The Middle - The Answer - Review: "Goodbye Sue Heck"

The Middle "The Answer" Review

After last week’s cliff-hanger of "will she" or "won't she" it was anyone's guess as to what she would say. I already new though prior to the episode that she would say yes - mainly because I knew the episode would center around her answer - and if it was a no it wouldn't have been as good.

"Oh my god, tell me you're not married" Frankie

This was a sad episode for The Middle; we had to witness the end of Sue and Darrin’s relationship after they were at crossroads about their futures. Sue wants to go places, unlike Darrin who feels he is where he needs to be. I was actually quite devastated to see them break up. Sure, I didn't want Sue to get married - I also didn't expect it to happen - but Sue was finally with someone who made her really happy. She finally had everything she had wanted ever since the first episode, no braces, a boyfriend and a career.

What now for Darrin? With Axel being at college and Sean making only a handful of appearances here and there, Sue and his relationship was the only thing tying him to the show for more than one odd episode at a time. Now it's over I don't think we'll see Darrin feature much at all, which is a shame as I took a real liking to the characters personality. I like how he never knows what's happening and how he always comes up with an idea that is completely bizarre. I'll miss that. Who knows though I could be wrong and we might still see him a lot. Maybe, just maybe, they will get back together.
As expected, Frankie and Mike - mainly Mike - went into a state of rage when Sue told them. Some of the best moments in the episode came when Sue, each day, went and told her parents even worse news than the previous day. Mike obviously is overprotective of Sue which we have known since season 1 so it was nice to see it still continue into this episode - even though she is more grown up. I loved seeing Mike and Frankie's stunned reaction every time Sue would say something. It was like they were being slapped in the face every night, their reactions were priceless. I also enjoyed them bringing up "we're lazy parents" again. We used to hear all the time from them so I was glad they revisited that. It's always been enjoyable to see them doubt their parenting skills over the years and it didn't disappoint here.

Sue has been the star of the season for me; she is the standout in every episode. I haven't enjoyed seeing her moan about college, but episodes like these really make you appreciate how far the character of Sue has developed. She is slowly growing up, and is starting to make her own decisions. Eden Sher is someone who has helped make Sue who she is today and the comedy, The Middle, as great as it is. If she doesn't receive an Emmy just for her performance for this episode, I will be shocked. She is remarkable. The big question I have now is... What will happen to Sue next season? Will she go to college or will something devastating happen that will ruin her chances - typical Middle drama. Who knows, but one things for sure, I'm very excited to find out.

"Her name is going to be Sue Sue McGrew" Axel

Elsewhere, Axel this episode, helped Brick to get rid of his ticks. The problem behind them was the chair he had been given to sit in at the dinner table. I found this to be completely bizarre and extremely random, but what was strange about it was that it actually made him stop whooping. Speaking of Brick, I'm actually hoping to see a bit more of him and perhaps an episode solely focused on him. I think he has been the most underused out of all of them this season and he doesn't entertain me as well as he used to. I'm even hoping his ticks don't go permanently as they're what make up the Brick character.

Speaking of Axel, there has been news that Charlie has been cast in a new pilot "Super Clyde" and since all the casts contracts are up at the end of the season, it could be quite worrying. What do you guys think? I think if Charlie were to leave it wouldn't create much of a problem as he is the easiest to write out. If he left I would hope he'd at least recur in Season 7. I don't think he will leave, but if he does it would be a terrible loss for the show as the cast is small enough as it is.

As always, thank you for reading! Let me know in the comments what you thought of " The Answer"

  1. This is just a one of review, I just wanted to get a few thoughts I had out there.

  2. That was the best episode of The Middle of the season, in my opinion. I sure hope they have a long-term direction with this though. I really wish they promised to get married at a later date, because I really don't want to see Darrin being written off. Also, if they got married right away they could have risked having a jump the shark moment.

The Axl-Brick B-plot (C-plot) was really nice as well, I hope they don't lose Axl to Super Clyde.

  3. It was heartbreaking seeing Sue and Darrin broke up I still don't get why this show never get emmy's Eden Sher and Patricia Henton deserve to have emmy's this show is one of the best underrated show on air

  4. It was extremely sad, that music playing at the end didn't help as it made the scene even more heartbreaking.

I really can't understand why The Middle gets overlooked every single year, it really annoys me. Fingers crossed 2015 might be the year...

  5. The show needs recurring characters, as the cast is already slim compared to other comedies. Darrin will probably be back someday, and hopefully he will get back together with Sue.

If we do lose Axel they will surely have to bring someone in as 4 regulars on a show is tiny. Maybe Uncle Rusty or Mike's dad? There always fun to have around.

  6. What do you mean?! It's been nominated for an Emmy before! Best Prosthetic Makeup in an Episode of a Single-Camera Comedy!

And no, I didn't make that up. Very sad, but true.

Imagine its ratings if it actually got the love it deserves? I have a feeling tonight's episode will rate well though.

  7. Didn't know that. That isn't the Emmy I want to see this show get!

The ratings are always good for The Middle, but episodes like these, and the holiday ones tend to do better than normal.

If it won an Emmy for best supporting and best actress the show might get some more viewers, but ultimately I just think that Patrica and Eden in particular deserve some recognition for their fine work.

  8. I think its agreeable that Darrin was the most important recurring character, and has had a lot of presence this season. There's a reason they had him stick around after Axl went to college, after all.

Also, the thing is about Axl is that losing him would also be a loss for Brick, as they seem to be paired up a lot lately.

I do agree that Brick isn't as entertaining anymore, but I guess its just a part of growing up—still, better than the kids on MF.

I agree that the cast is too small. It is at a major disadvantage when it comes to that. I mean, the Friday comedies don't need kids really. The Goldbergs and FOTB take place in the past and the kids aging wouldn't ruin the theme. If MF loses a less-prominent character, they could just throw in someone new with endless possibilities.

The Middle clearly has a problem on its hands. Reportedly Charlie has never gotten a raise, so that may be part of the problem.

  9. Eden Sher is the star of the show.

I know its ratings are always good but will be disappointed if it doesn't rise this week. Charlie's in the TV-world news, and I couldn't wait to see what would happen with Pt2 of Sue-Darrin. I usually watch all my shows online but I made myself watch this episode live.

It almost gets me wondering if this should have been an hour-long, though.

  10. I will as well, I'm hoping for a season high. I think it can happen.

Sue consistently makes me laugh, without her there wouldn't really be a show. I don't watch many shows live, but I normally watch The Middle as it's been my favorite comedy now for 5 years. (Began watching during Season 2).

  11. He was, he adds a lot to the show. He also helped develop Sue a little bit as well. Losing Axel would be a loss for the show, sure he's easy to write out, but things would feel different.

    - Axel and Sue wouldn't have their arguments which are usually entertaining.
    - Brick would probably be featured a lot less
    - Mike wouldn't be able to talk sports/play sports with anyone
    - No more Frankie moaning at Axel, which is always enjoyable to watch.

I never knew they never gave him a raise, perhaps when ABC or whoever does the contracts finally get around to it, they might cave and give him a raise which hopefully would persuade him to stay.

  12. I loved this episode so much. The Middle is always entertaining to me, but tonight's episode was special. It had the usual craziness/wackiness, but it also struck just the right chord with the Darrin and Sue story. I was sad to see them break up, but it made sense since right now they both want different things. Episodes like this are when the show is at its best and it's such a shame that it never gets any award recognition.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It was. It was one of the best episodes of the entire season, perhaps even the best one. I suppose since Sue is going to college (if nothing goes wrong) it makes sense that they would break up as he would feature a lot less then anyway, still I would've like to have seen them remain together.

I'm hoping 2015 will be the year for The Middle. It's long overdue some awards.

  14. Loved this ep. I felt bad for sue. But Darren was really rushing! She's 17!!!! And she's a very young 17. I wish Darren understood and gave her some time. He wants to marry her but he can't give her some time? I guess they needed to write him off or reduce his role? But I will miss the tiny house!!!! I liked when his stuff was on the front lawn and he said he will save room for her stuff. That lawn was fullllllll. Lol.

My 6 year old lovesssss this show. We watch it together. And sometimes on reruns! I like it. Not sure why awards don't happen. It's better than modern family even though the cast is small.

  15. If you write it, we will read. Good synopsis.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mike and Frankie better have another baby lol! Or sue needs to commute to college. I hope Axl sticks around in some capacity at least--- if not every ep!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Haha, that would be funny if that happened. I'm hoping he doesn't go at all, but I guess we will have to wait until May.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks, I'm just not sure I'll have time for one everyweek. I'm already reviewing two shows, and have The Following coming up.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He was rushing a lot, but I suppose that's what happens when there's an age gap.I hoped that they would've remained together despite her saying no, but I guess it wasn't to be.

I watch re-runs sometimes as well, every single episode of the show I find enjoyable. I never liked Modern Family, saw 2 episodes and didn't find it funny at all. So I can't understand why that wins awards and The Middle doesn't.

  20. well time and again this show has made me relate to my family.
thats what i love about this show.
    i m not a ship lover but i did like sue-darrin.

  22. Awesome episode.
Loved the last scene with all the Hecks together.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sadly I don't. I was trying to find it, but it was like searching for a needle in a haystack. It was a fantastic choice of music, and if I find it you will be the first to know!

    ReplyDelete
  24. It was, I thought it was one of the best episodes of the season. I enjoy seeing all of them together, I wish we would see more scenes of the complete 5 as them scenes are normally either heartfelt or hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree, it's one of the few shows I watch that I can relate to. I liked Darrin and Sue pairing as well, they fitted perfectly together which is why I'm hoping they might get back together at one point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Loved the episode and love the show, as you and others have said its so underrated but hey we know its good at least. I'm sad about Darrin and Sue and yet glad they didn't go the Sue getting married route, it just wouldn't make sense and no way would Frankie and Mike have been able to support it.

As for the possibility of Charlie/Axel leaving, whilst I prefer storylines that focus on the rest of the Heck family, it would be very weird if he was written off completely, it wouldn't work at all as they are all so close. He would have to be reoccurring so Axel could turn up at least during holiday episodes. I think it will be ok though, don't imagine Super Clyde getting picked up and I kind of assumed Sue would go to Axel's college next year and allow the show to have more Sue and Axel college episodes.

  27. I fee like with all these contracts up in the air The Middle is going to get Last Man Standing-ed. It always seems like its a late renewal, doesn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  28. It does, I hope it doesn't take the LMS route, and leave it right down to the last minute. Last year ABC forgot to renew The Middle with the other shows, and the renewal came an hour later than everything else...

If none of the cast sign on, because they have signed up with other shows, I will be forever mad with ABC.

The cast want a job next season and since casting in pilots has begun now, they can either wait until may and hope the show is renewed or guarantee themselves a job by signing onto a new project, like Charlie has.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ABC needs to start giving out early renewals again. It seems like every year since Paul Lee took over The Middle has been renewed last. This year is going to ne merve-wracking if they hold out so long since we know what's going on with contracts.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's hasn't been treated right since it started, they focus all their attention on MF even though this is just as successful (Maybe not in terms of ratings), and has been running the same amount of time.

Yep, I was glad she didn't get married, as she is way to young for that now, perhaps in a few seasons. I don't know why, but I got the feeling that they were deliberately trying to break Sue & Darrin up for the sake of future story-lines, hence the random proposal.

Super Clyde doesn't sound too good to be honest, and I am hoping it doesn't get a pick up. Charlie can easily recur on the show, as they can just use the excuse "he's at college" or something when explaining his absence.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree they should start renewals early. It's also a pain that when they do renew shows it's not all in one go, but one at a time.

It will be nerve wracking, just seeing the constant updates for LMS standing last year (even though I don't watch) about negotiations with contracts was awful. I'd hate for The Middle to be in the same boat, as I don't think I could bare to wait a week longer for a renewal than everything else. (Like LMS fans had to)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm so glad The Middle got a review! It deserves much more love than it's getting.

I have yet to watch the episode, so I'll comment on it later, but was just wondering, I know Charlie signed on for another pilot but is that in first position? Or would they recast him if the pilot gets picked up and The Middle gets renewed. Because obviously it's getting renewed and I don't believe they want to lose Charlie ( even demote him to just recurring character).
I personally don't want him to leave and I feel that the dynamic would change too much and it would feel like different show.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I thought I would write a piece as I had a few thoughts to share about the show. Charlie is the lead in "Super Clyde". They can re-cast him easily, but in the end it's his choice.

As much as I love Charlie on the show saying no to being the lead in your own show is hard to do, so ABC will have to give him a really tempting offer to walk away from it, especially if it gets picked up.

  35. Yeah I don't get why they wait so long to lock the actors up, but then again I can't imagine something like this happening on their favorite shows like Modern Family. They know The Middle is reliable and I don't understand why they don't make this show one of the priorities.

I watched the episode, and it was fantastic, possibly my favorite yet. The storyline with Sue was fantastically done and it was so Sue to do that and not want to say no. Perfect. And I also enjoyed the story line with Brick and Axl, really excited to see if it sticks and it was the chair. Some amazing quotes all around.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It probably wouldn't. Example: To my knowledge they gave contracts to the grey's Anatomy cast before May (when the renewals take place). So you would think a 6 year old show on ABC would get the same treatment, but no.

They're now going to leave it until the last minute, and risk loosing one of it's stars.

As for the episode, I found it to be among the best episodes of The Middle, I loved how she kept going back and fourth to her parents and Darrin. She can never really say no, only when it gets out of hand. I couldn't imagine The Middle without her.

That would be crazy if it was the chair, completely bizarre, but he has been sitting in it since day 1 so who knows.
