AMC today announced that it has placed an initial two-season order for a companion series to “The Walking Dead,” the #1 show on television among adults 18-49 for going on three seasons.
The new series (title to be announced) will be set in Los Angeles and focused on new characters and storylines. The show’s first season will consist of six one-hour episodes and premiere on AMC in late summer. The show’s second season will air in 2016.
Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and David Alpert from “The Walking Dead” are executive producers of the new series, which, like the original, is being produced by AMC Studios. Dave Erickson (“Marco Polo,” “Sons of Anarchy”), who co-created and co-wrote the pilot with Kirkman, is an executive producer and showrunner. The series will star Cliff Curtis (“Missing,” “Gang Related”), Kim Dickens (Gone Girl, “Sons of Anarchy”), Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) and Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm).
“We take incredibly seriously the notion of building a satisfying companion series to the number one show on television. From the beginning of ‘The Walking Dead’ on AMC, we’ve been asked questions about what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.’ Through this new series, we’re going to find out,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “Robert Kirkman, Dave Erickson and their writing team, along with an incomparable set of producers, cast and crew have created something remarkable and clearly distinct. We respectfully follow the request of Monty Python as we bring out (the latest of) our Dead.”
“We feel empowered by this two-season commitment, a serious show of faith from our network partner AMC,” Kirkman said. “I personally take it as a sign that they believe, like we do, that we’ve accomplished our goal of developing something original that can pay tribute to the original show and expand the world I created while at the same time having something new to say with this story. I’m very grateful that we now have the opportunity to tell this amazing story and show the fans that we really haven’t scratched the surface yet when it comes to ‘The Walking Dead.’”
“This vote of confidence from our partners at AMC is gratifying, to say the least,” Erickson said. “We’ve been blessed with amazing writers and a stellar cast – and we can’t wait to build this apocalyptic drama over the next two seasons and hopefully beyond.”
In addition, AMC Global, the international AMC-branded television network, announced it has acquired the international television rights to the series, which it plans to air within 24 hours of the U.S. premiere. AMC Global launched in late 2014 and is available in over 115 countries and territories throughout Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

not surprising at all.
ReplyDeleteReally hate it when they do this.
ReplyDeleteWhy? People are always moaning that networks don't give shows a chance. This is fantastic news.
ReplyDeleteAMC sure does have faith in this spin off and I don't blame 'em! I always wondered what the zombie apocalypse was like across the nation and with a whole new set of characters so I'm interested. Looking forward to the trailer so we can get a better look at the series. ReplyDeleteI really liked the title 'Cobalt' :(
ReplyDeleteSince the spin-off is set in the early days of the "Zombie' virus / outbreak I think it would be very interesing if past characters from "The Walking Dead" made cameo appearences ... like sa in newscasts or showing little glimpses of how it has affected the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteIt might even be interesing if certain characters ( where it's possible ) on "The Waking Dead" in present day Atlanta were actually going through the beginning of the outbreak in L.A.

ReplyDeleteI mean they did it with Better Call Saul, so its not too much of a surprise. AMC desperately needs new hit shows so this makes sense.
ReplyDeleteWhoa. Is that real?
ReplyDeletethank you for that. I was wondering where this was set up. If it were the current time that is TWD or before.
ReplyDeleteYup. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/amcs-walking-dead-prequel-lands-775509
ReplyDeleteAt this rate perhaps we will see a trailer after TWD Finale? That's my bet.
ReplyDeleteBecause by guaranteeing this show has a second season, it's taking opportunity away from another show that could be just as good or better. Doing early renewals takes away some of the consideration for other TV shows that might need another season to find their footing.
ReplyDeleteIt kind of ensures that shows that are good but not getting high numbers are not going to get the chance to improve upon it because a timeslot is already gone.
Well obviously AMC don't agree with you.
ReplyDeleteSince they already shot the pilot, I think we'll see a first look after the finale as well.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it does really bad in ratings...that would be hilarious!
ReplyDeleteWell...yeah. Not entirely sure why that needs to be pointed out.
ReplyDeleteWell, that was quick, but not surprising.
ReplyDeleteI would love some scenes like the webisodes that explain some of the scenes in twd :)
ReplyDeleteDon't get this! Why just don't give the show a longer season1 for starters and see where things go from the first airing!?
ReplyDeleteI hope it'll be on during the break of TWD. I think December would be when the pilot is aired.
ReplyDeleteDidnt AMC already do what you are asking of them by renewing Turn and HACF and giving both shows an opportunity to build an audience?
ReplyDelete"The show’s first season will consist of six one-hour episodes and premiere on AMC in late summer".
ReplyDeleteOh. Sorry XD
ReplyDeleteNOW I WANT IT TO BE LATE SUMMER.
ReplyDelete"title to be announced" oh thank god ... i thought they were sticking with that god awful one *breathes a sigh of relief*
ReplyDeleteKim Dickens is great! She's always a supporting actress, so I'm glad she's one of the leads here!
ReplyDeleteNp Ron.
ReplyDeleteWhich 'scenes' exactly are you referring to in TWD Gwen ?
ReplyDeleteYep, AMC did that with Better Call Saul. Great way to show faith in your shows.
ReplyDeleteIs late Summer = Augest?
ReplyDeleteProbably August 31st, six weeks before TWD returns.
ReplyDeleteThis is not network TV Aydrian, the rules on cable are different. Multi-season renewals granting shows the time to build an audience over 2 years has been done in the past already (most recent example: Better Call Saul)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of TWD, the show lost steam after season 1 and after a mildly charming 2nd season lost me completely (the farm felt secluded away from any remnants of civilization, gave the show an eerie undertone, however the prison and everything after felt like the world was overpopulated with people, wich made the show feel....meh. Plus the show takes itself WAY too serious for what it is) but I'm glad that the fanbase gets a second season and doesen't need to fear for more.
In fact more networks should do this, a 13 episode order for fall season always puts not needed pressure on the writers, fighting for a full-season pick-up is not only exhausting but also limits the storytellers way of telling the story.
ReplyDeleteThat and I would be incredibly grateful for every network to add a plan B series ending storylin-clause (binding showrunners to think of a fitting ending storyline when the show is concieved already) for every show in case of sudden cancellation so that the fanbase (and internet streaming services) are at least satisfied.
I'm 100% convinced that we'll run across Lori, the Governor, Andrea and other deceased characters.
ReplyDeleteDepends on how ( newcasts ) he do it.
ReplyDeleteI can't see Atlanta based Lori, the Governor, or Andrea being in LA two and a half three years ago for more then a weeks vacation .
I think airing it between late December through January would close the big gap that we always end up with lol.
ReplyDeleteI figure sometime in July. That'd be roughly halfway between seasons of the mother show.
ReplyDeleteSo "Fear the Walking Dead" is no the official title?
ReplyDeleteso its starting from the begging then, not in the same time as the walking dead, but earlier?
ReplyDeleteThis aint no ncis, this is the walking dead and i wish they left it alone instead of making this shitty second show.
ReplyDeleteYeah. This show is meant to take place right as the world began to turn.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope the show won't be called "Fear the Walking Dead", that's fuckin ridiclous heh
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt's the current title.
ReplyDeleteJust.....
ReplyDeleteNo :)
ReplyDeletedidnt say i was?
ReplyDeleteme calling this second show a mistake was not supposed to be taken personally by anyone. forgive and forget lets move on
