Chicago Fire - Forgiving, Relentless, Unconditional - Review
21 Mar 2015
Chicago Fire MR Reviews“Perhaps this loss is there to teach us not to take the ones we love for granted; to cherish the simple, mundane moments. To love others as fiercely, as bravely, and as compassionately as we can. And in that love – forgiving, relentless, unconditional love – you’ll find peace.”
The main fire this week hits close to home for Herrmann, literally. The team responds to a call in Herrmann’s childhood neighborhood. When a father runs out of a building and tells the firefighters that his son is still inside, Herrmann doesn’t hesitate to run in. He disobeys Chief’s order to pull back, which ultimately saves the baby’s life.
But something’s just not right about the fire…with the assistance of PD’s Burgess and Roman, the team discovers the father of the baby – now in critical condition – was a drug addict who started the fire. With the help of his old neighbors, Herrmann figures out where the father is hiding out (but doesn’t share it with the rest of the team). When shift is over, Herrmann pays a visit to a bar where the father is hiding out. He beats him badly but thankfully, Casey had followed Herrmann and pulled him off.
Herrmann is visibly irritated for the duration of the episode as he took the first call personally. He’s always worn his heart on his sleeve, so having him in the spotlight this week worked very well.
The baby takes a turn for the worse so Firehouse 51 goes to the hospital to wait. Now I know we’ve all given Casey a lot of grief this season, but one thing I’ve never questioned is how good of a man he is. Knowing the whole ordeal has really affected Herrmann, Casey calls Chaplain Orvlosky.
Things got even more emotional when the doctor comes out to tell the team the baby didn’t make it. It became a dark, heavy episode very quickly and while it was so sad, I’m so impressed with the writers. Sometimes, the people they pull out of burning buildings don’t make it. It’s a dark, depressing part of the job, but it’s something I think we needed to see.
Elsewhere…
Sylvie is avoiding Cruz, putting off the inevitable breakup. You know what’s sad? Sylvie is acting more broken-up and nervous about seeing Cruz than Dawson was with Casey, and they were engaged! I don’t understand it.
“He’s literally the nicest man in Chicago,” says Sylvie. Well, that’s debatable. But he’s definitely the most boring.
When Dawson said that she was in love but couldn’t make it work, I wished for the ability to reach through the TV screen and slap her. She could have made it work! But she chose her career over love. Now I’m not saying she should put a man above her dreams, but I don’t think that firefighting is her dream.
Cruz clearly knows that something’s up, and beats Sylvie to the breaking up punch. I had to laugh seeing Sylvie so surprised that she was the dumpee, not the dumper.
Well, I thought the Cruz/Sylvie storyline would be the lowest point of Chicago Fire, but I stand corrected. Otis, NO! Just no. Stop. That did not just happen. I’m hoping more than anything that Otis’ “love” for Sylvie is just a flash in the pan. The girl cannot go from one safe (boring) guy to another.
Mills’ sister appeared this week to talk to him about the estate of Grandpa Mills. No! I was really hoping we would see Grandpa Mills again. Peter’s moment with him was so emotional and moving – I’m sad we won’t get to see that relationship. Sweet Grandpa Mills left a restaurant to Peter and his sister, and she wants them to open it again. The only problem is that it’s in North Carolina.
Peter is hesitant to move (thank goodness), and receiving his medical results – all clear – seal the deal. He’s cleared for Squad! I have mixed feelings. I’ve really enjoyed seeing his as a paramedic because one, he’s awesome at it and two, he and Sylvie make an excellent team. But, if this somehow clears the way for Dawson to move back to paramedic duty, I’m on board. Oh! What if Peter doesn’t resume Squad duty, as his spot is currently occupied, but instead takes a spot on Truck, which leads to Dawson moving back to paramedic duties? Yes. I like it.
It’s a big happy reunion for Rice, April, and Severide…kind of. These three definitely have a history, I just don’t know if I care yet. After two episodes of Rice, I’m still not feeling it. April, however, I do like a bit more this week than I did last week. I don’t see any romantic chemistry between her and Severide, but I do see platonic chemistry. These two apparently had a strong friendship at one point, and I think it could still be there. But again, I just don’t know if I care yet.
I’m more interested in why Severide had to stay with a family other than his own rather than what happened when he stayed with April’s family. I want to like her, guys. I really do. But I’m just not interested.
I think back to when Voight was first introduced on Fire, followed soon by Antonio. I was captivated by those characters immediately! Then we saw the introduction of Halstead (remember his undercover scare and relationship with Gabby?) and Erin Lindsay. Again, captivating introductions. Those characters made me want to watch Chicago PD before Chicago PD ever had its pilot episode. I can’t say the same for Chicago Med.
Fire is on hiatus for a few weeks, but don’t miss the upcoming backdoor pilot for Chicago Med on April 7 (I believe). They’ll be pulling from both existing Chicago shows, as we’ll see April join Dr. Halstead (that’s right, there’s another Halstead!) in the potential spinoff.
What did you think of the episode? Should April and Rice stick around? Will Mills rejoin Squad?
I think Dawson stop showing how she felt after learning that Casey slept with someone else. But let's be honest hear, we've seen more of what Dawson feels since the break up than Casey. The guy who acts like he never cared! Being a firefighter is not her dream? Did you miss the last season. I think it's pretty clear that she wants to do that.
ReplyDeleteI think April should definitely stay and I have exactly the same impression of her "chemistry" with Severide as you do - they would make great friends. I don't know what it is with Severide and female friendships but he rocks those. :) I like his friendship with Casey too. Not so hot about this Rice guy...
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the Herrmann's storyline didn't make a big impact on me on first go, but as the time passes and the longer I think about this episode, the more I go back to this message. That is some powerful storytelling, right there, because what's important is that it STAYS with you.
I tore up at the end of this episode...as usual.
ReplyDeleteI love april and severide chemistry I think they would make a great couple because she challenges severide
ReplyDeleteI think that Severide and April has potential. April has a stubborn streak to her and that's the type that should work well with Severide. She's intriguing and I want to see where they are going to lead this pair. With Rice, I just don't get understand what his character is supposed to be. At times, he comes across as likeable, other times he seems to push around Severide and manipulate him. It's not consistent. My tally is April is a keeper/regular, Rice is more of a guest star/temporary stay.
ReplyDeleteLoving april and severide chemistry they would be a hot couple 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteYou want to like her? Lol What has April done for you not to like her. If you can have a soft spot for a racist in Mills' grandfather, who refused to meet his son's wife and kids because they were black, it shouldn't be that hard to like someone who helped Severide turn his life around. Severide has had a throw away wife, a maybe baby mama, and other flash in the pan romances but the one person who seems genuine and can provide him with some much needed stability is a no? How transparent.
ReplyDeleteYou want to like April?? What has she done for you NOT to like her?? Kelly and April have great chemistry and I can't wait for April's pov
ReplyDeleteOh wait...isn't this the same site with the obvious Katrina stans who were sanctioned by Fox for misleading viewers about the finale? And you have a unqualified hack just follow the "gendered racism against black women characters" script by claiming she can't "see" anything but a platonic relationship between April and Kelly? Knowing that NBC did a press release when they announced a 3rd Chicago Series that YaYa DaCosta's character was going to be the ROMANTIC LOVE INTEREST for Severide? But...I suppose common sense and critical thinking are not skills offered at this site, huh? Credibility Score -- ZERO!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with white reviewers and disliking black female characters, I always see them do this at this point I have come to conclude that it has to be some sort of bias against black female characters. And wasnt one of the reasons April was brought on the show was to be his love interest? And to see another White reviewer say she sees it just as platonic which is the same thing a lot of other white reviewers do when a black woman is suggested as a love interest just proves to me that there definitely is a bias against black female characters smh please check your reasons for disliking her, it's so shocking that you'd like a racist over a black woman who hasnt don't anything wrong

ReplyDeleteI feel quite the opposite abt April & Severide. I loved their chemistry in last ep but felt nothing in this one. Same for Rice, I prefer the way he was introduced. But can't wait to learn more abt them & excited to see Chicago Med ep.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Gabby could have worked it out bc everytime she tried to have a conversation with Matt he shut her out. She made mistakes but she's not the only one to blame. He overreacted sometimes. She's allowed to have dreams & he decided to be supportive. I love both characters but don't like how suddenly they're acting like strangers. I think they're hurt & don't want to show it, especially Casey.
I just loved that this episode was centered on Hermann & the storyline, although it was sad & heartbreaking. The dynamic between Hermann & Casey was great to watch. Casey's a leader & I love that abt him.
Even though I'd love to see Mills back on Squad I can't help but think there's a twist.

ReplyDeleteI will agree with you on the Casey front, he's acting like they never dated. But as for firefighting being her dream, it really hasn't. Sure, she worked for it last season, but in the first season, being a doctor was her "dream". If I thought it's what she really wanted, I'd be all-in. But you can't deny we've had moments that show she misses being a paramedic at times.
ReplyDeleteYes he really does! I'm liking April as his friend. But at the same time, I know she's being used here to pull us all in to Chicago Med, so I don't know how attached they will get.
ReplyDeleteAgreed completely!
I would agree that she challenges him, but I'd rather see them develop something on the platonic front. I'm just not getting romatic vibes from them. Also, it doesn't work to have a romance split across two different shows. Viewers who didn't watch both would miss moments.
ReplyDeleteApril will be a lead on Chicago Med, so she won't be around Fire for too long (most likely). I'm not sure what Rice's arc will be, but I don't care for him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the ending, it was definitely chilling!
Well it helps that they are both gorgeous! But I'm not seeing the romantic chemistry. Definitely a solid friendship.
ReplyDeleteApril hasn't done anything, and I don't appreciate you judging my character for my critique of a show.
ReplyDeleteApril isn't compelling yet, and that's the point I'm trying to make. I'm not saying she won't be, and I know there's a big story with Severide's past there. But she's not there yet for me.
And Mills' grandfather changed his ways, because of Peter, which was incredibly touching to see. I wanted to see more of that relationship develop.
And no, April won't provide Severide with stability. If Chicago Med takes off, she won't be on Fire, and cross-show romances don't work.
Again, I never said I didn't like her, I said she wasn't compelling...yet. She's got great platonic chemistry with Severide, but no, I don't want them together romantically. I want to see Severide in a long term relationship for once, and with Chicago Med (on which April will be starring) about to take off, she won't be on Fire long.
ReplyDelete"with Chicago Med (on which April will be starring) about to take off, she won't be on Fire long."
ReplyDeleteA lot of the time Squad members transport rescue victims in their Squad vehicle if an ambo is overloaded or not close enough to be a viable option. For instance, Squad delivered Boden and Donna to the hospital when an EMT unit wasn't available.
So there are ways April and Severide can be attached and it works better than Lindsay and Severide. It's an avenue that they can explore on Chicago Fire or Chicago Med (perhaps in a crossover episode).
I'm interested to see who will be on Chicago Med along with April and Dr. Halstead. They kind of tried a Chicago Med a while back with different doctors, so I don't know how everyone will fit in together.
ReplyDeleteI just want to see Dawson and Casey reconcile! We waited so long to see these two get together, and I hate how it is now.
Casey is definitely a natural leader, and so is Herrmann. I love seeing them work together.
I agree! I think there are a few twists ahead.
Oh, I agree that it would work better than Lindsay and Severide, but think about it this way:
ReplyDeleteIf there are viewers who don't watch both (and there will be), some set of viewers is always missing moments in the relationship. Who would get to see them kiss? Say "I love you?" etc. Some viewership would miss key moments. If the writers can figure out a way to make it work, more power to them. But I just don't see it happening.
You bring up a great point. I'm not sure how the writers are going to approach April and Severide moving forward, but if they are attempting the crossover romance again, they likely have some plan in place to get them together more frequently than Lindsay and Severide. It will be interesting to see it unfold and how viewers respond to it. The fact that there's both pro and con sides to this relationship means there's a viewer response being generated and at least it worked to get viewers talking.
ReplyDeleteI'm so tired of reviewers saying that they "want to like" the black woman but FOR SOME REASON they just aren't interested. and she definitely shouldn't be in any romance! it's a really obvious pattern of coded racism. sorry so many of us have caught onto it.
ReplyDeleteThe real racists are people like you who see racism in everything even when it does not exist.
ReplyDeleteThere is NOTHING racist in this review.
The reviewer is allowed to not like a particular character. No matter if they are green, blue, black, purple, or orange.
Seriously so you are suggesting that just because they are black they have to like them? Now that is racism
Very true! I just didn't care much for the Lindsay/Severide romance, I don't want Severide to be another anchoring point...again. Let the Chicago Med characters stand on their own, let's see how they interact among themselves and establish their "world" first.
ReplyDeletewho am I racist against?
ReplyDeleteLol There is a crossover romance happening with Chicago PD and Fire right now it's minor but it's there so the writers can make this work if they want to. Ppl were all for Lindsey and Severide even tho they were on different shows. To claim the writers can't make April a stable gf because she's another show flies right back in the face of you wanting them to be just friends. How can she be a close friend to him but not a gf? Severide admitted that April's friendship and taking him in changed him, that's not touching, but an old racist man finally talking to his grandson after disowning him for years is? That's hella transparent. You allow your character to show through your opinions and your opinion is to erase April right out of her own storyline and make it solely focus on Severide. Do really think people that enjoy her character will be happy with that? Those that enjoy April and Severide as a couple will make a point to watch both shows and even casual viewers might be lured into watching both just to see what happens. I think most Chicago Fire fans would love to see how Severide is in something long term. But to be honest I don't think the logistics of them being on separate shows is why you want them to remain friends. April was cast as a love interest to Severide, so clearly the powers that be see the romantic chemistry and the potential. April has had 5 scenes none of which were written in a romantic light and you've ALREADY stamped her as no. For you to cast her (and Chicago Med) aside so quickly is alarming.
ReplyDeleteYour telling the reviewer that they have to like someone because of color. Look up racism in the dictionary.
ReplyDeleteVery well said
ReplyDeleteYou are the only person here who has brought up color.
ReplyDeleteno, I am saying that there are hundreds of reviews like this one that don't like black women and can't quite put their finger on why. and this review contributes to a pattern of racism that I'm tired of. I'm not alone in feeling this way, and I think my fellow white people should consider why this kind of reaction to black women in television is so common.
ReplyDeleteThen go read another review then and stop making an issue when there is not one.
ReplyDeleteI wonder where you read that "they want to like" the black woman. Did you mean they want to like a character and don't? I hope you did because the only place race was mentioned was in your post.
ReplyDeleteSimply saying, if a person doesn't like a character that happens to be black, they are racist? GTFOH with that nonsense.
ReplyDeleteI forgot if you pretend not to see color it doesn't exist
ReplyDeleteWTF? I see people/characters not colors. YOU are the one with the problem.
ReplyDeleteYou are the one who sees color in everything. You are the racist.
I never said "no" to her, I said "not yet". And yes, a cross-show friendship can work, but a romance most likely can't.
ReplyDeleteI haven't cast her aside, I'm just not interested yet. I'm also not interested in Rice yet, or Capp.
I wanted to see more of Severide's relationship with Dawson, and Casey. I wanted to see Welch and Newhouse stay on Squad...these are the storylines I wanted to see.
Do you think they would out right say they can't see a romance between April and Severide due to race? That's where coded language comes in. If someone can cheer for and want to see more of a racist man that disowned his son's black family but won't even give a black women a chance to explore romance with Severide, it's going to raise flags. Especially when it's a pattern. Reviewers and TV fans routinely put BW paired with WM leads in the "better off as friends" category. April/Severide, Rick/Michonne, Abbie/Ichabod, Bonnie/Damon, Braeden/Derek and even long standing comic couples such Barry/Iris. Sorry if you haven't noticed this trend but it happens way too much and it's not okay that this discussion is being silenced and censored. All of sudden people are showing up just to down vote our comments and say we have no point but don't have anything to say about the review itself. Suspect.
ReplyDeleteI am black myself and there is NOTHING racist in that review. Stop trying to make an issue where there is none. You are just embarrassing yourself.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should take up your complaints with the writers of the characters. It's their job to make a character likeable.
ReplyDeletethis site has a history of disliking black women characters, and they've been blocking people here and on twitter for pointing that out
ReplyDeleteNo it does not. Where on earth and please provide links to ANY article where they dislike black people. I've been coming here 5 years and have NEVER seen anything like that.
ReplyDeleteStop making stuff up.
So you say "not yet" to April because the writers won't give you the storyline you want? How is getting the storyline you want going to make April and Severide suddenly have romantic chemistry and a crossover romance be okay?
ReplyDeleteOnce again if the show can fit in scenes of them hanging out as friends and working on their friendship why can't they fit in scenes of them being a relationship? I'm really puzzled as to why you are so dead set on this not working.
There are literally hundreds of reviews for black women from shows like Greys/The Walking Dead/Scandal/The100/HTGAWM/Blackish/Empire/OITNB/Suits and more. Don't be a trouble making hypocrite looking for an issue where there is none.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for April either, please call me a racist so I can tell you that you don't know what you're talking about. If it wasn't on this site, I wouldn't even be that polite.
Anyway, thank you for another great review Meghan. I'm still not on board with April and I am so very happy that Sylvie and Cruz appear to be ending. Otis/Cruz/Dawson are my least favorite characters so I tend to FF them when I can.
ReplyDeleteNo. You are embarrassing yourself about lying about being black for one. If you were black what makes you think you speak for all of us? Who made you Al Sharpton? I'm speaking for myself. This is public forum I'm allowed to question her review. You keep saying the same thing over and over again like your opinion matters more and without giving any counter points. You are just trying to silence us.
ReplyDeleteI feel like white women always want to see black women as strong, platonic characters. Black women can be soft, fragile and loved. It's seldom seen on TV.
ReplyDeleteCan we not undermine the sexual agency of black women by having white women like you automatically sidelining then into a platonic role? It's degrading. You did the same thing regarding Abbie Mills on Sleepy Hollow. It's a pattern of encouraging erasure.
ReplyDeleteSeveride is arguably the most popular character on Chicago Fire. So I see why they use him as an anchoring point. It's a solid business decision.
ReplyDeleteIt's really depressing that people need to make flimsy excuses in order to sideline yet another black live interest in a platonic role. I think it's really disturbing that the SpoilerTv twitter is blocking all users (mainly poc) who ask about their article's and specifically this writer's history of advocacy for sidelining black female characters in favor of white ones.
ReplyDeleteApparently black people and poc aren't free to discuss racism that effects them as consumers.
Well I asked before and despite my non-agressive, un-confrontational tone it was deleted. May I ask why my comment was deleted? May I also ask why comments from black women who are addressing and speaking out against antiblack misogyny were deleted? Was it because I concluded that the writer of this article had a pattern of advocacating for the sidelining and erasure of black women in other media? If you refuse to engage, fine. But don't silence black women or people of color who are trying to share their experiences and opions with you, especially when they're being perfectly polite.
ReplyDeleteSilencing and censoring antiracism advocacy from Black's and POC it's a literal white supremacist tactic. Please do not stoop to their level. Allow black voices to be heard, even if you disagree with them.

Wow, what is up with the negative comments for this review? Don't listen to them! Just because you don't like April yet does not make you racist or mean people are "undermining" women of color. Color has nothing to do with it. Right now, it just feels like April is a plot device for one: Severide's past, and two: Chicago Med promotion. Once there is a real opportunity to flesh her character out, I'm sure she will be more liked. Plus, I really just want Severide and Brett together, so anyone that stands in the way of that, I tend to be more irritable towards. Which brings me to: OTIS?! Seriously, that better be nothing. I completely agree that it would make no sense to go from one "boring" character to the next. What are they thinking?!
ReplyDeletePeople really need to stop jumping to the conclusion that just because someone doesn't like a character of color or doesn't ship them with the white character, that it's because they are of color. Are there people out there like that? Of course, but I'm certain this isn't the case. And before anyone tries to call me out because I want Severide with Brett, take a nice long look at my ships on my Tumblr because I love the heck out of a lot of mixed race and people of color pairings. http://owenselliot.tumblr.com/shows
Just putting that out there because I see it all too much lately.
Well I'm glad Cruz was the one to dump Brett, he always the one getting dumped. As for April and Kelly, i really don't care who he ends up with. I'm just glad that Erin and Kelly are dead in the water. So he can be with April
ReplyDeleteOliver Platt, S.Epatha Merkerson, Laurie Holden, along with a Yaya Decosta, and Nick Gehlfuss. Dawsey is pretty much the only reason I watch CF.
ReplyDeleteMay I ask you something different?
ReplyDeleteI want Severide and April to have a platonic friendship. I want it very much. Why? Because that kind of relationship is my favorite. Why are platonic relationships always sidelined in favor of romantic ones? Why do people consider romantic relationships something "better", more "worthy"?
I consider myself asexual and while I can't count on clearly asexual representation on tv, (because it's even more underrepresented than poc or same-sex relationships -- it's completely nonexistent) -- I want to at least enjoy a platonic friendship between two characters -- one of which I like and the other one I'm warming up to -- and not have it thrown in my face that I'm apparently racist, because I don't want April to be romantically involved with Severide.
Romantic relationship isn't, or shouldn't be more valuable than friendship.
We all want to see Matt & Gabby back together. We've waited long enough. Hopefully soon!
