'Tempus Fugit' Preview
I love anything to do with travelling back in time, so I loved every single minute of being in the past. I, like a lot of people, worried about the whole slavery aspect of it but rest assured, it isn't something that messes with this episode. We have a couple of people make remarks, and one argues with Ichabod with his ignorance against Abbie. I honestly wanted to slap him. It is a really tricky subject but the writers avoid it when they can. When something does happen, you can see on Abbie's face she's not impressed and she's holding back from smacking them in the face. I, for one, would have loved that.
The other aspects of being in time were simply wonderful. We have Abbie eventually talk some sense (nonsense?) into Ichabod about the future and he takes her to see Benjamin Franklin who is simply delightful. He's so open-minded and curious about the future and you can see the glee on Abbie's face. We also have Katrina who finds out about Abbie and is hot on their heels and with death on her mind. She enlists the help of Abraham (but his face is never shown so I don't think it's the same actor, he never speaks either) and together, they cause some death and destruction. There are some great moments when Katrina uses her powers. They really have peaked, just where has this powerful Katrina been hiding? Wish we could have seen it long before this.
There is also so fun to be had with Past Ichabod too, especially when he accesses Abbie's phone to find out if she was telling the truth as there are "moving pictures" and selfies on her phone of them from the future. It's a really funny scene that highlights that love we have for Ichabod versus the twenty-first century. So good.
As enjoyable as being in the past was, the end result just proves one thing - the writers really messed up this season and they desperately tried to fix it in this episode. Arguably, the 'problems' are fixed. We can go into season three with a completely clean slate and expect the same show we fell in love with in season one. I am happy we can start anew. There's a million ways we can go in season three. But consider my faith in the writers somewhat diminished. I'll only believe season three will be better when we see a season three and this finale doesn't exactly show they can do that. The seeds have been planted, let's hope they can see it through.
The last five to ten minutes, when returning from the past to the moment Katrina cast the spell in the first place at the end of the last episode, was a mixed bag really. I hate that the whole thing was easily fixed, nothing has changed and it made the entire time travel aspect completely redundent. I would have preferred it if reversing the spell was harder and we don't get an ending that felt rushed and last minute.
Overall, it was a great episode with an anticlimactic resolution. I would have loved to have seen some changes in the present day from going to the past, but the story so conveniently works it so there will be nothing to worry about time-wise since Abbie did change so much in the past. There was so much lost potential there. People in the comments of my review of the last episode had some fantastic theories that were way, way better than what happened here. Never mind.
'Tempus Fugit' Teasers
- There is no cliffhanger. We are not left hanging desperate to see the next episode. Having said that, it would still be nice to get a next episode!
- More death, including someone being beheaded old-school Sleepy Hollow style.
- We literally do have a totally clean slate.
- The writers could have gone a million different ways with the storyline, but instead chose the easiest, simplest route they could have.
- Abbie is essentially the main force in this episode.
- We take a look inside Ichabod's and Katrina's lovely home.
- Benjamin Franklin is amazing.
- I said "oh shit" a good few times, I'm pretty sure you will too.

Have any questions about the episode? Let me know in the comments and be sure to watch the season (series?) finale of Sleepy Hollow when it aires on February 23rd on FOX at 9PM!
I know you can't say but I can guess by the easy way Katrina is going to die. And someone else will put Ichabod in the sleep.
ReplyDeleteHa, you did a masterful job of tip-toeing around giveaways. I had been very worried about the truly nasty path the whole ugly slavery issue could have taken so I am glad to hear it was handled without ickiness( not to be confused with Ichabod-ness). I cannot wait to see Ichabod view the evidence from the future on the cellphone. I shall be watching Monday both with excitement for the episode and trepidation for the fate of a delightful gem of a show. I cannot imagine life without Abbie and Ichabod's adventures to enjoy. Thanks for the preview.
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad the whole slavery thing doesn't wind up being a big issue in the episode-when I'd read the synopsis that definitely gave me pause and cringe a little, so I'm relieved to hear that that won't wind up as bad as people feared it would. I too wouldn't mind seeing Abbie smack a few people around for their bigoted remarks, though! She's not exactly someone you want to piss off, after all.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of Abbie wandering around in Ichabod's world for a little while, and the whole thing of him reacting to her modern technology-well, that's always fun and entertaining, so I look forward to seeing that :D.
VERY glad we won't end on a cliffhanger like we did last season, especially considering the dramatic-sounding summary of this season finale. And while I know you aren't revealing everything about the finale, you don't make a big thing about the death aspect, so I'm feeling a little better about that aspect of things. But I am sorry that the ending leaves you a little mixed in your feelings, and longing for more-I totally understand the writers wanting to just reset things, but yeah, there's ways to do it that don't seem so pat and easy, too, that still leave some room for intriguing possible options. Guess I'll see for myself come Monday how I feel about that.
If Katrina does die in the finale, I'll be bummed, because it'd be a sad end to a character that could've had, and should've had, much better development much sooner, but I'll deal with it. And with this show's supernatural aspect, death doesn't always stick, so...who knows what could happen in the future should the show get another season? I figure Ichabod and Abbie will survive-main characters and all, but I was particularly worried about losing Jenny or Irving, so as long as I know they'll survive the finale, too, then I'm good with that :). I'd like to think the writers aren't that intent on angering fans, after all :p!
Even if the ending isn't quite what you hoped it'd be, if it does give us a good place to start from next season, and opens the door to us GETTING another season, then that's fine by me. Nice overview, as always-looking forward to Monday night!
So, I can skip this season and continue with the 3rd (if there is one), if it's any good?
ReplyDeleteBecause I don't want to endure everything that Season 2 was.
It was fun reading your tweets while you were watching. Sorry the ending was kind of blah but the sooner we get out of this season the better. I think I'll remember Sleepy Hollow as a one season event.
ReplyDeleteHa! I just wrote a whole rant about the phone on another site thinking the writers wouldn't employ it as a tool to convince Ichabod. I'd expect them to ignore it completely or another cop out like having it dead or broken. My faith is renewed :) Now to continue reading your preview...
ReplyDeleteI understand your pain. I actually didn't think it was all as bad as some made it out to be. I didn't like the focus taken away from Abbie and Ichabod together nor did I like the family drama stuff, but it was tolerable for all the little gems buried in even the bad episodes. I think the most hated episode is Deliverance, and even that features a poignant Ichabbie voting moment in the beginning.
ReplyDeleteThat stated, I hope you'll give the finale a chance and watch it live! I don't really understand how the ratings system works--it all sounds a bit antiquated, if you ask me--but I'd like to imagine every view counts!
So wait, by the end of all this does Ichabod have his memories of the past 2 seasons? Everything he and Abbie have been through and the importance of their bond to each other? Cause if he doesn't that'll really suck big time tbh :(
ReplyDeleteso Katrina's a fully evil despicable person now?
ReplyDeleteI hope you'll not be offended, but I'm a little OCD and noticed the following in your writing:
ReplyDelete* explicitally => explicitly
* distinguished => perhaps you meant extinguished
* could have went => could have gone
Sorry to do that, but if you're writing for a living (even if it's partially), then I think the writing should be correct. Once again, I hope you're not offended and thanks for the preview!
I don't think this happens, but what would be absolutely fantastic is if Abbie has a fifty dollar bill and shows it to Franklin.
ReplyDeleteNobody else puts Ichabod in his sleep. Honestly the way they've done it is that it ends up the whole going-in-the-past never happened and it's literally just continuing the end of episode 17 without the time door.
ReplyDeleteNo problem, and thanks for reading! Oh, the cellphone in the past is such a treat and he has to work it by himself too so he's so confused but fascinated by it. The video he watches of him and Abbie is hilarious too. Can't wait for you to see it!
ReplyDeleteHaha definitely do not want to cross the Abbie. Having said that, she does sort of get her own back on a guard so watch that with a glass of wine to celebrate! It was hard to not reveal too much and I knew I would if I sounded a certain way so I focused on the more positive, definitely. I am intrigued to see how things go if a season 3 does come to fruition.
ReplyDeleteExactly. I can't confirm nor deny if Katrina dies in the finale but even if she does, we've seen before that the dead don't always stay away. Same goes for Henry/Jeremy, though as far as Henry is concerned I'm sure the writers want to move past that drama aspect of the show. But yeah, Katia Winter said in an interview that her involvement with season 3 would depend on what direction the writers want to take her and you could look at Katrina in this episode in that way - just what will the writers do next for her, if anything?
I wouldn't say you could skip the entire season as 2x01 would have to follow on from 1x13 and there'd be that huge gap. It's possible though if you don't mind the cliffhanger of season 1 and then going straight into season 3.
ReplyDeleteYeah I didn't think season 2 was catastrophic as there were some genuinely great episodes mixed in. It was just a poorly planned season I think and if they had of been given more time or something, it could have been executed better. But I guess we can't change anything about it now. What's done is done.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would also recommend watching the finale live just to sort of give the show a good send-off if it is not picked up again. The system is definitely antiquated though! Hopefully FOX takes all numbers, not just live, into consideration.
So that means they talk Katrina into doing it. But we know it is their relationship that implodes beyond repair. So Abbie must kill her after she does it because we know someone else dies and doesn't come back. We know then headless and Ichabod die but both come back in the future. Not sure if I will like this one will watch it because I haven't missed one yet. But if they end it the way I think they do and have taken the easy way out. Then I will probably not watch season 3. Because of how they did it.
ReplyDeleteThanks, and glad you enjoyed them, wish I could have done more but I wanted to keep my eyes on the screen for as long as possible, especially in the last 10 minutes. Sleepy Hollow really did have a stellar first season and it would have been nice for nothing to have dampened the show but it seems season 2 has done that. Maybe if you include 2x01 in just your 1 season thing as it follows on from the cliffhanger, then it should be fine to just always remember the show as that.
ReplyDeleteGlad your faith is renewed in the phone bit. It's actually a really great scene and I was worried it was just going to not work or something, but it seems it still does :D
ReplyDeleteBy take the easy way out, I mean it's resolved far too easily and the whole thing is reversed too easily. I would have preferred a bit more of a fight, bit more of some action in the scene it happens, rather than just "reverse the spell that will take a minute and make the entire time travel aspect of this episode and last episode a total waste". I don't mind that nothing really changed though I would have preferred some consequences (not drastic, just some), it's just how it's resolved is what bugs me. But honestly, the entire part in the past was so enjoyable though, it was a really great ride from start to finish until the thing is reversed and we have the ending.
Pretty sure Sleepy Hollow is following The Voice on Monday since The Voice premieres so maybe it will help raise its ratings somewhat for the finale. Fingers crossed!
There's another witch who helps Abbie get home while Katrina and the Horseman fight Ichabod, and the spell sends Katrina AND Abbie back to the point of the episode before when the spell was cast.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you're still going to be watching the finale. Got to support our Katrina while we can :)
Everything is back to normal by the end of the episode. Just think the entire time travel sequence had no point whatsoever other than just for some good entertainment purposes, because it was a great part. We literally just go back to the end of episode 17 when the spell was cast but this time, it's not. So it follows on from there. Abbie and Ichabod will still have their memories and their bond :)
ReplyDeleteFunny you should mention fifty dollar bills... :P
ReplyDeleteShe has definitely aligned herself against Abbie and Ichabod and is out to kill them in this episode. There's no going back for her.
ReplyDeleteFortunately I don't think there will be any plot holes moving forward, so that's good.
ReplyDeleteThat's fine, I'm not offended. I do write books as a hobby and have self-published in the past (and will continue to do so) but when it comes to reviews on here, I'm just a volunteer and I write on the Blogger software and it's not the most ideal workspace but it does the job. I take a more informal approach to writing on this site so I'm not so disciplined with correct word use as 'could have went' is what people usually say where I live so I end up using it without realising. I know it's grammatically incorrect though but I don't think about it when I write it, I am just being informal. I was supposed to say 'diminished' so I don't know why I wrote distinguished, that's strange I must have just thought the right word but wrote a similar-looking one down instead. That happens sometimes. Same with explicitly, just one of those moments. I'll fix them though so thanks for pointing them out.
ReplyDeleteAnd you're welcome, thanks for reading :)
No, you don't :). I like that about her. But that's great to hear that she does get back a little-I look forward to that moment :D. I like tough, kickass Abbie, even if she shows it in small ways.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you focusing on the positive. For one, you've gotta try and entice people to watch, obviously :p, and for another, it's nice to know there's stuff to look forward to with this show. I know it's caused a lot of debate this season, and for good reason in some respects, I certainly will not argue that. But even with all the ups and downs, I still like this show, and still like the characters, and still want to see them working to fix whatever issues they did have. So it's always good to read some positive press about the show, and to know there's stuff worth enjoying in an episode. Course, I'm an optimistic sort in general, so I do tend to seek that out in the things I'm a fan of :).
Precisely. And Henry's a good example of that, too. In some ways, his death last week did feel very final, in other ways, it didn't. I mean, this entire series started with Ichabod waking from a 250 year slumber, for crying out loud, so considering that, anything's possible on this show :p (and on the note of Henry, when they mentioned his other name, Jeremy, last week, I actually went, "...oh, right, that IS also his name!" I've gotten so used to calling him Henry, haha!).
If she doesn't stay on, then hopefully this can give her a good enough exit, and if she does, then hopefully they can figure out a better way to go with her character and make it all work out much more smoothly. We'll see, I suppose.
YES! If this show ended on a cliffhanger and wasn't renewed, I'd kick somebody, LOL. And the wait from January to September last year after the first season finale cliffhanger was agonizing, so I'm rather glad we won't have to go through that here, too. But yeah. That's always the best way to go when a show's hanging in the balance like that.
You're welcome, as always, and thanks! I'll be sure to share them. I don't work Monday night, so no need to delay my viewing of the episode :D.
I approve of this idea.
ReplyDelete**sigh** I have mixed feelings about this TOTAL reset. I would've much rather they used this opportunity to bring Corbin and/or Andy back or cultivated Jenny into a witch since the bell rang but to just reset it to right before the Traveling spell seems like such a waste and really rather anticlimactic to everything that they built over the last two episodes. BUT, if it means putting all the bickering behind us, then I guess I'll take it. So I guess this means that Katrina is the death (although your title has it as plural - does Abraham die too or is Jeremy counted as another death since Katrina is pregnant with him in the past - nevermind - I know you cant tell me :-P)??
ReplyDeleteHope we get a S3 - as much as I don't trust these writers, bringing in some fresh blood (or bring back some S1 blood), could go a long way towards revitalizing a show that has an awesome premise and a lot of material to work with....
I eagerly await your review after the finale airs and thanks for taking over the preview/reviews this season!
I'm still hoping that prick from the black rose is the cause of her sudden evilness, and she'll be saved. Otherwise, I doubt I'll be back for S3, if there is one.
ReplyDeleteShe may become good but her and Ichabod are over never to be together again if I reading thing right also think Abbie will kill her to save Ichabod,
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure Katrina is going to die in season 2 finale.
ReplyDeleteSo much missed opportunity isn't there. Haha can't confirm any of the deaths, maybe it's nobody in the main cast, maybe a few of them happen in the 'past' that gets reset. Just 1 more day to find out!
ReplyDeleteIf the writers can inject some fresh blood and material into the show and execute it well, then Season 3 should be very good. I look forward to sharing my full thoughts in the review, and thanks so much for your kind words and welcoming me with open arms in this Sleepy Hollow community. It's been a pleasure :)
They definitely didn't do Katrina justice this season, which is such a shame. That's why I tend to stay away from sites like IMDb when it comes to fandom for various shows as I know I won't like what I'll read and I never want to be part of any hate towards a show I love. Better to be in the dark about the hate rather than let it dampen your enjoyment of the show. But sometimes, especially since I review the show now, it's unavoidable. I understand starting to resent certain characters because of fandoms. That usually happens when rabid fans of a certain character gang up on another character - they'll bully those who ARE fans of the character they hate, even though opinions should be respected. It's fine to challenge and discuss, but being called names and being attacked is uncalled for and totally unacceptable. So sorry you've had to deal with this among the Sleepy Hollow community.
ReplyDeleteThe fans that started the canelsepplyhollow are harmless and no I'm not one of them. Katia said nothing wrong in her interview the writer did do a very poor job in writing her and some of it is about shipping. A lot of people have said the writing was terrible and it is about shipping , but of course it worse when Katia say it. It is nothing compare to what some rabid Abbie fans have said about Katia character and how she got the job. You can hate a character but when fans start attacking the actress like the way some fan have with Katia the have crossed the line and makes them look petty and meanspirited. This is a story not real life and people need to remember that and the actor and actress have to do want the writer and derictor want them to say and how to act it out. None of these actors or actress have the power to get it their way.
ReplyDeleteIt sucks if that is it, but is it really. If we go back to that exactly moment before the spell was changed how do we know what is different or not. Do we see Jenny/Frank or any other characters in that moment.
ReplyDeleteI just don't think they writers are that poor in the skill to go right back to that point in time without putting in some twist. Maybe the want us to think everything is the same and then when/if S3 begins things are different. I remember something like this happening on the show Eureka when they return from the past everything look the same but was completely different.
I really can't say that I'm all too mad with them going easy as long as it done. Abbie could click her heels three times at the end and I would be happy as long as we get a S3. I'm just ready with this season to be done with and to see what S3 brings.
ReplyDeleteI do hope that there are some consequences for going back to the past big or small I don't care but I want something.
Haha I love that, click her heels three times, I had fun with that comment :P Yeah I am relieved this season has ended for me now and I'm hoping season 3 will be much improved :D Yeah I want something to just so we know there was a point to the entire sequence of events.
ReplyDeleteDo you want her to?
ReplyDeleteI do agree that the writing was the main problem with this season and I do agree with a lot of your points there. I hope we get new blood in the writer's room to try and restore the show to its former glory, or even do better, but S3 just has to be better than S2 or that's it. I never saw who or how the cancelsleepyhollow thing started, but I don't think Katia was ever out of line with her interview, she made some really valid points.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the cancelsleepyhollow stuff when it first started but yeah, things like that are pretty harmless. I agree that Katia was right in her interview as I'm sure everybody agrees her character wasn't handled well by the writers and she did the best she could with it. Totally admire and respect Katia for it. I hate that things like that have made fans resort to vocal abuse online against the actresses when it's totally uncalled for. It needed to be clear that the actress does not writer for her character or have much control over what she does, so I'm glad people have stepped in and defended her when they did so that people would back off. I hope Katia will still have a very successful career after Sleepy Hollow and play roles that won't attract criticism from people who just didn't like her on this show. She's a great actress, she just needs the right material.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, maybe when they go outside there'll be things that have changed, but the way the episode ends makes you believe everything has stayed the same. By going back to the moment the time door was created, that means Abbie and Katrina never went inside it and so, nothing was done to make the future change. But maybe I'm wrong? Once you watch the episode, it might become clearer to you too. But I would have totally loved everything to look the same at first glance but things have changed.
ReplyDeleteSurprised to hear that nothing changes in the present -- was thinking it would be fun if Clancy Brown had never been beheaded and is still mentor to Abbie and Jenny. Now that I think about it -- it is strange that he never got Jenny out of the mental institution ,considering she had been helping him all along before Abbie found out what was going on. Also strange about Abraham's small presence in the episode and even stranger they possibly did not even use the same actor - cost cutting ? unavailability? Interesting that the headless horseman is so central to the original Legend of Sleepy Hollow but has been sidelined in our ( still wondrous) Sleepy Hollow. I am really looking forward to seeing the finale but now a bit worried they undercut the potential of the journey to the past. Thanks for the heads up so I won't be disappointed . Not that I will not enjoy every second -- I truly love this show. Always enjoy your reviews.
ReplyDeleteThat would have been fun! Those are a lot of strange things you list there, really makes you question those decisions! I'm guessing they couldn't get the actor back so they had an unknown actor play him with this mask covering his face and never speaking, it was pretty bizarre actually. But you couldn't really tell it's someone else I suppose. I think you will still enjoy the time spent in the past as it is a delight. The more time that has passed since watching the episode, the less disappointed by that aspect I become. I still love the show too and glad you do too! Thanks for reading and the kind words, always appreciated :)
ReplyDeleteI know this is called Spoiler TV but this is not good. How could you give the entire plot away?
ReplyDeleteOh no! So sorry that got ruined for you 😔 now you know why the ending ruined the episode for me. I hope you still watch just to give Katrina's last stand some strength. It will be our final farewell after all 😔
ReplyDeleteI watched it , but will not ome back if they get a season 3' Katrina can only come back as a ghost because their is no body not something I want. Also did like that Ichabod standing there all alone and the Abbie has Jenny and ivring she lodged no one but Ivhanod lost both his son nd wife. Totally unfair
ReplyDelete
