Written/executive produced by Kapinos, Dead People centers on a down-on-his-luck, semi-alcoholic but roguishly charming cab driver. After a near-death experience, he suddenly has the ability to interact with ghosts, including his late ex-wife who he has never gotten over. Warner Bros. TV is producing with studio-based Bad Robot and Kapinos’ Aggressive Mediocrity. Bad Robot’s Abrams and Bryan Burk also exec produce.

For how much I enjoyed JJ's earlier stuff it has gotten to the point where I am now more skeptical than excited by his name being attached to a project.
I'd say wait and see how the casting goes, but the solid casts of his recent shows have not saved them.. Alcatraz, Almost Human, Believe, Revolution, and Undercovers were all mediocre even when at their best. I exclude Person of Interest since it's more Nolan's project to me.
It is a comedy? it could work as a comedy/drama type like Pushing Daises (i love that show), sounds really interesting tbh but being JJ Abrahams i think comedy is not in it.
ReplyDeleteWell its not like JJ is going to remain on the show, he only seems to be involved and getting the show off the grounds, and hes more like a label attached to a project. When was the last time he actually stayed with a show for more than one season?

ReplyDeletePremise sounds cool, but it's the tone of the show that'll set how good it actually is. Just like Ressurection on paper sounds like it should be good based on the premise but the slow pace hurts it greatly.

ReplyDeleteHe had limited control over all but Undercovers which he produced and directed the pilot of and wrote all episodes as I recall..

ReplyDeleteAnother "I-see-dead-people" show. Are they assuming that iZombie will flop? Doesn't make sense to have two shows where the person can either see dead people or read the minds of dead people unless this one isn't meant to be an investigative/murder show.

ReplyDeleteI think the casting would make or break this show. With the right cast it has potential though I think its premise sounds more procedural and less fitting for the CW.
ReplyDeleteGiven how most of Bad Robot's projects on network TV as of late have been put down prematurely, as well as how they've been focusing heavily on cable & digital productions as of late (Westworld, Roadies, 11/22/63), I'm surprised to see they're not completely giving up on broadcast.

The show doesn't sound that compelling but I trust J.J. Abrams so I'll give it a try. God I miss FRINGE and LOST (even if I hated the finale I still loved the show).

ReplyDeleteCool! Hope they finally pick up one his Pilots. I was so disappointed over the last few seasons when they passed on Shelter and Electropolis. This sounds charming. Can't wait to see who'll they'll cast in the lead!
ReplyDeleteHe's been trying to get something on this network for years. I do think it's going to be more like a regular drama with a dash of supernatural (Felicity, 6 Degrees, Believe), but I wouldn't mind something tamer, as long as it's executed better than Believe. I always wanted to see the next Chapter in Hugo's life and this could be kind of like that depending on what the ghosts "need" him to do. This will rely much on cast I think. Like if Terry O Quinn would be in the lead, it might save it/make it more appealing. On the other hand, I remember that Abrams was teaming up with Ron Howard again remaking a movie about a woman dying and before she goes to heaven, she has the choice to go back and make different decisions in her life...this kind of sounds like that with a dash of Believe and Hugo and Henry Higgens thrown in for good measure.
ReplyDeleteTrue but in an interview from last year, many of the people who work with him on a regular basis said they spoke with him/received information from him on a regular basis and he was doing his job, despite being involved in probably too many projects because he's not just a producer, he's an EXECUTIVE producer.

I would love Terry O'Quinn, Greg Grunberg, Joshua Jackson, Henry Ian Cusick, Jeff Fehay, Ken Leung, John Noble, or Michael Ealy in this role, but it probably will be a young unknown...
He makes a lot of executive decisions, even though I agree that his showrunners/head writers/and other creators tend to become the face and do more of the day to day work, but most of Bad Robot's works reference/allude each other often and are almost like little pieces of previous work taken in a new direction and tend to stand for something rather pro humanism (although I think that will change with Westworld). So it's not like Bad Robot's people don't try to be on the same page. I think most of their works are about examining what identity is.

ReplyDeleteWell it's kind of funny in a way. Hugo clearly saw Dead People referencing The Sixth Sense, and there is also an Alias episode title which references it too, "I See Dead People". (Sloan kept projecting Nadia)
ReplyDeleteThere's almost like this comedic aspect to it because it's so simple and so straight forward. LOL. It makes it sound like something so non personal or casual and yet I'm sure it will be the opposite...
I personally think Kripke and Abrams were arguing over mythos. Abrams people wanted the nanites not to be completely negative, but something that became 'misused' and misunderstood that could in the end be the thing that moves everyone [spiritually] forward (ala smoke monster/observers/super computers) and Kripke I think wanted to make them super bad along with his lets take two steps forward and then ten steps back too often idea. So it got stuck in the middle of season two and didn't move forward, it became anti-prohressive, despite how much better everything else they changed was. Plus I'm not sure if Kripke is very good at writing for woman...

I mean it could get boring real fast if there isn't anything unusual with the ghost mythos...about why ghosts need his help and would be way better, if in some cases, he could bring them back to life or they all don't just vanish in case of the week style...There has to be a good cast and something that sets it's ghosts apart from other series like this, including silly antics!
ReplyDeleteexactly cause if not it will turn out out to be a Ghost Whisperer 2.0. I think if they pick it up, it could have some comedy factor, something that says "hey this not the typical "i will help you to go the other side" type of show" but that has something else. Maybe he sees the ghosts and they interfere on his daily life and he does everything to avoid them?. Sounds cliche but who knows, they could make it work.
