First of all...a public service announcement for Europe:
I’ve never heard of emergency services being ‘busy’ but in the UK and possibly Europe there is an alternate. There are two emergency numbers. In the UK we are all familiar with 999, well, if that’s busy (and I’ve never experienced that) then you can dial 112. It does EXACTLY THE SAME THING as 999. It is the standardised European number for emergencies. Neither number takes priority. They are both emergency numbers and both use triangulation to locate mobile users. Thought I should share.
With the Herman drama at it’s logical conclusion Grey’s Anatomy settled down and fed us a filler episode low on drama and high on boredom. 11.15 appeared to be a rather staid device intended to put Owen and Amelia together in the on-call room. I’m struggling to find another reason to believe in it.
As earthquakes go this one was unique in its lack of excitement and drama. Think back to the sink hole (you MUST remember that – massive Callie and Arizona foreshadowing – can the husband cut off his wife’s leg...anyway), exciting, big on-location budgets, just for a hole in the ground, compared to this damp squib of an earthquake. The most we got was Meredith leaning over a patient, Maggie getting being flirted with in an elevator and Owen, Amelia, Webber and at one point also April staring at a telephone. Did these doctors have nothing else to do? I did not feel the earth move.
How many doctors does it take to change a light bulb? None, they’re all answering one phone. Okay, poor joke, but this storyline was perhaps the very worst of season ten. Not only was it devoid of drama but it was so contrived that it was only missing the instruction “and now Amelia whispers sweet nothings in Owen’s ear while he listens intently to the patient’s breathing down the phone”. What a waste of talent and frankly less interesting than watching paint dry. And why was Webber needed? It’s clear the writers wanted to remind us of the sensitive avuncular side of Owen but we already knew this from Ethan (not the hunky new Ethan, the little boy Ethan). Owen and Amelia finally ‘did it’ so we can all relax now.
So Meredith is on a streak of good outcomes dating back to the day that Derek left. Apparently...or so we are led to believe... Meredith doesn’t need Derek in her life to be awesome. I’m inclined to believe this is down to chance rather than a lack of marital duty but still it was pretty good to see her rocking her OR, particularly as it gave Jo and Stephanie something to do. Watching Meredith this season is turning out to be pretty great. I almost wish Cristina had left earlier. Why have we had to wait so long for Meredith to stand on her own two feet. Just clarifying, I said “almost”. I love Cristina. We finished up with Meredith phoning Derek and left in limbo as we conjecture whether he’s cheating or not. I don’t think he is but if I’m wrong just remember that if you’re going to cheat in an American TV series Grey’s Anatomy is the show to cheat in. The writers are kind and very forgiving.
Oh Ethan, where have you been my life? Finally we have some new male talent on the show. Someone tell me that he’s got a multi episode arc?
I do like Maggie. I particularly like Callie taking the p*** out of Maggie’s defence of her lonely single life. This was the good filler stuff. The funny lighthearted stuff we get treated to when the heavy becomes too heavy and this week Callie did not disappoint. As a very sexual character she’s in tune to Maggie’s reticence when it comes to getting down and dirty and calls her out on it straight away. This is not, as some may assume, because Callie has sex on her mind all the time. It’s true she has used it a lot in the past as a comfort blanket but in this case she’s talking about it as a catalyst to just get Maggie out there.
Jackson Avery stepped into Mark Sloan’s shoes this week as he introduced the Plastics Posse to Ben. It is Jackson’s graduation from student to teacher. Using breasts as an analogy Ben comes to terms with his sibling’s decision to transition. The most important point here is not the transition from male to female but the emotional process. Ben is not struggling with that transition. He’s struggling with betrayal. He doesn’t understand how someone so close to him can make such a decision, how they could have gone through all the internal soul searching to make that decision without confiding in him. The writers have been careful and sensitive enough to make this about emotional family dynamic rather than gender. This was carefully done but all too safe for me. I would have rather they bring her back and allow Ben to confront his sister.
Episode 11.15, I Feel The Earth Move was rather a staid damp episode. With the exception of watching Callie enjoy herself so much I can easily forget about the earthquake. The earth didn’t move for me. I only hope it moved for Owen, Amelia and Maggie who all got back in the game.
