ReplyDeleteWell, I saw that coming. Very unfortunate. Looking truly found itself in its second season with several truly standout episodes. It's a shame this show just never found its audience. It had every bit of potential to keep improving. Looking was becoming must-watch tv for me.

Well they do say that HBO tends to cancel low rating shows after 2 seasons. Which I guess is better than other networks?

ReplyDeleteProbably HBO expected an increase in ratings since they added the series order to 10 episodes for second season. The second season is better than the first even though I found the characters to be annoyingly stupid at times.

to be fussy, it never hit the 0.0, I think its worst rating was something like 0.07 which should be approximated to 0.1 if we just keep one decimal :)

ReplyDeleteyes, I think what really killed the series is that it ended the first season in growth and with ~450-500k audience, and half of these didn't come back to watch the second season, which had appalling numbers in its first half and recovered only 50-60% of it later in the season.
ReplyDeleteThat's actually a very puzzling behavior in my opinion, a series with an in-season growth and ending the first season with a high note that comes back with half of the numbers... strange.

ReplyDeletegosh. It was the superbowl episode this year too though, if I'm not mistaken (I guess that, already starting with horrible numbers, the numbers got really more depressed than last year)
Sad news for fans
ReplyDeleteProbably the first season drew the attention of casual viewers longing for new LGBT series after a list of them got cancelled altogether (!) and Starz totally straight-washing Da Vinci's Demons really made them crave something new and fast.
ReplyDeleteAfter the first episode premiered though, lots of the initial reviews on IMDb were negative, but the series itself got progressively better and ended it's first season well IMHO.
The buzz for the second season premiere just wasn't there I have no idea too. Probably Richie fans left the show for good.
Yea, I'm reading on twitter how fans think HBO should renew it despite the ratings. Maybe they don't know how LOW the ratings are?
ReplyDeleteyes, I'm not surprised by the growth during the first season, more of the drastic fall between the last episode of the first season and the first episode of the second season!
ReplyDeleteIt could very well be that the public was unhappy about the Richie story, but come on, wouldn't you be curious to see if they come back together or what happens to Richie after the breakup? And Russell Tovey got also a series of good critics in his portrait of Kevin. It could be it's that but it's still strange to me.

ReplyDeleteIt could be the timing of the season one premiere that sated the thirst for new LGBT programming. I remembered losing at the initial negative reviews of Looking, one guy wanted a gay version of Teen Wolf and the rest had other expectations as well...
ReplyDeleteCould it be that the viewers think that Looking is not a must-watch-live appointments and more like DVR and watch it later, see how it goes with their favourite characters from ppl who already watched?

ReplyDeleteIt's actually quite impressive that in the first season 5 episodes out of 8 had numbers superior to the première!
I'm sure HBO took into consideration also live+3 or live+7 numbers before making the decision... surely many people watched it after and not live.
Yeah a lot of people were longing for a new big LGBT show. Since Queer As Folk nothing has really touched on the more important things. A lot of LGBT people on my facebook were checking it out but tuned out after the first season since they found it just boring.
ReplyDeleteThe UK show 'Banana' seems to have captured an LGBT audience though. I'm seeing a lot of praise for it on facebook with how many issues they're targeting.
interesting that in the 2x05 when it touched 0.04->0.0 Looking had actually (albeit barely) more viewers than in the 1x03 episode (the other superbowl episode), that managed to get 0.1 anyway (I suppose it wouls have been something like 0.55!)
ReplyDeleteyes, it depends on what you're looking (ha!) for... the slice-of-life narration is not for everyone, it escapes the classic rules of tv series based on crisis-dealing-resolution structure.

Well viewers who disliked the premiere definitely spread the word so it got people talking and their attention.

Yeah Banana is like gay version of Skins so I like it. Cucumber, on the other hand, is not my thing at all. Cucumber probably gives more ammunitions to be used against LGBTs for the anti-gay side like NOM, AFA and their ilks though.
ReplyDeleteyes I suppose it's something like that... perhaps the viewers gave themselves the whole first season to see if it was worth continuing watching and sticked until the end, the they decided it was not worth and didn't come back for the première of the second season. At the point the novelty effect had worn off and they didn't really come back like it happened for the first season.

It's also worth noticing that the series, while the tv critics raved about it, has been pretty criticized by the gay community: too white, not inclusive enough (no trans, no bears, etc.), too contrived, hinting at making fun of "fem" gays...
The authors tried to listen at these criticisms with new characters and stories in the second season, but you cannot please everybody (and somehow you feel you are kind of ashamed on what you do in the first season and you need to make "corrections")... besides, at that point the criticism was already there, it's difficult to take it back.
Banana-Cucumber is a nice double series (with the second moving the main plot forward and the first dedicated to a different marginal character every episode), it's loud, it's sassy, it's not afraid of being uncomfortable or politically incorrect (all things Looking is not).
ReplyDeleteI was quite taken during the first episodes, but I got quite bored fast actually. Globally, Looking is a much better product.
Sadly the poison from so-called "critics" from lgbt/liberal communities works wonders and Looking geta cancelled.

ReplyDeleteWell most American series tend to be a bit preachy. I just found Cucumber and Banana to be shocking initially but after the novelty wore off, found little to nothing new underneath. Everything kind of been there done that before. Probably in Shameless, Skins, or others.

ReplyDeleteSpeaking from experience, Looking airs opposite other big Sunday shows. I'd MUCH rather watch Walking Dead live and then everything else later on.
I watched the first season of Looking on HBO Go back in December, I think. I found it moderately enjoyable. Enough to continue into the second season. I watched the first few episodes live before Walking Dead came back for its B-season.
After Walking Dead came back (around the same time where Looking finally became great), I ended up just DVRing Looking and watching it whenever I had the time in the week. Usually Monday night.
Oddly enough, Girls and Togetherness appear to be succeeding and they air alongside Looking...

ReplyDeleteWell all I am saying is there are influential people that could be key to a show's success. Much like critics reviews can sink movies on their opening weekend.
Looking got no one. The critics gave positive reviews yes but are you sure they're not just being polite? Meanwhile the opposition took everything in their power to mount the criticisms against Looking.
Sigh yes I am cynical but I am sure that The Hayes Code is still alive and well.

ReplyDeleteI found this show really boring and stopped after a few episodes. It sucks that a show about gays did terrible in the ratings but maybe next time when they do a show where the majority of the characters are gay the show should be a genre/scifi/fantasy show so it could have a chance to do good I'm the ratings.
