Battle Creek - Syruptitious - Review: "More character insight"

Battle Creek aired its second episode on Sunday. Besides providing a nice case of the week, the episode also gave us more insight into the characters who we are spending these episodes with.

But first, a recap of the case of the week. A man named Edward (Eddy) Floss is found naked in the woods. It turns out the victim was drowned in maple syrup, and Russ and Milt deduce that it was meant to send a message. Apparently, there is a maple syrup cartel in Battle Creek lead by Julio MacFarland. Eddy was standing up to the cartel, so the team wants to get a search warrant. However, the judge is not granting them anything. Therefore, Russ and Milt decide to go undercover. The victim's father-in-law provides them with real syrup and the duo helps him in making it. However, Russ is shot during the undercover sting. In the end, it turns out the cartel had nothing to do with Edward's death. He was hitting his wife so she presumably stood up to him and killed him. Her father also confesses and it's decided that he should go to prison.

On the character front, Russ is going behind Milt's back in the case, despite Commander Guziewicz's orders that the two pair up. Russ is pretty unlucky throughout the episode, being bitten by a dog and later being shot. Most of all, Russ still doesn't trust Milt, because he is not telling why he came to Battle Creek. Elsewhere, Font has a headache, but he gets fake stuff from his medical pot dealer. Font was unable to arrest him for that though, but later with Milt by his side, Font arrests him anyway. We also learned that Aaron Funkhauser has a fiancée while Detective Niblet is married. In this episode we also met the Meredith, the medical examiner who is very small in height.

This was a nice episode, though not necessarily an improvement from the pilot. It was nice to get some more character insight and I'm very curious as to the reason why Milt came to Battle Creek. The case was a good one, but I'm surprised at the ambiguous ending. There was no definitive answer as to who killed Edward, but the Commander just decided to put the father in jail. The moment when Milt and Russ made the maple syrup, felt like Breaking Bad. The episode also started with a voiceover, which was kind of unnecessary. I think Russ was very unlucky in this episode since he was also suspended. It was hilarious that Milt hired him as a consultant, for just one dollar!

What did you think of this episode? Did you enjoy the case of the week? Are you glad we got a bit more insight into the characters? And why do you think Milt came to Battle Creek? I would love to hear your opinions in the comment section below.

The next Battle Creek episode airs Sunday at 10/9c on CBS. Watch the promo for the episode here.
