    Renewed...despite the BBC's best efforts. ;) Fantastic news! Hopefully they'll take on board the absolute slating they've had over this year's shoddy treatment and put S3 back on SUNDAYS!!! Or at lesat think twice about yanking it every time a bunch of idiot men decide to kick a ball around. Very pleased for the cast and crew who really deserve another series for their hard work.

    And I can't complain at another year of Mowgli in his leathers. :P

    I'm new to the show, started last week and I'm on ep 4 now. I totally fell in love with it, it's absolutely great. To be honest I'm confused why BBC is treating it poorly. Glad it was renewed and hope to see more episodes.

    SO HAPPY! Was hoping for the best, but expecting the worst especially with it being on Friday nights now and with all the interruptions and recent view numbers...just so happy! :) :) Really curious and excited now to see what direction they will be heading in S3 (especially with my speculations for the rest of S2).

    Maimie said something about a three year option on their contracts, which I presume means that if it does go to 3 years, they're signed up from the start to do them all. After that, they could leave or renegotiate, although I doubt we'll get a 4th series.

    Also Luke hasn't had a haircut since they stopped filming, and Santi is growing his beard again, so I don't think we're in danger of losing the boys, at least!

    BBC going full out tramp. "Financially support" oh GIVE IT A REST. The BBC is so cheap its disgusting. We all pay a TV fee which goes straight to them. They set up networks around the world like BBC America and show our own funded shows there and they have the nerve to shove BBC Three online, cancel In The Flesh and make flat out donkey crap all year round (apart from 3-4 expectations) . The Musketeers is flat out horse shit thats typical of BBC. CBBC is where all the good stuff is (Yes, all their good stuff is on the KIDS CHANNEL). Atlantis was god awful, DW is slipping. BBC and their co-productions because they can't afford it? Yeah you can f*** off

    As far as contracts go, it appears that series 3 will be the final series that the cast HAVE to do, anything beyond that is optional. Someone reported at Xmas - during a carol service - that Tom had expressed a desire to make S3 his last but whether that's true or not, no one knows.

    What does seem likely - based on Adrian Hodges saying that S3 will see D'artagnan begin his "heroic journey" during a Livejournal Q&A - is that Adrian initially only planned for three series.

    With this statement coming from a BBC Worldwide spokesman, does that mean that they have upped their chunk of the production monies? I don't think it will have any effect on how the show is made, but the airing rights are my only concern.


    Why the heck are the BBC being so darn quiet about the show in general, I just don't understand it at all :/

    What kind of shows do you like? It's a costume drama, but I wouldn't say it's anything like, say, Downton Abbey, nor is it as camp as some of the more recent film versions. If you like leads that do their own stunts/fights, good humoured banter and some romance thrown in too then I'd say give it a go. Here's the promo for S1 to give you an idea of how it looks :)

    It hadn't been looking good had it, so this is fabulous news! I've been out all day with family so couldn't get online to celebrate properly with anyone. My mum likes the show and was happy with the news, but that is hardly the same, lol! I am wondering where they will take it next season too, will we have a cliffhanger at the end of this year do you think?

    Yep, it's not helped at all. Silent Witness did well in that slot last year, as did Jonathan Creek. The difference being, of course, that they are both well established shows and were promoted well.

    I feel it might be one of those shows that actually does quite well internationally (I don't have any hard proof mind you, just an assumpiton). So if BBC Canada & BBC America had the numbers maybe they pushed for more...?

    It does phenomenally well overseas, it's sold to over 140 countries and is the second most popular drama the BBC have internationally after Doctor Who. This is why I've been saying that the third season was almost a certainty for the last six months or so, and why I am a little wary about this wording from a BBC WW rep now.

    Hmm, it could be. They did say that they keep upsetting their historical advisor with the changes they make after all, and that would be a massive one, lol.


    I was also wondering earlier how Anne's letter to her brother could be brought up again by Rochefort. I have a feeling that he suspects that something is up between Anne and Aramis, and if he does get conformation of that he could use it to blackmail her. Then Constance, or Aramis, will maybe try and get it back in order to stop him, perhaps even replacing it with something that incriminates Rochefort instead. So when he takes it to the King, he basically reveals his own crimes and/or feelings about Anne to him, lol.

    I think what bypassed whoever made this decision is that The Musketeers has a different narrative style than those two shows and they don't belong in the same kind of time slot. You can take Silent Witness and Jonathan Creek off for a couple of weeks and nobody would really mind, because the stories are pretty much wrapped up each week and self-contained. Whereas the Musketeers has a building plot and intricacies that you need to continue with in progression, not stop one week and start again a fortnight later and expect the tension or enthusiasm to still be there.

    hope it won't be easy for Rocheford to find out but i think he could, as he found out the marguerite's affair with Aramis
    (I was a little suprised about how he found out but it's Rocheford , he's like a snake - that for sure-) =) .
    And if he learns about the romance between Aramis and Anne he 'll be really really mad .
    As I've read it in an interview Rocheford will put the queen under threat so I think he could feel there is something up between them .

    Well, working in the business, my evaluation and assumption came from the fact that the news came from BBC WW and the wording.


    That statement makes it sounds like the internationals partners might be chipping in to make the production sustainable for BBC. Probably because (per your comment) their revenues are hitting the profit margins.

    lol, I got my sister and brother-in-law into the show, but their reaction was more like "oh cool" while I was smiling the whole day :p Hmmm...good question. Cause we sort of didn't for season 1 did we? Season 1 pretty much wrapped up without any unanswered questions or major cliffhangers in my perspective.

    With the last episode's overnights falling to 3.1 million, I was suddenly concerned about a third series, despite what director Andy Hay was tweeting..

    It's a good show that's just not caught the publics imagination for some reason, perhaps because they think serious crime dramas and reality shows are the best thing since sliced bread..

    To be fair, the series 1 final had overnights of 3.9 million, despite being on a Sunday night. I don't think S2 scheduling is the only reason for the show's low figures..

    I think many people still think The Muskereers is a bit camp, especially with the S1 opener where Aramis is jumping out of windows to escape 'the husband' so to speak and Constance is dressing up as a prostitute within 10 minutes of meeting her. It was a 9pm opener that had the feel of an 8pm opener - which of course is what it was when it was produced - so that didn't help.

    I think it's unlikely that ALL the Musketeers would want to do the show indefinately, at least one might be itching to move their careers forward by the end of S3..

    I do think some of what Tom and Adrian have said has been twisted and misinterpreted by fans - where I've listened to the same interview they're quoting and thinking, 'Yeah, I didn't get that at all'.


    I don't think the intent is outright lying, but fan fears/hopes seem to lead to hearing things they want to hear and extrapolating meaning from things that maybe weren't so explicit, or may not mean what they think they do.

    A bit off topic, but since we're on a happy vibe with S3 renewal, can I just say how lovely it is to be on a forum where people aren't biting each other's heads off, as has been going on lately in other STV's pages. I've been on a number of different show forums but the Musketeers seems to have brought together some really friendly people, and I just wanted to say thanks to everyone, and that I'm looking forward to another series of speculation, drooling and nattering. :D x

    I'm interested by your comment about "airing rights" Sandi, but not quite sure what you mean by it. Do you fear, perhaps, that BBC in the UK might "demote" the show to BBC2, or maybe even to BBC3, which I believe is moving to an online-only service?

I am glad I found this site where i'm among "friends" that have some great views about the Musketeers and the story, where the obsession is welcomed, encouraged along with the drooling, sighing, fantasizing, etc. is OK <3 :D

    I would think that with the shorter seasons in the UK that having a show like this running 4-5 years would be better return on investment, ie, their sword training, etc. ? I think even the fans might contribute $$ to keep this show running but maybe it's just to expensive?

    If BBC WW/America are fronting more money than BBC One are this time round (the reverse has been true so far) then they would have the airing rights to show it first on their channel - like BBC America - before it airs in the UK.
    Hence they would be saving Licence Fee payer money, but also taking the first viewing rights to another channel.

    I don't like the sound of that! Of course, it's great that the Musketeers is an international success and it should be made as widely available as possible all over the world, but it is essentially a British production and should, IMHO, always be shown first in the UK. Are there any examples of the scenario you mention occurring with any other joint-funded BBC productions, or is The Musketeers a bit of a trailblazer anyway, with its BBC One / BBC Worldwide / BBC America model of funding?
