The Musketeers - Through a Glass Darkly - Advance Preview + Dialogue Teasers

This season is starting to remind me of another of my favourite shows, Doctor Who, with its ability to change its theme and tone so successfully week by week. The last episode was the Wild West, this time we have steampunk mayhem with a side order of Shakespearean tragedy and romance thrown in for good measure. Renowned astronomer Marmion has transformed a room in a derelict fort into a Galileo inspired auditorium, to which he invites the royals and other dignitaries to view the impending solar eclipse.

All is not as it appears though, like the eclipse itself the thrill and wonder that the sanctuary provides is all too fleeting. The guests soon discover that the whole charade has been a cover up for something far more sinister. With the Red Guards efficiently dispatched before the opening credits, and the Musketeers either shackled or defenestrated shortly afterwards, the situation escalates rapidly. The reason for all the dramatics is however relatively simple, a game is about to be played. Louis may not know it but he and Marmion are connected in a way that he could never imagine, fate has played a role in their lives before and now it’s time to decide what the choices are.

The main plot may be a tad predictable and not particularly innovative, though I can’t fault any of the performances, especially when it comes to Gage, Pasqualino, Kari and the guest stars, Leo Gregory and Nathan Wright. The ‘game’ they are involved in builds effectually through the hour, with d’Artagnan once again attempting to help Louis through their capture, as he did in An Ordinary Man, but this time the stakes are much higher. Plus, Constagnan fans will no doubt be looking forward to the significant momentum forward that the couple go through during the course of the episode. They have each other’s back at all times, work very effectively as a team and share a few heartfelt thoughts.

With the characters split up for the majority of the episode it’s obviously a very different tone to last week’s where we saw a strong sense of comradery return between the leads themselves. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as they are separated into groups that shift the individual plots along or give us some insight into their motivations thus far. Porthos and Rochefort are probably the most unusual pairing. Yet the down to earth, plain speaking Musketeer manages to pry a surprising confession out of him with very little effort, even if he doesn’t understand its full meaning.

This week's hangman has been solved, awesome teamwork! Your extra Trailer Teasers have been added below, I won't be revealing who says what as you will be seeing it soon for yourself. Enjoy the episode, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on it in the poll afterwards :)

The picture clues have been solved - Sherlock Holmes & Reichenbach Falls = A character doesn't die as expected after taking a fall

The comradery between the Musketeers isn’t completely missing from the episode. Treville and Athos share a carafe of wine and contemplate the future together as they watch the eclipse. There is also some brief good natured banter when Aramis is discovered to be alive, and Athos even manages to sneak a warning in about spending time with the queen right under everyone’s noses.
