The Musketeers - Through a Glass Darkly - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers
Feb 20, 2015
Reviews SS The MusketeersThis season is starting to remind me of another of my favourite shows, Doctor Who, with its ability to change its theme and tone so successfully week by week. The last episode was the Wild West, this time we have steampunk mayhem with a side order of Shakespearean tragedy and romance thrown in for good measure. Renowned astronomer Marmion has transformed a room in a derelict fort into a Galileo inspired auditorium, to which he invites the royals and other dignitaries to view the impending solar eclipse.
All is not as it appears though, like the eclipse itself the thrill and wonder that the sanctuary provides is all too fleeting. The guests soon discover that the whole charade has been a cover up for something far more sinister. With the Red Guards efficiently dispatched before the opening credits, and the Musketeers either shackled or defenestrated shortly afterwards, the situation escalates rapidly. The reason for all the dramatics is however relatively simple, a game is about to be played. Louis may not know it but he and Marmion are connected in a way that he could never imagine, fate has played a role in their lives before and now it’s time to decide what the choices are.
The main plot may be a tad predictable and not particularly innovative, though I can’t fault any of the performances, especially when it comes to Gage, Pasqualino, Kari and the guest stars, Leo Gregory and Nathan Wright. The ‘game’ they are involved in builds effectually through the hour, with d’Artagnan once again attempting to help Louis through their capture, as he did in An Ordinary Man, but this time the stakes are much higher. Plus, Constagnan fans will no doubt be looking forward to the significant momentum forward that the couple go through during the course of the episode. They have each other’s back at all times, work very effectively as a team and share a few heartfelt thoughts.
With the characters split up for the majority of the episode it’s obviously a very different tone to last week’s where we saw a strong sense of comradery return between the leads themselves. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as they are separated into groups that shift the individual plots along or give us some insight into their motivations thus far. Porthos and Rochefort are probably the most unusual pairing. Yet the down to earth, plain speaking Musketeer manages to pry a surprising confession out of him with very little effort, even if he doesn’t understand its full meaning.
This week's hangman has been solved, awesome teamwork! Your extra Trailer Teasers have been added below, I won't be revealing who says what as you will be seeing it soon for yourself. Enjoy the episode, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on it in the poll afterwards :)
The picture clues have been solved - Sherlock Holmes & Reichenbach Falls = A character doesn't die as expected after taking a fall
The comradery between the Musketeers isn’t completely missing from the episode. Treville and Athos share a carafe of wine and contemplate the future together as they watch the eclipse. There is also some brief good natured banter when Aramis is discovered to be alive, and Athos even manages to sneak a warning in about spending time with the queen right under everyone’s noses.

“Aramis wears a jewelled crucifix, bring it to me” - Rochefort to Marguerite or one of his men.
These are my guesses so far. Great preview, Sandi, as always. This is the episode I am most looking forward to - Friday can't come soon enough! I am glad to hear that many storylines will be moving forward throughout the episode and I am very intrigued by the rather unconventional pairing of Porthos and Rochefort. I'm sure this will be the best episode yet! :)
“Have compassion, let the baby and the women go” Aramis to Marmion
ReplyDelete“Aramis? Aramis is dead. The fall” Anne to Marguerite or Marguerite to Anne
“That one can stay, the game must be witnessed” Marmion to Constance
“I should have taken that position on the king’s council when he offered it” Captain Trevaille (I think this is the spelling) to Athos
“Stay here, you’ll be safe” Aramis to Anne and Marguerite
These are my guesses, thanks for the preview.
Thanks Sandi! Brilliant distraction from my early morning pre-flight insomnia.😄 Guesses:
ReplyDeleteTeaser: "Aramis wears a jewelled Crucifix. Bring it to me." - Rochefort to Marguerite
“Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute” Porthos to Rochefort or Rochefort to Porthos
ReplyDelete“Have compassion, let the baby and the women go” Aramis to the Captors
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” Marmion to Louis
“You and this, woman, did you two get together when you got out?” Anne to Aramis???
“Stay here, you’ll be safe”Aramis to Anne & Marguerite
This would be my guesses
"Aramis wears a bejewelled crucifix. Bring it to me."
ReplyDeleteWell NOW I'm looking forward to episode 7... ;)
Thanks for the review Sandi...
ReplyDeleteI get the impression - especially with the Radio Times review - that whilst the episode is very good in places, it's a bit OTT at times or perhaps haphazard?
The pairing of Rochefort and Porthos was a bit of a surprise and I wonder if Rochefort will soften up just a touch towards the Musketeers as a result of this episode? Of course it can't last because he's becoming an even nastier piece of work than Milady, so is that softening pretend, just to get Porthos to trust him and help save his neck?
Whilst Athos and Milady will have their usual 'moments' I hope there's no obvious sign that Athos is considering getting closer to her? At some point during S2, I'd like to think Athos has the ability to truely move on, even if there's more to come as we head towards the final.
Good to hear that d'Artagnan and Louis are spending quality time together again, even if yet again it's in a life or death situation. I did fear their relationship being more or less abandoned after episode 2 once Louis and Milady had been put together but hopefully this is another example of the writers intentionally having d'Art in the King's sphere.
That's got to be Rochefort, I hope so.
ReplyDelete“Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute” Marmion to Louis or Louis to Marmion
ReplyDelete“You’re the bravest woman I’ve ever known” d'Artagnan to Constance
“Have compassion, let the baby and the women go” Aramis to Marmion
“Stay here, you’ll be safe” Aramis to Anne
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences”
“That was either a wounded bull or Porthos” Athos or Treville
“Aramis? Aramis is dead. The fall” Porthos to someone
“I should have taken that position on the king’s council when he offered it” Treville to Athos
“You and this, woman, did you two get together when you got out?” Porthos to Rochefort
“That one can stay, the game must be witness" Marmion about Constance
ME TOO!
ReplyDeleteOMG, now it begins. Rochefort is about to find things out in the coming episode, so in episode seven i'm expecting Aramis to start notice Rochefort's creepy attitude towards him or the Queen.
The only question i have now is about Aramis and Marguerite. Since is pretty clear that Aramis and the Queen are involved again, what about Marguerite? Has he dumped her? Or he simply has stop seeing her without a word? If he keep seeing her i will be royally pissed off.
"Porthos and Rochefort are probably the most unusual pairing. Yet the
ReplyDeletedown to earth, plain speaking Musketeer manages to pry a surprising
confession out of him with very little effort, even if he doesn’t
understand its full meaning."
That's typical.
The one who doesn't know about things is the one who find out other things, strictly connected to the big thing currently going on.
Remember the first episode, when the Queen explain her and Rochefort being old friends and then the camera moves on Porthos face? He grimace a little.
And since now Porthos is the smartest one and the one who actually talk with the others, so... Go Porthos! You are all of us!
if guess is right and Rochefort asking Marguerite about crucifix, that means aramis still seeing Marguerite.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Rochefort will start putting things together this episode. I doubt the Queen OR Aramis will be able to completely hide their involvement once everyone's life is in danger. Plus, judging from that one promo pic, Marguerite sees them interacting, so she's probably reporting back to Rochefort.
ReplyDeleteAnd judging from ep 4, it didn't exactly seem like Aramis was dumping Marguerite, did it? Which is gonna make for quite an awkward moment once a) Marguerite realizes there's something going on between him and the Queen and b) the Queen realizes there's something going on between him and Marguerite (and we know the Queen is the jealous type). Pretty sure both women are going to feel quite betrayed. No way this ends well for Aramis...
But Aramis and the Queen kiss in the tent happens after the scene with Aramis and Marguerite, so... why still being in a relationship (too much of a big word) with Marguerite? In this episode we can see Aramis carryng the baby, so he and the Queen will menage not only to see aechother but keep him near the baby with tipycal job excuses... a musketeer guarding the Dauphine is pretty normal.
ReplyDeleteUnless Aramis wants to keep Marguerite close because if someone start questioning his persistent proximity to the baby he will expose Marguerite as his lover and not the Queen... sh*t.
"Queen realizes there's something going on between him and Marguerite"
God, Anne is one of the character that less deserve something like that.
I fear that momento like hell.
I don't know whether to be excited or not.
ReplyDeleteD'Artagnan with the King AGAIN.
Aramis with the Queen and the baby AGAIN.
Athos having issues with Milady AGAIN.
Porthos out of the loop AGAIN.
Move on show! Truely unique pairings at the point would have been Porthos/Queen, Athos/King, Aramis/Milady and d'Artagnan/Rochefort.
Porthos/Rochefort will have to suffice, I suppose.
Anyway guesses, 'Have compassion let the baby...' Treville? Or even Rochefort? (Hope its not Aramis. Too obvs)
I really hope 'that was either a wounded bull or Porthos' is Athos because I can picture Tom saying that.
And am taking a punt with no letters cos I am feeling reckless, lol, 'The impending eclipse...'/The adventure involves...'
You and me both. :( I'm pretty sure that's gonna spell the end of those two (which, I know, a lot of people are waiting for because it can't go anywhere anyway, but I still don't want that ship to go down :()
ReplyDeleteAnd to Aramis still seeing Marguerite: well, he's a guy. He's not exactly getting a lot of....satisfaction from the Queen. Not that I condone him stringing two women along, but Marguerite is a) still his way to the baby (it's not like the Queen is ever going to invite him around to the royal toddler group) and b) his way to getting some. I mean, he can be a bit shallow at times...
Aramis didn't lie and said he loved Marguerite though. He made no bones about it being just a fling to him. Don't get me wrong, he's far from in the right but it is pretty much the only way he way ever going to see more of that baby. I swear though, the Queen should realise Aramis was never going to stay away. She even knows that he lost a baby once before... The whole thing is rather heartbreaking and messed up. If you ask me Athos should be more of a support or presence in this- why WHY when they were told the baby was ill the other week would he walk off and not check Aramis was following? If this whole damn baby plot makes Aramis the bad guy then I will be furious. It takes two to tango and he's come off worse of all...
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :) Both correct!
ReplyDeletedon't forget Constance know about aramis and anne,so maybe she know about what happening between aramis and Marguerite.
ReplyDelete"I know, a lot of people are waiting for because it can't go anywhere anyway, but I still don't want that ship to go down"
ReplyDeleteSAME HERE.
I hope that if this happen Aramis will try to conquer the Queen again, in a more honest way, since we always have seen her make the first move.
"his way to getting some. I mean, he can be a bit shallow at times..."
If this is the case... he deserve the hardest punch of the world.
The coming episodes really worry me a lot... and i was so innocently hoping for a Annamis hot scene. Ah. :(
"If you ask me Athos should be more of a support or presence in this"
ReplyDeleteAgree. Though this is typical for his character,... Porthos and D'Artagnan would have been more present and more in check.
The pairing of d'Artagnan with Louis might be important to his character's future development. During S1, Louis actually had respect for Captain Treville and if d'Artagnan is destined to become a Captain himself one day, it's an important thing that the King likes and trusts d'Artagnan.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit disappointed at the lack of d'Artagnan / Rochefort interaction so far because I've got a feeling the writers aren't going to follow tradition when it comes to d'Artagnan being responsible for Rochefort's death, unless that lack of interaction changes over the next few episodes.
Cheers psychee :) I don't think it's as good as the last two, but it's a pretty good one imo, it definitely gets things moving along nicely. You have 5 quotes completely correct, nice one. I'll update them tonight when I get home and add the second letter.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :) You have three correct.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, hope your flight wasn't delayed!
ReplyDeleteYou have four correct :)
You have one correct :)
ReplyDelete"His way of getting some. I mean, he can be a bit shallow at times..."
ReplyDeleteOuch. Lol. Personally I think this is all baby related which doesn't make it right. I'm by no means impressed that he is essentially using her. Also we haven't actually seen evidence that he goes after every woman he meets. The lothario thing seems much exaggerated in my opinion. Adele, one fling with a widow, the queen and now Marguerite... I mean d'Art has slept with two and snogged one. And two of his are married!
Hmm, I don't think Marguerite and Aramis have been much of a secret, despite what Marguerite naively thinks of the situation. A lot of people in the palace seem to be aware of it at least, and Anne doesn't seem to be particularly surprised by the fact in this episode really. He's not seeing Anne, although they are obviously very concerned for each other in this dangerous situation.
ReplyDeleteOkay, i was expecting the Queen cracking down at the news... but hey, she seems a women of the world. I'm surprised. Really surprised. So the only one who will get hurt is Marguerite, after all... okay, at this point m really close to stop feeling some sorte of pity for her. You can't be as oblivious as Athos, women.
ReplyDelete"He's not seeing Anne"
T______T
I was expecting them to break up at the end of the season, now i'm expecting a make up... a girl can dream.
The Queen thought Ninon was his lover, doesn't surprise me that she isn't shocked by his fling with Marguerite. Also she must realise its baby related.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the Queen doesn't get with Rochefort, I'm happy. A man who sends ears as gifts should be avoided at all costs. Lol
aramis still seeing Marguerite or not. Will we have anne and aramis scene ?
ReplyDeletethanks again for the preview Sandi!
ReplyDeleteit's gonna be an epic episode with all the charaters .
“Have compassion, let the baby and the women go” - I think its more Aramis to tell something like that .
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” - Marmiton ?! to Louis
About marmiton is it right that he has some connection with king ?! Not that he is only his astrologist , but more deep than that.
PS : He seems a little weirdo (not more than Rocheford) with his coins and his cult.
“That one can stay, the game must be witnessed” - Marmiton to the king and his royal court (maybe)
“I should have taken that position on the king’s council when he offered it” - Treville to athos ?. But sure it's Treville who's talking.
About Constagnan it's good and sweet to have some interaction between them and not like it was in episode 1 & 4. Some love in the air.
Poor Anne in the seek peek, she shouldn't be treat like that. Playing some part with Milady. From the king it's not really fair this time. King louis has grow up from season 1 to season 2.
am to disappointed about annamis.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. Yeah, I'd agree with that, it's not an original story, but it looks scrumptious and is performed well. I think it's probably more of a fan service episode than a great episode, if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteLol, no softening up of Rochefort, he stays as crazy and deluded as ever. There's no change in direction in his storyline really, which is where I'm imagining most of the complaints will come from. I imagine he will just keep getting even more powerful until his comeuppance in the finale.
All three ships - Milady/Athos, Constance/d'Artagnan & Anne/Aramis - will have some great moments in this episode to celebrate, in their own unique way. As I've said in the opening paragraph, it does have a Shakespearean romance feel to it. Although, as before in the show, some couples 'moments' are greater than others.
You have six correct.
ReplyDeleteSome choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” I would say Milady to Athos or Athos to Milady!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThey would be unique pairings and would work brilliantly in a stand alone episode I think. But I'm not sure that the arcs would be as successfully moved on if the relevant characters couldn't interact with each other in a meaningful way unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteYou have one correct :)
Adrian said before the season started that Rochefort was basically only a name from the book, he's not really based on the character much at all.
ReplyDeleteTalking of romance, I wonder if we'll EVER see Louis and Anne's marriage start to improve? They'll probably never have the passionate love that Athos / Milady and d'Artagnan / Constance have but more respect from Louis towards his wife would be a good start..
ReplyDeleteAn intriguing episode and great preview Sandi, can`t wait for Friday and whoop de doo, no break this week! Two consecutive episodes at last!!
ReplyDeleteIt didnt in real life, they just about tolerated each other as history tells us! The next King of France took a long time to be conceived!
ReplyDeleteNot sure that D'artagnan and constance do have a passionate love the way the other two do, theirs is still young love, not the intense/tumultuous love born from past experience.
Milady to Athos or possibly Treville to Athos.
ReplyDeleteMy guesses:
ReplyDelete“You’re the bravest woman I’ve ever known” - D'Artagnan to Constance
“Have compassion, let the baby and the women go” - Aramis to Marmion
“Stay here, you’ll be safe” - Aramis to Anne
“That was either a wounded bull or Porthos” - Athos to Milady
“I should have taken that position on the king’s council when he offered it” -Treville to the Musketeers
Does Rochefort or the King find out about Mr and Mrs Athos?
ReplyDeleteLOL! True. It's probably because he's always been depicted as a womanizer in every adaptation, so that's just the picture you have of him. But alright, he's not that bad. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the preview Sandi! I am feeling a bit under the weather with a nasty cold virus, so this has made my day! I'm so looking forward to all the developments in this episode. Love the quote about the wounded bull or Porthos! ;)
ReplyDeletePoor Anne she don't have love in her life. her husband have lover, aramis with Marguerite. She is alone
ReplyDeleteYou might be right about Louis and Anne if their real-life counterparts never really came to love one another.
ReplyDeleteD'artagnan's love for Constance has come across as passionate - his over-emotional argument with Constance in episode 1 put that across quite well, however immature it was - but I don't think Constance has shown the same level of feeling just yet, at least not since her naughty daydream in the opening episode.
Porthos was the womaniser in Man in the Iron Mask if I remember correctly!? Bit weird.
ReplyDeleteMy first experience of the Musketeers was Albert the 5th Musketeers. Aramis was always quoting romantic poetry then. Lol . Oh and Porthos often rode his horse backwards and Milady was a cat! Good times.
Anyway, you are normally a wizz with the hangman...any thoughts?
Thanks for that Sandi
ReplyDeleteI mean as cute as Aramis and the Queen are
SHE is the QUEEN
I have a feeling this will be Constance and d'Artangnan's time to shine.😊
ReplyDeleteI felt more heat from them in season 1 ......but I blame it in the fact that they really are not interacting with each other that much this season.
ReplyDeleteTo tell the truth , I miss season 1 Constance and D'art
That's true, i like see her connecting things with this cool attitude!
ReplyDeleteI know, but at least Anne knows what Aramis is doing. That's a relief for me. I was assuming that Rochefort, at some point, would have spilled the bean in the most hurtful way possible... so, that front is covered. Even if this means that Marguerite is played by both Aramis and the Queen.
ReplyDeleteSecond sentence could start with 'Treville and Athos'?
ReplyDeleteThe 5th word of the first sentence could be musketeers, although other words also fit.
ReplyDeleteGood one too!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteAw that's horrible Helen. Feel better soon. :)
ReplyDeleteI have them drinking wine at the moment - lol! Think I need some more letters!
ReplyDeleteTreville/and/Athos/drink/a/carafe/of/wine/and/...
That's wrong any way as there isn't a 'k' in that 4th word! Oh well, think I'll have to just patiently wait for some more letters!
ReplyDeleteThanks Scoobie :)
ReplyDelete“Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute”
ReplyDelete- going out on a limb with this one to say Rochefort to Marguerite
“You’re the bravest woman I’ve ever known” - as others have guessed, d'Artagnan to Constance
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” - Marmion
“That was either a wounded bull or Porthos” - Athos to Treville
“Aramis? Aramis is dead. The fall” - Marguerite to the queen
“I should have taken that position on the king’s council when he offered it” - Treville to Athos
“You and this, woman, did you two get together when you got out?” - Porthos to Rochefort
“That one can stay, the game must be witnessed” - Marmion to Constance
“Aramis wears a jewelled crucifix, bring it to me” - Rochefort to Marguerite
If we get completely stuck we could just make up our own. :)
ReplyDeleteYay, four! I'll settle for that. Back home to visit the family. What is it about early morning flights. I have no problem with flying (God knows I do it often enough alas) but I can never get a good night's sleep before one. Bed early for me tonight.
ReplyDeleteMe too. That scene outside the Garrison was so reminiscent of the sparky relationship they had back then. Hopefully the next few episodes will see that spark not only return but grow.
ReplyDeleteKeeping everything crossed that you're right athena. :)
ReplyDeleteBrilliant guess on:
ReplyDelete“You and this, woman, did you two get together when you got out?” Porthos to Rochefort That makes absolute sense, particularly given Sandi's teaser that Porthos ends up eliciting an unexpectedly frank admission from Rochefort. The significance of which is unfortunately lost on him.
I think the confession that Porthos will get from Rochefort is that Rochefort is in love with Anne and wants to be with her.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd feel more pity for Marguerite if I liked her as a character, but so far she's been depicted as a lazy and a bit self-important girl who doesn't give a damn about her work, but would rather fool around with the first good-looking guy who's giving her the eye. So yeah, my sympathy for her is very, very limited, if not to say non-existent.
ReplyDeleteAnd well, what Sandi says IS kinda true - he's not seeing the Queen. Sharing 30 seconds alone every 3 months can't be considered courting/dating/affair...ing or whatever, no matter what we'd like to think. I'm also kind of surprised she seems to be taking it in stride considering how jealous she got over Ninon, but then again, she's an intelligent girl - she must have known he wouldn't "save himself" for her and probably wouldn't want him to as it would be a tad suspicious if he suddenly stopped seeing other women. Still, I'd have expected the fact that it's Marguerite of all people to sting a little...
Could be 'share'.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a chance to look at it yet, I'll get to that in a minute (though with only a couple of letters, don't expect too much yet ;)).
ReplyDeleteAnne's also bright enough to work out WHY he's doing it.
ReplyDelete...and commiserate about their joyless life together....not that any of that fits, but it seems that's where your sentence is going...lol ;)
ReplyDeleteTrue. Still, she must be used to quite a bit of heartbreak now to just take it in stride. Or she's suddenly become very, very realistic and mature (compared to season 1 where she seemed very flirty and young)
ReplyDeleteI don't think Aramis was ever with Marguerite just because he wasn't with the queen, and I don't think he would assume he's with the queen just because they kissed, nor do I think the queen would assume this either. As she said in 'Knight takes Queen' she may be cosseted, but she's not naive. Aramis's motivation for being with Marguerite has always been to keep tabs on the dauphin's safety, and that situation hasn't changed, so I'd be surprised if he broke up with her just because the queen kissed him.
ReplyDeleteIn reality, Aramis and the queen have never been together. Though they have feelings for each other, I just don't think that's what they're aiming for.
That of course is the choice the writers have made.
ReplyDeleteThe series is darker in some elements but it seems that certain good parts in the first series have (until last week when the 5 were together again) been let drift too long....to wait until episode 6 for much interaction between D'artagnan and Constance is a long time (even if it is to rachet up the anticipation).
I am clear with one paring/storyline; that Catherine is the vehicle by which Athos/Milady will meet their fate (storyline wise), so to speak. Be it her demise (literally) or a natural parting of the ways on acceptable terms.
I would sense that the same must happen for Anne and Aramis 'cause i cannot believe the writers would get bogged down with it next series.
I feel that Marguerite has been somewhat under used up till now. From the stills/talk when the show was being filmed i thought she would have had a bigger part. Maybe that will change.
ReplyDeleteI think the queen is really practical when it comes down to it. I don't think she would be jealous of Marguerite because she very likely knows why Aramis is doing it, and has plenty of her own stuff to deal with. In the first season, she was courting Aramis's affections, but, now she has them, and a baby, I think she's much less a young queen in love with a dashing knight, and more than ever a practical human being.
ReplyDeleteI think she was on the whole very mature and practical and grounded through the whole of the first season. Aramis was her one weak spot in that arena.
ReplyDeletePlus, she knows it's not only her own life anymore she's toying with if she's not careful...
ReplyDeleteLets try this 'The comradery between the musketeers isn't completely missing from the episode. Treville and Athos share a....'
ReplyDeleteProbably all wrong bit I am slightly proud of myself that it makes sense and doesn't contain goats. Lol
Helen, continuing your train of thought!
ReplyDeleteTreville/and/Athos/share/a/carafe/of/wine/and/contemplate/the/future/
But to be fair, Athos has quite a bit on his own plate... ;)
ReplyDeleteThey have never adequately explained or given enough motivation in my view for why Treville didn't accept the position on the council. He may not like politics, but he was very good at dealing with them in the first series, so I just don't get it. In fact, in series one, it's easy enough to assume Treville and the cardinal were the king's only council. There's a gap there for me that just doesn't fit and feels too contrived.
ReplyDeleteIn the books doesn't Anne have an affair with one of the dukes? If this is true maybe the writers are heading towards that direction but also kind of giving them space from each other because of the consequences they might face. I do hope they will continue an affair at some point in the season because I just love these two together, and plus the King has been treating her very poorly and so I do think she deserves a little enjoyment.
ReplyDelete"The comradery between the musketeers isn't completely missing from the episode. Treville and Athos share a carafe of wine and contemplate the future together as they watch the eclipse." ?
ReplyDelete...if that is it, I will bow down to your greatness and shall never attempt to solve a hangman ever again. :D
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteOh no, I've probably taken you totally off track! It's probably my wishful thinking, as I'd much rather wine than lemslip! ;)
ReplyDeleteLol, I may be completely wrong but I'm just happy that at no point did I have a goat involved :-P
ReplyDeleteBleedin' heck...have you hacked Sandi's account, or something?!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the problem is that Treville saw politics as embodied in the activities of the Cardinal. Under-hand, corrupt and dishonourable. In series one he talked of the difference between the kind of death he dealt in as a soldier and the kind of back alley stabbings that were the stock and trade of the Cardinal. What Treville didn't consider, was that he was presented with the opportunity to set a different tone and to bring some honour to the Court. Instead he allowed the power vacuum to continue and we all know that nature abhors a vacuum. In the absence of an honourable man, the King fell prey to a dangerous, manipulative and profoundly dishonourable man in Rochefort. This decision could ultimately be one of Treville's greatest mistakes.
ReplyDeleteI don't know Anon, that goat needed protecting. It witnessed a full on Constagnan tongue tango. Bonacieux would have put it in a stew.:)
ReplyDeleteIt could be: Treville/and/Athos/share/a/carafe/of/wine/and/comtemplate/his/future/... etc -
ReplyDeletePerhaps if the King had given him more than half a second to decide he may have had a different response. It was unfair of Louis to drop that on a man whose entire career and life have been about soldiering, and expect him to jump at the chance with no opportunity to consider it both sides of the offer,
ReplyDeleteThanks kynikey - for some reason your edited comments isn't showing yet in the forum. I'm off to have some rest for an hour or so... :)
ReplyDeleteIndeed but Louis isn't exactly known for his patience and consideration of others.
ReplyDeleteOn fire with your guesses with six right. Totally agree with the Porthos to Rochefort guess. I'm thinking Porthos may not be the one who says that Aramis is dead, but that it's said by someone who is not a musketeer. Louis. Marguerite. Rochefort.
ReplyDeleteTrue. Right carrying on with the help that not many words end in F and I'm bored on the bus- 'There is also some grief when Porthos ? that Aramis is ....'
ReplyDeleteFan though I am of that particular tongue tango, I can't watch the scene anymore without seeing that goat!
ReplyDeleteAnd THAT's when you realize you spend too much time with the weekly hangman ;)
ReplyDeleteHe isn't, no, but I have sympathy for Treville making the decision he did, wrong or not.
ReplyDeleteIn fairness, it was a beautiful supporting performance. It nibbled that vegetation in a way that was both believable and strangely profound....:)
ReplyDeleteOr maybe it was eyeing them and getting some handy tips...that poor bit of twig didn't stand a chance.
ReplyDeleteIn the books, I believe the affair she has is with the Duke of Buckingham. And if I remember correctly, in one passage, Dumas makes note that Buckingham and Aramis look alike and could be mistaken for each other in low lighting.
ReplyDeleteIn real life, of course, the most pervasive rumor was that she was involved with Mazarin, and that her children were actually his. It's almost more pervasive than the rumor that Louis XIII was homosexual.
This thread has made me laugh :-) The unsung hero of the Musketeers...a goat!
ReplyDeleteMaybe "There is also some grief when Porthos thinks that Aramis is..."
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the 'k' in thinks would have been marked.
ReplyDeleteI really don't want to see a grieving Porthos :-(
"learns" maybe? Next one after "Aramis is.." could be supposedly. But at this point I'm just guessing cause I have no idea and you got this anyway. I'll give you a couple of minutes to come up with the rest, I'm sure you won't need much longer. ;)
ReplyDelete/. It's almost more pervasive than the rumor that Louis XIII was homosexual./
ReplyDeleteWhat 17th century king wasn't! Over in England King James I certainly was, and both he and his son King Charles were rumoured to be lovers of the same man, another Duke of Buckingham. With all that going on it's a wonder ANY European kings managed to reproduce. And It's hardly surprising the Queens (excuse the pun) might have taken affairs when they could get them!
Well, that's what illicit affairs were for. ;) And some people say that storyline is historically inaccurate...lol
ReplyDeleteIt is very exaggerated. Personally, I don't think it's really warranted to say any part of this is about sex or sexual need for him. This might be an extrapolation too far, but Aramis on the show doesn't seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of sex if he doesn't care for the person.
ReplyDeleteThe very few times we've see it - first, the time Porthos and Aramis went seeking patronesses - when Aramis got back to the garrison, he didn't seem that happy, nor did he seem like he'd just had a good sex romp that he was pleased to have had. The second time - this second series where we saw Aramis pulling himself together after (what looked like to me) going down on Marguerite, I got the same feeling - like it was burdensome and not enjoyable to him.
As you say, I'm also in no way impressed that he's involving her in this plot and is using her, but the perception that Show Aramis is all about thoughtless and indiscriminate sex is one I have a hard time connecting with.
What does "Trailer teaser" mean? The "Aramis wears a jewelled crucifix"line wasn't in a trailer. Or did I miss something? Sorry, I'm new to these spoilers.
ReplyDeletePorthos was somewhat of a womanizer in the books, not so much as Aramis, or at least not in the same way. But he sought wealthy women to keep him in style. Frankly, Porthos in the show has so very little to do with Book Porthos, it's almost a completely different character... which I actually very much appreciate. I love this version of Porthos.
ReplyDeleteFor my part, I don't think it's about getting some. I also think it's unlikely we'll ever see Aramis make the first move. I think he's responsive to the queen, but too conscious of their situation and his position to make a genuine play for her. At this point, it'd feel a little weird to me if he did become the one making moves, but that's just me. For now, I'll just wait to see where the show takes us.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's exaggerated, as it seems to be common knowledge in Paris, even if we don't see it much ourselves. inon knew all about him, noting that he was "a soldier who preaches love and a famous libertine who cherishes women."
ReplyDeleteI guess one more comment. Aramis and the baby - Athos totally should have checked.
ReplyDeleteThey had so much going on in that episode that they never brought half the threads back around emotionally or logically. That episode still bugs me.
I also wondered Aramis's reaction. In series one, any time Aramis was distressed or upset, it seemed to make him more focused and ruthless. I guess I can understand being distracted by a baby's cry, but it came off as not so in-character as we knew him in series one.
I think Athos has been pretty on point when riding herd on the others and picking up on their stuff.
ReplyDeleteOh ok! So there will be more Aramis/Anne drama in the episode that follows. I guess Rochefort sees something in E6. Thanks for the answer.
ReplyDeleteOh but gimme some portamis angst. I love their friendship and there is never enough of it. Especially compared to last season.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it Anon! All I could get from the first sentence was 'the musketeers' and I wasn't even sure that was right - that's absolutely amazing! :)
ReplyDeleteThird sentence: "There is even/some more more grief when"?
ReplyDelete*cough* IgotTrevilleandAthosfirstnothatI'mjealousoranything
ReplyDelete:P
That's very true knitty42!!!!!! You're amazing too!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI wish! Not quite, sadly, it took me about three hours to get three words and I'm exhausted . ;) I think Anon is getting help from a higher power!!
ReplyDeleteThe goat's agent.😄 (10% and all the veg he can eat. Goat's terms negotiated separately.😄)
ReplyDeleteThere are way to many options that fit 'there is also some grief when Porthos learns what Aramis is..."
ReplyDelete"There is also some grief when Marmion starts/trouble begins/Treville leaves them" and also that 10 letter word in this sentence is begging to be filled by 'constangan' but I can't male things fit...
I may resort to that goat after all.
Woah... mojo lost. Lol. Treville is an 8 letter word. I'm standing down ;-)
ReplyDeleteI was surprised that the writers have thrown yet another spanner at Athos & Milady - Catherine - because I would have thought that Rochefort and Louis between them would have been enough to seal Milady's fate in whatever way that's going to happen.
ReplyDeleteWhy get Catherine involved? We can only wait and see.
Constagnan feel dragged out because we had to wait during S1 for them to get together as well, so it's been a bit de ja vu. D'Artagnan has been 'ready and willing' since the beginning of S2 but because Constance is trying not to aknowledge her feelings, it is she who needs to make that big move forward really.
The goat is like "42" in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: it's the answer to everything. :)
ReplyDeleteIf he's not in the title sequence for S3, forget 'brood', there will be blood!
ReplyDeleteIt only came about because I thought an R had already been given so I couldn't have them 'saving the girl'. Just thought goat was the next logical choice as you do...
ReplyDeleteI see ****s when I close my eyes now. Lol. Always loved a good hangman though.
What is this about a goat? I must have missed this along the way - it sounds very intriguing! ;)
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree with Ares though that they have largely denied the fans any real Constagnan interaction up to now. It doesn't always have to be about delivering the big romantic moment. I really enjoyed their journey in series one. The banter and tension between them was huge fun, so the wait until "A Rebellious Woman" didn't really feel like a wait at all, or a drag. This series has felt like a total slog where these two are concerned and it's ridiculous that they've been neglected to the point where some in the audience who had been fans of the couple have not only abandoned the ship, they've grown to dislike Constance. Of course they had to overcome the heartache of series one and that would take time but we've even been denied that. They went from shouting, insults and hurt feelings, to giving each other the eye and having a chat down the pub like nothing had happened. The narrative is all over the place. Hopefully episode six might afford an opportunity for some actual meaningful dialogue and much needed interaction between the two.
ReplyDeleteIf only he could understand what exactly is on his plate... his suffering and his blindness are a mortal combo!
ReplyDeleteThe past (in the shape of Catherine) my guess is to reveal what truly happened at the Chateau when Thomas was killed. If the King or Rochefort chose be rid of Milady it would not tie up the loose ends in this storyline, nor give both Athos and Milady a chance to find either redemption (if that is what we are working towards) in her case, or take responsibility for guilt/mistakes in his.
ReplyDeleteBut i could be wrong!!
I have to keep in control my shipper heart!
ReplyDeleteD'Artagnan and Constance snogging in the street in 1x10. look behind them. ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you Knitty42 - I am off to have a look ;)
ReplyDeleteWe could have him and Roger doing a slo mo turn to the camera in the title sequence.:)
ReplyDeletejust episode 4 gave me impression that aramis and anne start again seeing each other.
ReplyDeleteYou make an excellent point about the change in attitude towards Constance. I too have found her rather whiney and almost irrelevant at times this series. I also think your mention of it being a hard slog for the characters is spot on.
ReplyDeleteThey are not alone, i loved the last episode because although i accept that with the ebb and flow of storylines some weeks certain main characters have less to do than others, i was beginning to despair that maybe Athos only turned up for a couple of read throughs because all he had to do was lean, make the odd gem of a comment and disappear without trace for weeks on end. An episode without the dry deadpan delivery i have come to snigger over, has been a whole week wasted!
Now we are getting to the nitty gritty end of these plot lines, i fear that they will be rushed through with little dialogue to conclude them satisfactorily or no satisfaction for some at all.
"I'll just wait to see where the show takes us."
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about this. I mean, Aramis and Anne know the risk, they agree to never do IT again, but apparently this isn't enough. So, in the end, what will they think/do? I'm honestly curious on how them both will approach season 3. (Since, for all we know now, the situation will be the same. Baby, Queen, Musketeer.)
Marguerite is starting to unnerving me.
ReplyDeleteI know Aramis is hot, but God... she's living in the land of the fool.
Thought that too, we were too much optimistic xD
ReplyDeleteWow. That Duke of Buckingham got around! :0
ReplyDeleteHope you get a better night's sleep tonight hun! Just got home myself from the Monday visit to the family, I'll fill in the correct quotes and update the hangman in a bit :)
ReplyDeleteI know that I've stood up for Marguerite before, but I have to admit that her characterisation is bugging me now too. I get the feeling that perhaps some of her scenes are lying on the cutting room floor since she seems so two dimensional at times. Like some others have said, I wish I could feel some sympathy for her, but I just don't tbh.
ReplyDeleteI probably shouldn't say to much until after the episode I guess, and I'm not someone who's very invested in the romance side of the characters in general so I don't always pick up on all the nuances truth be told. But I get the feeling that the two of them are pretty secure in their feelings for each other, but know the impossibility of the situation.
ReplyDeleteFor me, that's why Aramis was more like him old self in the last episode. He had been filled with doubts but now knew feelings were still there and not just one sided, even if nothing could be done about it, so to speak.
Aramis scenes with maguaerite are very bland, he spend with queen 5 min or less its not bland.
ReplyDeleteI think "I'll get me coat", is the most appropriate response to that. ;)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome :) Yep, there is a past connection there some how between Louis and Marmion. At times during the episode Leo Gregory reminds me of Marc Warren strangely enough, lol. His character is a bit crazy too, so you're not wrong there.
ReplyDeleteLouis is a d**k in the sneak peek, totally agree with you there. But he's not the only one who can play games. Marmion's one is going to have a huge effect on him....
You have three quotes right.
Four correct :)
ReplyDeleteCheers Michelle, and yay to uninterrupted Musketeers!!
ReplyDelete*sends hot lemon* Hope you feel better soon Helen! It will soon be Friday and then the episode will cheer you up ;))
ReplyDeleteShe is secure in the knowledge that Aramis does love her, and he will protect her and their son with his life :) She could be in much worse situations.
ReplyDeleteYou have six correct :)
ReplyDeleteLol, it's a goat free zone this week ;)
ReplyDeleteWell done!
That's it, well done guys! I'll fill it in in a bit with the correct quotes once I finish working my way through the comments :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I think I am going to have to come up with something extra hard next week to stump you all with.... Hmmmmm! XD
ReplyDeleteJust Anon. The rest of us are stumped enough, thanks! ;)
ReplyDeleteI guess it boils down to him being a career soldier. As we saw in Pinon last week he can inspire anyone into battle with his passion and determination, while he strutted about like he owned the place. Yet while at court he is always stiff and looks out of place, I get the feeling he doesn't think he's intelligent enough to converse and hold his own with the courtiers and nobles.
ReplyDeleteBut, yes, he should have taken that job as Louis needed someone he could trust by his side at that point in time above any other quality that the post required.
yes but they cant seeing each other. She can just watch his affair with Marguerite, thats sad.
ReplyDeleteis the second last word "everyone's" ?
ReplyDeleteWell, it's not like he hasn't told her that he doesn't love her. But he did get her into circumstances where she's now in over her head with Rochefort. Problem is, I'm just not relating to her plight. Also, I just can't fathom what qualified her to be the dauphin's governess.
ReplyDeleteI think it could be easily said that that has much more to do with reputation via parisian gossip than how he really is. Even in todays' day with rapid information sharing, gossip and perceived reputations rarely match reality. Case in point from the same episode, the queen assumed Aramis was sleeping with Ninon when he wasn't.
ReplyDeleteHe's a visible flirt which has to have fueled court/society gossip, and I'm not saying he's a monk or hasn't done things that have contributed to the reputation, just that this aspect of his character gets unduly flanderized by fans sometimes.
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” could be said to or by constance
ReplyDelete"that one can stay" might be about d'artagnan if he's mostly staying with the king this episode
there/is/also/some/brief/time/ would fit the start of the next sentance
(sorry if this posts twice, disqus is being weird on me)
porthos/*****/with/aramis/to after that possibly, on the them of musketeer comradery
ReplyDeleteMe too, and I feel a little off about it. I was prepared to feel sympathy for her, indignation on her behalf even - all those things. So I feel a little weird that I don't. Who knows, though? Maybe in the back half of the series we will.
ReplyDelete“Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute” - Milady to ?
ReplyDelete“Stay here, you’ll be safe” - Rochefort to Queen Anne
“Some choices are unpleasant and they have to be made, but there are always consequences” - Treville to Athos
“That one can stay, the game must be witnessed” Marmion to the king and courtiers about d'Artagnan
So, yeah - been thinking and new guess: “Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute” - Porthos to Rochefort
ReplyDeletethat(or what)/aramis/is/concealing would also fit...thats a ten letter word, cant think of where that sentance would go next though with two two letter words (also possibly too much of a spoiler to be in hangman who knows)
ReplyDeleteThanks! FINALLY an episode with real Constagnan interaction. I miss their scenes together. Based on your review, we can assume there will be a good amount of scenes with them? :)
ReplyDeleteThat's true..
ReplyDeleteTrying out this now 'There is also some proof that...'
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandi for all the updates :-) I am going to guess that Aramis or Constance says "Frankly, I'd rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute" to who though...Marmion?
Ah, thanks Sandi - hot lemon gratefully accepted!!! :))
ReplyDeleteIs Rochefort starting to realise that the Musketeers are infesting the Palace - words he'd probably use - more than Musketeers usually would because three of them have significant others living there? Anne, Milady and Constance are all lovers / ex-lovers to the King's most loyal Musketeers, which isn't good news for Rochefort's plans. It's clear he starts to realise Aramis's connection to Anne in episodes 6 and 7 but what about the other two?
ReplyDeleteI doubt he's unaware of Constagnan. Constance was hired on the recommendation of D'Artagnan, and with the way she kept defending him when he and the King were missing - not to mention Rochefort's uncanny way of uncovering secrets - I'd bet he's known for a while.
ReplyDeleteIt could well be right... ;) I'm also working on the middle of the 3rd line. It could be something like:
ReplyDelete.../to/break/a/promise/to/*****/********/****/****/***/*****/*****/*****/everyone’s/*****,
but this may not be correct!
"Everyone's lives"?
ReplyDeleteHi intrepido, welcome to the site! :)
ReplyDeleteCorrect, Marmion is talking about d'Artagnan being the witness to the game.
The first and last are correct :)
ReplyDeletedo you think after episode 6 Louis gonna change, be little nicer or be mean . How Marmion game change him .
ReplyDeletepicture is sherlock holmes
ReplyDeleteRochefort said in the very first episode that he wanted the four Musketeers dead because they were Louis's most loyal Musketeers - and now he's gradually learning that three women within the palace could confide in those Musketeers - but not much has been said about that since episode 1, which is why I'm hoping tensions between Rochefort and the main four hot up over the remaining eps..
ReplyDeleteOnce Constagnan are back together, Bonacieux is unlikely to let it end there but at the moment what can he offer Rochefort, unless it's to get both Constance and d'Artagnan out of the palace or possibly killed?
or just siluett
ReplyDeleteWith just the sneak peek when he talk about the queen and the Treville's removal you can see him being a little mean not like it was in season 1.
ReplyDeleteWith Marmion game, the king could change but as long as he has Rochefort by his side ,I don't think so -but let's hope-
Changing it up completely now and attempting to follow on from "Athos is more than aloof when..." If nothing else the word 'aloof' is ace.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's in it though.
ReplyDelete;)
i sure they still together because from trailer teaser from ep.7 Rochefort asking Marguerite get aramis rosary. Yes he likes anne, but i think he be with Marguerite until finale maybe and in season 3
ReplyDeleteouhh! some past connection between them, really looking forward to this episode then
ReplyDeleteOnce Constance has left him and there's no chance of her coming back, I fear Bonacieux will be of that mind that 'if I can't have her, he won't either' and seek revenge on them both, but as he's too much of a coward to go after D'Artagnan directly, he'll go through Constance instead. Hurting her hurts D'Artagnan equally. Rochefort could be the perfect conduit for that revenge, and as Bonacieux had no qualms about spying for the Cardinal last year, I'm sure he'd offer Rochefort whatever he wants if he can make D'Artagnan and Constance pay. It will certainly get him killed, coz he's completely expendible to Rochefort, but he's such a nasty little weasel he won't realise it in his anger and bitterness.
ReplyDeleteConstance has no personal secrets that can be exploited now her affair is public, but she does know about Aramis and Anne, which puts her in danger from them both. :(
**/***c******/**/**/
ReplyDeleteis/discovered/to/be/
?
“Frankly I would rather be dead than listen to your endless babble for one more minute” Milady to Constance, perhaps?
ReplyDelete“Aramis? Aramis is dead. The fall”
Ten point for the trusth Marguerite -.-
Does Constance babble though? I'd have thought that'd be more her stupid husband. ;)
ReplyDeleteIn this case though, what about Milady to Rochefort? Or has someone already guessed that!
Or Milady to Marmion. Let's be honest, she's unlikely to be intimidated by him!
ReplyDeleteYee, reading of someone who was babbling i automatically thought of someone who talk a lot, ops. xD
ReplyDeleteBut not even Rochefort babble... maybe she's speaking to someone who's badly injured, and that could be Marmion or his second in command.
It does seem like he enjoys his own voice and being centre of attention!
ReplyDeleteI like your thinking. Could be Aramis or Milady in that spot!? Also it could end with right/wrong/alive...
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the next letter will help click it all into place.
Thinking, going off other peoples guesses, the whole thing could end 'the truth would alter everyone's lives'
?
Might it then be "Once/when Aramis is discovered to be alive."
ReplyDelete
