    I actually thought the triangle has been in the works even from before the rape. Conde was sort of fancying Mary from the start, reaching to the point of having genuine feelings which he confessed in a letter he wrote that was sent to her before the attack in the castle.

    James is right, they were well into the triangle before Mary was assaulted. Conde wrote that letter before the attack on the castle happened.
