The Originals - Sanctuary - Review

I found this episode to be a lot better than last week’s. Elijah mostly absent this week, but I guess they all need to sleep sometime. Rebekah met her older sister, who broke her out of the asylum/prison. Klaus and Hayley bickered about whether or not to trust Jackson. After some neck-snapping and fighting, Klaus seemingly gave in. Finn held the vampires hostage, while interrogating Marcel. Davina, Kol and Aiden managed to rescue a very hungry Josh, but Kol got cursed in the process. By the end of the episode, Finn puts the pieces together and realized that Hope is still alive.

Best character: This episode was our first real introduction to Freya and I was not disappointed. She seems to be even more powerful than Esther was. So far she seems to be on Rebekah’s, and therefore Klaus’ and Elijah’s, side. But I’m still worried about her reunion with Finn. He’s the only one who’s had a relationship with her before. I think there will definitely be a strong reaction on his end, good or bad.

Best argument: I feel like both Klaus and Hayley had strong points. If you think about things from Klaus’ point of view, of course he’s against the wedding. The secret of Hope is the most important thing to him right now. If this knowledge were to fall in the wrong hands (which in the end, it did anyway) it would put his daughter’s life in danger. He doesn’t trust Jackson (frankly, neither do I), so it is completely understandable that he would not want to share this secret with him. Hayley however does seem to trust Jackson. He’s protected her and seems to always put her needs before his own. The danger to Hope has always come from Klaus’ relatives. Hope’s life is in danger because she’s Klaus’ daughter. And there’s nothing she can do about that. As a mother it must be unbelievably frustrating to not be able to protect your own child. So she’s doing the only thing she can do. Through this wedding ceremony, she will gain an army that can protect Hope. Personally I don’t think a werewolf army will be able to do much against Finn, let alone Dahlia who will undoubtedly pop up sometime in the near future. But it’s better than doing nothing. She believes Jackson will keep the secret about Hope safe. They are both Hope’s parents, meaning they both have a say in this decision. In the end it came down to the fact that Klaus has to trust that Hayley is right about Jackson. That in its own is a huge deal for him. Klaus rarely even confides in the people he does trust (just look how long it took him to tell Cami). Aside from the fact that he’s planning on killing Jackson after the wedding, he’s still willing to let him walk around with the secret until then. Klaus tells Jackson that if he betrays Hayley’s trust he’ll kill him, but I’m pretty sure Hayley would beat him to the punch.

Least favorite character: I actually felt bad for Cassie before the events of this episode. Rebekah was trying to help her but she just stabbed her in the back, knowing what the consequences would be. I don’t even feel a little bit bad about what Freya did to her.

Most villainous character: So Finn figured out that Hope is still alive, a lot faster than I expected him to. I guess this makes the argument between Klaus and Hayley kind of pointless. I know Finn hates his siblings but would he really kill an innocent child? Seems a little extreme, even for him. My guess is he’ll try to use her to hurt Klaus, kind of a hostage situation. I am surprised that Dahlia hasn’t showed up yet. Wasn’t she supposed to rise when the first child of a generation is born? Hope’s almost a year old by now.

Best reunion: Klaus being reunited with Rebekah was probably my favorite scene this week. Look at his smile. These two have come so far. The new Rebekah is doing a pretty good job so far (honestly thought I’d hate her). I’m sure that now that she’s back, her going back into her old body will come up. But they’ll probably drag it out until the end of the season (if Claire wants to come back that is).
A missed opportunity: Kol seems to be at the end of his days. Now I’m sure that he will find a way out of it but this would have been a great opportunity to bring Nate back as Kol. When Finn first started explaining the curse, that was the first thing that came to mind. Until he mentioned that Kol won’t be able to body jump. Alas, it seems we won’t be getting Nate back yet after all.

Best quotes: Rebekah: “I didn’t kill her. But to be fair, I won’t miss the ugly cow.”
Klaus: “I do trust you. More than you know. I just don’t trust Jackson.”
Freya: “Tell our brothers I’ll be coming to see them soon. And I expect nothing less than their best behavior.”

So that’s it for this week. Check in again for a new review next week and let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
