TO, Reign and The Flash WILL make it. I'm 100% sure. The 100 has shortened seasons, so that's a no. Definitely no to JTV. It will probably run just for two seasons. Even though Jina received a Golden Globe. Maybe to Beauty and the Beast.
Can somebody explain to me how many episodes are needed to get syndication ! 4 full seasons or ? And syndication still important now that they make deals with Netflix, Hulu etc ?
Isn't it a bit soon? Some of these shows that got renewed for a third season could get close to Nikita demos during this last stretch of S2, compromising the # of episodes they'll get in s3.
The 100 - but only becasue it has short seasons, to get to the required number for syndication would probably mean 7 seasons would be required and I just can't see it doing that many (although I would love to be proved wrong!)
What about Hart of Dixie they will have 79 ep at the end of S4 ? And Mark Pedowitz said that they haven't decided yet if it is the finale season or not ... and the ratings are better !
All of them will. Beauty and the Beast is at 44 episodes and by the end of summer it will be 57 ... the CW will pick it up as a summer show until it reaches 88 episodes. Reign will be at 66 episodes by the end of season 3 and will be picked up as a summer show after that until it reaches 88 episodes in season five. The Originals will be at 66 episodes by the end of season 3 and will surly be picked up for a forth to get it to 88 episodes. The Flash isn't going anywhere anytime soon and by next summer it will be at 44 episodes and still going strong. Jane the Virgin isn't going anywhere either and like it or not will be around for another 3 seasons. The 100 will keep trucking along until it reaches 88 episodes even if it does it as a summer show.
The 100 won't make it but i don't they and The CW don't care too much. Killing off characters and giving me heart attacks is WAY more important to them.
Do want 88 episodes though? The great thing about The 100 is that you can see that they have an ending in mind. I don't want to live in a world where The 100 has filler episodes.

A show certainly can continue after syndication, if the ratings are strong enough and it doesn't mean it's ending. As far as I get syndication means the show can be sold and streamed on other channels or something. The syndication deals are also a way for the network to earn money.
They can and often do continue past syndication, especially popular shows, like NCIS has over 250 episodes. But with low rated shows they can end once they hit the magic number, like Fringe got 100 eps. It really depends.
I think the best thing about The 100 is that it can go on forever and won't get boring with new areas and new grounder clans. I really hope they will fight through and keep up the quality of the show. :)

The 100 could make it. If they only need 88 episodes, then it only needs to go 5 seasons. Which isn't that unrealistic. Sure, the writers don't spend too much time on filler episodes and move their plots at a decent pace. But they haven't even introduced the Sea, or the city of lights, and they've gone so many unexpected routes, I could see them lasting 5 seasons without having to waste time on any filler storylines. So The 100 could definitely make it. I think The Flash and The Originals are the most likely. I haven't watched Jane The Virgin, but I still feel safe saying I don't think it'll make it to 88 episodes. People say it's brilliant, but based on the premise alone, I'd question how the story will go after she has her baby. But like I said, I haven't watched it. Haven't watched Beauty & the Beast either, but it won't make it. I gave up on Reign, but I'll give it a maybe. I'm surprised it made it past one season.

I voted for Reign. I think the ratings decline might be due to the fact that the show is supposed to be about historical figures and it's getting too deep into the supernatural. The CW may be hard-pressed to find sponsors even if the show did reach enough episodes to go to syndication.

I'm glad that someone mentioned The Flash. I lost interest in Arrow a while ago, and I've been hearing about storylines on that show that make me want to watch it less and less. The Flash is technically a spin-off, which means that the writers and producers will have to work harder than usual to keep it going long after Arrow is off the air. The problem here is that The Flash might be on its way to peaking as a hit show a little bit too soon. I don't see a problem with this show making it to syndication, though. The CW will want that much from it, along with The Originals and Jane the Virgin, which surprised everyone with how good and successful it is.

The CW may be looking for a good syndication package for it; the show once was a huge hit for them, so maybe they are trying to make a lot of money through a deal and haven't find a network that will take their offer That's the only explanation I can come up with
Some shows don't get syndicated until after the final season. It all depends on how the show ends and whether any network anticipates viewers wanting to watch the show again. Right now things are touchy because of shippers blowing up Twitter before, during, and after every episode. I'm not sure how much CW execs know about what Julie Plec has planned for the end of the series. It's possible that she isn't completely sure herself. She might be changing her mind about details as certain stories move forward and fans have their various reactions. I thought I heard talk of a Season 8, which means that some people might not have any idea what's going on.
By season 5 it will have 75 episodes, and The CW syndicated Nikita with 72, and will pobably do so with HoD with 76 episodes, so maybe they can pull it off by season 5. But I hope the show runs for 7 seasons, with the final one being 9 episodes, so that the show can end with 100 episodes :)

The Originals is in a similar situation to Reign but it's doing better ratings-wise. I think it's more likely to get a full 22 episode 3rd season. That'll guarantee a 4th at the very least. The Flash is safe.

If that consistency continues then It'll probably just keep going on till it reaches the 70~ mark. I can see it getting bumped to summer at some point though. Jane the Virgin isn't an amazing ratings performer but if it continues to bring in awards and recognition to the CW then I doubt they'll end it before syndication hits. If something knocks it off its pedestal next TV season though then its a goner.
And objectively, I think things are miffy for both the 100 and Reign. However I think at least ONE of them might make it... (my money is on the 100)...
BataB-I see the upcoming third season as its last, The 100 Jane -I see it doing 0.2-0.3 this spring and getting cancelled after second season,first time ever Reign could go either way-getting a full third and short( CW seems to love & support it & it's doing better than BatB) than it will or I can see it getting BatB treatment-short third & final. Welll.... I only care about the 100 here. If any show on the list deserves many more episodes to come its the 100 (I've caught episodes of the Flash& I guess its just not for me but I understand the hype.... everything else well.....) I think if it gets season 2 on netflix by Summer ratings should be able to increase for Season 3. Season 3 will be very telling as to what the future holds. Story wise.... there is so much more left of Earth to explore & the show deserves many many seasons. If renewed for Season 4 with growing viewership I think the show does have a shot for syndication in the long run.
Seriously doubt it; the chance of that happenig is not only low, but extremely unlikely. Next to impossible I may say. The Flash is not only a huge hit for the network, it has the DC brand which will warrant a syndication a package, and most likely a good one
The show is ok. The problem is that is very uneven. Some storylines are great while other storylines are just boring or fillers. This season was great until Mary's rape :/
Now what is syndication? Syndication is another network aquiring the rights to air a show. But what is rather syndicated? Something with a storyline that goes from start to finish during the whole series run or a show that is rather focusing on issues of the week? Clearly MOTW episodes like Supernatural/Angel/Buffy produced them are more appealing for syndication.
Not even eligable for syndication because it doesen't have the right format to be syndicated:
TVD (despite 100+ episodes still hasn't found a syndication home) TO (heavily serialized) Reign (same as TO and probably won't crack the 88+ episode mark) The 100 (serialized and not going to 88+)
Fitting for syndication but far from the needed episode number:
BatB (maybe issue of the week heavy but still lacks the episode count)
The Flash (MOTW but only has 46 episodes ordered so far) Jane the Virgin (issue of the week heavy but only has 44 episodes ordered so far)
Going to make it to syndication:
Arrow (villain of the week, 92 ordered episodes) Hart of Dixie (WB would be dumb not to order 12 more episodes and bring it to 88)
Syndication is used SO MUCH as an excuse for poor ratings, if a show doesen't have the right format it won't make it to syndication (for example: LOST isn't heavily syndicated. Why? Because of an ongoing storyline that casual viewers will lose track of)
I hate how people use syndication, wich is pretty much based on mere goodwill from other stations, as an excuse for awfull numbers
Honestly I only see The Flash and Arrow syndicated. Maybe HOD.
The others, even if they reach 88 episodes, won't be in syndication for the simple reason that they are way too serialized, and serialized shows rarely (if ever) do well in syndication. Besides, the CW will probably be content with getting them around 70 episodes, the only ones I see going all the way to 88 are Flash and the Originals. The others will probably doing 0.1s or 0.0 by the time they get to 70~ episodes.
Good point. Do you think deals with Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime could make any impact on renewal decisions? Netflix already has the previous seasons for all the CW shows except for the Freshman shows but do you think a deal with Hulu (like Hulu did with FX) and/or Amazon to stream all the seasons would make that much of a difference in renewal odds - particularly if the show had a proper ending? I think it depends on the show (for example, I think The Blacklists $2min per episode deal with Netflix definitely makes a difference - assuming that's for more than just S1 - whereas another season of a show they already stream for much less per episode makes less of an impact).
The real question is if CW will survive once its deal with the local networks will expire next year . Based on general performance and ratings , renewal is not granted. And If it doesn't happen most of the above shows will be dead way before syndication.
Because it happens sometimes-for example Hit the Floor had10 episodes in season one ,13 in season two,season three will have 10.Especially with such a full schedule,CW might not have room for 16 episodes.
Oh , I see syndication. Well if Reign airs long enough for the required amount..... Doubtful giving the downtrend in ratings. But Jane might build up an audience by next season and be renewed for a third and fourth season . Word of moth and critical acclaim are very positive.
Maybe not but Searluzed shows have been syndicated-Good Wife in season five & six is becoming more Searluzed yet got a syndication deal.OTH was serialzed yet it ran in syndication for years.BH 90210,OC,too.DH was serilized yet it ran for a few years in syndication.90210 which is Searluzed is now syndicated.
There's a difference though, Good Wife was case of the week in earlier seasons and OC/90210/OTH are teen shows that posed differen things to deal with each week.
TVD doesen't have that, neither does Reign or TO. Same goes for 100
The OC,90210,OTW were NOT dealing with all new stuff each week,most of the sl were ongoing lasting several episodes .They were serialzed . shows you couldn't just jump into in an episode..It dosent matter if a shows serialzed or not.Glees serialzed. So was Ugly Betty and both are syndicated..Charmed also became more sear,used in seasons 4-8.
The chance of some major affiliates dropping them is a real risk though. It would only take a few big ones to make the already risky finances of the CW non viable. I don't think it will happen but I don't think they are safe in the water either.
Since syndication is actually someone else airing the show and not the number of episodes, I will say all of them make it to syndication. It might take a decade but I like their chances. There is a real push to not have as many repeats these days and a gazillion and one channels. If sold for a cheap enough price, even a show off the magic 88 episode mark will likely become syndicated at some point. What else are you going to show on channel 1,937 at 3 am after the infomercials run out?
I`m halfway trough season 1(1x16) and I like it, bay it haves it`s issue IMO, I reallly like Mary, the queen and the king, but all the other characters semm blend and a 1000 times seen. The romantic part of the show and the, one more time, love triangle make me wanna quit, but I´ll keep watching at least `till the end of S1
My only doubt with Reign is that period dramas usually are much shorter (30-50 eps), how are they going to keep it interesting and historically accurate for 70-90 eps?
The good news I have for you is that the love triangle definitely gets resolved half way through season 1, you should be about to get there actually. There is resolution to it and gets closed for good. So it wasn't a case of a love triangle looming on the show's horizon forever, it was just a case of it being one particular storyline on the show. Try it out until the end of Season 1, I think that is a good idea ;)
If they plan to keep it at least partially accurate then season 3 would probably involve the events surrounding the treaty of Edinburgh. Season 4 would probably deal with Francis' illness (the prophecy coming true). Ending with Mary returning to Scotland. I doubt they'll go further then that.

ReplyDeleteWelll.... I only care about the 100 here. If any show on the list deserves many more episodes to come its the 100 (I've caught episodes of the Flash& I guess its just not for me but I understand the hype.... everything else well.....) I think if it gets season 2 on netflix by Summer ratings should be able to increase for Season 3. Season 3 will be very telling as to what the future holds. Story wise.... there is so much more left of Earth to explore & the show deserves many many seasons. If renewed for Season 4 with growing viewership I think the show does have a shot for syndication in the long run.

ReplyDeleteLimited series means less than 22 episode a season but still can go on for several seasons if ratings are deccent

ReplyDeleteThe Flash is not only a huge hit for the network, it has the DC brand which will warrant a syndication a package, and most likely a good one
I see no reason why The 100 would go back to 13. Why renew a show to make its road to syndication even harder?
ReplyDeleteThe show is ok. The problem is that is very uneven. Some storylines are great while other storylines are just boring or fillers. This season was great until Mary's rape :/

ReplyDeleteSyndication is another network aquiring the rights to air a show. But what is rather syndicated? Something with a storyline that goes from start to finish during the whole series run or a show that is rather focusing on issues of the week? Clearly MOTW episodes like Supernatural/Angel/Buffy produced them are more appealing for syndication.
Not even eligable for syndication because it doesen't have the right format to be syndicated:
TVD (despite 100+ episodes still hasn't found a syndication home)
TO (heavily serialized)
Reign (same as TO and probably won't crack the 88+ episode mark)
The 100 (serialized and not going to 88+)
Fitting for syndication but far from the needed episode number:
BatB (maybe issue of the week heavy but still lacks the episode count)
The Flash (MOTW but only has 46 episodes ordered so far)
Jane the Virgin (issue of the week heavy but only has 44 episodes ordered so far)
Going to make it to syndication:
Arrow (villain of the week, 92 ordered episodes)
Hart of Dixie (WB would be dumb not to order 12 more episodes and bring it to 88)
Syndication is used SO MUCH as an excuse for poor ratings, if a show doesen't have the right format it won't make it to syndication (for example: LOST isn't heavily syndicated. Why? Because of an ongoing storyline that casual viewers will lose track of)
I hate how people use syndication, wich is pretty much based on mere goodwill from other stations, as an excuse for awfull numbers
Honestly I only see The Flash and Arrow syndicated. Maybe HOD.
ReplyDeleteThe others, even if they reach 88 episodes, won't be in syndication for the simple reason that they are way too serialized, and serialized shows rarely (if ever) do well in syndication.
Besides, the CW will probably be content with getting them around 70 episodes, the only ones I see going all the way to 88 are Flash and the Originals. The others will probably doing 0.1s or 0.0 by the time they get to 70~ episodes.
Good point. Do you think deals with Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime could make any impact on renewal decisions? Netflix already has the previous seasons for all the CW shows except for the Freshman shows but do you think a deal with Hulu (like Hulu did with FX) and/or Amazon to stream all the seasons would make that much of a difference in renewal odds - particularly if the show had a proper ending? I think it depends on the show (for example, I think The Blacklists $2min per episode deal with Netflix definitely makes a difference - assuming that's for more than just S1 - whereas another season of a show they already stream for much less per episode makes less of an impact).
ReplyDeleteThe real question is if CW will survive once its deal with the local networks will expire next year . Based on general performance and ratings , renewal is not granted. And If it doesn't happen most of the above shows will be dead way before syndication.
ReplyDeleteBecause it happens sometimes-for example Hit the Floor had10 episodes in season one ,13 in season two,season three will have 10.Especially with such a full schedule,CW might not have room for 16 episodes.

ReplyDeleteWell if Reign airs long enough for the required amount..... Doubtful giving the downtrend in ratings.
But Jane might build up an audience by next season and be renewed for a third and fourth season . Word of moth and critical acclaim are very positive.
it dosent matter if ashow is serialized or not-theyres a buyer out there for every show if the price is right.

ReplyDeleteMaybe not but Searluzed shows have been syndicated-Good Wife in season five & six is becoming more Searluzed yet got a syndication deal.OTH was serialzed yet it ran in syndication for years.BH 90210,OC,too.DH was serilized yet it ran for a few years in syndication.90210 which is Searluzed is now syndicated.

ReplyDeleteThe OC,90210,OTW were NOT dealing with all new stuff each week,most of the sl were ongoing lasting several episodes .They were serialzed . shows you couldn't just jump into in an episode..It dosent matter if a shows serialzed or not.Glees serialzed. So was Ugly Betty and both are syndicated..Charmed also became more sear,used in seasons 4-8.

ReplyDeleteThe chance of some major affiliates dropping them is a real risk though. It would only take a few big ones to make the already risky finances of the CW non viable. I don't think it will happen but I don't think they are safe in the water either.
ReplyDeleteSince syndication is actually someone else airing the show and not the number of episodes, I will say all of them make it to syndication. It might take a decade but I like their chances. There is a real push to not have as many repeats these days and a gazillion and one channels. If sold for a cheap enough price, even a show off the magic 88 episode mark will likely become syndicated at some point. What else are you going to show on channel 1,937 at 3 am after the infomercials run out?
ReplyDeleteI`m halfway trough season 1(1x16) and I like it, bay it haves it`s issue IMO, I reallly like Mary, the queen and the king, but all the other characters semm blend and a 1000 times seen. The romantic part of the show and the, one more time, love triangle make me wanna quit, but I´ll keep watching at least `till the end of S1
ReplyDeleteMy only doubt with Reign is that period dramas usually are much shorter (30-50 eps), how are they going to keep it interesting and historically accurate for 70-90 eps?
ReplyDeleteThe good news I have for you is that the love triangle definitely gets resolved half way through season 1, you should be about to get there actually. There is resolution to it and gets closed for good. So it wasn't a case of a love triangle looming on the show's horizon forever, it was just a case of it being one particular storyline on the show. Try it out until the end of Season 1, I think that is a good idea ;)
ReplyDeleteIf they plan to keep it at least partially accurate then season 3 would probably involve the events surrounding the treaty of Edinburgh. Season 4 would probably deal with Francis' illness (the prophecy coming true). Ending with Mary returning to Scotland. I doubt they'll go further then that.
