    Secrets and Lies was much easier to get into and paced well. Out of the two, it was a lot more on brand for ABC.

    I'll forgive a pilot partly because we are being introduced to new characters, not lost hope yet because the upcoming previews look good. The problem for me is the direction and editing which can take away from the viewing experience.

    I guess this show is just too much for the ADHD crowd that watches Flash, Arrow and AOS every week. It is too intelligent for some people, great show.

    What is wrong with trying something different and airing a 11 episode "cable" like series that might have a shot at Emmy nominations? ABC still has 17 hours a week to program shows that can pull higher ratings...movie studios release prestige movies at the end of the year and go for the Oscar why shouldnt ABC or the other networks at least air one show a year that has serious Emmy aspirations?

    I think you're being a little unfair here. American Crime is provocative, intense realism that plays more like a Scared Straight documentary than an fictional drama. The racial struggles and racism portrayed here feel palpable and not at all like some soapy melodrama. This ain't light mindless entertainment that broad mass network television audiences are accustomed to seeing on their television.. I liked it a lot but this is obviously not going to appeal to very many Scandal and Empire fans looking for fast paced story telling and bigger than life characters acting outrageously. No hip hop soundtrack here to sell on iTunes, either. To each his own. I really like Agents of SHIELD, by the way, and now American Crime, so what does that say about me? :).

    I doubt ABC is expecting Scandal type ratings and certainly nothing remotely close to FOX's Empire. American Crime is a high profile prestige drama and it's only one hour of their weekly programming schedule for eleven weeks. There is nothing else like it on network television so there might be a strong enough niche audience for something of this caliber. The 10pm hour is better suited to experiment with this type of adult drama anyway. I thought American Crime was great. I didn't find it boring at all and didn't have a problem with the slower pacing but to each his own..

    It definitely has that feel of something you'd see on those networks, no question. But I do admire ABC for trying something a little different anyway-even if these sorts of shows don't become a regular thing on network TV, it's still neat to see stuff like this every now and again.
    I liked tonight's episode-everything with the Gutierrez family has me really intrigued, and I'm already hooked on all the stuff with Barb and Russ and the secrets their son apparently was hiding and so on. Course, I like Felicity Huffman, so that helps-she's doing a great job of making Barb both irritating and sympathetic all at the same time. And I'm curious how this case will play out, too. So I'm up for what's next.
    But I also understand why this sort of drama might not click with others, too. Sometimes slower-paced stories just aren't some people's thing. It happens. *Shrugs*

    Or maybe it's not their cup of tea, which is completely understandable. It surely isn't mine, not because I don't get it, but because it simply doesn't appeal to me. I don't deny the great level of acting or the tight script it has, it has many great qualities, but I simply don't see a reason for coming back as I didn't engage with most of its characters, but merely one or two

    Honestly, I liked the pilot to an extent. My major problem is that I truly didn't engage with the characters, which is a shame considering how well acted this show is. At the end of the hour I didn't feel like coming back. However, I think the show is so well made as a whole that I may give it a second chance, but I don't feel really engaged as of right now

    There is a reason why these shows are typically on cable...not enough people has the intelligence to enjoy them so they prefer unreal characters like Cookie Lyons, Olivia Pope and Red Reddington with unrealistic behaviors. AC is about REAL people with REAL problems.

    I wouldn't go as far as questioning the intelligence of what people watch, it's insulting. Some people just don't follow these real people problems because TV is an escape for them, they already have those shares of problems in real life; it'd surprised you how many people think that way.


    I could engage with AC should we have spent a little bit more time with its characters, but as a whole it felt really scattered, they presented way too many at once and I didn't feel a connection with many of them

    It was a beautifully nuanced hour of dramatic TV. Filled with sublime performances all around--and incredible directing. Visually impeccable.


    This is something i can see getting progressively faster and faster in pace each week.

    No Fred, it's your choice of wording "too intelligent" that I have a problem with. It sounds just a little obnoxious to indirectly imply that only less intelligent viewers wouldn't like American Crime which is how some might interpret your comment. Why anyone watches and enjoys any program is unique to them. Comparing comic book Superhero shows to a realistic adult drama and their respective audiences is silly. Honestly could you have picked two more disparate types of shows than The Flash, Arrow and SHIELD vs American Crime? There is nothing wrong or inferior with pure mindless escapism (The Flash), just as there is nothing wrong with a grim, realistic adult drama (American Crime). The key demographic audience will always be much bigger for escapist fare. I think you could have made your point better without sounding insulting is really all I am trying to say. Maybe substituting "too serious and dark" for "too intelligent" would have been a better choice.

    I want to love this show -- and I certainly know the caliber of these actors is worth watching -- but I agree with some of the commenters who disliked how you didn't get to know the characters / story. I was so distracted by the jump cuts, and bizarre editing that I couldn't quiet grasp all of the dialogue and had to re-watch to see what was really being said / implied. I wanted to know more about Russ / Matt / Barb and then it cut to some young kids making out. I certainly see the intelligence behind this show, but almost wish it told more of a story than just fragments at a time. I hope in upcoming episodes we really get a feel for the bigger picture, a deeper look at the characters/ relationships, and not just portraits of grieving fathers / innocent kids / druggies. That being said, definitely tuning in next week -- What sold me was Tim and Felicity.

    Agreed. This does deal with some pretty serious topics that have been in the news lately, and even if a show handles those topics well, I can see where some people would just prefer to watch lighter stories, too, over the serious drama stuff, and just turn to the news instead if they want that kind of realistic drama.
    I've never been a fan of the condescending, "Oh, it's just too smart for your brain to handle" attitude some people have. TV can be a brilliant art form, no question, I don't want to dismiss the power it can have with the stories it tells. But at the end of the day, it's still TV. It's still ultimately entertainment of some kind first and foremost. It's not something people need to use to lord their intelligence over others with.

    It's definitely on the wrong network though I do applaud ABC for giving it a chance.

    Overall it felt a bit convoluted, and I thought it was trying a bit too hard.
    But the acting was spectacular.
    Maybe it will find it's rhythm in the next couple of episodes. I'll keep it on my radar though I don't think I'll make it a point to catch up on it.

    The pilot felt campred and disjointed. I liked what I was seeing but they need to do a better job at juggling all the different aspects they have introduced.
