In this week's episode, Liz worked on solving a few cold cases even as she lingered on death's door, while Stefan and Caroline took a major step forward in their relationship and Jeremy said goodbye to Mystic Falls. For the most part, it was an episode focused on changes and farewells, except for the bit about Enzo stalking Sarah, which still doesn't fit in with any other part of the ongoing storyline (sigh). I had a caveat here and there, but if my tears were anything to go by, there was enough done right in this episode to make it a memorable and powerful one.
"Sometimes really terrible things happen to amazing people." Oh, Liz! I seriously couldn't handle her going, even though we knew it was coming. First, she spent time with Damon trying to crack unsolved cases before vacating her Sheriff's job, and one aspect I really liked about the episode was the writers letting Liz and Damon spend some time together and highlighting their unlikely and very poignant friendship. There's a level of respect and reverence Damon shows Liz that is extremely rare coming from him. After quickly and hilariously ascertaining that the vast majority of unsolved crimes in Mystic Falls were committed by Damon himself, the duo proceeded to analyze the death of Elena's parents in the Wickery Bridge car crash. As it turned out, like Liz's illness, the car accident had no supernatural explanation, and was a senseless and terrible incident of random bad luck.
After Liz headed home for a rest in her snuggly pjs (Damon telling her she looked hot was too funny, as was her retort), Liz mentioned to Damon her feelings of powerlessness over her fate, and he reminded her that people are just helpless against such things (Damon's expression was heartbreaking in that moment). Then Liz pondered her own extraordinary ordinariness and Caroline's extraordinary nature, and if you weren't already bawling by then, the episode had plenty more twists of sadness still to come.
"I think we both know I never really hated you." Caroline's plan was to prepare a cosy cabin getaway for her mother to relax in during her final days. Tragically, she had no way of knowing how quickly Liz's demise was closing in, and even as Caroline strove to simultaneously stall the inevitable and create an ideal setting for Liz, time was running out. The writers had no problem hammering home the sadly strange fact of mortality as all of these immortal vampire characters dealt with the loss of Liz. Stefan went along to help fix up the house and exchange adorably affectionate gazes with Caroline, who wondered if he was just there to fulfill his promise to Liz that he would take care of her. But as Stefan assured Caroline, he had more reasons:
Stefan: "Because you're my friend. Because I know what it feels like to lose a mother. And because when you told me you hated me, it was pretty much the worst thing I had heard in a long time."
Let's face it, no one would want to be hated by sweet, sunshiny Caroline! Least of all Stefan, whose self-imposed emotional exile has slowly crumbled since the beginning of Season 6, leaving him able to express his warm feelings towards Miss Forbes. And then...
The pair finally locked lips, in an endearingly tentative and tender manner reflective of the gentle bond they share. Plus, the sun totally shone through their kiss, and we all know that on TVD, this means that the Gods of Love approve this union. Okay, so I was a little surprised that they went with that visual theme again, but it was a lovely scene.
Stefan and Caroline's peaceful happiness was not to last long, however, as Liz slipped away while visiting with Damon, sending the gang back to the hospital. Poor Caroline was horrified that she wasn't able to speak with Liz before she died, as her mother was now moments away from passing. However, Stefan helped Caroline to communicate with her mother as she and Liz shared the memory of Caroline's bike ride as a child, with Liz understanding when it was okay to let go and allow Caroline to ride away on her own. This was a beautiful moment of symbolism, and while it saddens me that Liz and Caroline didn't have the last conversation they both yearned for, this memory carried all of the meaning their words could have conveyed.
Graduation day. Meanwhile, the time had come for Jeremy to leave Mystic Falls, supposedly to head off to a nice art school. After bonding with Elena and generally being more likable than he's been since birth, Jeremy met up with Alaric as he prepared to head off on a bus, not a plane as he had told his sister. Yup, turns out that instead of embracing his artistic side, Jeremy is taking up his vampire hunting ways again, assisted by Alaric, who will keep him updated on suspicious deaths so he has cases to solve on his journeys. Um.
I would have found art school a lot more believable. Jeremy as a vampire hunter was understandable back when that plotline initially emerged, but aside from a few little battles here and there, he's done little of it and expressed little interest in that life of late. Plus, you mean to tell me that Jeremy can't go online and do his own Sam Winchester article searches to find cases? It's nice that Ric is helping, but damn, maybe Jeremy shouldn't have been allowed to graduate high school early. Even though I personally felt nothing but glee at
The continuing adventures of Enzo in a quasi-spin-off tangent that dwindles in purposelessness. I just keep waiting for this subplot to become relevant in any way to the show, but it is not happening. Still, despite the frustrations of watching Enzo manipulate Sarah in vengeance against Stefan, something keeps me hoping that this is going somewhere, someday. Like, maybe Sarah will turn out to be sassy and a real challenge for Enzo, more so than he imagined, and she will throw him for a loop. Perhaps the reasons for Enzo's hatred of Stefan will become more believable and draw the subplot back into the orbit of the rest of the show. We shall see.
Next week's episode will likely be a difficult one. Caroline's despair will probably be hard to get through, and it is truly awful (and cruel on the writers' part) that she has now lost both parents. I hope she can cope with her grief, but worry she may take a dark turn following these events.

Pretty powerful episode.
ReplyDeleteCaroline-Stefan~Candice absolutely killed
itthis episode,i was in tears when she broke down at the end.Although
i'mstruggling to come to terms with the idea of steroline as a
couple,the
moments between them in the cabin were wonderfully shot and edited. The
background score was exceptional.I also loved how stefan helped her to
be able to say final goodbye to her mom-that was beautiful.
Damon-Liz~For a moment,i thought the accident of elena's parents was not a mere
accident & was kinda bummed when they confirmed it finally after
years of speculation,i still loved the idea why they brought this topic
in this episode.Liz wanted to find a reson so badly so that her own
death would make somewhat sense to her.Unfortunately life is harsh &
doesn't work that way.All the moments between liz and damon were pure
gold. The scene where she said-I'm exceptionally ordinary & i'm okay
with that.caroline is anything but-tears were flowing.Powerful
moment,well done writers!
Jeremy~I'll
kinda miss him but his purpose on this show has been nil since the
hunter track concluded in season 4.I loved elena & jer's bonding
moments- i kinda liked elena in those
moments, that's a win right there! The end twist is very controversial
like katherine's exit but i never bought into the idea of him being
happy in a art school. We never saw him do anything remotely related to
art since season 1,so him being a vampire hunter makes his arc more
logical & rational.I didn't like that alaric was actively
encouraging his decision but as he said he is an adult and he respected
his decision.Alaric is in for deep trouble once this secret slips out
and it will inevitably.I hope we get to see him once more when bonnie
finally comes back-i need their goodbye to move on from him completely.
Enzo-sarah-matt~I have no idea where this storyline is heading and it's purpose in this
show in the first place. His revenge plan stopped making sense a long
time ago.I really hope by the end of the season, his storyline leads
to some other interesting arc, otherwise this whole arc is pointless.I
feel really sorry for Michael malarkey. No series regular should be
burdened with this kind of crap storyline TBH!
I didn't even miss kai/bonnie this episode.I liked that stefan let tyler know sheriff's
condition or caroline acknowledging the fact she should've been with her
instead of having cabin romance(or whatever they were trying to
do).Good continuity there writers!
Next week seems very tragic.I can't wait to hear damon's eulogy!
Oh, Damon's eulogy! I'm going to cry again next week, clearly. :)
ReplyDeleteOnly few complaints from this episode-
ReplyDelete1.I expected the flashback scenes in the beginning to be about caroline and liz's moments but this TVD,so the FB had to elena's.That was irritating. Not everything has to be about elena!
2.No caroline-liz moments in the beginning.I get she didn't get to say goodbye to her mom the way she wanted coz that would be way too convenient and life doesn't work that way but we got cheated on some moments we could've seen otherwise between mother and daughter.
3.I didn't relate to damon in a scene at all-He acted all shocked & surprised when liz insinuated that damon might be responsible for elena's parent's crash but was completely casual & cool & apparently joking about all those other random killings. So,if it's someone related to elena, that's crossing a line and otherise,it's open season. This aspect deeply disturbed me.
4.Last but most important-The jeremy twist would've much more believable if he didn't get owned by enzo few moments earlier so easily. Are we supposed to believe he's to be a bad-ass vampire hunter all alone? This ain't supernatural and he is neither sam nor dean. He'll get killed within a week tops by logic.I was more disturbed to see alaric was passively encouraging it.The fact they chose to skip this info from elena,i didn't know which way to take it-Sweet or insulting.
Great episode, great review!
ReplyDeleteThink it was a really powerful episode.
Liz and Damon's final talk was so beautifully written.
People bi*ched a lot about Caro spending the day with Stefan but think it was an intriguing decision. As proved Caroline wants to control everything even Liz disease and the writers not alowing her to take control will shake up her character to her core. Looking forward to see Caroline's new path.
Loved the moment Caroline entered Liz's mind and the dream Liz had.
The Jeremy twist amazing!!!!!
even when jer couldn't do anything to enzo?Sure.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't see that fight resolve. I just read your comment and wanted to comment on it. I found it a bit to much as well but we just so Enzo keeping his leg on Jer's face not how he got out of it. No one helped him.
ReplyDeleteEnzo appeared later in this episode with a single scratch mark on his face/body in the tunnel scene which happened after this confrontation.Jeremy,on the other hand-looked pretty bad.
ReplyDeleteWe can guess the end part of that off-screen fight.
I'm not saying i expected jeremy to beat enzo but this scene altogether was completely unnecessary when moments later he will be going away to hunt the very same thing he's struggling to get out of few hours before. This scene took away the amazingness of the hunter twist!
Jeremy just searched for ice to put on his face and Enzo is a Vamp, even if he had a scratch he would've healed.
ReplyDeleteI agree it took bit of the amazigness. No doubt! But again he going all hunter on Enzo would maybe make Elena suspicious and worry.
Now we can't have elena worry, can we?Everything comes back to freakin' elena. This girl,i tell you!LOL!
ReplyDeleteHahahahha.
ReplyDeleteEverybody loves Elena! ;-) I wished there were more clues to Jer's depature as a hunter but we won't see him soon so I'm fine with what we've got.
Do we know how old Vamp Enzo is?
As proved Caroline wants to control everything even Liz disease and the
ReplyDeletewriters not allowing her to take control will shake up her character to
her core.
Great point. Caroline wanted to manage everything, have some control over the happenings but life almost always has other plans. So, now all her plans have crumbled. I will definitely be interesting to see her how she proceeds.
Her copping mechanisms will be certainly entertaining to watch. I just hope the writers give her enough screen time.
ReplyDeleteFor me that was the worst episode ever. I only enjoyed Damon/Liz scenes. The rest of the plot was really really stupid. Caroline was too busy with herself to say goodbye to her own mother. Stefan kissed Caroline only because he felt sorry for her. Don't tell that he has suddenly romantic feelings for her. I don't buy this at all.
ReplyDeleteFinally Jeremy is gone. Enzo and Matt should leave Mystic Falls too because their storyline doesn't make any sense.
Something tells me,we'll get that answer very soon.I think he was a bit older than stefan but younger than damon when he turned-so somewhere between 20-22(human age).Vampire age-Younger than both the brothers.
ReplyDeleteI don't know but he sure has the mental development of a douchy teenager.
ReplyDeleteSo you hated pretty much every single thing that others enjoyed. Alright then.
ReplyDeleteI watched before work. I was balling my eyes out before work. I did manage to recover. I loved the Damon/Liz scenes the most. Everytime I'm ready to give up on this show the pull out an ep like this.
ReplyDeleteYour review was great btw. I agree with you regarding the Enzo subplot...and the fact that once again Matt is a victim.
Good point about Jeremy's lack of prowess....I don't buy him as a badass hunter and never could! I agree, I don't even believe he'd survive all that long out there with no back up.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just hope Caroline doesn't keep guilting herself about not being there with her mother when she slipped into unconsciousness for the last time. She's obviously not going to make peace with all of this anytime soon (well, the previews don't make it seem that way) but I'd hate to see her feeling guilty for something she couldn't possibly have predicted.
ReplyDeleteWell I can definitely agree on the 'finally Jeremy is gone' sentiment! And yes, Matt has my permission to vacate as well any time now. I'm more lenient towards Enzo but the writers have done their best to make him irrelevant, which I really hope they fix.
ReplyDeleteThank you :) This episode and everything since Liz's illness began has been very tear jerking for me as well. The funeral next week is sure to be a doozy too!
ReplyDeleteIt will likely be a while before I watch that ep. And then *not* before work. :-D
ReplyDeleteBesides damon and elena, caroline is the one character who has always got the most screen-time.I'm sure this time won't be any exception.Just hoping that rule applies for our bonnie too.Poor girl!
ReplyDeleteYeah I get that to create more drama they didn't want Caroline to be by her mom's side when she died because this way it will create more struggle for Caroline and even probably she will question herself and maybe feel guilty and we saw some sparks of that guilty feeling when she came to hospital. But I'm still glad that writers didn't miss one important detail that the last thing she told her mom was "I love you". I really hope that Stefan remembers it and reminds it to Caroline. I think that it would ease her pain a little.
ReplyDeleteI saw a behind the scenes pic from the episode Damon directed, and it seems Bonnie is back and I really hope she is there to stay. Should be fun to see her reintegrate.
ReplyDeleteI saw those pic too.Apparently he also posted a pic wearing a tutu!!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, can't wait to see how the writers do with our bonnie's journey now that jeremy's gone for good.I hope we get to see more bamon scenes,i absolutely loved their moments earlier this season before it was cut short bu damon's return.
Damon was pulled out of prison world way to early. Loved their video from the Bday ep. A lot of mess is coming towards Damon will be interesting to see how he'll cop with it and if Bonnie will be a better support than Elena.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure elena will be thrown off guard to see how close damon and bonnie have become when she returns.I'll enjoy watching elena squirm.
ReplyDeleteElena squirm is always so enjoyable. I still remember how awkward she was when Lexie stopped by in season 1 and she had the hots for S.
ReplyDeleteOh,i remember. The episode was titled 162 Candles-those were some good episodes!Too bad she was killed off that very episode.I was so pissed at damon for pulling that stunt,i was less angry when he snapped jermey's neck!
ReplyDeleteLexie could've been a great addition to the cast in a long run but at that moment they were building up Villain Damon, so she had to die.
ReplyDeleteI always imagined the show ending with a dead Elena? What do you think?
My ideal ending should be something like this-Damon compels elena to forget all the events that happened after the salvatore brothers met with her. Both brothers ride off to a new unknown place in damon's car.Caroline moves to New orleans.Tyler dies.Matt leaves town to be with rebekah to some place their own.Bonnie becomes a coven leader and becomes a kick-ass witch taking control of her own life.Alaric and jo wed and live happily ever after.Jeremy moves in with them.Kai makes amend with his sisters and say goodbye for good.Enzo lets go of all that anger and hatred & moves on with his life.
ReplyDeleteI don't want Caroline to go to Nola, no way. She should do something on her own and move away from all that boydrama. And compelling everything away would be fine if Elena was human, this way no. She should die.
ReplyDeleteI'm okay with the rest.
I said that keeping in mind that elena becomes human next season,i can totally see that happening. If not,she should die.
ReplyDeleteYes. I'm not gonna apologize for that. In my country we say "Ile ludzi tyle opinii". In english it something like that "so many people, so many minds". You can love the episode and I can hate it.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving how u irritated with elena teeehehehehe !!
ReplyDeleteLet me just put it this way. I'm not returning to this site for the first time today, since that episode aired. I was on a VD HIGH! And it took me til today Monday freaking Feb 16th today, to finally come down. lol After watching this episode over and over again. (Ok who we kiddin? I watched my long awaited Steroline scene over and over and over and over again for 3 days straight. EPICALLY SWEET! Although, i did watch the episode as a whole 2 more times. Seriously loved the Damon/Liz, and Caroline/Liz scenes. So beautifully devastating). And coming up with knew theories, i am really excited for the rest of the season. But i'm really looking forward to this Thursday's episode. I'm really looking forward to hearing Damon's eulogy, and even though i can't STAND seeing Caroline in pain, i need to see how she is. And i really want to add that Candice has been knocking it out of the park this season with every emotional scene (or any other scene) she's been given. She sells it every time and this past episode after she had the dream with her mom, her line, "She's Gone!" Omg, those TWO WORDS...made me cry so hard. I didn't shed a tear before that (even though i was very sad) but the way she delivered it...i just broke down. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of her struggle to see if she will go over the brink or not. I may bethe minority in this still, idk, but i still think it would be fun to see her dark. However, now i'm a little conflicted about it. lol
ReplyDeleteok so i hate to be the bearer of bad news. shannon... i may have some potentially devastating news about steroline... i just saw the australian promo (don't ask how its a long long story)... and in the promo they show steroline the wordings are - is true love immortal ? and then they cut to caroline telling elena that she kissed stefan and elena turning around looking SHOCKED. then they cut to stefan talking to damon and damon saying "not all love is true love man, she's not the one". and stefan looking like a complete moron. not saying anything just staring at him all confused.
ReplyDeletei donno what to do... i think i just had a stroke !
http://meghavv.tumblr.com
ReplyDeleteu can see it here.
so what does that mean?
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking stefan is confused. remember in s5 he told elena - u can either be friends with someone or you can be in love with them?? i think stefan went to damon for advise.. which pisses me off on so many levels. i mean if your not sure u shunt hv kissed her at all.. aarrgghhh.... i guess this is the JP steroline OBSTACLE ?
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed! It was a beautifully done episode in many ways.
ReplyDeleteOk, when you start a sentence with "I hate to be the bearer of bad news"....that makes me think, well no you don't, b/c if you did, you wouldn't bring it up at all. JS. (that's how i see it. But don't take that personally).
ReplyDeleteTwo: I didn't read the rest of your comment after you said you watched the Aussie Promo. (Nor will i be reading w/e link you posted) Why? well i'll tell you. I don't like the foreign promos, i don't watch them they're too spoilery. As most know on this site, i stay in the dark as much as possible with this show. I like to be surprised during an episode, and know little as possible. (Especially when it comes to my ships).
Three: I don't expect anything "epic" from Steroline right now anyway. I mean it's Liz's funeral. They can table their feelings, and their "after talk" til another time in the upcoming episodes. Actually, i'd prefer it. They had their moment, that could hold me over for awhile. I'm much more interested in Caroline's struggle, and to see how Stefan (and everyone else) handles her "spiral".
Thank You. It sure was. = )
ReplyDeleteDamnit, I'm expecting some epic-icity! If you're taking the show from mayhem to angst, at least deliver on the angst!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you survived your Stero attack though! We were worried ;)
We do? I thought we mostly said "up yours, ahole!". In Polish, that is.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I hated the episode too. Teasing bastards.
It wouldn't be TVD without dragging out the romance and creating obstacles. Seems pretty straightforward at this point in time for me, though ofc who knows what the evil writers have in mind.
ReplyDeleteLOL. I really can wait. This still needs to be taken slowly. It'll all come together in good time. I have hopes. = )
ReplyDeleteHahaha, thank you. It was really close there for a minute. ; )
