The Flash - The Nuclear Man - Review
Feb 12, 2015
Reviews SW The FlashThis weeks episode of The Flash proved that not every episode needs a villain to hold itself up. Barry and the others had their own challenges to face and they took them head on! This episode involved the culmination of weeks of build-up for the Firestorm character and it lived up to all the hype and so much more.
For the past few weeks we've had small pieces of information handed to us in regards to Firestorm (or Project F.I.R.E.S.T.O.R.M. if you prefer). We've also seen Robbie Amell skulking around as what appeared to be a super-powered homeless man. The twist? Martin Stein was in control of Ronnie Raymonds body. While Robbie Amell's performance in The Tomorrow People was very hit or miss, his performance here really stood out.
He played the duel personalities of the character superbly and brought forth some very dramatic scenes with both Caitlin and Barry. Caitlin herself had some choice moments as she struggled emotionally with what has happened. I wasn't expecting the episode to end on such a cliffhanger (especially with Caitlin bringing on the emotion moments before), but it was a nice change to have the cliffhanger before the pre-credit teaser.
Firestorm also gave us some amazing visual sights with his inferno form, especially during his battles with Barry. I was kind of expecting Barry to discover his helicopter-hands-flight-power when he thrown off, but part of me is glad that they aren't completely rushing all of Barry's powers.
Moving away from Firestorm, we got to see more into the lives of the other cast members, especially with Linda Park. I personally found the Barry/Linda dynamic fun and while I'm curious as to what Linda actually see's in Barry I'm liking that we're getting to see this other side of him. It's also to an extent giving us another look at Iris.
Grant and Candice have fun chemistry but I'm not the greatest fan of how they're treating their relationship. One day they're speaking, the next they aren't, the next they're BFFs again, the next Barry tries to move on. Now we have Iris getting second thoughts and cutting Barry at the knees. It's starting to feel like a teen high school drama to me. Iris deserves so much more then this, instead her actions (which seemed really out of character to me) make her seem like a really ugly person which goes against how she's acted in previous episodes. I'm glad that Barry called her out on it in the same episode rather then dragging it on too.
Thankfully Joe and Cisco had a more entertaining subplot with the re-investigation into Nora Allen's murder. It was funny to see Sherry making attempts at Joe while Cisco went about his work, expanding the case much further with an important revelation that is sure to get many theories running.
Something else that I feel is worth bringing up from this episode is the comedy. While the show has had it's fair deal of comedic moments, this episode was really on the ball. Grant Gustin nails the comedic awkwardness of Barry Allen.
Lets not forget the age old question that was touched on too, can superheroes do 'stuff' considering their powers? (Please tell me i'm not the only one that was surprised they went there).
Overall Feelings:
After so many teasers we finally got the story of Firestorm that was both emotional and and sight to behold. Barry and other cast members all had their own plots to explore that pushed this amazing show even further. Here's hoping next week holds up and continues to show us the fury of Firestorm!

The episode was spectacular.
ReplyDeleteThe firestorm track was very well done and robbie played the part surprising well.My heart broke when he kissed caitlin in the closing moments of the episode.Barry and linda have natural chemistry whereas i'm not feeling iris at all. They need to work on her storyline ASAP,same goes for her BF eddie.I'm not a comic book fan so i have no clue why he's here as a series regular when he has hardly 2-3 dialogues per episode. Can anyone tell me if he has any major storyline in the future or is he supposed to be here to fulfill the cliche clueless pretty BF quota.
I loved to see joe and cisco working together.I cracked up when cisco said to joe-I will not judge you.
The twist regarding barry's murder was nothing less than amazing & suprising for me.They are such amazing characters, especially joe.I love him even more with each passing week.
I also liked barry-caitlin scenes together, they are so comfortable with other now unlike iris.
I can't to see the conclusion of this firestrom arc next week.Time travel idea sounds awesome.
Lovely review and my first post in this review thread for this show-That's how good this episode was!
Welcome to the reviews~! :)
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Barry/Iris is that I feel their chemistry better suits the brother/sister dynamic. To me it's more fun-type-chemistry rather then romantic chemistry. I'm tempted to want them to keep Barry/Linda together along with Eddie/Iris.
In regards to Eddie (spoiler warning), I believe currently has no story planned (at least what has been revealed so far). The big thing with his character is his last name, Thawne. One of the people to take up the Reverse Flash identity in the comics was Eobard Thawne. Considering Reverse Flash's actions in episode 9 (he stopped to look at Eddie) it seems that Reverse Flash is his descendant.
:)
I agree with your POV regarding barry-iris,i really don't see any romantic chemistry here. Thanks for the eddie info.Me and my brother were getting really frustrated with his storyline.
ReplyDeleteI really liked seeing Firestorm fly. I was cracking up when Barry said don't flame on (that was reference to the human torch). Also finding out that Barry time travled to his moms death was a really nice touch
ReplyDeleteThis was an exceptional episode. Thanks for the review and I agree with everything. Robbie Amell surprised me. I was disappointed when they cast him as FIRESTORM. I was not much impressed in him as Ronnie in the flash back scenes too. But in this episode Ronnie with Martin Stein's conscience was superb. His scenes with Barry in STAR labs were excellent. The CGI for FIRESTORM are so good.
ReplyDeleteJoe and Cisco was a riot. Loved the mirror photo hologram thing. Very cool scientifically correct or not. Wells was great too this episode. I am still confused by this guy. He thinks about killing Ronnie and takes a gun and then goes on and use the tachion prototype to save him? Didn't he go great lengths to get this prototype in mid season finale?
Iris/Linda/Barry situation. It was a spectacular mess. Linda was cute and lots of fun. I don't know why they had to show Iris jealous and developing feelings for Barry while being in a committed relationship with from what we know a great guy. Couldn't they have just shelved it for some time, concentrate on her career, break her relationship with Eddie and then have her develop feelings? These kind of story lines always makes the girl look bad and I like Iris. It felt OOC. This is the same girl who gushed about Felicity going on a date with Barry. All this mess is due to writers having this need for epic romance which starts from childhood. If Barry had met Iris on the show like he met Linda and their relationship had progressed there would have been no problem. Now they have this huge history which we have not seen and thus find it difficult to connect with. I would have rather liked to see Iris with The Flash and them talking about how Iris blew him off after him attacking Eddie.
