The Mentalist - Nothing Gold Can Stay - Review

Feb 5, 2015

Just when eveything seemed to be fine for everyone, Nothing Can Stay Gold happened on The Mentalist. Jane takes extreme measures as the team tries to apprehend a deadly gang of armored car robbers before their desperation to remain free costs more innocent people their lives.

At the beginning we see some lights. Finally a self-confident Wylie asks Vega out, and then asks Abbott for romantic advices outside the work affairs. Man, those people are become a family and a group of friends. Then, Jane tells Lisbon about his plans for her for a romantic weekend, since he just wants to be with her - awwww. Duty calls so Cho and Vega need to go and find a pair of robbers, but when they find them, tragedy appears. There's a fight in which Vega is shot and die at the hospital.

Cho feels responsable for Vega's death, as she was just become part of the FBI-family. He is determinated to make the criminals pay for killing Vega. Just like an old Patrick Jane searching for vendetta, he doesn't want to listen to anyone; and that's Kimball Cho the Ice Man: the same man who cries watching Vega's file on his computer. This scene made my heart melt.
Cho doesn't even want to go for Jane's plan when he shares with the team the idea of breaking into the house, where the robbers have taken hostages, and make them confess. Cho's anger and desire of payback Vega's death is still high. I see even Mr Kimball Cho has some dark side and saw what happened when someone you cared about die in front of you. Everyone reacted differently: Lisbon's character developed at the point she can hug someone, so she hugs Wylie, who's the most saddest in the team. Jane doesn't believe in the Great Beyond, Lisbon does. She needs to believe Vega is somewhere safe and sound. I find always beautiful the way Lisbon keeps showing her faith.

Anyway, since Jane doesn't believe neither in Hell nor Heaven, he's still worried about Lisbon's life as he wants to see her wounded or worse dead. Vega's death surely gave him a lot of thinking, more than the previous episodes. As Lisbon refuses to stay out of the action, Jane offers himself to the criminals in order to make them change their minds and turn against each other. Jane's plan was all that: it's all about money. The two robbers never wanted to share their money. The case concludes with a man down, shot by Cho, and one injured.

The end was absolutely awesome and dramatic. It gave me chills and made me cry. Vega's funeral while a sad song was playing background were perfect. It hadn't be easy for Patrick Jane to be at someone's funeral and surrounded by all that pain - he's been there before, and this makes him thinks: he doesn't want to feel the same anymore with Lisbon. Here we go. I still wonder why a woman should chose to quit her career to stay with her man. But, by the way both are unreasonable. She can't quit, he doesn't want her to play cop. What's the solution? Jane leaves her. Again. And it's not easy, he's suffering. He wanted to leave the country to stay in a happy place with his girlfriend, but he didn't realize yet that the happiest place in the world is to be with her.

Will Vega's death impact on all of The Mentalist's character?

  1. I think that Vega's death should impact on Lisbon rather than Jane. He actually began to express his viewpoint even in 704, but Lisbon just stuck to her "I'm an FBI agent". This formula worked when she was alone, when they both were lone wolves, but not anymore: she and Jane are linked psychologically now, so they should learn to negotiate. I'm sure they'll find the way out. And I do not agree that he left her - he left his old demons, cause he has the point refusing to suffer again.

  2. This episode was to break heart and soul, but what Jane did in the end with Lisbon, considering all that Lisbon already passed and faced for him ... Oh Jane, selfish! If I were Lisbon, I would never forgive him

  4. I read a comment that described my feelings so well "it saddens me that some can't understand Jane, Lisbon is being so stupid this season, choosing job over love, Jane has been trying to tell her how he feels but she just pushed away his feelings, you can see through the episode he is doing anything to make her happy even if he doesn't enjoy what she does but is she doing the same? He came back and risked prison and found job for them both on FBI just to see her and make her happy, why can't she do the same? Will he always give up for her in their relationship? And in the previous episode he was devastated trying to tell her how sad and scared of losing her he is but she just said are you jealous? What kind of an answer is this? He actually risked his life, went inside unarmed just to save her and she didn't even looked scared about his life, I'm starting to doubt she actually loves him, she will do what Pike want but can't even listen to Jane, will it be possible for her to just find something to do for him, he stayed working on something he hate for her, why can't she do the same? And no he didn't stay because of his contract, everyone knows Jane can find a way out of it, Abbott actually owed it to him, I'm disappointed with one thing in this episode, it's that I thought Lisbon at the end she will be the one to come to Jane and tell let's leave but clearly she doesn't understand him yet. "
At first I didn't want to take anyone's side but reading some comments and how people keep bashing Jane just made me speak up, if you are willing to understand Lisbon, try to understand Jane as well please, and enough with the harsh comments for the writers and characters.

  5. Exactly, he's being selfish

  6. In his quest for RJ, Lisbon even fearing for his life, supported him, cried, suffered and many other pain she endured for him. The work was the only thing she had, especially in the two years that he was a fugitive. Jane more than anyone, should know that some things,
only time will to resolve, and convince Lisbon to leave the job, it's one of these things! Leave in the way he left, was a cowardly and cruel attitude to her. (sorry for the mistakes, I dont speak English)

  7. Jane didn't leave her, he said he wants to leave the FBI, he told her she can come with him, she should understand him too.

  8. Lisbon is being selfish too, choosing job over love.

  9. It does seems selfish as he knew what she was all about - and understood the job from the beginning of pursuing a relationship. But on the other hand, he seems to be saying he is leaving and not really pressuring her to go to. But it would be nice if he'd say - 'I WANT to be with you, I want you to come' -- instead of the way he did it which was 'I'm going and you can come if you want'. It struck me as either insensitive or maybe insecure that he doesn't think she'll choose Love over Job so he's not trying hard.

  10. True...we should not be so hard on Jane I suppose...Lisbon should realize Jane has come really far in their relationship-has further to go-but he has made progress considering his background. I just hope Lisbon realizes that the job is not worth losing him over. The rumors suggest a happy ending here so either she realizes that at the end of the day a job never substitutes love/family - or he decides to deal with his issues. Will have to be a compromise, I"m very curious to see how it goes!

  11. Jane's still hunting by his old demons. Leaving her is not a solution, they should negotiate.

  12. Calling Jane 'selfish' is not the right way. Sure, he didn't act well with her by leaving. He should have stayed and talk with Lisbon. Instead, he chose to go and he was sad, he was suffering because he had to leave her, again. He blames himself for being still hunting by his old demons.

  13. I think someone has the right to chose what they want. Personally, I would never quit my job for a man, and I don't see Lisbon being that kind of person.

  14. My point is that I haven't noticed Lisbon even try to negotiate while Jane has been trying to initiate the discussion for some time already.

  15. Great review again Diana. My understanding is that Jane hasn't left yet but is going to and Lisbon can go with him or stay. Presumably he would have to get out of his contract with the FBI before he goes. Sadly, they here are both facing their worst fears. She, her fear that one day he would just leave and for Jane it's the fear of loss. I do feel for Jane, his fears are real, but Lisbon, with all her abandonment issues from her childhood has just found the courage to commit to Jane emotionally. I don't think she really ever loved another man so for her it's a heart break. I hope they can resolve this in way that does not leave 2 very unhappy people.

  16. True, selfish maybe not the right word. He feels bad that is he disrupting their relationship. Maybe he feels guilty to ask her to choose so that is why he is not really asking her to choose, just saying that he will leave. Either that or he doesn't think she will leave the FBI so he is bracing himself from the pain of being rejected. Or maybe another option is that he is not really over his wife and this is a way of making distance/not committing. Well, anyways, it is interesting to think about, the writers leave a lot unsaid so there is much to speculate about!! Thanks for your review Ms Mack, you always stimulate good discussions!

  17. thanks for reading my reviews!! :)

  18. Thanks for reading :) yes, I agree, I'm sure they will have their happy endings. They need to understand each others's needs... that's how a couple works.

  19. He had been trying to talk to her since episode 5 this season, maybe by his move now she will stop to really think about it not just push away his fears with an answer like are you jealous. His said I'm leaving, meaning the FBI my guess was well spotted.

  20. The fact is I don't see why Lisbon should quit her job when he's always known being a cop is part of her life. I wonder if they will leave the FBI and start a private agency on their own.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Private agency was already applied to Rigspelt, so I'm not sure about this way out, maybe they will cooperate :)
I didn't mean Lisbon to quit, as a matter of fact I don't know how to solve their problem, but I don't see Lisbon trying to solve it. It seems to me that she's deaf to Jane's anxiety. Yes, he has always known that being a cop is a part of her life, but the circumstances has changed for them, though Lisbon thinks they hasn't.

  22. First of all Diana Mack you're the goddess of the reviews and you're doing great job.
Great episode great actors I enjoyed every second of it.Well done.Bravo!!!!
I believe that Teresa and Patrick must stop hunting shadows in the dark and finally behave as a rsonable adults and talk about all their issues with honesty not feat.Allow me to say something.
People must not give up and run away from a relattionship like Teresa and Patrick did and do that's no a solution to our problems. Also don't be afraid to express your feelings only because you're afraid that might be rejected express it before it's to late like it is for Wylie and Vega.Years ago i fell in love
something happened and we decided to be friends.Unfortunately I gave up and run away from this frindly situation and I closed to myself. When finally I realized that it was better to be just friends I didn't know what to do and the time passed. We never talk again that person died in a car accident and since I keep wondering how it would be our lives if we had a friendly relationship.I'll never know and regret for what I did.I don't know if I managed to express my thoughts correctly but english is not my native language so I'm sorry for any kind of mstakes that i've made.
Last but not least I really hope Teresa and Patrick will have a colourful life after so many pain and darkness. They don't deserve to be alone without each other and their love.

  23. Lisbon has feared often that Jane will leave. This is a major trust issue which has now surfaced again, this time in a more damaging way. For Lisbon, I'd say her career is a constant, she will always have it, it will not let her down, it's who she is. Jane on the other hand, is so riddled with fear and past trauma, how could he be a reliable partner? Can he really ever get past the fear? How can he really love Lisbon when at a time when they need each other's support, he can present her with an ultimatum like this, knowing that he will cause her a great deal of pain. Even if they get together, I don't know how Lisbon will get over the issue of trust.

  24. Because she doesn't feel secured with him... because he will simply quit to avoid being hurt... I understand Lisbon ... And I can say She Loves Jane and if she was absolutly sure what life she will have with him she would quit FBI...You'll see when he will propose, she will quit.. I bet everything on that ;-)
