The Originals - Sanctuary - Review

7 Feb 2015

I found this episode to be a lot better than last week’s. Elijah mostly absent this week, but I guess they all need to sleep sometime. Rebekah met her older sister, who broke her out of the asylum/prison. Klaus and Hayley bickered about whether or not to trust Jackson. After some neck-snapping and fighting, Klaus seemingly gave in. Finn held the vampires hostage, while interrogating Marcel. Davina, Kol and Aiden managed to rescue a very hungry Josh, but Kol got cursed in the process. By the end of the episode, Finn puts the pieces together and realized that Hope is still alive.

Best character: This episode was our first real introduction to Freya and I was not disappointed. She seems to be even more powerful than Esther was. So far she seems to be on Rebekah’s, and therefore Klaus’ and Elijah’s, side. But I’m still worried about her reunion with Finn. He’s the only one who’s had a relationship with her before. I think there will definitely be a strong reaction on his end, good or bad.
Best argument: I feel like both Klaus and Hayley had strong points. If you think about things from Klaus’ point of view, of course he’s against the wedding. The secret of Hope is the most important thing to him right now. If this knowledge were to fall in the wrong hands (which in the end, it did anyway) it would put his daughter’s life in danger. He doesn’t trust Jackson (frankly, neither do I), so it is completely understandable that he would not want to share this secret with him. Hayley however does seem to trust Jackson. He’s protected her and seems to always put her needs before his own. The danger to Hope has always come from Klaus’ relatives. Hope’s life is in danger because she’s Klaus’ daughter. And there’s nothing she can do about that. As a mother it must be unbelievably frustrating to not be able to protect your own child. So she’s doing the only thing she can do. Through this wedding ceremony, she will gain an army that can protect Hope. Personally I don’t think a werewolf army will be able to do much against Finn, let alone Dahlia who will undoubtedly pop up sometime in the near future. But it’s better than doing nothing. She believes Jackson will keep the secret about Hope safe. They are both Hope’s parents, meaning they both have a say in this decision. In the end it came down to the fact that Klaus has to trust that Hayley is right about Jackson. That in its own is a huge deal for him. Klaus rarely even confides in the people he does trust (just look how long it took him to tell Cami). Aside from the fact that he’s planning on killing Jackson after the wedding, he’s still willing to let him walk around with the secret until then. Klaus tells Jackson that if he betrays Hayley’s trust he’ll kill him, but I’m pretty sure Hayley would beat him to the punch.

Least favorite character: I actually felt bad for Cassie before the events of this episode. Rebekah was trying to help her but she just stabbed her in the back, knowing what the consequences would be. I don’t even feel a little bit bad about what Freya did to her.

Most villainous character: So Finn figured out that Hope is still alive, a lot faster than I expected him to. I guess this makes the argument between Klaus and Hayley kind of pointless. I know Finn hates his siblings but would he really kill an innocent child? Seems a little extreme, even for him. My guess is he’ll try to use her to hurt Klaus, kind of a hostage situation. I am surprised that Dahlia hasn’t showed up yet. Wasn’t she supposed to rise when the first child of a generation is born? Hope’s almost a year old by now.

Best reunion: Klaus being reunited with Rebekah was probably my favorite scene this week. Look at his smile. These two have come so far. The new Rebekah is doing a pretty good job so far (honestly thought I’d hate her). I’m sure that now that she’s back, her going back into her old body will come up. But they’ll probably drag it out until the end of the season (if Claire wants to come back that is).
A missed opportunity: Kol seems to be at the end of his days. Now I’m sure that he will find a way out of it but this would have been a great opportunity to bring Nate back as Kol. When Finn first started explaining the curse, that was the first thing that came to mind. Until he mentioned that Kol won’t be able to body jump. Alas, it seems we won’t be getting Nate back yet after all.

Best quotes: Rebekah: “I didn’t kill her. But to be fair, I won’t miss the ugly cow.”
Klaus: “I do trust you. More than you know. I just don’t trust Jackson.”
Freya: “Tell our brothers I’ll be coming to see them soon. And I expect nothing less than their best behavior.”

So that’s it for this week. Check in again for a new review next week and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.

My proportions seem to be a bit off this week. I've seen that a lot of people think that Kol will die, what do you guys think?

  2. Klaus-He's really starting to piss me off!
Elijah-We need to see more of him,one scene isn't enough.where went the internal struggle storyline, writers?
Hayley-I kinda like her with jackson at present although i'm pretty sure that marriage won't happen when the time finally comes.
Caleb-Needs to stay but unfortunately that won't happen.
Vincent-I really like yusuf's performance but the character has overstayed his welcome. He needs to get killed off in the season finale.
Rebekah-Freya-The best aspect of this otherwise average episode. The entire asylum arc was surprisingly well written, shot and edited. The new girl playing rebekah is pretty good, she can stay.Freya was awesome,i loved how she killed cassie.10 points for that alone. Can't wait for her to meet with her brothers-especially vincent and klaus.
Cami & Davina-Needs better storyline ASAP.
Marcel-Same goes for him too although he's really growing on me this season.
We need to see more mikael and dahlia here in NOLA as soon as possible.

  3. Klaus-If he dies, the entire show falls on it's face without him and all of our mystic falls gang bites the dust.
Elijah-Killing him would be like committing suicide. He made what originals are today. The writers won't dare touch him.
Hayley-She's a guest star and already in some random girl's body,so no point in killing her off either.Plus freya just got here. They'll definitely tap into that sisterly bond thing.
Vincent-Yusuf was just made series regular and his storyline directly ties with dahlia-freya storyline which will become quite prominent moving forward. So,at best-he'll get killed off in the season finale, definitely not before that.
That leaves us with Freya and Caleb/fake kol. Now,freya cannot die this soon,it's very obvious.
Only option left is kol.He WILL die.

  4. This is probably one of the best episodes this season so far. If they stay at this pace the rest of the seasob could be very good. And they got renewed I believe so they can fix mistakes for next season. Interested to see how they end the season, it could be predictable and they could surprise us.

  5. I miss Elijah he is my favorite and they are not going to kill Klaus, Elijah or Haley off. I am missing cami and Klaus and Elijah and Haley and I don't like this whole wedding and not a fan of Jackson or Haley together

  6. I thought this was a pretty good episode I just wish there was more of Daniel Gillies/ Elijah I miss him he is one of my favorites. I still don't trust Jackson and this whole wedding can be over it bores me, and yes I am not a fan of Jackson and Haley together. I liked Rebekkah and Klaus reuniting and Freya I don't know she scares me. I like Caleb and get rid of Vincent. I like the friendship of Klaus and Haley but I don't think that Klaus trust anyone and he is up to something. I did like the fight between Jackson and Klaus and its funny that Jackson needed a woman to fight for him. I think the writers are ruining my couples

  7. I'm sure Finn would try an kill Hope and fail likely, but only as he believed all the information is mother gave and he's a mikaelson after all. From his perspective, I'm sure he's still afraid of his aunt, and he sees Hope as a way to survive I'd guess. But his response to his mother after Klaus cited Hope as the reason Klaus hated here is a good bet Hope being innocent won't mean anything to him.

  8. I'm suspicious about Freya. On a few sites people have already been claiming it is actually Dahlia pretending or possessing Freya. Personally I hope that she is pretending and getting their trust only to go after Hope later in the season. It would establish her as someone smarter than the Originals, and make a great twist.

Haley was stronger in this episode than any other in the season imo. It really established her as finally being her own character and a badass. New Rebekah is just amazing, the new actress nailed absolutely everything about her personality it is clear she put a lot of work into researching the character and getting her mannerisms correct.

I really hope that Freya bonds with Kol and hopefully fixes the curse. It seems to simple a death for a original to just die from a random curse. Kol really struck me this season because they explained the reasons behind why he acts out (attention and feeling unloved). I think his story would benefit greatly by exploring his attachment to Davina who accepts him as well as Freya in an older-sister kind of way. They seemed to start this in tvd with Rebekha but it fell through and they reversed it in originals. Unfortunately, it looks like they are more interested in setting up becky and Freya (who will possibly teach Rebekah magic) which will once again leave Kol without that family bond he really wants.

  9. Klaus doesn't trust anybody, he trusts that he knows what they will do and how they will react. He trusts in their nature so to speak to make them predictable. Most of the time he's right, but it can also be a problem for him, because his base instinct is to believe that people are unable to change. And when people change (proving him wrong), they become unpredictable.

His argument with Haley and joke of a "fight" with Jackson (no relation) wasn't about arguing a point it was about manipulating Haley's nature (motherly instinct) to get her to take responsibility for the pack and bond with Jackson, and more importantly to believe she was making this choice herself.

No, Klaus doesn't trust Jackson, but he's not worried about him either. Who better to keep Jackson in line then the woman who fought to protect him. But he wants that pack and he knows he's won't easily get it by force. Acting like he was opposed to the wedding puts him in a place of power without the suspicion of the wolves or vamps.

Klaus always plays the long game.

  10. the creators were talking about vincent going too far that every character on the show are going to agree that he has to go so he probably WOULD go as far as to kill a baby

  11. Elijah is my favorite and they are not going to kill Daniel Gillies he is one of the main actors and he started this show along with Joseph Morgan

  12. I cant stand vincent and Freya she is a little loopy. Cant stand this whole storyline about this stupid wedding cant stand Jackson. A lot of people feel sorry for him. I dont he is a wuss he needs a woman to protect him. I miss Elijah and Haley I dont understand how anyone could pick him over Elijah. Someone had said on after buzz that there will be a triple love triangle between Elijah, Haley, Klaus and Jackson that is the worst ideal. Cami and Klaus, Elijah and Haley and Jackson can find someone else or go away

  13. Love Elijah he is my favorite

  14. A lot of Kaley fans said that Klaus trusts Haley and that they will be together. I hope not mainly because I am on the opposite ship. But I do agree Klaus does not trust anyone and not Haley. I dont know I think he trusts Cami more than Haley. And Klaus has a plan he always does. I kind of miss the olf Klaus and I miss Elijah. I dont trust Jackson and I dont like him

  15. I do think Klaus probably stopped trusting people because he's been betrayed an screwed over so many times. He can't trust his own family members (looks at his history with Mikael & Esther, Elijah was trying to kill him when we met Elijah in Season 2 of TVD, Rebekah tried to have Klaus killed in 1919 - but as far as we know Klaus has never tried to actually kill a sibling, he puts them in time-out (with a dagger) but was always able to wake them up/bring them back when he was ready).

Klaus will never full trust anyone ever again. I think that at one point in his life he did, but after being betrayed enough times he believes everyone will betray him at some point (and it's not just paranoia - people are betraying him left and right be it Marcel, Genevieve or whoever).
