLL will move over to that show if it gets picked up.
That would be cool, and yeah Ravenswood just didn't work because it was a pretty bad show. I watched it and didn't like it. It was far too bizarre to be in context with PLL. 'The Perfectionists' could be good though. Another Sara Shepard book series, 'The Lying Game', didn't last very long though so the success of that show if it does get picked up could go either way. I quite liked The Lying Game as well.

My wish would be for a parent to be A, but there isn't one available that would be believable enough.
The Lucas theories are solid but just as others.
Jonny is suspicious also, he could've been the archer or acomplice.
While I really hope they don't pull of an Alison twin out of their hat
Hope you get to watch the episode soon, it really was a good one. I know what you mean though about turning anyone into A, it's going to be hard to make a lot of people believable even when they drop hints. I might just be reading into the whole Ted thing too much :P Jonny is a good theory for the archer but I don't know what he's doing after his arrest by Toby. Will he be locked up for a little while for vandalism, or community service? They need to explain that one.

ReplyDeleteIf Ted wasn't a priester he would be such a good choice, but I don't think they won't ever go there. But maybe he is keeping quite for someone and will be used later on.
I think Jonny just got kicked out from the Hastings barn, but wasn't prosecuted yet after Veronica bailed him out.
Andrew in the mix is a bit to convenient, while I still think they will turn this into a girl on girl obssesion. Maybe throw Paige into the combination. ^_^
I really enjoyed this episode. and for the first time in forever (yes frozen) I really liked Allison and I felt sorry for her. My stomach just turned when she started crying :( I really hope that this #BigAReveal won't be an Ezra reveal where he is actually not A. and I hope it got nothing to do with Andrew hahah oh man, I have so high hopes for this reveal that I hope they won't let me down :D I am excited tho :)

I always think everybody has a secret in Rosewood, even the pastors. Could be right about the girl on girl obsession too, is it really bad that I kinda forgot Paige since she's been gone? Frozen reference FTW! (I love Frozen so any reference I love). It's very easy to feel sorry for Alison in this episode, and bless you, PLL does that sometimes, enough to make you cry. I've shed quite a few tears over the past 5 years watching this show. I hope the reveal isn't that Andrew is A as I'm starting to doubt he is, but I do want to know what is going on with him because he's been so weird lately. Yay, we can be excited together! Just 6 more days!! And thanks for reading and commenting :)

Oh I don't mean an imposter haha a 'pastor' as in a minister of a church, but he could be hiding something. The anagram of 'Run Ali, Ted is Charles' could just be a red herring though and actually not mean anything. Just add it to the list of red herrings haha. It's such a shame Paige is slipping our minds now, Emily needs someone. Right now she's quite lonely in the relationship department since Talia is AWOL.

Oh my God yes!! I think I mentioned a few reviews back about how all Emily was getting was a storyline with Talia and she needed to be incorporated into the mysteries and dramas more. She's been pretty much sidelined this season and she needs some meat to sink her teeth into. Poor Ems.

ReplyDeleteThey completely went out of ideas and it's a bit sad to watch at moments but I'm infected and have to watch it till the end. But never again with the same passion as pre4th season.
Totally agree. Emily also helped Hanna by teaching her to dance and get roped into the pageant that didn't go anywhere. Before that it was Paige. We can tell when they're running on fumes for stories and it can be hard to watch at times. I'll always see Seasons 1 and 2 as PLL's best, with season 3 still very good and even half of season 4. I will go into Season 6 hoping for the best though because I'm sure this show can return to its former glory if it really tried :)

ReplyDeleteAgreed, S1 and S2 of PLL´s are the best of the series, S3 was not bad but they started giving us headaches from that season forward. S4 was bad IMO and S5 is not that great either.

ReplyDeleteI used to watch Vampire Diaries. I watched seasons 1-5 and I haven't watched Season 6 yet. I'm going to wait for the Blu-ray so I can catch up during the summer. I had to cut a few shows to fit time in for Uni and I didn't really enjoy Season 5 of VD very much.

ReplyDeleteWow I didn't really expect them to arrest Aria, Emily & Spencer, especially all at the same time. Even as that montage started with Hanna waiting in her cell and then going to the court for the verdict, I never saw that coming - I mean I suppose it was kind of always lurking there, but I never imagined that would happen so fast right there. Really cool montage scene though and I really liked the song they used (never heard of it before, but I guess it's "Everything Is Lost" by Maggie Eckford, thank God for Tunefind).
