Madam Secretary - Tamerlane - Advance Preview: "Will the coup succeed?"

Following the cliffhanger of episode 15, Madam Secretary concludes its three-part episode on Sunday. The previous episode ended with the revelation that CIA Director Andrew Munsey is involved in a coup, or regime change, in Iran, along with the previous Secretary of State Vincent Marsh, Elizabeth's friend Juliet and turned CIA asset Samila Mahdavi.

Again, we pick up right where we left off. Munsey is placed under house arrest and watched closely 24/7. The fact that he is out, however, doesn't mean he's down. In fact, Munsey later plays a key role in the episode. Elsewhere, Elizabeth finally brings her staff up to speed on the Marsh investigation. Since a coup needs a leader, they work to identify potential coup leaders. Their attempts are successful and Russell and Elizabeth visit the leader. However, Bess notices something is off and that leads to a discovery that might endanger the coup.

In the end, Elizabeth decides that the only way to stop the coup is to head to Iran. In all secrecy, she manages to make it there and meets with the best ally she has: Zahed Javani. We meet Zahed's family while Bess and Javani do their best to stop the coup. However, it becomes clear that the coup must go on at all cost. This leads to a situation where Javani and Elizabeth's lives are in severe danger. If you have a look at the promo, it might just give you a hint of what's to come.

With Elizabeth heading to Iran, Henry is obviously concerned for her well-being. Elizabeth is very well aware of this and the two of them have a heart-to-heart conversation. When Elizabeth's fate hangs in the balance later in the episode, it leads to some pretty powerful emotional moments.

Some other teasers from "Tamerlane":
-There is a moment where President Dalton considers going along with the coup.
-With the staff heavily involved in the coup investigation, Nadine is forced to reveal her affair with Marsh. The reactions of the staff members are hilarious.
-Speaking of affairs, there is a nice moment between Matt and Daisy.
-Allison turns 16 in this episode, but with Bess in Iran and Henry's worries for her safety, there might not be enough time for a party.
-We will meet the Iranian President Najid Shiraz in this episode, but under what circumstances remains to be seen.
-Even though the three-part story ends, there are still some loose ends left when the hour's over. In fact, there is still a minor cliffhanger at the end.

"Tamerlane" airs Sunday at 8/7c on CBS. The promo for the episode can be seen here.
